Development Of Tripodal And Bipodal Ligand Frameworks And First-Row Transition Metal Reagents For Selective C-N Bond Construction Methodologies, Anshika Kalra
Doctoral Dissertations
"We present a family of anionic Mn(II) reagents supported by trisphenylamido- amlne frameworks that offer guidance with regards to ligand selection for developing C—N bond construction methodologies (extensively used in the synthesis of petrochemicals, household chemicals) through nitrene- transfer chemistry. We subsequently extend the study to include the corresponding Fe(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) reagents, to gain insights in their comparative reactivity/selectivity patterns. Attenuated levels of electrophilicity of anionic complexes proved to be more suitable for discriminating aromatic from aliphatic olefins for aziridination purposes, especially for Mn(II) complexes. However, in the case of Co(II) reagents, we observe that additional stereoelectronic parameters …
Extracting Metallurgy Contaminants And Hydrocarbons Removing From Water And Industrial Wastewater Using Enhanced Emulsion Liquid Membrane With Nanoparticles And Ionic Liquid, Qusay Al-Obaidi
Doctoral Dissertations
It is an uphill battle to extract pollutants such as heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and radioactive metals from water and industrial wastewater. Emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) is an emerging technology that combines extraction/recover and stripping in one stage to extract/recover heavy metals and/or hydrocarbons from water and wastewater. ELM devised a way to clean up heavy metals and/or hydrocarbons from the water and wastewater where its primary chemicals can be recycled and reused.
In this work, the Emulsion Liquid Membrane (ELM) has been enhanced by adding nanoparticles and ionic liquid to significantly improve the recovery of the water-based contaminants of heavy …

Robustness Against Attacks And Uncertainties In Smart Cyber-Physical Systems, Prithwiraj Roy
Doctoral Dissertations
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are sensing, processing, and communicating platforms, embedded with physical devices that provide real-time monitoring and control. Security challenges in CPS necessitate solutions that are robust against attacks and uncertainties and provide a seamless operation, especially when used in real-time applications to monitor and secure critical infrastructures. CPS mainly consists of a physical component for sensing or monitoring and a cyber component for processing and communicating. The quality of interactions between physical and cyber systems has direct impacts on the system’s performance and reliability.
CPS plays a major role in smart services and applications within a smart living …
Secure Data Sharing In Cloud And Iot By Leveraging Attribute-Based Encryption And Blockchain, Md Azharul Islam
Secure Data Sharing In Cloud And Iot By Leveraging Attribute-Based Encryption And Blockchain, Md Azharul Islam
Doctoral Dissertations
“Data sharing is very important to enable different types of cloud and IoT-based services. For example, organizations migrate their data to the cloud and share it with employees and customers in order to enjoy better fault-tolerance, high-availability, and scalability offered by the cloud. Wearable devices such as smart watch share user’s activity, location, and health data (e.g., heart rate, ECG) with the service provider for smart analytic. However, data can be sensitive, and the cloud and IoT service providers cannot be fully trusted with maintaining the security, privacy, and confidentiality of the data. Hence, new schemes and protocols are required …
Synthesis Of Glycopharmaceuticals For The Treatment Of Microbial Sepsis, Nicholas Forsythe, Alexei Demchenko, Catherine Alex
Synthesis Of Glycopharmaceuticals For The Treatment Of Microbial Sepsis, Nicholas Forsythe, Alexei Demchenko, Catherine Alex
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Carbohydrates (glycans) form the basis of all living organisms and, consequently, are ubiquitous both in nature as biologically active compounds and in medicine as pharmaceuticals. One important application of carbohydrate-based drugs (glycopharmaceuticals) is the treatment of microbial sepsis, an acute illness that causes 100,000+ human deaths annually in the US alone. Exposure of the patient’s blood system to E. coli bacteria causes a massive, and often fatal, immune response. One important cellular receptor that senses the bacterium and is critically involved in triggering the immune response is CD14. Significant efforts by our team and others have been made to develop …
Restoring The Traditional Quality Of African Leadership: Perspectives From The Diaspora, Daniel Kyei-Poakwa
Restoring The Traditional Quality Of African Leadership: Perspectives From The Diaspora, Daniel Kyei-Poakwa
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
There is a widely held and mainly fair view that Africa’s contemporary leadership is deeply flawed. Reform is needed and this dissertation takes the position that the challenges to and desirable characteristics of leadership are understood and can be influenced by Africans living in the Diaspora. To explore the challenges and possible solutions, four focus groups were convened drawing on Diasporic Africans living in Rhode Island in the United States. Each group meeting was facilitated by the researcher and discussed several questions about the most needed changes in leadership in Africa today. These concerned the most desirable characteristics in political …
Holding On To Who They Are: Pathways For Variations In Response To Toxic Workplace Behavior Among U.S. Intelligence Officers, Greta Creech
Holding On To Who They Are: Pathways For Variations In Response To Toxic Workplace Behavior Among U.S. Intelligence Officers, Greta Creech
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The U.S. intelligence community is a critical mission industry responsible for protecting lives and safety in ways that impact the global security environment. Research on the deleterious impact of toxic workplace behavior on other critical mission fields, such as health care and the U.S. military, is robust. However, intelligence scholars publishing within the unclassified arena have been silent on the phenomenon, how personnel respond to it, and how it may impact the intelligence function. This lack of scholarship has afforded an opportunity to understand what constitutes toxic behavior in the intelligence environment and how it may affect U.S. national security …
Parasite And The Ideological Barriers To Emancipatory Politics, Soravis Jayanama
Parasite And The Ideological Barriers To Emancipatory Politics, Soravis Jayanama
Journal of Social Sciences
In this essay, my contention is two-fold. One, Bong Joon-ho’s f ilm Parasite (2019) is not simply about class inequality but more importantly addresses the question “what is (not) to be done?”.To appreciate this point, we have to investigate it alongside Bong’s previous f ilms, especially Snowpiercer (2013) and Okja (2017). Although these three f ilms possess vastly different storylines, they all wrestle with this burning political question from different angles: seizure of state power and revolution (Snowpiercer), “folk politics” (Okja), and neoliberal privatization of social problems (Parasite). They all implicitly demand for better or more concrete visions of systemic transformation. …

Hemoglobin disorders or inherited blood diseases affect about 5% of the world population. One main category of these disorders is sickle-cell disease (SCD). SCD can cause many physical complications, such as kidney problems, leg ulcers, and chronic pain. Less frequently discussed symptoms include complications like attention problems and emotion regulation. The study looked at a small sample of pediatric and adult patients (N=22) with SCD at a primary care clinic in a very poor community in Haiti, researching sleep and emotion regulation, given their shared neurobiological systems. As these symptoms can influence attention, the relationships among attention, emotion, and sleep …
Construction Of A Developmental Social Privilege Integration Scale, Abigail M. Martin
Construction Of A Developmental Social Privilege Integration Scale, Abigail M. Martin
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The APA’s 2017 multicultural guidelines task psychologists with the aspirational goal of understanding the nuances of historical and contemporary systems of power, privilege, and oppression. Scholars such as Helms (1984) demonstrated the critical need to readjust psychology’s focus from oppressed groups to privileged groups. In her seminal 1988 article, McIntosh insisted that in order to “redesign social systems,” privileged groups must first acknowledge their “unseen dimensions” (p. 1). Similarly, Black and Stone (2005) and Johnson (2018) asserted the lack of social privilege awareness is part of American culture, which helps to maintain the invisibility of privilege and the status quo …

The Impact Of Assertiveness And Religiosity On The Expression Of Dissent Among U.S. Immigrant Nigerian Workers, Peter Osiabia Azorji
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractScholars have studied dissent in general, but few have focused on the impact of cultural contexts and characteristics on dissent. Literature on the influence of cultural factors on expression of disagreement in organizations, by immigrant Nigerian workers in the US has not received adequate attention. There is therefore a compelling need to bridge this gap. This quantitative nonexperimental correlation study examined the impact of assertiveness and religiosity (variables that may be influenced by culture), on expression of minority dissent among Nigerian immigrant workers in the United States. The inquiry was based on two theoretical models: Bourhis et al.âs interactive acculturation …

The Need For A Strong And Stable Federal Public Health Agency Independent From Politicians, Jacqueline Salwa, Christopher Robertson
The Need For A Strong And Stable Federal Public Health Agency Independent From Politicians, Jacqueline Salwa, Christopher Robertson
Faculty Scholarship
The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the precariousness of federal public health institutions in the United States, and how disastrously things can go when those institutions are undermined by political forces. Such institutions can be disbanded, underfunded, populated with incompetent political hacks, manipulated, or sidelined. As a field, public health in particular needs some political space, given that it requires deep scientific expertise and needs to communicate to the public clearly, reliably, and with authority to engender trust. Key public health agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in particular, should be buttressed against future political encroachment, …
Evaluation Of Various Separation Techniques For The Removal Of Actinides From A Rare Earth-Containing Solution Generated From Coarse Coal Refuse, Deniz Talan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Rare earth elements have emerged as a vital commodity due to their significance in the production of high-tech devices as well as their utilization in defense and military systems. They are deemed critical due to potential scarcity, supply constraints, and the lack of minable concentrations. Therefore, alternative sources are needed to meet the demand and continue manufacturing rare earth-required products. Coal and coal by-products, in that regard, have presented a significant opportunity and proven to contain a considerable amount of rare earths. However, toxic elements such as thorium and uranium are frequently seen in the same mineralization as rare earths. …
