Using Infographics To Improve Completion Rates Of The Sepsis Protocol Bundle, Stephen Newbern Jul 2021

Using Infographics To Improve Completion Rates Of The Sepsis Protocol Bundle, Stephen Newbern

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Hospitals have sepsis protocols that must be implemented when a patient shows positive signs and symptoms of a septic infection. Nurses learn about sepsis in nursing school and rarely further their education beyond this basic understanding of the disease. So, when nurses fail to comply with organizational instructions outlined within a defined sepsis protocol bundle, this often leads to a progression of severe sepsis in a patient and, most likely, increased cost for the healthcare facility. Multiple sepsis protocol bundle failures negatively impact organizational ratings established by The Joint Commission for patient care and are highly associated with increased sepsis …

Re-Educating Healthcare Workers In Long-Term Care Facilities To Improve Hand Hygiene Compliance, Jennifer A. Ukeje Jul 2021

Re-Educating Healthcare Workers In Long-Term Care Facilities To Improve Hand Hygiene Compliance, Jennifer A. Ukeje

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Hand hygiene is one of the most significant measures for protecting nursing home residents from healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). An estimated 1.6 million to 3.8 million infections occur each year; of these infections, 32% of all healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are urinary tract infections (UTI), 15% are pneumonia (lung infection), and 14% are bloodstream infections. The high incidence of HAIs in nursing homes is due to multiple factors such as understaffing, inadequately trained staff, staff to resident ratio, lack of antibiotics stewardship, and the increasing clinical complexity of the average nursing home. In addition, most long- term care (LTC) residents are older …

Implementing An Antibiotic Stewardship Education Program To Decrease Antibiotic Prescriptions In An Urgent Care Clinic, James Gramling

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Antibiotics are often prescribed for respiratory infections. These infections often have a viral rather than a bacterial source. Overuse of antibiotics is associated with increased potential for adverse effects, increased healthcare costs, and increasing antibiotic resistance. The purpose of this DNP project was to determine if implementing an antibiotic stewardship program at an urgent care clinic would decrease the number of antibiotic prescriptions written for acute respiratory tract infections. An educational session consisting of didactic and PowerPoint presentations was provided to each provider at the urgent care clinic. Medical records were reviewed for four weeks after completion of the session …

Methods Of Educating Nursing Students On Proper Handwashing To Enhance Infection Control During The Covid Pandemic, Yulanda King Jul 2021

Methods Of Educating Nursing Students On Proper Handwashing To Enhance Infection Control During The Covid Pandemic, Yulanda King

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Medical professionals have commonly been urged to use soap and water to sanitize their hands to prevent contamination and disease transmission. However, thorough handwashing requires a couple of minutes to clean hands thoroughly. Considering that health professionals must sanitize their hands' multiply times during a day, handwashing consumes a significant amount of time away from bedside care. Time spent away from patients may also result in a substantial decrease in the quality of healthcare services provided by the medical institution.

Purpose: This project evaluates the current policy and procedure for appropriate use of handwashing versus hand sanitizer in the …

Average adherence (Av-Adh) and log-transformed treatment interruption (TI) to ARV were prospectively measured over 6 months using electronic drug monitoring (EDM) in several cohorts of PWH. Multivariate linear regression models including baseline confounders explored the influence of EDM-defined adherence (R2) on 6-month log10 HIV-RNA. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to compare the risk of HIV-RNA detection (VR) within subgroups stratified by lower (≤95%) and higher (>95%) Av-Adh.

Three hundred ninety-nine PWH were analyzed with different ARVs: dolutegravir (n = 102), raltegravir (n = 90), boosted PI (bPI; n = 107), and NNRTI (n = 100). …

Targeting Modern Pathogens With Rational Drug Design, Michael Dominic Sacco Jul 2021

Targeting Modern Pathogens With Rational Drug Design, Michael Dominic Sacco

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since the first living organisms appeared on earth, their very existence was dependent on their ability to contend for resources. To this day, organisms are perpetually competing for resources, and in doing so, have evolved highly effective defense mechanisms and systems for propagation. Although invisible to the eye, we live in a world teeming with microbes and viruses. While many are harmless, others cause widespread disease. One of the key niches for these pathogens, particularly bacteria, are health-care facilities. These health-care facilities have a high concentration of immunocompromised patients and rely heavily on antibiotics, which strongly contributes to antibiotic resistance. …

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) pose a major threat to public health in sub-Saharan African communities, where the burden of these classes of illnesses is expected to double by 2030. Growing research suggests that past developmental experiences and early life conditions may also elevate CVD risk throughout the life course. Greater childhood stress and adversity are consistently associated with a range of adult CVDs and associated risk factors, yet little research exists on the long-term effects of early life stress on adult physical health outcomes, especially CVD risk, in sub-Saharan African contexts. This study aims to evaluate the associations between adverse …

Functional And Phenotypic Evaluation Of Murine Cytomegalovirus Infection Of The Heart, Cassandra Marie Bonavita Jul 2021

Functional And Phenotypic Evaluation Of Murine Cytomegalovirus Infection Of The Heart, Cassandra Marie Bonavita

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a ubiquitous pathogen which infects 50-90% of the world population and results in lifelong latent infection with periodic transient reactivations. In immunocompetent populations acute infection is generally asymptomatic but seropositivity is associated with many chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Despite 139 years of research into HCMV pathogenesis there is still no licensed vaccine and many gaps in the general knowledge of the virus. This includes the role of long term infection as it pertains to chronic diseases. In these studies, murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) was used as a model of HCMV pathogenesis in the heart. MCMV shares …

Testing A Bite-Shortened Hook To Minimize Fish Handling In A Recreational Fishery, Holden E. Harris, Brian K. Whalen, Andrew G. Gude, Michael S. Allen

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Discard mortality can make fishing unsustainable, even in catch-and-release or highly regulated fisheries. However, fishing practices and gears that minimize hook injury, handling, and air exposure can considerably improve fitness and survival in released fish. This study tested whether modified hooks could allow anglers to successfully land and then release fish in the water and without handling. Standard, barbless, and bite-shortened hooks were used to catch Spotted Seatrout Cynoscion nebulosus (n > 75 per hook type), and logistic models were used to assess the differences in landing success and hook self-release success by hook type and categorical fish size. Average landing …
