Fanconi Syndrome Leading To Hypophosphatemic Osteomalacia Related To Tenofovir Use., Mana Rao, Liam Dadey, Thomas Glowa, Peter Veldkamp
Parkview Pharmacy Department
Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) is used worldwide to treat and prevent Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. Fanconi syndrome is a complication of TDF use and is characterized by inadequate reabsorption of glucose, phosphate and protein in the proximal tubule of the kidney which may eventually lead to osteomalacia manifested by symptoms of pain, muscular weakness and difficulty ambulating. We present a patient with severe osteomalacia due to progressive and unrecognized Fanconi's syndrome, who responded rapidly to TDF withdrawal, oral phosphate repletion and calcitriol. With the widespread use of TDF-containing antiviral regimens, it is critically important that physicians adhere to screening …

Increased Antimicrobial And Multidrug Resistance Downstream Of Wastewater Treatment Plants In An Urban Watershed, Maitreyee Mukherjee, Edward Laird, Terry J. Gentry, John P. Brooks, Raghupathy Karthikeyan
Faculty Publications
Development and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and multidrug resistance (MDR) through propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) in various environments is a global emerging public health concern. The role of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) as hot spots for the dissemination of AMR and MDR has been widely pointed out by the scientific community. In this study, we collected surface water samples from sites upstream and downstream of two WWTP discharge points in an urban watershed in the Bryan-College Station (BCS), Texas area, over a period of nine months. E. coli isolates were tested for resistance to ampicillin, tetracycline, sulfamethoxazole, …

Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium vivax are protozoan parasites that can cause malaria in humans. They are genetically indistinguishable from, respectively, Plasmodium brasilianum and Plasmodium simium, that is, parasites infecting New World non-human primates in South America. In the tropical rainforests of the Brazilian Atlantic coast, it has long been hypothesized that P. brasilianum and P. simium in platyrrhine primates originated from P. malariae and P. vivax in humans. A recent hypothesis proposed the inclusion of Plasmodium falciparum into the transmission dynamics between humans and non-human primates in the Brazilian Atlantic tropical rainforest. Herein, we assess the occurrence of human …

Removal Of Ana Language To Increase Access To Vaccination Compliance, Steven G. Pochop Jr.
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Background: In 2015, the American Nurses Association (ANA) revised their immunization and vaccine policy statement to address the culture of vaccines that was prevalent in 2015. Due to evolving climate and growth in vaccination noncompliance as evidenced by recent outbreaks of vaccine preventable illnesses.
Purpose of Project: It is my recommendation that the ANA remove their endorsement of religious exemption from vaccinations in their policy statement, considering misapplications for which the exemption was not designed and that compromises the safety of the public. Additionally, annual medical exemption recertification signed by a qualified provider will become the recommended standard of practice. …

Management Of Mild Abscesses In Adult Patients, Liliana Pittman
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
The aim of this evidence-based project was to improve the management of purulent skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) among male inmates incarcerated within a detention facility in Southern California. Standardizing the use of the Infectious Diseases of America (IDSA) guidelines could ensure improved management of mild abscesses. The IDSA guideline supported the use of incision and drainage of mild abscesses without the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics when clinically appropriate. Over the past decade, the emergence of multi-resistant pathogens has contributed to an increase in the incidence of SSTIs. In 2012, the total cost of SSTIs in the United States …

A Guide To Vaccine Policy Change At A National Level, Janelle Bird
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Abstract
Health policy is in a near constant state of improvement. In order to solidify those improvements, health policy requires assistance from the upcoming generations of healthcare workers to push for those changes. Due to the outdated vaccination policy in the American Nurses Association (ANA), many states continued to issue exemptions based upon unsupported religious preferences. This helped to worsen the outbreak of measles in 2018-2019. The Previous ANA Policy on Vaccinations as of July 21, 2015 stated the ANA supports immunization exemptions only for the following reasons: Medical contraindications and Religious beliefs. Educate and train future health care professionals …
Singing For Speech: A Choral Program For Communication Skills For Clients With Parkinson's. A Review Of The Literature, Carol Smolenski
Singing For Speech: A Choral Program For Communication Skills For Clients With Parkinson's. A Review Of The Literature, Carol Smolenski
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a neuro-degenerative condition that impacts motor functions, causing tremors, postural instability, and difficulties initiating or coordinating movement. The resulting loss of oral-motor coordination, decline in respiratory function, and impacts on gait and posture all can affect the voice, leading to declines in effective expressive language. Challenges with communication can lead to social isolation and withdrawal. This literature review provides rationale for the establishment of a highly structured choir program, to be jointly administered by a certified music therapist and a licensed speech pathologist, to support speech and communication goals. The proposed protocol includes techniques derived from …
Mindfulness-Based Interventions For Prenatal Stress, Anxiety, And Depression, Fiona Kate Rice
Mindfulness-Based Interventions For Prenatal Stress, Anxiety, And Depression, Fiona Kate Rice
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Pregnant people in the United States (US) face myriad barriers to resource accessibility when seeking support, including financial gatekeeping, discrimination, and cis-gendering of the process. Commodification of prenatal support is exhaustive and contributes to a growing exclusivity of traditionally accessible interventions designed to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and to promote positive fetal outcomes and parent-child bond. Mindfulness-based interventions are particularly appropriate for reducing stress, anxiety, and depression in pregnancy. Mindfulness-based interventions are intersectional, accessible means of pregnancy and childbirth support with evidence-based outcomes of positive birth experiences and results. Mindfulness is defined as nonjudgmental awareness of the present moment. …

Reclaiming Voice Following Sexual Trauma Utilizing Photo Narrative Therapy: A Literature Review, Mikayla G. Crieger
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
In this critical literature review, the question of how to reclaim voice and re-empower self following singular or multiple experiences of sexual trauma by means of utilizing photo narrative therapy is explored. Cognitive processing therapy, a general trauma-informed framework, narrative therapy, and a creative arts therapy lens, specifically art therapy, focusing on the use of photography and writing, is used to analyze this topic. Sexual trauma and violence is pervasive, with research often focusing on women and involving traditional methods of psychotherapy as treatment. Photography, phototherapy, and narrative have become emerging interventions that have a place in helping individuals grow …

The Pursuit Of Housing: Chronically Homeless Men And Their Experiences Seeking Affordable Housing, Serena Cardoso Ma, Lmhc
Counseling and Psychology Dissertations
Homelessness, or the lack of consistent and safe shelter, is a byproduct of nearly every social justice issue in the United States, including racism, sexism, income disparities, and inadequate education and healthcare. Chronic homelessness is a term used to describe an individual who has spent at least one year or repeated events totaling one year in homelessness, coupled with a disabling condition such as mental illness, physical disability, or substance use. Chronically homeless men deserve study because they make up the largest subgroup of the homeless population, are disproportionately men of color, and experience significant levels of traumatic stress. While …

Development Of An Ehealth Harm Reduction Resource To Address Opioid Use Among Youth In Rural Northern California, Carolyn Perrotti Lake
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Problem: Opioid use and misuse is a leading cause of injury and death among adolescents and young adults in the United States, with a three-fold increase in opioid overdoses since 2000 (Carney et al., 2018; Hudgins et al., 2019). Opioid misuse correlates with misuse of other substances, which exponentially increases health risks over time. The most effective treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) among adolescence is through effective prevention interventions that either prevent the development of the OUD or enable timely diagnosis and treatment in order to prevent poor health outcomes.
Context: The use of eHealth technology, which has …

Cancer Salt Nostalgia, Aashish S. Allu, Venkataswarup Tiriveedhi
Biology Faculty Research
High-salt (sodium chloride) diets have been strongly associated with disease states and poor health outcomes. Traditionally, the impact of salt intake is primarily studied in cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and renal diseases; however, recently there has been increasing evidence demonstrating the role of salt in autoimmune diseases. Salt has been shown to modulate the inflammatory activation of immune cells leading to chronic inflammation-related ailments. To date, there is minimal evidence showing a direct correlation of salt with cancer incidence and/or cancer-related adverse clinical outcomes. In this review article, we will discuss the recent understanding of the molecular role of salt, and …
Preventing Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections In An Adult Intensive Care Unit, Monica Shaw
Preventing Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections In An Adult Intensive Care Unit, Monica Shaw
Master's Projects and Capstones
Central line associated blood stream infections (CLABSI) are considered preventable healthcare acquired infections, and are associated with significantly increased morbidity, mortality, and length of hospital stay. The CLABSI rate in an inpatient unit is a meaningful metric in relation to the safety and quality of care in that microsystem. This quality improvement project examines the efficacy of a CLABSI prevention bundle in reducing CLABSI events and improving adherence to central line care policy within a medical surgical adult intensive care unit. The target areas the bundle aimed to improve were unit processes, awareness of CLABSI and central line policies, and …

Deai In Nonprofits: Through The Lens Of Museums And Gardens, Brittany Jones
Master's Projects and Capstones
This research works to understand and identify diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) practices within nonprofits through the examination of museums and public gardens. Museums and public gardens provide a generous example of nonprofit organizations that must dutifully serve the communities which surround them, as well as examine internal practices and structures. As the momentum of the racial justice movement increased in 2020, following horrific tragedies in the U.S., the work around DEAI is more relevant than ever. Through this research, identification of barriers and challenges which prevent organizations from doing DEAI work is examined. This research is carried out …

Planting Seeds For Success: An Evaluation Of Agricultural Reentry Programming For Formerly Incarcerated Individuals, David J. Jefferson
Master's Projects and Capstones
Black and brown communities are over-incarcerated and are much more likely than their white counterparts to be involved with the criminal justice system. Hundreds of thousands of incarcerated people are released each year and they face substantial barriers to reentry such as lack of employment opportunities, difficulty securing housing, accessing education, and just simply reintegrating back into society. The criminal justice system within the United States is fueled by systemic racism and overt discrimination towards people of color, and the same can be said for the food system within the United States as well. They share a history of oppressive …

Improving Vaccination Uptake In The Latinx Community Through Standardized Outreach, Stephanie Ramirez
Master's Projects and Capstones
In the United States, Latinx communities have experienced a disproportionately high burden of COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations throughout the pandemic. The focus of this quality improvement project is to standardize the patient outreach process and education to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake. The ambulatory community clinic in the city of Oakland, California serves a majority of underserved Latinx patients that have demonstrated distrust of the healthcare system and their disbelief in the positive outcomes of the COVID-19 vaccine. The high burden of COVID-19 infections among the Latinx community has led to misinformation and fear. In order to overcome this issue, Clinical …

This article explores the thesis that we are at a time of historical inflection and suggests what next steps might look like. The change in the seat of authority from the sixteenth century on with the replacement of political and religious hierarchies by participatory democracy and Enlightenment philosophies based on rationalism has seen a remarkable period of progress in science, technology, education, medicine, governance, trade, economics, and the rule of law. The twenty-first century, however, has ushered in a series of reversals for liberal democracy, the fraying of the international rules-based order that emerged after the two world wars and …
Hey Google: How Can We Build Critical Media Literacy?, Wilson Wang
Hey Google: How Can We Build Critical Media Literacy?, Wilson Wang
Master's Theses
The year 2020 spotlighted problematic media coverage of the global coronavirus pandemic. Conflicting narratives of the origin of the “China virus” (Campbell & Park, 2020), the silenced journalistic freedoms (Davidson, 2020), and the impact on communities of color (Williams, 2021) created mass confusion during the global pandemic. To help address our understanding of media, teaching civic online reasoning (Wineburg & McGrew, 2017) and critical media literacy are two potential points of emphasis. Building critical media literacy helps resist the echo chamber effect of social media and cable news, which results in polarization and difficult mediation between parties (Bexley & Tchailoro, …
