Cantilever-Based Sensor Utilizing A Diffractive Optical Element With High Sensitivity To Relative Humidity, Catherine M. Grogan, Faolan Radford Mcgovern, Rory Staines, George Amarandei, Izabela Naydenova Jan 2021

Cantilever-Based Sensor Utilizing A Diffractive Optical Element With High Sensitivity To Relative Humidity, Catherine M. Grogan, Faolan Radford Mcgovern, Rory Staines, George Amarandei, Izabela Naydenova

Articles

High-sensitivity and simple, low-cost readout are desirable features for sensors independent of the application area. Micro-cantilever sensors use the deflection induced by the analyte presence to achieve high-sensitivity but possess complex electronic readouts. Current holographic sensors probe the analyte presence by measuring changes in their optical properties, have a simpler low-cost readout, but their sensitivity can be further improved. Here, the two working principles were combined to obtain a new hybrid sensor with enhanced sensitivity. The diffractive element, a holographically patterned thin photopolymer layer, was placed on a polymer (polydimethylsiloxane) layer forming a bi-layer macro-cantilever. The different responses of the …

Raman spectroscopy is promising in vivo tool in various biomedical applications; moreover, in recent years, its use for characterizing articular cartilage degeneration has been developing. It has also shown potential for scoring the severity of cartilage lesions, which could be useful in determining the optimal treatment strategy during cartilage repair surgery. However, the effect of different cartilage injury types on Raman spectra is unknown. This study aims to investigate the potential of Raman spectroscopy for detecting changes in cartilage due to different injury types. Artificial injuries were induced in cartilage samples using established mechanical and enzymatic approaches to mimic trauma-induced …

Student Works (2020-2029)

The selection and intake criteria for the paediatric training surgery training program (Master of Paediatric Surgery) has undergone changes. Changes were instituted to ensure a more robust selection system to ensure that the best candidates were selected into the program. However, there has not been any data to show that these changes have resulted in selection of candidates that could graduate on time and possess the attributes that predicted the development of competencies required. The aim of this study aim was to explore the perspectives of senior paediatric surgeons on the Master of Paediatric Surgery selection and intake process. The …

Perception Of Undergraduate Medical Students On Integration Of Radiological Anatomy For Pre-Clinical Teaching, Reshma Mohamed Ansari Jan 2021

Perception Of Undergraduate Medical Students On Integration Of Radiological Anatomy For Pre-Clinical Teaching, Reshma Mohamed Ansari

Student Works (2020-2029)

Integration is the way forward to enable accommodation of the ever-expanding content in medical education. While revising the curriculum, stakeholders’ perception aids to tailor a curriculum matching their needs. Radiological anatomy (RA) is an integrated discipline of topographical, cross-sectional anatomy with radiological representation of structural anatomy. Though RA has been widely incorporated in most of the medical curricula, there is a dearth of standardization in terms of student learning time (SLT), content and teachers. This study was planned to record the perception of MBBS students on RA teaching in pre-clinical years in University of Cyberjaya, Malaysia. A modified, piloted and …

Investigating The Development Of Perceptions And Behavioural Intentions Towards People Living With Hiv (Plhiv) Among Pre-Clinical Medical Students In The University Of Malaya, Calvin Christopher Willims Fernandez Jan 2021

Investigating The Development Of Perceptions And Behavioural Intentions Towards People Living With Hiv (Plhiv) Among Pre-Clinical Medical Students In The University Of Malaya, Calvin Christopher Willims Fernandez

Student Works (2020-2029)

Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, there has been a high prevalence of stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV (PLHIV). They manifest in people’s attitudes and behaviour, and in various contexts including education, employment and healthcare. For the latter specifically, stigma-driven behaviours by healthcare practitioners have resulted in poorer health outcomes for PLHIV, where they are humiliated, isolated and in some cases, even refused treatment. This subsequently leads to an increase in mental health issues and other damaging health behaviours among PLHIV. Numerous studies have explored the manifestation of these stigmatizing attitudes and behaviours …

The Global Benefits Of The Law & Economics Framework In Legal Education: Using Class Simulations To Support Law Student Learning (Second In Series), Patrick H. Gaughan Jan 2021

The Global Benefits Of The Law & Economics Framework In Legal Education: Using Class Simulations To Support Law Student Learning (Second In Series), Patrick H. Gaughan

Akron Law Faculty Publications

This is the second in a series of articles proposing that the globalization of markets necessitates the integration of the Law & Economics Framework into legal education. To this end, this article proposes using classroom simulations loosely based upon Garrett Hardin’s classic article, “The Tragedy of the Commons.” As proposed, the simple and flexible core simulation can easily be altered to address various types of issues while also serving as an engaging class introduction to the Law & Economics Framework. Importantly, law faculty can easily adapt the simulation to account for local sensibilities and be used without requiring a mastery …

Jacobson 2.0: Police Power In The Time Of Covid-19, James R. Steiner-Dillon Jan 2021

Jacobson 2.0: Police Power In The Time Of Covid-19, James R. Steiner-Dillon

Akron Law Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a legal, as well as a public health, crisis. In response to the pandemic, state and municipal governments have imposed unprecedented constraints on Americans’ daily activities. These restrictions provoked a wave of constitutional challenges that have revealed the antiquated doctrinal foundations of states’ police power in the area of public health. It has been over a century since the Supreme Court, in Jacobson v. Massachusetts, articulated a broadly deferential approach to constitutional review of state orders issued in response to a public health emergency. The constitutional order has changed since Jacobson was decided; many provisions …

Rulifying Reasonable Expectations: How Katz And Originalism Can Work Together To Create A More Determinate Fourth Amendment, Michael Gentithes Jan 2021

Rulifying Reasonable Expectations: How Katz And Originalism Can Work Together To Create A More Determinate Fourth Amendment, Michael Gentithes

Akron Law Faculty Publications

For decades, commentators have decried the Supreme Court’s Fourth Amendment search jurisprudence as a hopelessly confusing jumble. Critics save their harshest barbs for the judicially created “reasonable expectations of privacy” test, suggesting that it provides little guidance and leaves search cases open to wide judicial discretion. Motivated by such critiques, several Justices have recently claimed that an originalist approach could replace the reasonable expectations test, limit judicial discretion, and clarify the Fourth Amendment’s meaning. This Article provides a comprehensive defense of the reasonable expectations test against originalist calls to abandon it. It notes two flaws in the originalist response. First, …

A Global Pandemic Remedy To Vaccine Nationalism, Emily Michiko Morris, Orit Fischman-Afori, Miriam Marcowitz-Bitton Jan 2021

A Global Pandemic Remedy To Vaccine Nationalism, Emily Michiko Morris, Orit Fischman-Afori, Miriam Marcowitz-Bitton

Akron Law Faculty Publications

Recognizing the need for flexibility in times of emergency and building upon knowledge gained from existing international and domestic compulsory licensing laws, we propose a global, centralized scheme to provide access to vaccines during pandemics. In many ways our proposal mirrors some of the World Health Organization's (WHO) COVID-19 vaccine initiatives but consolidates and expands them into a much more efficacious form. Under the proposed model, the WHO's declaration of a pandemic would trigger a global procurement and distribution scheme for vaccines. The proposed scheme would be mandatory and would require that all countries operate as one buyer vis-a-vis vaccine …

The Right To Development, Integral Human Development, And Integral Ecology In The Amazon, Diane A. Desierto, Ilaria Schnyder Von Wartensee

Journal Articles

From the Article

This article discusses the reorientation of environmental protection in Amazonia away from the paradigm of individual and collective natural resource management of regional or global commons, to the more radical thesis of Integral Ecology as the vindication of human dignity, environmental stewardship and collective responsibility - a concept deeply related to the Church's own pioneering of Integral Human Development as the 'authentic development development of every person and of the whole person'. Under the concept of integral Ecology, we argue that this expressive elaboration of the Catholic Church's core social teaching of Integral Human Development ultimately hearkens …

Fiduciary Judgment Rules, Julian Velasco Jan 2021

Fiduciary Judgment Rules, Julian Velasco

Journal Articles

Because of the strong moral rhetoric and robust equitable remedies available in fiduciary law, it is not surprising to find lawyers and legal scholars seeking to expand the reach of fiduciary law principles into new relationships and new areas of law. However, expansion often does not work very well because of the demanding and pervasive nature of fiduciary duties. Thus, jurists often turn to the business judgment rule and its policy of underenforcement of fiduciary duties as a way to fit fiduciary law principles into other areas of law. The problem with this approach is that it is based on …

Leverage, Randy J. Kozel Jan 2021

Leverage, Randy J. Kozel

Journal Articles

Sometimes government operates by inducement rather than order. Congress distributes money to the states. A state grants funds to nonprofit organizations. An administrative agency offers wages and professional opportunities to its staff. A high school provides instruction to its students. In each situation, the government furnishes something of value. And in each situation, it asks something in return-whether implementation of a government program, forbearance from activities deemed inconsistent with operational goals, conduct in pursuit of an employment mission, or compliance with standards of academic discipline. Though they arise in different contexts, these varied forms of government action present the same …

Roe And Casey Were Grievously Wrong And Should Be Overruled, Charles J. Cooper, Richard W. Garnett, Peter A. Patterson, Brian W. Barnes, John D. Ohlendorf

Journal Articles

This essay, based on an amicus curiae brief filed in the Dobbs case, explains that the Roe and Casey decisions were "grievously wrong", that no traditional stare decisis considerations weigh in favor of retaining them, and that they should be overruled.

The High Cost Of Eviction: Struggling To Contain A Growing Social Problem, Judith Fox Jan 2021

The High Cost Of Eviction: Struggling To Contain A Growing Social Problem, Judith Fox

Journal Articles

Matthew Desmond’s Pulitzer Prize winning book, focused public attention on the issue of eviction. As a result, scholars have begun to investigate and challenge some of the assumptions made in the book. Primarily, is eviction the cause of poverty or one of its consequences? This article explores several options in an attempt to explain the high number of evictions in America. These include, among others, the lack of affordable housing, failed governmental policies, the rise of institutional landlords and the role of courts. The article highlights some interventions that have begun to show progress in easing the burden of eviction. …

Moral Truth And Constitutional Conservatism, Gerard V. Bradley Jan 2021

Moral Truth And Constitutional Conservatism, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

Conservative constitutionalism is committed to "originalism," that is, to interpreting the Constitution according to its original public understanding. This defining commitment of constitutional interpretation is sound. For decades, however, constitutional conservatives have diluted it with a methodology of restraint, a normative approach to the judicial task marked by an overriding aversion to critical moral reasoning. In any event, the methodology eclipsed originalism and the partnership with moral truth that originalism actually entails. Conservative constitutionalism is presently a melange of mostly unsound arguments against the worst depredations of Casey's Mystery Passage.

The reason for the methodological moral reticence is easy to …

Occupational Therapy Student Perceptions Of Wellness: Focus Group Findings, Kelsey Lawrence, Katherine Chin, Stacy Smallfield Jan 2021

Occupational Therapy Student Perceptions Of Wellness: Focus Group Findings, Kelsey Lawrence, Katherine Chin, Stacy Smallfield

Journal Articles: Occupational Therapy

Despite the evidence of significant consequences stemming from the intense demands on students, most graduate-level programs have insufficiently considered components of students’ wellness. Thus, the purpose of this research study was two-pronged: 1) to evaluate current occupational therapy students’ perceptions of wellness and 2) to explore student perceptions on using communities of practice as a program delivery method to enhance wellness. A qualitative study design was selected to gather experiences and feedback from occupational therapy graduate students. Participants were recruited via email from a convenience sample of a large, research-based Midwestern occupational therapy program. Participants attended one focus group and …

Journal Articles: College of Dentistry

At this time, humankind is experiencing on a global scale a frightening infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). As of September 25, 2020, more than 32.3 million cases have been reported in 188 countries, resulting in more than 984,000 official reported deaths.[1],[2] During the course of human history, there have been several pandemics, for example, plague and smallpox. However, one of the main differences between COVID-19 and previous pandemics is the availability of computer-based technologies. Paralleling the global growth of COVID-19, studies using computer-based technologies have emerged (e.g., machine learning) to fight against …

Wayment, Nanette Lopez, Cori Lorts, Anna L. Schwartz, Karen Pugliesi, Patricia S. Pohl, Dierdra Bycura, Ricky Camplain

Journal Articles: College of Nursing, Niedfelt Nursing Research Center

As women age, they typically experience a progressive decrease in skeletal muscle mass and strength, which can lead to a decline in functional fitness and quality of life. Resistance training (RT) has the potential to attenuate these losses. Although well established for men, evidence regarding the benefits of RT for women is sparse and inconsistent: prior reviews include too few studies with women and do not adequately examine the interactive or additive impacts of workload, modalities, and nutritional supplements on outcomes such as muscle mass (MM), body composition (BC), muscle strength (MS), and functional fitness (FF). The purpose of this …

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), which express a repertoire of cargo molecules (cf. proteins, microRNA, lipids, etc.), have been garnering a prominent role in the modulation of several cellular processes. Here, using both non-human primate and rodent model systems, we provide evidence that brain-derived EV (BDE) miRNA, miR-29a-3p (mir-29a), is significantly increased during chronic methamphetamine (MA) exposure. Further, miR-29a levels show significant increase both with drug-seeking and reinstatement in a rat MA self-administration model. We also show that EV-associated miR-29a is enriched in EV pool comprising of small EVs and exomeres and further plays a critical role in MA-induced inflammation and synaptodendritic …

Metastasis continues to be the primary cause of all cancer-related deaths despite the recent advancements in cancer treatments. To evaluate the role of mutations in overall survival (OS) and treatment outcomes, we analyzed 957 metastatic patients with seven major cancer types who had available molecular testing results with a FoundationOne CDx® panel. The most prevalent genes with somatic mutations were TP53, KRAS, APC, and LRP1B. In this analysis, these genes had mutation frequencies higher than in publicly available datasets. We identified that the somatic mutations were seven mutually exclusive gene pairs and an additional fifty-two co-occurring gene pairs. Mutations …
