African American English-Speaking Children's Judgments Of Grammaticality: Effects Of Clinical Status And Grammatical Structures, Lori Elizabeth Vaughn Nov 2021

African American English-Speaking Children's Judgments Of Grammaticality: Effects Of Clinical Status And Grammatical Structures, Lori Elizabeth Vaughn

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

African American English (AAE)-speaking children’s ability to judge the grammaticality of sentences was evaluated by their clinical status and grammatical structure. The study originated from a need to understand more about the tense and agreement systems of AAE speakers with specific language impairment (SLI) relative to their typically developing (TD) AAE-speaking peers. Tense and agreement forms are typically excluded from the assessment and treatment of children who speak AAE in fear of misinterpreting a dialect difference as a language disorder. As a result, limited information exists about the tense and agreement systems of AAE-speaking children.

The data were archival and …

The First Women Instrumentalists In The Penn State Marching Blue Band After The Enactment Of Title Ix, Michquelena Potlunas Ferguson Nov 2021

The First Women Instrumentalists In The Penn State Marching Blue Band After The Enactment Of Title Ix, Michquelena Potlunas Ferguson

Visions of Research in Music Education

Women at higher education institutions across the United States were granted equal rights for academic and athletic opportunities on their college campuses through the passage of Title IX in 1972. Although most consistently associated with women in sport, Title IX had lasting effects for music education and women’s participation in collegiate marching bands across the United States. Title IX prompted the Association of Women Students at Penn State University to lobby successfully on behalf of women instrumentalists’ right to audition and join the previously all-male instrumentalists of the Penn State Marching Blue Band in the fall of 1973. The purpose …

Elephant In The Music Room: A Content Analysis Of Ten Years Of Publications Related To Urban Music Education, Carol Frierson-Campbell, Constance L. Mckoy, Nicole R. Robinson Nov 2021

Elephant In The Music Room: A Content Analysis Of Ten Years Of Publications Related To Urban Music Education, Carol Frierson-Campbell, Constance L. Mckoy, Nicole R. Robinson

Visions of Research in Music Education

As suggested by the metaphor of the elephant in the (music) room, our field cannot challenge a problem that we do not acknowledge. The 10th anniversary of Teaching Music in the Urban Classroom provided a milestone for appraising the written conversation about music education in urban schools in the United States. To this end, three authors initiated a content analysis of publications from 2006-2015 that addressed urban contexts. Using Milner’s urban school typology and Farmer’s critical analysis of urban music education publications, we examined peer-reviewed trade and scholarly periodicals as well as master’s theses and doctoral dissertations. Our findings suggest …

The Teaching Approach Of A Notable African-American Music Teacher: An Intrinsic Case Study, C. Michael Palmer Nov 2021

The Teaching Approach Of A Notable African-American Music Teacher: An Intrinsic Case Study, C. Michael Palmer

Visions of Research in Music Education

This intrinsic case study examined the teaching philosophy and practice of Victoria Miller, a notable African-American music educator in Detroit. Utilizing the theoretical frameworks of social constructivism and Black feminism, I sought to answer the following research questions: (a) How does the teacher describe her teaching? (b) How do her students describe her teaching? and (c) How does her cultural background as an African American woman teacher influence her teaching? Data collected for this study consisted of field notes, teacher interviews, student interviews, and artifacts. Analysis of the data yielded four dominant themes: (a) Religious influence on teaching practice, (b) …

A Systematic Review And Reflection On The Dimensions Of Diversity Represented In Behavior Analytic Research, Jodie Waits Nov 2021

A Systematic Review And Reflection On The Dimensions Of Diversity Represented In Behavior Analytic Research, Jodie Waits

LSU Master's Theses

The United States continues to transition towards a majority-minority composition and this trend has most rapidly emerged for school-aged children. Work with diverse populations calls for specialized skills and training experiences, but these are not strongly reflected in most training programs in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). The present review was conducted to evaluate the scope and range of the dimensions of diversity included in Behavior Analytic research (e.g. race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, etc.), as well as to compile recommendations related to culturally responsive practice in ABA. The search revealed a total of 50 publications featuring a dimension of diversity. These works …

“This Was 1976 Reinvented”: The Role Of Framing In The Development Of A South African Youth Movement, Ben Kirshner, Tafadzwa Tivaringe, Jesica S. Fernández Nov 2021

“This Was 1976 Reinvented”: The Role Of Framing In The Development Of A South African Youth Movement, Ben Kirshner, Tafadzwa Tivaringe, Jesica S. Fernández

Ethnic Studies

The literature on contemporary youth organizing has documented psychological benefits associated with participation and some evidence of local political impact. But how do local organizing campaigns transform into regional or national movements? This is a practical question facing youth organizers and one that calls for attention from researchers. In this article, we draw on 3 years of ethnographic fieldwork with South Africa's Equal Education (EE) to analyze collective action frames that enabled EE youth to assert legitimacy and construct shared aims across locales. Our findings focus on how youth constructed historical continuity frames that lent them legitimacy as upholders of …

Migrant Misconceptions: A Review Of Literature On National Heritage, Immigration Status, And Juvenile Offending, Serita Whiting Nov 2021

Migrant Misconceptions: A Review Of Literature On National Heritage, Immigration Status, And Juvenile Offending, Serita Whiting

Contemporary Issues in Juvenile Justice

In 2020, the Pew Research Center reported over 40 million Latinx adults are immigrants and nearly 23% are U.S.-born adult children of immigrant parents. Some rhetoric that surrounds immigration is indicative of crime, criminals, and the need to build a wall to protect the U.S. border from migrant crossing. In the U.S., immigration policies apply a 'securitized' approach to criminal law enforcement involving Latinos. However, criminological literature indicates immigrants do not pose any more of a threat towards crime than a natural-born citizen. Continued research should be completed to better understand differences among immigrant youth compared to native-born Latino youth.

The Criminalization Of Foreign Relations, Steven Arrigg Koh Nov 2021

The Criminalization Of Foreign Relations, Steven Arrigg Koh

Fordham Law Review

Overcriminalization has rightly generated national condemnation among policymakers, scholars, and practitioners alike. And yet, such scholarship often assumes that the encroachment of criminal justice stops at our borders. This Article argues that our foreign relations are also at risk of overcriminalization due to overzealous prosecution, overreaching legislation, and presidential politicization—and that this may be particularly problematic when U.S. criminal justice supplants certain nonpenal U.S. foreign policies abroad. This Article proposes three key reforms—presidential distancing, prosecutorial integration, and legislative de-escalation—to assure a principled place for criminal justice in foreign relations.

The Effects Of Sports Participation On Academic Achievement For Seventh-Graders In Urban Pennsylvania, Jeffrey Steven White Nov 2021

The Effects Of Sports Participation On Academic Achievement For Seventh-Graders In Urban Pennsylvania, Jeffrey Steven White

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This quantitative, causal-comparative study was designed to investigate the effect of students’ participation in middle school interscholastic sports on their academic success among urban middle school students. The body of knowledge about the effect of participating in sports on academic achievement is comprehensive at the high school and college levels, but limited research has been done regarding sports participation among middle school students. The participants for this study were drawn from a convenience sample of 366 seventh-grade middle school students in eastern Pennsylvania during the 2018-2019 school year; stratified random sampling was also used to create groups with equal male …

The Loss Of Profit: The Use Of Maasai Culture For The Gain Of Louis Vuitton & Valentino, Caitlin Jeffrey Nov 2021

The Loss Of Profit: The Use Of Maasai Culture For The Gain Of Louis Vuitton & Valentino, Caitlin Jeffrey

Theses

This thesis focuses on how western fashion designers, Louis Vuitton and Valentino took elements from the Maasai tribe to develop profitable collections. This thesis looks at historical instances of appropriation by western designers as a catalyst for modern designers to appropriate marginalized and indigenous cultures in the 21st century. The aim of this thesis was to look at the issue of cultural appropriation inside the fashion industry with a lens from postcolonial indigenous methods and give examples of how western designers can avoid appropriation by utilizing specific guidelines based on appreciation and inspiration.

Considering Uncertainties Expands The Lower Tail Of Maize Yield Projections, Haochen Ye, Robert E. Nicholas, Samantha Roth, Klaus Keller Nov 2021

Considering Uncertainties Expands The Lower Tail Of Maize Yield Projections, Haochen Ye, Robert E. Nicholas, Samantha Roth, Klaus Keller

Dartmouth Scholarship

Crop yields are sensitive to extreme weather events. Improving the understanding of the mechanisms and the drivers of the projection uncertainties can help to improve decisions. Previous studies have provided important insights, but often sample only a small subset of potentially important uncertainties. Here we expand on a previous statistical modeling approach by refining the analyses of two uncertainty sources. Specifically, we assess the effects of uncertainties surrounding crop-yield model parameters and climate forcings on projected crop yield. We focus on maize yield projections in the eastern U.S.in this century. We quantify how considering more uncertainties expands the lower tail …

The Rhetorical Feature Of Chiasmus In The Quran And Its Translation Into English, Ahmad Al-Harahsheh Oct 2021

The Rhetorical Feature Of Chiasmus In The Quran And Its Translation Into English, Ahmad Al-Harahsheh

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

The study aimed to investigate the linguistic functions, patterns and translation of chiasmus in the Quran. The sample of the study consisted of 32 different verses from the Quran accompanied with four reliable translations of the Quran, namely Palmer, Arberry, Pickthall and Yusuf Ali to examine how these chiasms translated into English. The study relied on Nida’s (1964) formal approach to translation as a theoretical framework. The study concludes that there are five chiastic patterns in Arabic in the Quran: double-chiasm (AB- BA), tripartite-chiasm (ABC-CBA), quad-chiasm (ABCD-DCBA), quintuple-chiasm (ABCDE-EDCBA) and hexa-chiasm (ABCDEF-FEDCBA). These chiasms are contrasted in the same verse …

A Retrospective Quasi-Qualitative Synthesis Of The Literature To Identify And Evaluate Communication Processes In Community-Campus Partnerships To Address Health Disparities, Jennifer R. Warren

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Background: Community-campus partnerships have been a major developing field of study in improving health outcomes to reduce health disparities. However, there is limited literature that evaluates communication strategies used to improve health outcomes among disadvantaged populations during the early stages of implementing community-campus partnerships.

Objectives: Based on the Donabedian model, we conducted a retrospective quasi-qualitative synthesis of literature relating to the identification and evaluation of community engaged communication in community-campus partnerships to address health disparities.

Data sources: All published peer-reviewed articles from 2001 to 2013 that addressed health disparities in community-campus partnerships were reviewed. Key word searches …

Understanding Religious Tolerance In Yongchang, China, Liming Gao Oct 2021

Understanding Religious Tolerance In Yongchang, China, Liming Gao

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

The formation of China is a process of national integration and a fusion of different beliefs. However, under Chairman Mao (1949-1976) and specifically during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), people were reeducated to focus on Communism and expel remnants of traditional Chinese culture including the various religions. Although, after the Cultural Revolution, China reinstated its policy of religious freedom, there were still strict laws against religion. Despite such circumstances, Chinese people still practice their religious beliefs. The Yongchang area, located in Gansu Province in the northwest of China is a typical region of Chinese culture. At the same time, compared to …

Vowel Pronunciation As An Ethnic Marker: Pacific Islander Teens In Utah, Lisa M. Johnson Oct 2021

Vowel Pronunciation As An Ethnic Marker: Pacific Islander Teens In Utah, Lisa M. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Despite the growing numbers and visibility of Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders (NHPIs) in the U.S., these Americans are generally overlooked in the research on language variation. American dialectology tends to focus on speakers of European descent, and most research on minority ethno-racial groups has concentrated on larger demographic groups, such as African American and Latinx American groups. This combination of research deficits limits our understanding of linguistic variation and the social forces that influence it. In addition, it may reinforce stereotypes of “ethnolects” as nonstandard and wholly separate from regional and stylistic influence. (See Eckert, 2008.) Many of …

Pinpointing Patterns Of Violence: A Comparative Genocide Studies Approach To Violence Escalation In The Ukrainian Holodomor, Kristina Hook Oct 2021

Pinpointing Patterns Of Violence: A Comparative Genocide Studies Approach To Violence Escalation In The Ukrainian Holodomor, Kristina Hook

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This article utilizes the case study of the 1930s Ukrainian Holodomor, an artificially induced famine under Joseph Stalin, to advance comparative genocide studies debates regarding the nature, onset, and prevention of large-scale violence. Fieldwide debates question how to 1) distinguish genocide from other forms of large-scale violence and 2) trace genocides as unfolding processes, rather than crescendoing events. To circumvent unproductive definitional arguments, methodologies that track large-scale violence according to numerically-based thresholds have substituted for dynamics-based analyses. Able to address aspects of the genocide puzzle, these methodologies struggle to incorporate cross-cultural contextual variation or elicit ripe moments for specific, real-time …

A Marvelous Work: Reading Mormonism In West Africa, Laurie F. Maffly-Kipp Oct 2021

A Marvelous Work: Reading Mormonism In West Africa, Laurie F. Maffly-Kipp

Arrington Annual Lecture

Two decades before the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began official missionary work in West Africa, pamphlets, books, and other church materials had been circulating among Christians in Nigeria and Ghana. Brought by seekers who had studied abroad or encountered church members from other countries, those texts formed the basis for a Mormon community outside the bounds of U.S. institutional authority or oversight.

What did this "native" Mormonism look like, and how did believers craft churches out of the bare materials of tracts and inspirational volumes? This talk explores the circulation and interpretation of this homegrown Mormon faith …

Hindlimb Suspension In Wistar Rats: Sex-Based Differences In Muscle Response, Marie Mortreux, Megan E. Rosa-Caldwell, Ian D. Stiehl, Dong-Min Sung, Nicholas T. Thomas, Christopher S. Fry, Seward B. Rutkove

Athletic Training and Clinical Nutrition Faculty Publications

Ground-based animal models have been used extensively to understand the effects of microgravity on various physiological systems. Among them, hindlimb suspension (HLS), developed in 1979 in rats, remains the gold-standard and allows researchers to study the consequences of total unloading of the hind limbs while inducing a cephalic fluid shift. While this model has already brought valuable insights to space biology, few studies have directly compared functional decrements in the muscles of males and females during HLS. We exposed 28 adult Wistar rats (14 males and 14 females) to 14 days of HLS or normal loading (NL) to better assess …

Maternity Rights: A Comparative View Of Mexico And The United States, Roberto Rosas

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

Women play a large role in the workplace and require additional protection during pregnancy, childbirth, and while raising children. This article compares how Mexico and the United States have approached the issue of maternity rights and benefits. First, Mexico provides eighty-four days of paid leave to mothers, while the United States provides unpaid leave for up to twelve weeks. Second, Mexico allows two thirty-minute breaks a day for breastfeeding, while the United States allows a reasonable amount of time per day to breastfeed. Third, Mexico provides childcare to most federal employees, while the United States provides daycares to a small …

Social Control And Incarceration In Lesotho: A History Of Strategies, 1850-1970, Samuel John Severson

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation explores how technologies and infrastructures for promoting control and cohesion have interfaced with the social and political history of Lesotho over the longue durée. This approach allows for tracing lines of historical continuity and change during a period spanning the coalescing of the nation from communities on the Southern African Highveld in the early-19th century, the onset and grinding realities of British colonial rule and the rise of a local economy dependent on labor migration to South Africa, and the unravelling of empire and the challenges of governance in the years following official national liberation in 1966. I …
