Metacognitive Strategies Used For Reading Comprehension Among Adult Postsecondary Learners, Mary Lukes
Metacognitive Strategies Used For Reading Comprehension Among Adult Postsecondary Learners, Mary Lukes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractA significant positive correlation between higher metacognitive strategy use and better reading comprehension among native English-speaking children and adult learners of English as an additional language, consistently presented in the literature, has not been consistently or directly found among native English-speaking adult high school graduates who enroll in postsecondary learning programs such as university programs. Consequences for adult learners with lower reading comprehension scores at college entry include significantly lower earnings over their lifespan due in part to greater risk for not completing a postsecondary program. This nonexperimental cross-sectional study was guided by two theoretical frameworks, one for adult reading …

Impact Of Out-Of-Pocket Fees On Under-5 Infant Mortality In Cameroon, Amelie Olga Mafotsing Fopoussi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Health facilities in Cameroon charge fees for treatment and services, which can affect health outcomes for those unable to pay for services. Some studies have shown that the removal of user fees had a positive impact on child health outcomes in selected African countries. The aim of this quantitative, cross-sectional study was to understand whether there is a link between out-of-pocket expenses and under-5 mortality in Cameron. The study was guided by the social ecological framework. Secondary data from the 2011 Cameroon Demographic Health Survey were used in the study. Chi-square, binary logistic regression, and multicollinearity analyses were used to …

The Impact Of Effective Patient Advocacy In Ghana Health Care Reform, Gladys Opong-Tetteh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractPatient advocacy has become a vital concept for healthcare providers all over the world. There is evidence that the concept of patient advocacy is not new in Ghana. However, the degree of its practice continues to be negative and quite narrow in Ghana and even in Africa as a whole. It has also been argued that effective patience advocacy practice is either scarce or non-existent in Ghana. To address this issue, an assessment of the medical policies in Ghana was conducted, informed by the applied psychology theoretical framework. This study focused on using phenomenological inquiry to better understand patients’ experiences …

Background: Accurate and robust pathological image analysis for colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis is time-consuming and knowledge-intensive, but is essential for CRC patients’ treatment. The current heavy workload of pathologists in clinics/hospitals may easily lead to unconscious misdiagnosis of CRC based on daily image analyses. Methods: Based on a state-of-the-art transfer-learned deep convolutional neural network in artificial intelligence (AI), we proposed a novel patch aggregation strategy for clinic CRC diagnosis using weakly labeled pathological whole-slide image (WSI) patches. This approach was trained and validated using an unprecedented and enormously large number of 170,099 patches, > 14,680 WSIs, from > 9631 subjects that covered …
