The Nippon Kan Theatre: When Cultural Facilities Have A Second Chance, Stefanie M. Fatooh
Nippon Kan Theatre
The Nippon Kan (Japanese Hall) Theatre was built in 1909, on the corner of Washington Street and Seventh Avenue, in Seattle’s Nihonmachi or Japantown. As a community owned space, the Nippon Kan became the social and arts center for the Japanese community and a significant location within the neighborhood that is now known as the Chinatown International District. Although it was closed during the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, it was later rediscovered and renovated, reopening in 1981. Although the times were different, the Nippon Kan claimed a similar place in the heart of the community once …

Ma State Universities Title Ix Sexual Harassment Policy, Massacusetts State Universities
Equal Opportunity Plan
Previously known as the “Sexual Violence Policy,” the Title IX Sexual Harassment Policy has been amended, and renamed, to be consistent with the Title IX Regulations that became effective August 14, 2020. Additionally, this policy is intended to comply with the reauthorized Violence Against Women Reauthorized Act of 2018 (“VAWA”), including the Campus SaVE Act, and the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (“Clery Act”). The Title IX Sexual Harassment Policy replaces and supersedes the “Sexual Violence Policy” previously contained on pages 13-45 of the Equal Opportunity, Diversity and Affirmative Action Plan (“EO Plan").

Faultlines Of Federation: Australia's Intergovernmental Cooperation And Human Rights During The Pandemic, Guzyal Hill, John Garrick, Nat Barton
Florida State University Journal of Transnational Law & Policy
The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged previously understood boundaries between jurisdictions and the balance of power between national, state and territory governments in Australia. The crisis served as a catalyst for long called for-yet unexpected-reform of the peak intergovernmental body, the Council of Australian Governments ('COAG') which was replaced by the National Cabinet to ensure coordinated intergovernmental responses. This article examines whether the new National Cabinet has emerged as an effective institution of intergovernmental cooperation in Australia's federalist structure. Is it capable of protecting human rights? Three main areas of rights protection were examined including health, work and rights of residents …
Becoming Global Lawyers? A Comparative Study Of Civic Professionalism, John Bliss
Becoming Global Lawyers? A Comparative Study Of Civic Professionalism, John Bliss
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Through their professional education and training, new lawyers are generally encouraged to adopt a civic vision of professional identity. This article explores convergences and diverges in how new lawyers entering an increasingly globalized legal profession conceive of their civic roles in different national contexts. In particular, I examine corporate lawyers-in-training in the U.S. and China, drawing on interviews and a cross-cultural identity mapping method to compare their accounts of the lived experiences of civic professionalism. I find that professional identity formation in the U.S. sample is largely marked by role distancing and a sense of constrained public-interest expression. In contrast, …

Labor Organization In Ride-Sharing: Unionization Or Cartelization?, Mark Anderson

The sharing economy brings together the constituent parts of a business enterprise into a structure that, on its surface, resembles a business firm, but in crucial ways is nothing like the traditional firm. This includes the ownership of the primary capital assets used in the business, as well as one of the most fundamental features of a firm-the relationship with its labor force. Sharing economy workers are formally contractors, running small businesses as sole entrepreneurs, with the effect that they are excluded from many of the protections made available to workers across the economy. The result is a seeming disparity …

Juveniles In Solitary Confinement, Abbey Logan
Juveniles In Solitary Confinement, Abbey Logan
Undergraduate Review
The topic of solitary confinement has been controversial in the United States for decades. Policies regarding juveniles in solitary confinement have been especially contentious in recent years. In this essay, I define solitary confinement and provide a brief overview of its history, discuss the current state of affairs and legal issues, evaluate a case in which solitary confinement played a key role, discuss the federal policy which ended solitary confinement for juveniles, and analyze the quality and effectiveness of the case and policy. I then suggest how to move forward from this detrimental practice.

Frivolous Defenses, Thomas D. Russell
Frivolous Defenses, Thomas D. Russell
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
This article is about civil procedure, torts, insurance, litigation, and professional ethics. This is an empirical piece with data drawn from a sample of 356 answers to 298 complaints in car crash lawsuits to identify various ways that, I argue, insurance defense lawyers evade the rules of civil procedure and, frankly, act unprofessionally.
The empirical center of this piece examines 356 answers in car crash personal injury cases in Colorado’s district courts. First, I situate these cases within dispute pyramid elements including the total number of miles-traveled within Colorado and also with respect to the volume of civil litigation.

Promoting Patent Practitioner Diversity: Expanding Non-Jd Pathways And Removing Barriers, Christopher M. Turoski
Promoting Patent Practitioner Diversity: Expanding Non-Jd Pathways And Removing Barriers, Christopher M. Turoski
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
The patent field suffers from a reciprocal problem: the cost of becoming a Registered Patent Attorney is high, and the diversity of the patent bar is low. The high cost of law school tuition (over $50,000 per year at some schools) prices out individuals from less privileged backgrounds, thereby decreasing the number of diverse candidates who could become Registered Patent Attorneys. The relatively low number of students with science, technology, or engineering (STE) degrees also restricts the number of diverse candidates who could become Registered Patent Attorneys. These factors contribute to a lack of diversity in the patent bar, reflecting …
