Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a genetically recessive autoinflammatory disease caused by mutations in the Mediterranean fever (MEFV) gene. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequencies of the most common MEFV mutations among a sample of healthy individuals from the Havsa population of European Turkey, where FMF is less prevalent compared to Asian Turkey. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 263 unrelated healthy adults. All of the participants were analyzed for the M694V, V726A, M680I, and E148Q mutations in the MEFV gene. Results: In total, 25 of the 263 individuals carried MEFV mutations (9.5%). …

Nondamaging Retinal Laser Therapy In Recurrent Diabetic Macular Edema After Antivegf Injections, Mehmet Çitirik
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Subthreshold yellow nondamaging retinal laser therapy (NRT) could provide a greater safety profile when compared to conventional laser methods. NRT may also improve diabetic macular edema (DME). This study aims to assess whether the severity of DME affects the efficacy of subthreshold yellow NRT. Materials and methods: The study included 70 eyes that had previously been treated with ranibizumab for DME and then developed recurrent macular edema, which was treated with NRT once. The central foveal thickness (CFT) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were evaluated retrospectively 2 months following the NRT. The eyes in the study were divided into …

Background/aim: Biomarkers are useful for diagnosing infection and sepsis in adults, but data are limited in elderly patients. Furthermore, clinical symptoms of infection in elderly patients are usually atypical or unclear. We aimed to assess the usefulness of PCT, CRP, and WBC in distinguishing elderly patients infected with sepsis from infected without sepsis and those with no-infection. We also aimed to find a cut-off value for diagnosing sepsis and infection without sepsis in elderly critically ill patients. Materials and methods: In this single-center and prospective observational study, patients older than 65 years were enrolled. Serum levels of PCT, CRP, and …

The Role Of Circadian Rhythm In The Regulation Of Cellular Protein Profiles In The Brain, Mustafa Caglar Beker, Ertuğrul Kiliç
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Circadian rhythm plays a significant role in the regulation of almost all kinds of physiological processes. In addition, it may also have a direct or indirect effect on the neurodegenerative processes, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and ischemic stroke. Therefore, the identification of circadian rhythm-related proteins is crucial to be able to understand the molecular mechanism of the circadian rhythm and to define new therapeutic target for the treatment of degenerative disorders. Materials and methods: To identify the light and dark regulated proteins, 8-12 weeks, male Balb/C mice were used at two different time points (morning (Zeitgeber time-0 (ZT0)) …

Background/aim: The presence of comorbidities in patients with acromegaly causes an increase in morbidity and/or mortality and a decrease in quality of life. In this study, we aimed to investigate the demographic, clinical and laboratory features, prevalence of acromegaly-related comorbidities, and factors associated with these comorbidities in patients with acromegaly. Materials and methods: In the study, 96 patients who were followed up with the diagnosis of acromegaly were included. Clinical, laboratory and imaging features, and accompanying comorbidities of the patients were recorded from the patient files. Results: Of the patients included in the study, 63 (65.6%) were female and 33 …

Background/aim : Advanced chronic periodontitis is observed rarely in acromegaly. Periodontal tissue including the alveolar bone is seemed to be spared from the systemic metabolic derangements of bone in this patient population. Chronic elevation of growth hormone, IGF-1, and bone morphogenetic proteins may play a role in periodontal tissue regeneration in acromegalics. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the potential roles of local gingival bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) in periodontal tissue pathology in acromegaly. Materials and methods: Thirty-five patients with acromegaly and 22 healthy subjects were recruited. All the participants were examined by the same periodontologist for the diagnosis …

Background/aim: To reveal the contribution of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to ultrasound (US) in prenatal diagnosis of fetal craniospinal anomalies by retrospectively comparing the prenatal and postnatal findings. Materials and methods: After institutional review board approval, between January 2010 and May 2020, 301 pregnant women, which had a gestational age between 19-37 weeks (mean 26.5 ± 6.1 weeks), diagnosed with cranial and spinal anomalies on fetal US and later on imaged with MRI were evaluated, and in 179 of those cases prenatal imaging findings were compared with postnatal findings. Results: A total of 191 fetal craniospinal anomalies were detected in …

Background/aim: In up to 20% of epilepsy patients, seizures may not be controlled despite the use of antiepileptic drugs, either alone or in combination. These individuals are considered to have drug-resistant epilepsy. Drug-resistant epilepsy is usually associated with intellectual disability, psychiatric comorbidity, physical injury, sudden unexpected death, and low quality of life. Early detection and prediction of drug-resistant epilepsy are essential in determining the patient's most appropriate treatment option. This retrospective study aimed to determine the clinical, electroencephalographic, and radiological factors associated with medically intractable childhood seizures. Materials and methods: Data regarding 177 patients diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy were compared …
