Clinical Practice Guidelines For Assessing And Reporting Workplace Violence Against Nurses, Janice Lynn Canfield Jan 2021

Clinical Practice Guidelines For Assessing And Reporting Workplace Violence Against Nurses, Janice Lynn Canfield

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractWorkplace violence consists of physically and psychologically damaging actions while on duty. In healthcare, under a cloak of secrecy concerning workplace violence, an underreported epidemic exists. This problem is important to address because workplace violence can affect the quality of care delivered and patient care outcomes.. The purpose of this project was to develop a nursing clinical practice guideline (CPG) to assist hospital-based nurses to identify risk factors for workplace violence, identify strategies to mitigate violence, and report workplace violence. This CPG can be an effective tool for nurses to better understand the scope and nature of violence in the …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Post-9/11 veterans’ transitional challenges have become an important topic in veteran studies. However, there was a gap in the literature regarding post-9/11 women veterans’ transitions into the civilian workforce. This interpretative phenomenological analysis explored the lived experiences, challenges, and perceptions of eight post-9/11 women veterans (four enlisted and four commissioned officers) who had transitioned from the military into the civilian workforce within the last 5 years. The study was guided by Schlossberg’s transition theory. Data from transcribed participant interviews were coded and analyzed for emergent themes. The superordinate themes included navigating the career transition, exploring identity shifts, accessibility and use …

Lastly, this study was designed to determine if higher levels of ADHD symptoms correlate with higher numbers of incarcerations across the general adult population. Gestalt versus feature intensive processing theory was used in this study to better …

Leadership Empowerment Behavior And Psychiatric Nurses Intent To Leave, Temitope Kikelomo Gold

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is a shortage of registered nurses (RNs) who work in the specialty of psychiatric nursing. Attrition among psychiatric RNs is partly due to lack of leadership empowerment which includes autonomy and access to professional development opportunities. The purposes of this study, guided by Kanter’s theory of structural empowerment, were to determine (a) if there was a relationship between leadership empowerment behavior and psychiatric RNs’ intent to leave within the first 2 years of practice in inpatient psychiatric settings and (b) if there was a relationship between leadership empowerment behavior and intent to leave among psychiatric registered nurses who are …

Gifted students with high functioning autism (gifted-HFA) are being excluded from gifted programs in one public school setting in the Southeastern United States designed for gifted and high-achieving students. The study’s purpose was to understand teachers’ sense of self-efficacy when teaching gifted-HFA students. The conceptual framework that drove this study was Bandura’s self-efficacy theory. Using a basic qualitative method, interviews were conducted with eight gifted endorsed teachers who had experience teaching gifted-HFA …

Starting the early 1990s, the prevalence of nonmedical prescription drug use in Nigeria has been increased, especially among college students. Potential adverse effects such as poor academic performance and low self-esteem are known, but it is not understood whether demographic factors, level of drug use, and self-esteem are related to drug use for female college students. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study of a cross-sectional nature was to determine if there were predictive relationships between demographics (age, socioeconomic level, educational level, and history of mental illness), level of drug use (as measured by the Drug Abuse Screening Test [DAST], …

Nursing Staff Education Fall Prevention Program At A Skilled Nursing Facility, Solomon Lomo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Falls have negative effects on the confidence, function, and quality of life in older adults and are major cause of injury and death among this population. The quality assurance report in a long-term care facility identified an average of 10 falls per week in the last quarter of 2017. The facility has a person-centered policy, which creates fall prevention challenges when usual fall protective practices are prohibited. The purpose of this education program was to educate staff nurses working with patients in a long-term care facility on additional evidenced based practices to prevent falls and injuries without compromising the person-centered …

African American Females And Herpes Simplex Virus 2: A Basic Interpretive Qualitative Study, Cherlisa Jackson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

According to recent studies, African American females are most susceptible to HSV-2 and are often asymptomatically diagnosed. Yet, the perceived benefit of discussing sexual health as well as recognizing a need to discuss HSV-2 with a healthcare provider was an identified gap in the existing research and current study findings. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive study was to understand the experiences of African American females who received an asymptomatic HSV-2 diagnosis. The health belief model constructs guided this study. Outlined through semi-structured interviews were the experiences of seven African American females diagnosed with HSV-2 in Fulton County, GA, as …

Demographics And 30-Day Readmissions For End-Stage Renal Disease Patients, Shelia Concepcion Perez Jan 2021

Demographics And 30-Day Readmissions For End-Stage Renal Disease Patients, Shelia Concepcion Perez

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is increasingly a problem in the United States, and factors such as race/ethnicity and gender may not only worsen the risk of the disease but also correspond to worse treatment access. This is significant because ESRD is a heavy economic burden not only on patients, but on caregivers and the health care system, especially as disparities remain between different demographic groups. The purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental, historical, correlational design was to determine the extent to which gender and race/ethnicity predict 30-day readmission rates after hospitalization for ESRD patients. The theoretical framework for the current study …

Transition Of Care To Decrease Hospital Readmission After Acute Mi, Patricia Yoon Jan 2021

Transition Of Care To Decrease Hospital Readmission After Acute Mi, Patricia Yoon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The time period after an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) can be overwhelming for patients; while glad to be discharged from the hospital, they may not have the knowledge nor resources to properly manage secondary prevention measures and treatment of residual coronary artery disease (CAD). The gap in nursing practice this project addressed is the lack of follow up of care leading to increased rates of readmission. The goal of this quality improvement (QI) initiative was to evaluate pre/post data and synthesize results to make recommendations for possible practice change whether a 30-day transition of care program could decrease readmission rates …

Workplace Experiences Of Migrant Workers In Colorado, Lynann Holly Butler Jan 2021

The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to better understand the lived experiences of migrant workers in Colorado, who are a growing and impactful population in Colorado. The theoretical framework was Rawl’s social justice theory, which purports that no one group of …

A sample of 161 mental health professionals in New York State completed the scales and separate one-way between-subjects ANOVA tests examined the relationship between variables. A test for the moderating effect of the percentage of trauma clients on the clinician’s caseloads was also conducted between experience level of the clinician and their …
