How Bavinck Responds To The Challenges Of The Theory Of Evolution: The Primacy Of Biblical Revelation, Isaias D'Oleo Ochoa Jan 2021

How Bavinck Responds To The Challenges Of The Theory Of Evolution: The Primacy Of Biblical Revelation, Isaias D'Oleo Ochoa

CTS Student Publications and Creative Works

In his discussion of evolution, Bavinck offers a modified theory of development, rooted not under a mechanistic and naturalistic worldview, as Darwin does, but under a “theistic-friendly” framework. This article argues that Bavinck’s discussion of evolution as a whole endorses a modified Aristotelian/ Thomistic framework in order to understand the theory of development, and thus overcomes the challenges raised by Darwin’s naturalistic worldview to biblical revelation.

This Article focuses on uncovering the multiple meanings of the word "our" in the published opinions of the U.S. Supreme Court from Chisholm to modern times. To do so, we use a digital legal history approach, combining robust court data, text mining techniques, and expert word classification, using a set of custom open-source tools and open data.

Refugee Health, Healthcare, And Resettlement In New Haven, Connecticut: A Historical Study With Contemporary Implications, Ezra Lichtman Jan 2021

Refugee Health, Healthcare, And Resettlement In New Haven, Connecticut: A Historical Study With Contemporary Implications, Ezra Lichtman

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Nationally, there is no single clinic model for the provision of healthcare to refugees, and the field of refugee health is perpetually in flux. However, in the New Haven area, there is a well-established system of resettlement, health screening, and healthcare integration for newly arrived refugees. A local agency secures housing, provides education and social opportunities, and coordinates medical visits. And Yale-New Haven Hospital holds adult and pediatric screening clinics for refugees. The origins of this local system lie in the late 1970s and 1980s, when Soviet Jewish and Southeast Asian refugees began to relocate to New Haven in large …

The Great Southern Buy-Back: The Colony Of Western Australia And The Great Southern Railway 1880-1897, Thomas Goode Jan 2021

The Great Southern Buy-Back: The Colony Of Western Australia And The Great Southern Railway 1880-1897, Thomas Goode

Theses

This thesis examines the circumstances surrounding the building of the Great Southern Railway as a land-grant railway in the colony of Western Australia in the 1880s and its purchase by the government in 1896. In the early 1880s the steamship companies bringing mail and passengers from overseas and the eastern colonies, preferred Albany to Fremantle, adding an uncomfortable three to four day journey to the capital Perth. To overcome this difficulty, the government proposed to build a railway from Albany to the existing network at Beverley. This railway was to be funded by grants of land to the private company …

The History Of Congressional Apportionment, Charles M. Biles Jan 2021

The History Of Congressional Apportionment, Charles M. Biles

Trade & Scholarly Monographs

NEW REVISED SECOND EDITION.

The Congressional apportionment problem is deceptively easy to state: How many seats in the U. S. House of Representatives does each state get? To answer that question, Charles Biles, award-winning Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Humboldt State University, examines the math and politics that has shaped government and power from the founding of the country to the modern day.

Employing an interdisciplinary approach that stems from his research in mathematical modeling and the modeling of natural resource systems, Biles tells a flowing evolutionary tale of how slight changes in calculating apportionment has wrought massive shifts in …

A total of 638 adults from the US participated in this study via Amazon ® Mechanical Turk ®. A multiple regression analysis …

Blurring The Boundary Between Play And Ritual: Sugoroku Boards As Portable Cosmos In Japanese Religion, Jingyi Yuan Jan 2021

Blurring The Boundary Between Play And Ritual: Sugoroku Boards As Portable Cosmos In Japanese Religion, Jingyi Yuan

Honors Papers

This thesis examines two Japanese board games, both called sugoroku 双六, from a religious studies perspective. Although bearing the same name, ban-sugoroku 盤双六 and e-sugoroku 絵双六 have long been studied separately because of their different origins, eras, layouts and rules. However, an examination of visual and textual evidence such as illustrated handscrolls and encyclopedic sources demonstrates that the two games are strikingly similar: both games carry cosmological meanings, and their religious functions are closely tied to the process of playing. I propose that the inextricable nature of ritual and play exhibited in both games enabled them to serve for laypersons …

Emotion Dysregulation In Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Following Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms, Alexa Raudales Jan 2021

Emotion Dysregulation In Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Following Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms, Alexa Raudales

Open Access Master's Theses

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a serious public health concern that can be understood within an emotion dysregulation framework. The current study adds to the literature by utilizing a micro-longitudinal study design and advanced statistical modeling to test the bidirectional associations between emotion dysregulation and NSSI, as well as the moderating effect of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). Participants were 131 sexual assault survivors with a history of NSSI (Mage = 35.54; 65.6% female; 81.7% white) recruited from the community who self-reported on symptoms of negative and positive emotion dysregulation, NSSI, and PTSS. Findings provided valuable information on the nuanced relation …

Speaking Music: A Historical Study Of Edwin Gordon's Music Learning Theory, David M. Alfred Jan 2021

Speaking Music: A Historical Study Of Edwin Gordon's Music Learning Theory, David M. Alfred

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Music Learning Theory, conceived, researched, and developed by Dr. Edwin Elias Gordan, has been on the periphery of music education for decades and is the only extant comprehensive theoretical framework that fully addresses the development of music literacy from early childhood through maturity. The concurrent research gap suggests that a Fordist approach may exist throughout music education – one that insists upon behavioral goals, direct instruction, and educational, artistic, and ideological exclusivity. This historical study elucidates Gordan’s work in order to understand the stages and processes that are like spokes of a wheel between his idea of audiation at the …

Power And Control: An Exploration Of Health And Medicine At Camp Lawton (9js1), Emily L. Jones Jan 2021

Power And Control: An Exploration Of Health And Medicine At Camp Lawton (9js1), Emily L. Jones

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In late 1864, as the American Civil War was entering its final stages, the Confederacy built a prison to ease the overcrowding at the infamous Andersonville prison. This prison, located in Millen, Georgia, would be known as Camp Lawton. Camp Lawton was abandoned in November of 1864 but has recently been the site of ongoing archaeological investigation. Despite this, little research has been done focusing specifically on health and medicine at Camp Lawton. In this thesis, I use qualitative analysis of Civil War prisoner and guard accounts and analysis of artifacts from Camp Lawton to understand the nature of access …

Passing The Baton: An Integrated Approach To Succession Planning For Local Health Departments, Isabella M. Hardwick Jan 2021

Passing The Baton: An Integrated Approach To Succession Planning For Local Health Departments, Isabella M. Hardwick

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Succession planning is a process that requires more than just an organizational chart illustration of who holds what position within the organization. The process also requires developing and implementing guidelines and best practices to identify and address current and future workforce development needs. Succession planning contributes to an organization’s success by providing a mechanism that ensures a talent pool of replacements has been suitably groomed and equipped to fill critical vacancies when retirements occur or on short notice. It can generate operational efficiencies for the field of public health that is faced with chronic budgetary pressure and an impending mass …

Destalinization And Its Impact On Gulag Returnees In The Khrushchev Era, 1953-1964, Kendal Ridgeway Jan 2021

Destalinization And Its Impact On Gulag Returnees In The Khrushchev Era, 1953-1964, Kendal Ridgeway

All Master's Theses

With the death of Stalin and the immediate return of millions of Gulag survivors into Soviet society, Khrushchev’s government was confronted with the problem of maintaining the legitimacy of the communist system while at the same time addressing the legacy of mass repression in the Stalin years. Beginning briefly with the consolidation of the Gulag system in 1926, this work ties together narratives of official policy makers, Gulag returnees themselves, and contemporary Soviet historians to examine Gulag reform in the Khrushchev era in a wholistic manner. Using primary and secondary source material, this study analyzes policies of destalinization with specific …

Factors Leading To Organizational Success Despite Low Trust In Leadership, Myriam Elizabeth Seay Jan 2021

Factors Leading To Organizational Success Despite Low Trust In Leadership, Myriam Elizabeth Seay

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Generally, research results have suggested that employees’ lack of trust in leadership typically results in poor performance. The purpose of this research was to explore the factors that contributed to the federal government’s organizational success despite organization employees’ low interpersonal trust/distrust in the agency’s leadership. This change in the theory of trust was identified as a gap in literature; the change in the traditional knowledge of trust merits this specific problem to be explored and analyzed for further understanding. The conceptual framework was composed of trust, distrust, and employee-leader interpersonal trust/distrust theory. A qualitative exploratory case study was used along …

Confronting Colonial Violence: Pueblo Women Using Indigenous History For Community Activism And Healing, Sierra Mondragón , '21

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

Combining a critical dive into the archives of Indigenous history, a survey of Indigenous historiography, and recorded interviews with Pueblo women-led organizations Tewa Women United and Three Sisters Collective, this research focuses on how contemporary Pueblo Indigenous women use Indigenous models of history to confront ongoing forms of colonial violence. The programming and activist efforts of both organizations are highlighted for their ability to confront historical issues of sexual and physical violence, family disruption and trauma, and forced sterilization. The connections made between Indigenous history and the narratives of TWU and 3SC reveal successful models for how Indigenous history can …

Debating Diya: Indirect Rule And The Transformation Of Islamic Law In British Colonial Northern Nigeria, Rabiat Akande Jan 2021

Debating Diya: Indirect Rule And The Transformation Of Islamic Law In British Colonial Northern Nigeria, Rabiat Akande

All Papers

Leading academic authority on British imperial governance, Dame Margery Perham famously made the above remark on the workings of indirect rule in Northern Nigeria—the colonial state resulting from the 1903 British conquest of the West African Sokoto Caliphate. First emerging on the heels of the 1857 mutiny in British India, British colonial indirect rule had a long and checkered history predating its arrival in Nigeria. The dominant understanding of the Indian rebellion was that of a revolt against empire’s anglicizing project with the consequence that it spurred the colonial state to turn to governing colonial populations through native institutions within …

The Necessity Of Imagination: Using The Counterfactual Method To Overcome International Law's Epistemological Limitations, Mohsen Al Attar Jan 2021

The Necessity Of Imagination: Using The Counterfactual Method To Overcome International Law's Epistemological Limitations, Mohsen Al Attar

National Law School of India Review

As a social phenomenon, law is subject to countless influences that shape its contours. This quality is compounded in international law, where the regime contends with the contexts, cultures, and complexities of disparate nation-states. Yet, despite international law’s evident contingency, few publicists explore the implications of this quality, preferring to engage with the regime from within the dominant history and logic. This approach narrows both scholarly imagination and regulatory potential, confining us to a contingent status quo. In the following article, I argue for the use of counterfactuals in international legal scholarship to, first, enrich our understanding of the biases …

Midwifery And Medicine In Britain: A Comparative View Of Midwifery And Childbearing In Scotland And England, 1650-1780, Summer Smith Jan 2021

Midwifery And Medicine In Britain: A Comparative View Of Midwifery And Childbearing In Scotland And England, 1650-1780, Summer Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation I contend the female midwives and childbearing women did not passively accept the alteration of the experience of birth and the ideology surrounding it in eighteenth-century Britain. While the imposition of the man-midwife and the reframing of birth as a disease to be cured in some ways forced childbearing to shift to a medicalized event, many practices persisted from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries, illustrating a vein of consistency in a seemingly tumultuous period. Furthermore, the changes that did take root were not solely the purview of the male medical community, but were influenced by women …

The Removal Of Sin In Second Temple Jewish Literature, Odiaka Walker Jan 2021

The Removal Of Sin In Second Temple Jewish Literature, Odiaka Walker

Master's Theses

Problem

This thesis explored the Second Temple literary background of the concept that Jesus appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin, in Heb 9:26. As such, the research question which guided the paper was: what did Old Testament and Intertestamental writers believe about the removal of sin at the end of the ages? The answer to this question infers other questions: who would remove sin? From where would sin be removed? How was sin defined? How would sin be removed? When would sin be removed (are there time specifications involved)?

Method

The terms ἀφαιρέω, ἀφίημι, ἀπαλείφω, …

Dietary Flexibility Of Wood Storks In Response To Human-Induced Rapid Environmental Change, Betsy A. Evans, Jessica A. Klassen, Dale E. Gawlik Jan 2021

Dietary Flexibility Of Wood Storks In Response To Human-Induced Rapid Environmental Change, Betsy A. Evans, Jessica A. Klassen, Dale E. Gawlik

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Human-induced rapid environmental change (HIREC) has altered landscape processes and negatively impacted many species globally. Some of the most dramatic changes have been in wetlands where flows have been disrupted, and new wetlands have been created to retain runoff. In response to disrupted natural wetland conditions, Wood Stork (Mycteria americana) populations in South Florida have significantly declined over the past several decades. Despite the well-documented sensitivity of Wood Storks to natural wetland conditions, Wood Storks are often observed foraging in roadside created wetlands; however, the availability of prey in created wetlands is currently unknown. We sampled natural and created wetlands …

Ethnic Conflict In Côte D’Ivoire, Ayouba Doumbia Jan 2021

Ethnic Conflict In Côte D’Ivoire, Ayouba Doumbia

Dissertations and Theses

Since the early days of independence, the African continent has been the theatre of many ethnic conflicts. While people, in general, assume these conflicts to be political and blame the conflicts on authoritarian regimes, they dismissed the fact that conflict between ethnicities is a phenomenon that has occurred for hundreds of years and in all corners of the Earth. Entire countries have been devastated by years of ethnic strife. Once ethnic conflict breaks out, it is difficult to stop. Conflicts in the Balkans, Rwanda, Chechnya, Iraq, and Darfur are among the deadliest examples from the late 20th and early …

'Fraught' Chineseness: 'Chinese Christians' In The Vancouver Sun, Justin Kh Tse Jan 2021

'Fraught' Chineseness: 'Chinese Christians' In The Vancouver Sun, Justin Kh Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This chapter explores the ways in which Douglas Todd, a journalist for the Vancouver Sun, has covered stories about Chinese churches in Vancouver, BC, for over three decades. It shows how Todd has focused on Chinese Christians as a way to offer a particular perspective on religion and cultural diversity in Vancouver, and as a window into their relationship with the civil society. Ultimately, this chapter highlights the ways in which Todd essentializes “Chineseness” and reinforces a problematic public narrative of homogeneity among Vancouver’s Chinese Christians.

Estimating A Range Of Flow Rates Resulting From Extreme Storm Events Within The Wekiva River Watershed Through Statistical Testing And Modeling, Wesley K. Koning Jan 2021

Estimating A Range Of Flow Rates Resulting From Extreme Storm Events Within The Wekiva River Watershed Through Statistical Testing And Modeling, Wesley K. Koning

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The middle portion of the St. Johns River is located in East-Central Florida, USA. This region of the St. Johns River is increasingly subject to urbanization and conversion of forest areas to agricultural land. Overall, these changes mean that future flood events in the area could adversely impact local citizens. Therefore, the examination of extreme flood events and resiliency to such events is critical. The purpose of this preliminary study is to explore a range of practical applications to estimate extreme flood flows at watercourses within the Middle St. Johns River Basin, focusing specifically upon the Wekiva River sub-basin. The …

Policy Considerations Regarding Student Loan Debt And Higher Education, Todd R. Niemczyk Esq. Jan 2021

Policy Considerations Regarding Student Loan Debt And Higher Education, Todd R. Niemczyk Esq.

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Within the last 30 years, the policy considerations regarding student loan debt and higher education have become a series of strong opinions, heated debate, and partisan politics. Key stakeholders including the United States Government, both for-profit and traditional higher- educations institutions, financial organizations, special interest groups, and students all have interests. More so, all branches of Government, the Legislative, Judicial, and Executive, are areas where policy is both born and challenged. Some are aligned, and some are competing such that crafting sound policy regarding the lending and management of student loan debt has created a difficult situation that may well …

Guest Editorial: Disaster, State And Science: Historical Narratives Of Extreme Weather In East Asia And The Pacific, Fiona Williamson Jan 2021

Guest Editorial: Disaster, State And Science: Historical Narratives Of Extreme Weather In East Asia And The Pacific, Fiona Williamson

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This curated special issue asks how history can be used as a lens into disaster and disaster management. It takes as its premise the idea that approaches from different disciplines - including the humanities and social sciences – can offer new perspectives on understanding disaster, managing disaster and disaster risk. The concept is not new, historically focussed studies have long provided meat for hazard investigations and modelling, especially those focused on geological or hydrological time-series analyses; multi-hazard interactions and identifying historical underliers for contemporary risk. It has become increasingly common, for example, to include historians in collaborative efforts to better …

Heidegger: The Forgottenness Of Beyng, Emile Alexandrov Jan 2021

Heidegger: The Forgottenness Of Beyng, Emile Alexandrov

Theses

Martin Heidegger’s Contributions to Philosophy (Of the Event) is the first of a series of seven works centred on his concept of the Event (Ereiginis). It is also considered to be his second major work after Being and Time. Written in a form often cited as not fit for publication, it nevertheless exhibits the blueprint for Heidegger’s famous Turn (Kehre). The emphasis of this historical study lies in recognising the contemporaneous manifestation of the “Abandonment by beyng” in its destructive capacity. The nihilistic individual is at the core of this Abandonment, which showcases Heidegger’s description of the individual during the …

The Van Diemen's Land Commission 1826 To 1828 And The Doctrine Of Ultra Vires, Rosemary Conchita Lucadou-Wells Jan 2021

The Van Diemen's Land Commission 1826 To 1828 And The Doctrine Of Ultra Vires, Rosemary Conchita Lucadou-Wells

Theses

This Thesis examines the work of the Land Commissioners of Van Diemen’s Land during the years 1826 - 1828, in light of the doctrine of ultra vires and the underlying principle of the Rule of Law. Ultra vires occurs when those invested with power act beyond the parameters of their given powers, which can result in their actions being rendered unlawful. Ultra vires is a fundamental doctrine in law today. It has evolved over a long period of time and was received into the Australian legal system with colonisation. However, the historical origins, development and application of the ultra vires …

Responses Of Polylepis Birds To Patch And Landscape Attributes In The High Andes, C. Steven Sevillano-Ríos, Amanda D. Rodewald Jan 2021

Responses Of Polylepis Birds To Patch And Landscape Attributes In The High Andes, C. Steven Sevillano-Ríos, Amanda D. Rodewald

Neotropical Biodiversity

Habitat loss and fragmentation can devastate biodiversity, especially at regional and global scales. However, generalizing to individual species is challenging given the wide variety of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that shape species-specific responses – particularly among species that are specialists, generalists, or adapted to naturally patchy landscapes. In this study, we examined how patch and landscape attributes affected bird communities within Polylepis forest ecosystems, which are patchily distributed within landscapes of Puna grasslands and shrublands in the High Andes of Peru (3,300–4,700 m). We surveyed birds in 59 Polylepis patches and 47 sites in the Puna matrix, resulting in 13,210 …

Observations On Camposella Insignata (Diptera: Acroceridae) From The Tropical Andes Of Ecuador, Akihito G. Tadashima-Rivera, Diego F. Cisneros-Heredia, Sebastián A. Ramos-Rojas, Giovanni M. Ramón-Cabrera Jan 2021

Observations On Camposella Insignata (Diptera: Acroceridae) From The Tropical Andes Of Ecuador, Akihito G. Tadashima-Rivera, Diego F. Cisneros-Heredia, Sebastián A. Ramos-Rojas, Giovanni M. Ramón-Cabrera

Neotropical Biodiversity

In the Neotropics, Panopinae spider flies are the most diverse within Acroceridae, specializing as endoparasites of mygalomorph spiders. Camposella insignata Cole, 1919 is one of the most enigmatic flies within this subfamily, given its conspicuously enlarged antennal flagella and apparent rarity, with only two specimens known to this day. This paper describes recently collected C. insignata specimens from the Ecuadorian Andes and provides pictures and measurements. We also discuss the possible function of the enlarged antennal flagella and give recommendations on future collection efforts to increase knowledge about this enigmatic genus.
