Effects Of A Professional Development Training Package On Nature-Based Teaching Strategies For Early Childhood Educators Of Children With Developmental Disabilities, Sylvia Collazo Jan 2021

Effects Of A Professional Development Training Package On Nature-Based Teaching Strategies For Early Childhood Educators Of Children With Developmental Disabilities, Sylvia Collazo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Research suggests spending time outdoors and with natural materials can benefit all young children across different areas of development. However, children with developmental disabilities often have fewer opportunities to engage with nature as a result of the limited understanding and negative views about nature expressed by their caregivers and educators. This study examined the effects of a professional development training package on the knowledge, perception, and application of nature-based teaching strategies of early childhood educators who teach young children with developmental disabilities. It also explored how teachers’ implementation of nature-based activities support children’s developmental outcomes. Results showed the professional development …

Effects Of Serotonin Modulation On Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase Deficient Drosophila Melanogaster, Ali Hamadeh Jan 2021

Effects Of Serotonin Modulation On Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase Deficient Drosophila Melanogaster, Ali Hamadeh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Methionine sulfoxide reductase (MSR) is an important antioxidant to help mitigate oxidative stress that contributes to age-associated neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease. In MSR deficient Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies), larvae show a developmental delay like that seen when wild-type larvae are reared on nutrient deficit culture medium. These investigators further showed that serotonin levels were depressed in these nutrient deficient larvae. The overarching aim of this study was to better understand the role of serotonin in MSR regulated physiology. Supplementing food with serotonin partially rescued the slower mouth hook movements (MHM) observed in the MSR-deficient flies. …

Evidence For The Independent Evolution Of Visual Perception During Seafinding By Hatchling Leatherback Sea Turtles (Dermochelys Coriacea), Samantha E. Trail Jan 2021

Evidence For The Independent Evolution Of Visual Perception During Seafinding By Hatchling Leatherback Sea Turtles (Dermochelys Coriacea), Samantha E. Trail

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Hatchling marine turtles exhibit a positive phototaxis by crawling toward the lowest and brightest horizon when they emerge from nests on the beach at night, which should lead them to the ocean (“seafinding”). Previous research with cheloniid (loggerhead and green turtle) hatchlings demonstrated that the perceptual spectral sensitivities are well below the light available on the beach regardless of lunar phase. The goal of this research was to determine the perceptual spectral sensitivities of leatherback hatchlings, the most distantly related of all extant sea turtle species. This study revealed that, like cheloniids, leatherbacks are most sensitive to shorter wavelengths (< 500 nm). However, leatherbacks were 10 – 100x less sensitive than cheloniids at all tested wavelengths. This difference in sensitivity corresponds with increased crawl duration and circling behavior under new moon conditions when light levels are lowest and the difference in radiance between the landward and seaward direction is small.

In this context, planning for the future entails conducting multi-hazard analysis of risks posed by current and future storm …

G-Csf Gene Therapy For Brain Diseases And/Or Sickle Cell Anemia, Stefan Basilio Jan 2021

G-Csf Gene Therapy For Brain Diseases And/Or Sickle Cell Anemia, Stefan Basilio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Ischemic stroke is defined as a blockage or reduced flow of blood to select areas of brain tissue due to either plaque formation or buildup of blood clots in the small blood vessels. A characteristic of sickle cell anemic patients is the potential for them to experience a similar type of blockage due to the sticky nature of the sickled red blood cells as well as defective oxygen delivery to the brain. Because of this similarity, sickle cell anemia may represent a good animal research model for therapeutic intervention based on stroke models. In recent studies, Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor (GCSF), …

Gcsf Gene Therapy For Parkinson’S Disease, Zachary Lee Jan 2021

Gcsf Gene Therapy For Parkinson’S Disease, Zachary Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The kynurenine pathway plays a critical role in regulating immunological homeostasis in the brain. Evidence supporting the hypothesis that kynurenine pathway dysfunction may exacerbate progression of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s is growing. First, we investigate the effects of Interferon-γ, Lipopolysaccharide, and Interleukin-4 on several key kynurenine pathway metabolites using high performance liquid chromatography. We found that Interferon-γ had significant effects on the extracellular concentration of kynurenine metabolites in astrocytes, microglia, and macrophage. GCSF gene therapy is previously demonstrated to exert neuroprotective effects on models of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. Seven days after receiving GCSF gene therapy, A53T Parkinson’s mice were …

Identification Of Anti-Adhesion Small Molecules, Which Inhibit Sequestration Of Plasmodium-Falciparum Infected Erythrocytes, Using A Two-Step Approach, Pimnitah S. Visitdesotrakul

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

A hallmark trait of P. falciparum malaria is sequestration, in which parasite infected erythrocytes (IEs) adhere to the vasculature, causing organ failure and death. Current antimalarials only kill the parasites, necessitating development of anti-adhesion drugs. Using our two-step approach, we can efficiently screen for anti-adhesion small molecules. Screenings of 75libraries using Bio-Plex 200 identified the most active TPI libraries, which were deconvoluted to single compounds. Screenings library TPI 1319 yielded 3 inhibiting non-optimized compounds, each of which inhibits binding between two receptors, CSA and ICAM1, and their binding PfEMP1 domains. Two compounds deconvoluted from TPI 2103 prevent binding between PfEMP1 …

Impact Of Sargassum Accumulations On Loggerhead Hatchling Recruitment To Nearshore Water On A Raked Urban Nesting Beach In Florida., Joshua P. Schiariti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Hatchling loggerhead turtles emerge from subsurface nests on the beach at night, crawl down the beach and enter the sea. Recently, increases in a floating algae (Sargassum) has been reported in the mid-Atlantic and the Caribbean, resulting in large algal wrack on Florida beaches. The purpose of my study was to determine if these accumulations acted as a barrier, preventing hatchlings from completing their crawl to the sea. To address this issue I recorded seasonal changes in Sargassum density and directly observed when, and under what circumstances, hatchlings could cross the wrack. There was a significant overlap between when Sargassum …

The Question Of A Federal Supreme Court In Germany 1806-1815, David Seleski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The effectiveness and the sustainability of the Holy Roman Empire remained a subject of debate over the past two centuries. While nationalist historians derided the lack of centralized institutions, revisionist historians after the Second World War largely stressed the positive aspects of the Empire. The Reichskammergericht and the Reichshofrat were two of the institutions that experienced this positive reassessment. While most historians focused on the effectiveness of the Reich courts during the existence of the Empire, few have examined the perception of the courts immediately after the demise of the Empire in 1806. This thesis analyzes the perception of the …

Mitochondrial Regulation Of Diabetic Kidney Disease, Daniel L Galvan, Koki Mise, Farhad R Danesh

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The role and nature of mitochondrial dysfunction in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has been extensively studied. Yet, the molecular drivers of mitochondrial remodeling in DKD are poorly understood. Diabetic kidney cells exhibit a cascade of mitochondrial dysfunction ranging from changes in mitochondrial morphology to significant alterations in mitochondrial biogenesis, biosynthetic, bioenergetics and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). How these changes individually or in aggregate contribute to progression of DKD remain to be fully elucidated. Nevertheless, because of the remarkable progress in our basic understanding of the role of mitochondrial biology and its dysfunction in DKD, there is great excitement …

Difficulty Of Care: Aligning Tax And Health Care Policy For Family Caregiving, Christine Speidel

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

In the United States millions of people live with disabilities, many of whom require assistance with activities of daily life to remain in their homes and communities. However, financial support for this assistance is limited. Many caregivers forgo working outside the home in order to provide care to a family member. And while state and federal programs provide some compensation for caregiving, caregivers frequently face problems including poverty, lack of health insurance, lack of Social Security and Medicare credits, and lack of retirement savings. Our nation’s paltry support for caregiving threatens the practical ability of people with disabilities to choose …

Sham Subpoenas And Prosecutorial Ethics, Ira Robbins

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Prosecutors are given broad freedom to conduct their investigations through-out the grand jury process; their power is not without legal and ethical limits, however. For example, courts have discretion to quash subpoenas that have been issued without a proper purpose. Unlike law enforcement officials who may use deceptive tactics throughout an investigation, prosecutors are subject to professional rules of responsibility. All lawyers are subject to some variation of Rule 4.2 of the Model Rules of Professional Responsibility—the No-Contact Rule—which prohibits a lawyer from communicating with a represented individual. Prosecutors, however, have escaped the Rule’s reach by communicating with represented individuals …

Symposium: Expanding Compassion Beyond The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jenny Roberts

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Compassionate relief matters. It matters so that courts may account for tragically unforeseeable events, as when an illness or disability renders proper care impossible while a defendant remains incarcerated, or when family tragedy leaves an inmate the sole caretaker for an incapacitated partner or minor children. It matters too, as present circumstances make clear, when public-health calamities threaten inmates with literal death sentences. It matters even when no crisis looms, but simply when continued incarceration would be "greater than necessary" to achieve the ends of justice.

The Past, Present, And Future Of Investment Treaty Conflict Management And Dispute Systems Design, Susan Franck

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

ABSTRACT: International investment dispute resolution is in an era of unprecedented flux. At first blush, it might appear that major transforma- tions in international law are pulling in opposite directions. On the one hand, non-adjudicative dispute resolution and "alternative" dispute resolu- tion mechanisms like mediation are gaining traction, and with the creation of a Convention on the Enforcement of Mediated Settlement, it might ap- pear to reign supreme. On the other hand, traditional rule of law mecha- nisms, namely international courts, seem to be gaining momentum with the strong advocacy of the European Union for the creation of an …
