Pictures As Mirrors For Shah Tahmasb: How Manuscript Paintings Shaped Court Culture In Early Modern Iran, Selin Unluonen Oct 2021

Pictures As Mirrors For Shah Tahmasb: How Manuscript Paintings Shaped Court Culture In Early Modern Iran, Selin Unluonen

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation investigates how sixteenth-century manuscript paintings shaped courtly identity and behavior at a time of sweeping political change in Iran. During the first half of the sixteenth century, rulers of the new Safavid dynasty in Iran commissioned richly illustrated manuscripts. Turning to a corpus of paintings from a royal copy of the medieval Persian epic Khamsa, this study examines these paintings in light of the numerous extratextual inscriptions incorporated into the pictorial world (an unstudied body of evidence despite the book’s renown), and puts them in dialogue with autobiographical writings, court chronicles, diplomatic letters, and literary anthologies from the …

Russel Nye And The Unending Struggle To Keep Government Representative, Nancy Unger Oct 2021

Russel Nye And The Unending Struggle To Keep Government Representative, Nancy Unger

History

In his invitation to participate in this symposium on Russell Nye’s Midwestern Progressive Politics: A Historical Study of Its Origins and Development, 1870-1950, Jon Lauck gave us free rein. He did, however, suggest that we comment on how the book has aged and what Nye missed; how the reform era can be seen in regional terms; and whether Midwestern reform was moderate or radical. To address his first possibility: upon re-reading this classic, my overall reaction was decidedly mixed. In many ways, the book is emphatically a product of 1951. In contrast to today’s political histories, the lacunas are …

A Mixed-Methods Investigation Of First-Year Learning Communities In A Private, Midwestern University, Elaine M. Ragland Oct 2021

A Mixed-Methods Investigation Of First-Year Learning Communities In A Private, Midwestern University, Elaine M. Ragland

Dissertations

In the 2017-2018 academic year, the School of Humanities of a private, Midwestern university began a pilot program of two first-year learning communities in the Fall, with an additional learning community in the Spring. Each learning community consisted of three theme-linked courses, for a total of nine courses over two semesters. As the study unfolded, the first and the third of the learning communities lived up to expectations of the faculty and administrators as communities of increased engagement and academic success. The second community struggled with engagement and both students and faculty felt that their theme-linked group failed to demonstrate …

Millais’ Modern Christ: Religion And Critical Responses To The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood In Nineteenth Century England, Ashley Morse Oct 2021

Millais’ Modern Christ: Religion And Critical Responses To The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood In Nineteenth Century England, Ashley Morse

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores how the press reviewed Pre-Raphaelite paintings in the years 1849 and 1850 with a partial review of 1851. In particular, the focus is on the controversial painting Christ in the House of his Parents by John Everett Millais. This painting became a physical symbol of the many fears that the new modern age brought to Victorian England. Catholic, Irish, and Protestant tensions had been mounting throughout the nineteenth century in England prior to the debut of the painting. Politics and law were beginning to relax restraints on Catholicism in addition to the increased immigration of Irish Catholics. …

Hindlimb Suspension In Wistar Rats: Sex-Based Differences In Muscle Response, Marie Mortreux, Megan E. Rosa-Caldwell, Ian D. Stiehl, Dong Min Sung, Nicholas T. Thomas, Christopher S. Fry, Seward B. Rutkove Oct 2021

Hindlimb Suspension In Wistar Rats: Sex-Based Differences In Muscle Response, Marie Mortreux, Megan E. Rosa-Caldwell, Ian D. Stiehl, Dong Min Sung, Nicholas T. Thomas, Christopher S. Fry, Seward B. Rutkove

Dartmouth Scholarship

Ground-based animal models have been used extensively to understand the effects of microgravity on various physiological systems. Among them, hindlimb suspension (HLS), developed in 1979 in rats, remains the gold-standard and allows researchers to study the consequences of total unloading of the hind limbs while inducing a cephalic fluid shift. While this model has already brought valuable insights to space biology, few studies have directly compared functional decrements in the muscles of males and females during HLS. We exposed 28 adult Wistar rats (14 males and 14 females) to 14 days of HLS or normal loading (NL) to better assess …

A Conductor’S Guide To J. N. Hummel’S Forgotten Oratorio: Der Durchzug Durchs Rote Meer, Rebecca J. Ostermann

Theses and Dissertations

Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s only oratorio, Der Durchzug durchs rote Meer, was lost to the musical world until around 2004. Hummel (1778–1837) was greatly esteemed during his life as a concert pianist and as a composer, and several of his choral works were among those highly regarded by his contemporaries. Interest in his works, along with Hummel scholarship, has increased in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Hummel’s oratorio is for Classical orchestra plus guitar, harp, and bass drum, four to ten vocal soli, and chorus. Its thirteen numbers run about 51 minutes, recounting the biblical story of Moses and Pharaoh, the …

Using Dialectic Thematic Analysis In Dark Tourism: Combining Deductive And Inductive Reasoning In A Modular Method, Martin Maccarthy Sep 2021

Using Dialectic Thematic Analysis In Dark Tourism: Combining Deductive And Inductive Reasoning In A Modular Method, Martin Maccarthy

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This study combines the results of two antithetical research processes: induction and deduction. Using a prescribed dialectic method commemorative pilgrimage at two non-substitutable sites is explored. A metamodel, comprising an amalgam of published commemorative models and ideas is first constructed and used as the project's interpretive frame. Parsing the metamodel produces 17 constructs: four of which are motives (inputs) and 11 of which are typified behaviours (outputs). The combined data from two Australian memorials; one in Western Australia and one in France is then analysed using the metamodel as representative of existing theory. The constructs are then deduced whilst simultaneously …

An estimated 70 million persons in the Western Hemisphere are living at risk for Chagas disease, a parasitic infection transmitted to humans by over 156 different competent triatomine insect vector species. Prior Pan American Health Organization insecticide campaigns throughout Latin America in the 1990s and 2000s demonstrated that domestic insecticide spraying had temporary effects, which resulted in the re-establishment of triatomine species within a few years. Serendipitously, our team found ectoparasitic mites parasitizing triatomines collected from the field in multiple locations in the southwestern United States, where human–triatomine interaction was high but human parasite infection remains low. Upon further investigation …

Tracing The Roots Of Disjunction : Dutertismo And The Discourse Of Liberal Democracy In The Philippines, Kristine Marie Tayo Reynaldo Sep 2021

Tracing The Roots Of Disjunction : Dutertismo And The Discourse Of Liberal Democracy In The Philippines, Kristine Marie Tayo Reynaldo

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

This dissertation examines Dutertismo as an event in the context of what it put forwards as the problem-spaces of Philippine postcolonial modernity: nationalism, democracy, and development. Specifically, it investigates the substance of the contemporary disjunction between the discourse of liberal democracy, which often frames critiques of Dutertismo, and Philippine social experience. Its objective is to examine the underlying causes of the democratic "crisis" that Dutertismo represents, both material/structural and discursive/ideological.

“Dutertismo,” a populist political movement and discourse, is characterized by its subversion of the inherited norms and mores of Philippine society, and consolidation of popular support for a charismatic leader …

Ungrading, Supporting Our Students Through A Pedagogy Of Care, Shaun Ferns, Robert Hickey, Helen Williams

Articles

The awarding of grades or marks to student work is traditionally considered a fundamental feature of assessment. Grades became more widely established in the twentieth century becoming ubiquitous across most educational institutions. There is increasing evidence to suggest that grades are not effective tools for promoting or measuring learning. One alternative approach for promoting and measuring learning is "Ungrading," in which no letter grades or marks are given to students. Instead, they are replaced with formative feedback provided through strategies such as individual feedback, peer review and self-assessment. An Ungrading approach promises increased learner motivation, a reduction in stress, and …

Comparison Of The Upper Airway Volume In Orthodontically Treated Cases With First Premolar Extractions, Krystal Park Sep 2021

Comparison Of The Upper Airway Volume In Orthodontically Treated Cases With First Premolar Extractions, Krystal Park

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Comprehensive orthodontic treatment often entails extraction of teeth to accomplish treatment goals. A potential side effect of extraction therapy is arch length shortening resulting in decreased space for the tongue which may cause a low tongue posture and a possible reduction in airway space. The purpose of the study was to retrospectively determine if extractions of all first premolars during orthodontic treatment and the resulting movement of mandibular incisors are correlated with a reduction in airway volume.

Materials and Methods: The T1 and T2 CBCT’s of 80 patients were collected and reviewed. The cases were divided into treatment (extraction) …

Just Doing Their Job: The Hidden Meteorologists Of Colonial Hong Kong C.1883–1914, Fiona Williamson

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article investigates the contribution made by indigenous employees to the work of the Hong Kong Observatory from its inception and into the early twentieth century. As has so often been the case in Western histories of science, the significance of indigenous workers and of women in the Hong Kong Observatory has been obscured by the stories of the government officials and observatory director(s). Yet without the employees, the service could not have functioned or grown. While the glimpses of their work and lives are fleeting, often only revealed in minor archival references, this article seeks to interrogate these sources …

The Evolution, Expansion, And Effects Of Intellectual Property Rights At American Higher Education Institutions: A Historical Context Of Legislation And Case Law At Harvard And Yale Universities, Lucia Antoinette Shipley

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation used a historical research method to examine the rise of the centuries-long complex construct of intellectual property ownership through the lenses of American institutions of higher learning and the American legal system, the latter of which attributing its involvement in intellectual property rights once the principle of ownership became equated with the profit of ownership. Because universities are the traditional factories for innovation, this phenomenon within this expanse of time can be better understood by focusing on two historical research institutions. The universities of Harvard and Yale were explored due to their operational and intellectual property experiences mirroring …

Delirium In Frail Older Adults, Min Ji Kwak Sep 2021

Delirium In Frail Older Adults, Min Ji Kwak

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Delirium and frailty are prevalent geriatric syndromes and important public health issues among older adults. The prevalence of delirium among hospitalized older adults ranges from 15% to 75%, while that of frailty ranges from 12% to 24%. The exact pathophysiology of these two conditions has not been clearly identified, although several hypotheses have been proposed. However, these conditions are considered to be multifactorial in etiology and are associated with inflammation related to aging, alterations in vascular systems, genetics, and nutritional deficiency. Furthermore, clinically, they are significantly associated with frailty, which increases the risk of delirium by almost two- to three-fold …
