Equipping Community Health Workers With Digital Tools For Pandemic Response In Lmics, Anam Shahil Feroz, Adeel Khoja, Sarah Saleem
Community Health Sciences
Background: Community health workers (CHWs) are well-positioned to play a pivotal role in fighting the pandemic at the community level. The Covid-19 outbreak has led to a lot of stress and anxiety among CHWs as they are expected to perform pandemic related tasks along with the delivery of essential healthcare services. In addition, movement restrictions, lockdowns, social distancing, and lack of protective gear have significantly affected CHWs' routine workflow and performance. To optimize CHWs' functioning, there is a renewed interest in supporting CHWs with digital technology to ensure an appropriate pandemic response.
Discussion: The current situation has necessitated the use …

Plasmid-Based Reverse Genetics For Probing Phosphorylation-Dependent Viroplasm Formation In Rotaviruses, Jeanette M Criglar, Sue E Crawford, Mary K Estes
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Rotavirus (RV) replication occurs in cytoplasmic compartments, known as viroplasms, that are composed of viral and cellular proteins. Viroplasm formation requires RV nonstructural proteins NSP2 and NSP5 and cellular lipid droplets (LDs); however, the mechanisms required for viroplasm assembly remain largely unknown. We previously identified two conformationally-distinct forms of NSP2 (dNSP2, vNSP2) found in RV-infected cells that interact differentially with hypo- and hyperphosphorylated NSP5, respectively, and indicate a coordinated phosphorylation-dependent mechanism regulating viroplasm assembly. We also reported that phosphorylation of dNSP2 on serine 313 by the cellular kinase CK1α triggers the localization of vNSP2 to sites of viroplasm assembly and …

Have you ever had a vaccine? I have. Some haven’t. I remember when I was a kid,
maybe around six, sitting on the paper-covered exam table in my doctor’s office. The room was sterile and cold, and a nurse was approaching me with the needle. Like most children, I was absolutely petrified. The fear of the unknown, of the pain, of a foreign metal penetrating my body...completely out of control and unaware of what it was supposed to protect me from...only aware of the fear. I cried. I tried to get away. They had to hold my arm down to …

Communicative Development And Diffusion Of Humanoid Ai Robots For The Post-Pandemic Health Care System, Do Kyun David Kim, Gary L. Kreps, Rukhsana Ahmed
Communication Faculty Scholarship
As humanoid robot technology, anthropomorphized by artificial intelligence (AI), has rapidly advanced to introduce more human-resembling automated robots that can communicate, interact, and work like humans, we have begun to expect active interactions with Humanoid AI Robots (HAIRs) in the near future. Coupled with the HAIR technology development, the COVID-19 pandemic triggered our interest in using health care robots with many substantial advantages that overcome critical human vulnerabilities against the strong infectious COVID-19 virus. Recognizing the tremendous potential for the active application of HAIRs, this article explores feasible ways to implement HAIRs in health care and patient services and suggests …

Stay-At-Home Order And Spatial Disparities In Covid-19 Pandemic In New York City, Youqin Huang, Rui Li
Understanding and eliminating minority health disparities in a 21st-century pandemic: A White Paper Collection
Much of the world has adopted unprecedented lockdown policies as the key method to address the spread of COVID-19; yet their effect on pandemic outcomes remain largely unknown. This research determines how mobility restriction policies and public transit system shape intra-city health disparities in this pandemic, using New York City as a case study. With a spatial method and multiple sources of data, this research demonstrates the effectiveness of the stay-at-home order. On average, people spent about 20% more time at home in 2020 than in the same period in 2019. Census tracts with people spending more time at home …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Current standards of care for decreasing the incidence of preterm labor and preterm birth are not decreasing the public health burden of spontaneous preterm birth. Preterm labor and birth contribute to the high infant mortality rate in the United States and around the world. The purpose of this paper is to review and examine research articles regarding the vaginal microbiomes and their association with preterm birth and preterm labor. A better understanding of the microbiome and how it influences labor may be a key component to reducing preterm labor and birth and ultimately decrease the infant mortality rate in the …

The Impact Systems Design And Leadership Practices Have On Technology Integration And Adaptation At The K-12 School Level During A Time Of Change, Gustavo Marcelo Loor
Theses and Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic has compelled K-12 schools and districts across the United States to quickly pivot to distance learning. This disruption to traditional in-person instruction required shifts in district leadership and teacher pedagogy. Previous research has shown that teachers must be provided with learning and supportive environments that cultivate and enhance their instructional technology proficiency and capabilities, hence the importance of technology leadership among K-12 administrators (Ertmer, 2005; Ertmer & Ottenbreit-Leftwich, 2010; Hennessy et al., 2005; Hew & Brush, 2007). However, much of the research in the field of K-12 technology integration has relied on quantitative and mixed-methods approaches to …

It also provides an opportunity to increase awareness of this underserved population and their unique situations. It is …
Short-Term Second-Hand Smoke Exposure Predisposes The Lung To Inflammation, Elastic Fiber Injury, And Pulmonary Emphysema, George Gu
Theses and Dissertations
To determine whether cigarette smoke exposure predisposes lungs to secondary injury, our laboratory developed a hamster model using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce pulmonary inflammation following exposure to second-hand smoke. With this model, inflammatory effects of LPS on smoke-exposed hamsters was measured by various morphological and biochemical parameters. Additional experiments studied the effects of exogenous ET-1 and BQ123, which modulate the adherence of inflammatory cells to lung capillary endothelium. Total bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) leukocytes, percent BALF neutrophils, and elastin-specific desmosine and isodesmosine (DID) crosslinks (free and peptide-bound) in BALF and whole lungs were measured 24 hours (hrs) after LPS treatment. …

Experimental Use Of Drosophila To Model Proliferation Of Sars-Cov-2 Infected Cells, Valerie Wicks
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
Drosophila have been vectors for scientific research since the beginning of the 20th century. Their successful use within experiments that investigated mendelian genetics inspired their continuous application to biological research. This includes topics that detailed what is now known as innate immunity. The innate immune system of Drosophila is a first line of defense against pathogens. Innate immunity has been extensively researched and has reserved responses between Drosophila and mammals. Specifically, Drosophila have been experimentally targeted to draw conclusions on human infecting viruses such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-Cov-1). Such experiments modeled viral …

The dissemination of COVID-19 around the globe has been followed by an increased consumption of antibiotics. This is related to the concern for bacterial superinfection in COVID-19 patients. The identification of bacterial pathogens is challenging in low and middle income countries (LMIC), as there are no readily-available and cost-effective clinical or biological markers that can effectively discriminate between bacterial and viral infections. Fortunately, faced with the threat of COVID-19 spread, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of antimicrobial stewardship programs, as well as infection prevention and control measures that could help reduce the microbial load and hence …
