Feet Of Clay: Queer Theory And The Church Of Jesus Christ, Gregory L. Smith
Feet Of Clay: Queer Theory And The Church Of Jesus Christ, Gregory L. Smith
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Tabernacles of Clay examines the discourse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through a “queer theory” lens. This review examines its first two chapters’ use of sources regarding Church teachings about eternal biological sex and homosexual behavior. These chapters claim that the Church treated homosexual sin leniently and said little about such acts until the more “homophobic” 1950s. There are, in fact, many examples of homosexual behavior being condemned by Church leaders in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Tabernacles further claims that in the 1950s–1970s, some in the Church saw biological sex as “created and contingent” …
After Whose Order? Kingship And Priesthood In The Book Of Mormon, Avram R. Shannon
After Whose Order? Kingship And Priesthood In The Book Of Mormon, Avram R. Shannon
BYU Studies
The Book of Mormon represents itself as a strand of Israelite and Judahite religious tradition that flourished somewhere in the New World. Its acceptance by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as scripture means that the Book of Mormon forms part of the essential worldview of the Church. It certainly informs practice and liturgy in the Church, as the adoption of the sacrament prayers from Moroni 3 and 4 as the regular sacrament prayers for the Church indicates.1 The interpretive road is not one-way, however. Just as the Book of Mormon informs and undergirds much of the teachings …
How Fundraisers Solve Moral Dilemmas: The Role Of Implicit Moral Identity, Moral Emotions And Moral Intuition, Jessica Lynne Burgess
How Fundraisers Solve Moral Dilemmas: The Role Of Implicit Moral Identity, Moral Emotions And Moral Intuition, Jessica Lynne Burgess
Plymouth Business School Theses
This study explores the mediating affect of moral emotions on the relationship of implicit moral identity and moral intuition amongst fundraisers. The existing literature highlights the importance of ethical fundraising, as evidenced by criticism in the media (Hill, 2019). In many cases, fundraisers must make moral decisions under intense time pressure. These situations require quick, on-the-spot decisions, which often comes from instinct. The Moral Foundations Theory explains that moral intuition works automatically through innate processes during such situations (Graham et al., 2013; Haidt & Joseph, 2007). It also suggests that moral emotions influence intuitions. Additionally, how much an individual identifies …
On The Domestication Of Critical Legal History, Justin Deystone, Samuel Moyn
On The Domestication Of Critical Legal History, Justin Deystone, Samuel Moyn
Publications
Among many of today’s legal historians, there is a relatively new and generally unreflective understanding of the relationship between history and method. The landscape is everywhere marked by a tendency to eschew big thinking, grand theory, and programmatic approaches to historical explanation and social transformation. In the place of the grand theory approach to law and history, there is a preference for the minimalist, the pragmatic, the particularistic, and the quotidian. What this normal science of today’s legal historiography makes obvious is a kind of attachment to particular kinds of problems with particular sorts of built-in solutions. The result for …
Medication Beliefs And Behaviors Of Hypertensive Caribbean Immigrants Living In New York City, Nadia Williams
Medication Beliefs And Behaviors Of Hypertensive Caribbean Immigrants Living In New York City, Nadia Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hypertension remains a worldwide health phenomenon with serious health consequences including heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, and heart failure. Beliefs about medicines have been shown to influence hypertension outcomes. Medication adherence has emerged as a vital component of hypertension control and management. However, there has been limited research which addresses beliefs about medicines and medication adherence in Blacks of Caribbean origin. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to identify the beliefs about medications held among hypertensive Caribbean immigrants living in New York City using the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire to identify what factors/barriers were related to these specific medication …
Sentencing Length Disparity Across Gender And Race For Drug Offenses, Alexis Griggs
Sentencing Length Disparity Across Gender And Race For Drug Offenses, Alexis Griggs
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research on sentencing outcomes have concentrated on disparities between gender and race with a range of influences in legal decision making. This study was an examination of whether the same form of sentencing inconsistency is found with offenders who were convicted of drug offenses. A quantitative method (ANCOVA) was used to analyze the difference in sentencing outcomes. Data from the United States Sentencing Commission from 2016 fiscal year were used to investigate the role of gender and race in sentencing disparity and examine whether an offender’s prior sentencing history and drug amount influences sentencing outcomes. The results of this study …
Demographics And 30-Day Readmissions For End-Stage Renal Disease Patients, Shelia Concepcion Perez
Demographics And 30-Day Readmissions For End-Stage Renal Disease Patients, Shelia Concepcion Perez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is increasingly a problem in the United States, and factors such as race/ethnicity and gender may not only worsen the risk of the disease but also correspond to worse treatment access. This is significant because ESRD is a heavy economic burden not only on patients, but on caregivers and the health care system, especially as disparities remain between different demographic groups. The purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental, historical, correlational design was to determine the extent to which gender and race/ethnicity predict 30-day readmission rates after hospitalization for ESRD patients. The theoretical framework for the current study …

Coumadin (R/S-warfarin) anticoagulant therapy is highly efficacious in preventing the formation of blood clots; however, significant inter-individual variations in response risks over or under dosing resulting in adverse bleeding events or ineffective therapy, respectively. Levels of pharmacologically active forms of the drug and metabolites depend on a diversity of metabolic pathways. Cytochromes P450 play a major role in oxidizing R- and S-warfarin to 6-, 7-, 8-, 10-, and 4'-hydroxywarfarin, and warfarin alcohols form through a minor metabolic pathway involving reduction at the C11 position. We hypothesized that due to structural similarities with warfarin, hydroxywarfarins undergo reduction, possibly impacting their pharmacological …
Legal Internalism In Modern Histories Of Copyright, Shyamkrishna Balganesh, Taisu Zhang
Legal Internalism In Modern Histories Of Copyright, Shyamkrishna Balganesh, Taisu Zhang
Faculty Scholarship
Legal internalism refers to the internal point of view that professional participants in a legal practice develop toward it. It represents a behavioral phenomenon wherein such participants treat the domain of law (or a subset of it) as normative, epistemologically self-contained, and logically coherent on its own terms regardless of whether the law actually embodies those characteristics. Thus understood, legal internalism remains an important characteristic of all modern legal systems. In this Review, we examine three recent interdisciplinary histories of copyright law to showcase the working of legal internalism. We argue that while their interdisciplinary emphasis adds to the conversation …

A History Of New Deal Archaeology In Alabama: Labor And Science In Economic Reform, Caleb Ross Butz
All ETDs from UAB
This thesis is a history of New Deal archaeology within the state of Alabama. It was designed to facilitate research with New Deal-era collections by providing a comprehensive contextual background. This thesis explores the relationship between the Works Progress Administration (WPA) laborers and the archaeological institutions of the period within the context of the Great Depression and the social democratic reforms of the New Deal. Labor, labor-time, and logistical information were gathered from the WPA Quarterly Progress Reports prepared by David L. DeJarnette from 1936 to 1942. An inventory of over 130 archaeological sites was compiled based on field reports …
Surficial Geology Of The Continental Shelf Off New Hampshire: Morphologic Features And Surficial Sediment, Larry G. Ward, Zachary S. Mcavoy, Maxlimer Coromoto Vallee-Anziani, Rachel C. Morrison
Surficial Geology Of The Continental Shelf Off New Hampshire: Morphologic Features And Surficial Sediment, Larry G. Ward, Zachary S. Mcavoy, Maxlimer Coromoto Vallee-Anziani, Rachel C. Morrison
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The continental shelf off New Hampshire (NH) in the Western Gulf of Maine (WGOM) is extremely complex and includes extensive bedrock outcrops, marine-modified glacial deposits, marine-formed shoals, seafloor plains, and associated features that are composed of a range of sediment types from mud to gravel. Furthermore, the physiography and composition of the seafloor frequently changes dramatically over relatively short distances (tens of meters). The complexity of the WGOM seafloor results from the interplay of glaciations, sea-level fluctuations, and marine processes (waves and currents). High-resolution multibeam echosounder (MBES) bathymetry and backscatter surveys, along with ground truth consisting of archived seismic reflection …

Exploring Standardized Persons' Expectations For Practice-Readiness Among Student Pharmacists, Channing R. Ford, Kevin N. Astle, Kimberly B. Garza, Erika L. Kleppinger
Research, Publications & Creative Work
Although patient expectations and preferences for healthcare selection have been described in the literature, there are no studies exploring what qualities and behaviors standardized persons (SPs) identify for the practice-ready pharmacist. This manuscript explores those qualities and behaviors within an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) to determine SP interest in having the student as their pharmacy provider. Methods: Using open-ended questions via a Qualtrics survey, SPs were asked to provide qualities and behaviors they associated with each of three practice-readiness rating levels. Using a constant comparative approach, the researchers coded the collected data over multiple stages to allow for authentic …
Whose Line Is It Anyway? Rhetoric, Pathology, And The Jewish Race In Late Victorian England, Stephanie G. Pokras
Whose Line Is It Anyway? Rhetoric, Pathology, And The Jewish Race In Late Victorian England, Stephanie G. Pokras
Senior Independent Study Theses
This thesis examines how both late Victorian Anglo-Jews and Gentiles used rhetoric of race science and Jewish pathology to encode lines of difference, as well as the relationship between these discourses. My first chapter analyzes the role of Gentile discourse of disease and disability as the foundation of late Victorian anti-Semitism. My second chapter focuses on Jewish ‘expert’ engagement with race science. In this chapter, I argue that contrary to the dominant historical narrative, not only was the Jewish community engaged with race science, but their scholarly conversations were dynamic and diverse. Ideas about race and pathology became central to …

The Criminalization Of Foreign Relations, Steven Arrigg Koh
The Criminalization Of Foreign Relations, Steven Arrigg Koh
Faculty Scholarship
Overcriminalization has rightly generated national condemnation among policymakers, scholars, and practitioners alike. And yet, such scholarship often assumes that the encroachment of criminal justice stops at our borders. This Article argues that our foreign relations are also at risk of overcriminalization due to overzealous prosecution, overreaching legislation, and presidential politicization—and that this may be particularly problematic when U.S. criminal justice supplants certain nonpenal U.S. foreign policies abroad. This Article proposes three key reforms— presidential distancing, prosecutorial integration, and legislative de-escalation—to assure a principled place for criminal justice in foreign relations.
On Bankruptcy’S Promethean Gap: Building Enslaving Capacity Into The Antebellum Administrative State, Rafael I. Pardo
On Bankruptcy’S Promethean Gap: Building Enslaving Capacity Into The Antebellum Administrative State, Rafael I. Pardo
Scholarship@WashULaw
As the United States contends with the economic crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, federal bankruptcy law is one tool that can be used to resolve the financial distress suffered by individuals and businesses. When implementing this remedy, the question arises whether the law’s application should be viewed as limited to addressing private debt matters, without regard for the public interest. This Article answers the question by looking to modern U.S. bankruptcy law’s first forebear, the 1841 Bankruptcy Act, which Congress enacted in response to the depressed economic conditions following the Panic of 1837. That legislation created a judicially administered …
Recontextualisation And The Teaching Of Subjects, Jim Hordern
Recontextualisation And The Teaching Of Subjects, Jim Hordern
Plymouth Institute of Education
AbstractThis paper interrogates the concept of recontextualisation and discusses its relevance for understandings of the knowledge required for teaching subjects. While various distinctive approaches to recontextualisation can be identified, this analysis primarily draws on the work of Bernstein, with recontextualisation discussed in the broader context of work on the sociology of educational knowledge. It is argued that Bernstein's approach to recontextualisation can be usefully extended by absorbing insights derived from recent work conceptualising expertise and practice, through a reconsideration of disciplinarity, and by reflecting on historical studies of the transformation of specialised practical knowledge. It is suggested that recontextualisation can …

Toward A Ubiquitous Learning Media: Encouraging Understanding By Virtual Reality-Based Learning, Idris Idris, Agus Purnomo, Bayu Kurniawan
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The use of mainstream media is no longer attractive to students. They enjoy more and are more enthusiastic about virtual learning which provides the greatest possible opportunity for direct contact or as if to experience directly the object of the material being studied. This study aimed to develop an Android-based application with virtual reality (VR) in the material kingdom and Hindu-Buddhist heritage (SijarVi-information system of virtual reality-based learning). This product was intended to provide anti-mainstream learning media, which provides opportunities for students to be directly involved and see directly the object being studied. This development used research and development method …

The Need For Aerospace Structural Health Monitoring: A Review Of Aircraft Fatigue Accidents, Luke Pollock, Ayah Khalid Abdelwahab, John Murray, Graham Wild
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Aircraft accidents involving catastrophic fatigue failure have the potential for significant loss of life. The aim of this research was to investigate trends in aircraft fatigue failure accidents to inform aerospace Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system Research and Development (R&D). The research involved collecting 139 aircraft fatigue failure accident reports from the Aviation Safety Network database, which were coded using a directed content analysis. The trends and features of the categorical data were then explored using an ex-post facto study. The results showed that fatigue failure accidents have increased at a rate of (3.4 ± 0.6)×10-2 per year since the …
Navigating The Wreck: Writing Women’S Experience Of The Japanese Occupation Of Singapore. Salvaged From The Wreck: A Novel -And- Diving Into The Wreck: A Critical Essay, Dawn Nora Crabb
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis is in two parts. The first and major part consists of a historical novel followed, in part two, by an essay. The title of this thesis, “Navigating the Wreck”, refers metaphorically to the Fall of Singapore in 1942, the ensuing human tragedy unleashed on the people of Singapore and Malaya, and the literary and historical processes of exploring, interpreting and depicting the past. The Japanese occupation of Singapore has, to date, been described mostly by Western historians and former prisoners of war who have forged a predominant patriarchal narrative. In that narrative—despite the all-encompassing nature of the occupation …

The Ethics Of Aerial Bombardment In International Conflicts: From Douhet To Drones, Rauan Zhaksybergen
The Ethics Of Aerial Bombardment In International Conflicts: From Douhet To Drones, Rauan Zhaksybergen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this thesis, I demonstrate how the question of ethics in aerial bombardment has been evolving and transforming since its inception at the beginning of the twentieth century to contemporary targeted killings/assassinations by drones. I interact with early airpower theories from Douhet, Trenchard, Mitchell, and contemporary air tactics in order to establish a crucial sequence between these early theories and practices of aerial violence and modern ones conducted by armed drones. I show how the evolution of aerial bombardment challenged, influenced, and transformed essentials of conventional warfare, as well as dispersed boundaries between combatants and non-combatants. Contemporary legally uncontrolled targeted …
Rabbi Lamm, The Fifth Amendment, And Comparative Jewish Law, Samuel J. Levine
Rabbi Lamm, The Fifth Amendment, And Comparative Jewish Law, Samuel J. Levine
Scholarly Works
Rabbi Norman Lamm’s 1956 article, “The Fifth Amendment and Its Equivalent in the Halakha,” provides important lessons for scholarship in both Jewish and American law. Sixty-five years after it was published, the article remains, in many ways, a model for interdisciplinary and comparative study of Jewish law, drawing upon sources in the Jewish legal tradition, American legal history, and modern psychology. In so doing, the article proves faithful to each discipline on its own terms, producing insights that illuminate all three disciplines while respecting the internal logic within each one. In addition to many other distinctions, since its initial publication, …
Mau Mau’S Moral War: The Sacralization Of Kenya’S Anticolonial Struggle, 1952–1956, Henry Muoki Mbunga
Mau Mau’S Moral War: The Sacralization Of Kenya’S Anticolonial Struggle, 1952–1956, Henry Muoki Mbunga
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation is a study of the ethical and religious history of the Mau Mau War in Kenya, 1952–1956. It breaks with a historiographical tradition that reduces Mau Mau’s ritual activities to stage props and backdrops on the historical stage. The project investigates two central questions: (1) why did Mau Mau members invent a variety of rituals during the anticolonial struggle in Kenya? and (2) how did the ethical and religious convictions of Mau Mau members shape their military campaign? Using rare archival sources and the oral histories and published memoirs of Mau Mau War veterans, this study argues that …

Advancing The Spatial Turn In History Through Deep Mapping: Ghost Maps, Neogeography, And Frederick Jackson Turner, Jessica L. Mathai
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The permeation of the spatial turn into the humanities, and in particular history, has both imbued scholarship and opened up new areas for research. This dissertation examines the conceptual and theoretical implications of advancing the spatial turn in history and evaluating existing approaches such as Historical GIS and ghost mapping as a foundation for deep mapping. The resulting deep map developed in this study utilizes Neogeography and web technology in the form of JavaScript Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to develop a prototype that overcomes many of the limitations that occur when simultaneously integrating multiple sources of data and software functionality, …
Determinants Of Housing Supply Expansion In The Western United States, Nathaniel Tolles
Determinants Of Housing Supply Expansion In The Western United States, Nathaniel Tolles
CMC Senior Theses
New residential construction is an important indicator of economic health. Previous empirical work demonstrates the profound power of housing starts in forecasting recession. Theoretical research, backed by empirical study, suggests that home prices and interest rates are closely related to the amount of residential investment. This paper attempts to better understand the complex relationship between various factors that influence the supply and demand of new housing; what information do suppliers and regulators use to determine how many new units of housing will be constructed? Specifically, we will look at the respective state housing markets of California, Oregon, and Washington by …
