Associating Psychological Factors With Workplace Satisfaction And Position Duration In A Sample Of International School Teachers, Ross C. Hollett, Mark Mcmahon, Ronald Monson
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
© Copyright © 2021 Hollett, McMahon and Monson. To be an effective teacher, a combination of specific professional skills and psychological attributes are required. With increasingly fluid employment conditions, particularly in the international context, recruiters and schools are under considerable pressure to quickly differentiate candidates and make successful placements, which involves more than just determining if a candidate holds an appropriate qualification. Therefore, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to measure theoretically and empirically valuable psychological attributes in an international sample of schoolteachers to determine the most valuable correlates of satisfaction and position duration. An international sample (N = …
Detection And Recognition Of Moving Video Objects: Kalman Filtering With Deep Learning, Hind Rustum Mohammed, Zahir M. Hussain
Detection And Recognition Of Moving Video Objects: Kalman Filtering With Deep Learning, Hind Rustum Mohammed, Zahir M. Hussain
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
© 2021. All rights reserved. Research in object recognition has lately found that Deep Convolutional Neuronal Networks (CNN) provide a breakthrough in detection scores, especially in video applications. This paper presents an approach for object recognition in videos by combining Kalman filter with CNN. Kalman filter is first applied for detection, removing the background and then cropping object. Kalman filtering achieves three important functions: predicting the future location of the object, reducing noise and interference from incorrect detections, and associating multi-objects to tracks. After detection and cropping the moving object, a CNN model will predict the category of object. The …

Opportunistic Premise Plumbing Pathogens. A Potential Health Risk In Water Mist Systems Used As A Cooling Intervention, Edmore Masaka, Sue Reed, Maggie Davidson, Jacques Oosthuizen
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Water mist systems (WMS) are used for evaporative cooling in public areas. The health risks associated with their colonization by opportunistic premise plumbing pathogens (OPPPs) is not well understood. To advance the understanding of the potential health risk of OPPPs in WMS, biofilm, water and bioaerosol samples (n = 90) from ten (10) WMS in Australia were collected and analyzed by culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods to detect the occurrence of five representative OPPPs: Legionella pneumophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Mycobacterium avium, Naegleria fowleri and Acanthamoeba. P. aeruginosa (44%, n = 90) occurred more frequently in samples, followed by L. …

Experimental Study On Repeatedly Loaded Foundation Soil Strengthened By Wraparound Geosynthetic Reinforcement Technique, Muhammad Nouman Amjad Raja, Sanjay K. Shukla
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In the recent past, the potential benefits of wraparound geosynthetic reinforcement technique for constructing the reinforced soil foundations have been reported. This paper presents the experimental study on the behaviour of model strip footing resting on sandy soil bed reinforced with geosynthetic in wraparound and planar forms under monotonic and repeated loadings. The geosynthetic layers were laid according to the reinforcement ratio to minimise the scale effect. It is found that for the same amount of reinforcement material, the wraparound reinforced model resulted in less settlement in comparison to planar reinforced models. The efficiency of wraparound reinforced model increased with …

Performance Of Fft-Ofdm Versus Dwt-Ofdm Under Compressive Sensing, Zainab Hdeib Al-Shably, Zahir M. Hussain
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In this work, we present a comparative study on the performance of Fourier-based OFDM (FFT-OFDM) and wavelet-based OFDM (DWT-OFDM) under compressive sensing (CS). Transmission over FFT-OFDM and DWT-OFDM, which has been made under different baseband modulation schemes such as Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK), Quadrature Phase Shift Key (QPSK), Quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) and (64QAM) has been considered. From numerical simulation results, it is observed that the Wavelet-based OFDM system outperforms Fourier based OFDM when the Quadrature Amplitude Modulation is 16QAM and 64QAM within the signal to noise ratios range 30 to 40 dB. Although CS is more efficient in …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Context: Seagrass meadows act as efficient natural carbon sinks by sequestering atmospheric CO and through trapping of allochthonous organic material, thereby preserving organic carbon (C ) in their sediments. Less understood is the influence of landscape configuration and transformation (land-use change) on carbon sequestration dynamics in coastal seascapes across the land–sea interface. Objectives: We explored the influence of landscape configuration and degradation of adjacent mangroves on the dynamics and fate of C in seagrass habitats. Methods: Through predictive modelling, we assessed sedimentary C content, stocks and source composition in multiple seascapes (km-wide buffer zones) dominated by different seagrass communities in …

Comparison Of Weighted And Unweighted Methods Of Wealth Indices For Assessing Socio-Economic Status, Muhammad Tareq, Assim Ibrahim Abdel-Razzaq, Md Arafat Rahman, Tonmoy Choudhury
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Due to some of the limitations of monetary measures, various non-monetary approaches for assessing household wealth have been developed as alternative tools for classifying household socio-economic status. Among them, wealth indices based on household durable assets are being used. The literature revealed that two basic methods of constructing wealth indices are employed: an unweighted method, where assets are weighted equally; and a weighted method, where specific weights are assigned to assets. In the case of using the weighted method, weighting can be assigned using various techniques. The overall objective of the study is to compare the wealth indices constructed by …

Chronic Nitrite Treatment Activates Adenosine Monophosphate-Activated Protein Kinase-Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase Pathway In Human Aortic Endothelial Cells, Yang Liu, Kevin D. Croft, Jonathan M. Hodgson, Trevor Mori, Natalie C. Ward
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Endothelial dysfunction, with impaired bioavailability and/or bioactivity of the vasoprotective molecule, nitric oxide, appears to be a vital step in the initiation of atherosclerosis. Several studies have shown that dietary nitrate/nitrite can have significant benefits on human cardiovascular homeostasis. Although serum nitrite concentrations can reach micromolar levels, the physiological significance of nitrate/nitrite in normal tissues has not been fully elucidated. We investigated in vitro the chronic effects of nitrate/nitrite on endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) to determine the potential vasoprotective effects of nitrate/nitrite and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Our results demonstrate the expression of phosphorylated eNOS at Ser1177 and phosphorylated …

Modulation Of Torque Evoked By Wide-Pulse, High-Frequency Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation And The Potential Implications For Rehabilitation And Training, Chris Donnelly, Jonathan Stegmüller, Anthony J. Blazevich, Fabienne Crettaz Von Roten, Bengt Kayser, Daria Neyroud, Nicolas Place
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The effectiveness of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) for rehabilitation is proportional to the evoked torque. The progressive increase in torque (extra torque) that may develop in response to low intensity wide-pulse high-frequency (WPHF) NMES holds great promise for rehabilitation as it overcomes the main limitation of NMES, namely discomfort. WPHF NMES extra torque is thought to result from reflexively recruited motor units at the spinal level. However, whether WPHF NMES evoked force can be modulated is unknown. Therefore, we examined the effect of two interventions known to change the state of spinal circuitry in opposite ways on evoked torque and …

The rapid expansion of urban areas worldwide is leading to native habitat loss and ecosystem fragmentation and degradation. Although the study of urbanisation's impact on biodiversity is gaining increasing interest globally, there is still a disconnect between research recommendations and urbanisation strategies. Expansion of the Perth metropolitan area on the Swan Coastal Plain in south-western Australia, one of the world's thirty-six biodiversity hotspots, continues to affect the Banksia Woodlands (BWs) ecosystem, a federally listed Threatened Ecological Community (TEC). Here, we utilise the framework of a 1989 review of the state of knowledge of BWs ecology and conservation to examine scientific …

Mechanism For The Unfolding Of The Top7 Protein In Steered Molecular Dynamics Simulations As Revealed By Mutual Information Analysis, Ognjen Perišić, Willy Wriggers
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
We employed mutual information (MI) analysis to detect motions affecting the mechanical resistance of the human-engineered protein Top7. The results are based on the MI analysis of pair contact correlations measured in steered molecular dynamics (SMD) trajectories and their statistical dependence on global unfolding. This study is the first application of the MI analysis to SMD forced unfolding, and we furnish specific SMD recommendations for the utility of parameters and options in the TimeScapes package. The MI analysis provided a global overview of the effect of perturbation on the stability of the protein. We also employed a more conventional trajectory …
