Biblical Hesed And Nephite Covenant Culture, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2021

Biblical Hesed And Nephite Covenant Culture, Noel B. Reynolds

BYU Studies

The devastating late-nineteenth-century attack on traditional assumptions concerning the preexilic dating of the Pentateuch may have provoked the eventual explosion of twentieth-century scholarly investigation of the covenant culture of the Old Testament. Covenantal texts related to Abraham, Moses, David, and others had long been assumed to be foundational for the religion of ancient Israel, however limited modern understanding of that covenant culture might have been. But the new scholarly paradigm that dated those texts to 621 BC or later gave rise to a wave of skeptical scholarship about the whole tradition of divine covenants as the basis for ancient Israelite …

A Rare Case Of Solid Pseudopapillary Neoplasm Of The Pancreas, Steven Michael, Nadeem Kassam, Aidan Njau, Omar A. Sherman, Harrison Chuwa, Salim Surani

General Surgery, East Africa

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of pancreas (SPN) is a rare entity. It is almost exclusively seen in females within the second and third decades of life with only small minority affecting children. Due to the paucity of the number of cases seen, the natural history of the disease is not fully understood. SPN tumors of the pancreas are usually found incidentally and usually have an excellent prognosis. We herein present a case of a 33-year-old lady diagnosed with SPN, who presented with abdominal fullness, two weeks post cesarean sectio

Rapid Golgi Stain For Dendritic Spine Visualization In Hippocampus And Prefrontal Cortex, Maya Frankfurt, Rachel E. Bowman Jan 2021

Rapid Golgi Stain For Dendritic Spine Visualization In Hippocampus And Prefrontal Cortex, Maya Frankfurt, Rachel E. Bowman

Psychology Faculty Publications

Golgi impregnation, using the Golgi staining kit with minor adaptations, is used to impregnate dendritic spines in the rat hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex. This technique is a marked improvement over previous methods of Golgi impregnation because the premixed chemicals are safer to use, neurons are consistently well impregnated, there is far less background debris, and for a given region, there are extremely small deviations in spine density between experiments. Moreover, brains can be accumulated after a certain point and kept frozen until further processing. Using this method any brain region of interest can be studied. Once stained and cover …

The False Dichotomy Of Corporate Governance Platitudes, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw Jan 2021

The False Dichotomy Of Corporate Governance Platitudes, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

In 2019, the Business Roundtable amended its principles of corporate governance, deleting references to the primary purpose of the corporation being to serve the shareholders. In doing so, it renewed the “shareholder vs. stakeholder” debate among academic theorists and politicians. The thesis here is that the zero-sum positions of the contending positions are a false dichotomy, failing to capture the complexity of the corporate management game as it is actually played. Sweeping and absolutist statements of the primary purpose of the corporation are based on arid thought experiments and idiosyncratic cases in which corporate leaders have managed to be either …

Materiality Thresholds: Empirical Evidence From Change In Accounting Estimate Disclosures, Daniel Gyung Paik, Philip Keunho Chung, Collin Rabe, Marshall A. Geiger

Accounting Faculty Publications

This paper provides empirical evidence on the materiality thresholds adopted in “change in accounting estimate” (CAE) disclosures. We also investigate the characteristics of the disclosing firms and their auditors, as well as the characteristics of the CAEs, such as the effect on income, the accounts affected, and disclosure venue. U.S. GAAP requires firms to disclose a CAE if its effect on the financial statements is deemed to be “material” (ASC 250-50-4). We analyze 4,335 CAE disclosures from 2006 to 2016 and provide the first descriptive evidence of the actual materiality thresholds used for CAE disclosures in practice. Our main finding …

An Empirical Examination Of The Computer Security Behaviors Of Telecommuters Working With Confidential Data Through Leveraging The Factors From Fear Appeals Model (Fam), Titus Dohnfon Fofung

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Computer users’ security compliance behaviors can be better understood by devising an experimental study to examine how fear appeals might impact users’ security behavior. Telecommuter security behavior has become very relevant in information systems (IS) research with the growing number of individuals working from home. The increasing dependence on telecommuting to enhance the viability and convenience has created an urgency with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic to examine the behavior of users working at home across a corporate network. The home networks are usually not as secure as those in corporate settings. There is seldom a firewall setting and …

Ordered Physical Human Activity Recognition Based On Ordinal Classification, Duygu Bağci Daş, Derya Bi̇rant

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Human activity recognition (HAR) is a critical process for applications that focus on the classification of human physical activities such as jogging, walking, downstairs, and upstairs. Ordinal classification (OC) is a special type of supervised multi-class classification in which an inherent ordering among the classes exists, such as low, medium, and high. This study combines these two concepts and introduces an approach to ?human activity recognition based on ordinal classification? (HAROC). In the proposed approach, ordinal classification is applied to human activity recognition where the physical activities can be ordered by using their signals? band power values. This is the …

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused millions of deaths and changed daily life globally. Countries have declared a half or full lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19. According to medical doctors, as many people as possible should be tested to identify their status, and corresponding actions then should be taken for COVID-19 positive cases. Despite the clear necessity of these medical tests, many countries are still struggling to acquire them. This fact clearly indicates the necessity of a large-scale, cheap, fast, and accurate alternative prescreening tool that can be used for the diagnosis of COVID-19 while waiting for the medical …

Contemporary History In Early Tudor English Chronicles: 1485-1553, Barrett L. Beer Jan 2021

Contemporary History In Early Tudor English Chronicles: 1485-1553, Barrett L. Beer

Quidditas

English chronicles published between 1485 and 1547 are studied here to determine how they dealt with contemporary history. These chronicles obviously covered the distant past, but many end well before the date of publication. Today contemporary history is of great importance to the public as evidenced by a variety of published works, periodicals, and most recently the internet. An analysis of early Tudor chronicles reveals that while many were indifferent to the recent past, others clearly laid the foundation for a focus on the contemporary era. The recognized authors of the chronicles included in this study are Richard Arnold, John …

For Our Good, Lindon J. Robison Jan 2021

For Our Good, Lindon J. Robison

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

“Know thou, my son, that all these [hard] things shall give thee experience and shall be for thy good.” (Doctrine and Covenants 122:7)[1] Our faith can sometimes falter when we face hard times that are difficult to reconcile with a God who loves all his children infinitely and completely, both everywhere and all the time. We may sometimes feel like Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, who complained to God, “I know, I know. We are Your chosen people. But [sometimes], can’t You choose someone else?”[2] How do we respond to Tevye and others who wonder why hard things happen— …

Latter-Day Houses Of The Lord: Developments In Their Design And Function, Richard O. Cowan Jan 2021

Latter-Day Houses Of The Lord: Developments In Their Design And Function, Richard O. Cowan

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This essay traces the modern-day usage and understanding of temples from the Kirtland Temple to Nauvoo and the Salt Lake Temple. Architecture was used to teach principles. While the Kirtland Temple was preparatory (think of the vision of Christ and the conference of keys by Abraham, Moses, Abraham, Elias, and finally Elijah), the Nauvoo Temple was dedicated to ritual usage. In 1879, the Church reduced temple usage to rituals, and thus assembly rooms are missing from later temples. Through his paper, Cowan shows how temples have changed according to revelation and how prophets have seen models in vision that then …

There Are Two Sides To Every Story, Keith A. Erekson Jan 2021

There Are Two Sides To Every Story, Keith A. Erekson

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

This article is the fifth chapter in his Real vs. Rumor: How to Dispel Latter-day Myths (Deseret Book, 2021), 62–76. Each chapter introduces a “Thinking Habit” that serves as an antidote to poor thinking. Along the way, the book also identifies applications for daily life in “Everyday Encounter” sidebars and each chapter ends with a summary section that identifies quick ways to identify poor thinking – the “Sniff Tests”—and restates important points from the chapter. Believing (and teaching) that “There Are Two Sides to Every Story” is an unhelpful mental framework—one of the “Myths within Us” that impede our thinking …

“There’S Rosemary, That’S For Remembrance:” Suicide Ideation And Portraying Ophelia’S Madness, Ian M. Borden, Sarah Imes Borden Jan 2021

“There’S Rosemary, That’S For Remembrance:” Suicide Ideation And Portraying Ophelia’S Madness, Ian M. Borden, Sarah Imes Borden

Quidditas

Ophelia’s madness in Hamlet is too often portrayed or understood in a generalized fashion. Historical analysis of the play, as well as historical and recent reviews of Ophelia’s performance show how Ophelia has been considered a character controlled by outside forces, and her madness lacking direction or purpose. Applying the concept of suicide ideation to the character’s actions illuminates both our historical understanding of the character, and provides modern day performers a cohesive and focused model from which to draw.

Best Regulatory Practices For Deep Seabed Mining: Lessons Learned From The U.S. Surface Mining Control And Reclamation Act, Mark S. Squillace Jan 2021

Best Regulatory Practices For Deep Seabed Mining: Lessons Learned From The U.S. Surface Mining Control And Reclamation Act, Mark S. Squillace

Publications

Mining operations around the globe are responsible for significant environmental problems. These problems often stem from poor planning, inadequate regulatory standards, and a failure of regulatory oversight, particularly with respect to inspection and enforcement regimes. Mining regulators are often hamstrung, however, by inadequate information about potential impacts before operations commence. This problem is particularly daunting when considering mining on ocean floors where information about the environment is limited, and the impacts of mining are poorly understood.

As the International Seabed Authority (ISA) develops a comprehensive regulatory program for deep seabed mining, they should draw on the experience gained in regulating …

Prevention And Cure, Michael Pappas Jan 2021

Prevention And Cure, Michael Pappas

Publications

Laws can address harms in two distinct yet intersecting ways. They may intervene to prevent harms from occurring, or they may allow harms to arise and then try to cure them.

Whether operating separately or in tandem, prevention and cure approaches pervade laws, policies, and individual actions. A landlord may exercise prevention via a "no pets " policy, or she may opt for cure by requiring pet owners to pay a damage deposit and cleaning fee. Alternatively, a combination of prevention and cure governs motorist behavior. Speed limits seek to prevent accidents while negligence liability provides compensation for accident victims. …

Imagining The Progressive Prosecutor, Benjamin Levin Jan 2021

Imagining The Progressive Prosecutor, Benjamin Levin

Publications

As criminal justice reform has attracted greater public support, a new brand of district attorney candidate has arrived: the “progressive prosecutors.” Commentators increasingly have keyed on “progressive prosecutors” as offering a promising avenue for structural change, deserving of significant political capital and academic attention. This Essay asks an unanswered threshold question: what exactly is a “progressive prosecutor”? Is that a meaningful category at all, and if so, who is entitled to claim the mantle? In this Essay, I argue that “progressive prosecutor” means many different things to many different people. These differences in turn reveal important fault lines in academic …

Decolonizing Indigenous Migration, Angela R. Riley, Kristen A. Carpenter Jan 2021

Decolonizing Indigenous Migration, Angela R. Riley, Kristen A. Carpenter

Publications

As global attention turns increasingly to issues of migration, the Indigenous identity of migrants often remains invisible. At the U.S.-Mexico border, for example, a significant number of the individuals now being detained are people of indigenous origin, whether Kekchi, Mam, Achi, Ixil, Awakatek, Jakaltek or Qanjobal, coming from communities in Venezuela, Honduras, Guatemala and other countries. They may be leaving their homelands precisely because their rights as Indigenous Peoples, for example the right to occupy land collectively and without forcible removal, have been violated. But once they reach the United States, they are treated as any other migrants, without regard …
