Global Southerners In The North, Ama Francis Jan 2021

Global Southerners In The North, Ama Francis

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL) scholarship contends that international law privileges nation-states in the Global North over those in the Global South. The literature primarily draws on a Westphalian conception of the North-South divide in analyzing asymmetrical issues of power in the global political economy. Given the expansion of global capitalism, however, the nation-state-based mode of analysis misses the fact that there are Global Souths in the geographic North and Global Norths in the geographic South. This Essay makes two theoretical claims.

First, it argues that racial capitalism renders expendable populations across the geographic North and South, destabilizing …

The Climate Leadership And Community Protection Act’S Environmental Justice Promise, Hillary Aidun, Julia Li, Antonia Pereira

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

In 2019, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (“CLCPA”) into law. The CLCPA was passed with the objective of addressing climate change and minimizing the adverse impacts on the “economic well-being, public health, natural resources, and the environment of New York.” S. 6599, 2019-2020 Sen., Reg. Sess. § 1 (N.Y. 2019). The CLCPA seeks to meet these objectives by reducing statewide greenhouse gas emissions, scaling up renewable energy to avoid further climate change, and improving the resiliency of the state in order to address unavoidable climate change impacts. Id. The law created …

Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

Resistance training immediately after a burn injury has not been investigated previously. This randomised, controlled trial assessed the impact of resistance training on quality of life plus a number of physical, functional and safety outcomes in adults with a burn injury. Patients were randomly assigned to receive, in addition to standard physiotherapy, four weeks of high intensity resistance training (RTG) or sham resistance training (CG) three days per week, commenced within 72h of the burn injury. Outcome data was collected at six weeks, three and six months after burn injury. Quality of life at 6 months was the primary endpoint. …

Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

Perceptual-cognitive-motor skills, such as visual anticipation, are pivotal for superior performance in sport. However, there are only a limited number of skill acquisition specialists working with coaches to develop these skills in athletes. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief reflection on the use of psychological strategies to create an autonomy-supportive environment to embed a skill acquisition research project in high-performance sport. The research project was conducted with the Australian national field hockey high-performance unit and investigated individual differences in expert goalkeepers’ visual anticipation. The paper first discusses the role of a skill acquisition specialist, how they …

Speech-Language Pathologist And Parent Perspectives On Speech-Language Pathology Services For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Brenda L. Beverly, L. Amanda Mathews Jan 2021

Speech-Language Pathologist And Parent Perspectives On Speech-Language Pathology Services For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Brenda L. Beverly, L. Amanda Mathews

Brenda L. Beverly Publications

Many speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are underprepared to serve children with ASD, despite a growing need and increased expectation for ASD expertise. To understand this practice gap, 60 SLPs and 26 parents of children with ASD were surveyed regarding SLP knowledge and competency. Of concern was that only about 50% of SLPs correctly identified ASD defining criteria. Respondents rated eight SLP practices as Important to Very Important, but SLPs reported being only Somewhat Competent to Competent. The parents’ rating of SLP competency was significantly lower than parental ratings of importance for one educational practice, use of non-standardized assessment and observational methods. …

Assessing Language Delay In Twins: Low Gesture Use And Birth History Factors, Lori G. Foran, Kelli J. Evans, Brenda L. Beverly Jan 2021

Assessing Language Delay In Twins: Low Gesture Use And Birth History Factors, Lori G. Foran, Kelli J. Evans, Brenda L. Beverly

Brenda L. Beverly Publications

Identification of language disorders in children younger than 3 years remains challenging despite agreement that early intervention improves outcomes. This study of twin language and gesture development substantiated the twinning effect, an unexplained lag in expressive and receptive language seen in twins, for a group of 88, 16- to 18-month-old twins who did not present with extreme perinatal risk. A valid, parent-report measure revealed word production ≤10th percentile for 15 twins. Pregnancy complications, but not a positive family history of speech, language or learning disorders or other case history factors, significantly increased the odds of this early expressive delay. …

Utilizing An Instructional Intervention In Aquatics: An Experimental Study For Improving Wellness Awareness In Adults, Felisa Fayette Mastel

Education

The medical community recognizes the importance of regular, vigorous exercise. The evidence is indeed overwhelming in support of physical fitness for the prevention of disease and disability; yet nearly 80% of the population does not exercise enough to produce a health benefit (CDC, 2018). Thus, it is necessary to find a way to assist individuals to increase an awareness concerning physical fitness and furthermore, overall wellness awareness. This quantitative study’s instructional intervention treatment interlaced the six dimensions of wellness and Knowles andragogy interwoven within a single activity; in this case water exercise. Hence, the purpose of this study was to …

Redefining What's Manly: Using Masculine Attributes To Describe Counseling Services For Men, Riley Nicholas Rodemaker Jan 2021

Redefining What's Manly: Using Masculine Attributes To Describe Counseling Services For Men, Riley Nicholas Rodemaker

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Men are diagnosed with mental illness at a similar rate to women, and men deal with similar levels of impairment (Kessler et al., 1994). Despite this impairment, men do not seek help for their mental health as often as women do (Smith et al., 2013). One reason may be that counseling is seen as feminine. In this thesis, I describe an experimental study that examined the effect of using masculine attributes to describe counseling services on men’s attitudes. Adult male participants ages 18 to 35 (N = 818) read a short story that featured a conversation with a friend that …

Examining Individual Differences In Attitudes Toward The Insanity Defense, Dominique M. Kornely Jan 2021

Examining Individual Differences In Attitudes Toward The Insanity Defense, Dominique M. Kornely

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present study was to examine how individual differences in stigma against people who are mentally ill, free will beliefs, just world beliefs, and sentencing goals are associated with attitudes toward the insanity defense. Because there are many misconceptions about what the insanity defense is, and how it is actually used as a sentence, the Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) plea may be underutilized due to public opinions reflecting misunderstanding and/or possible biases (Perlin, 2017). Understanding the relation between individual beliefs and attitudes about the insanity defense would help to better understand potential biases present …

Executive Functions And Writing Skills In Children With And Without Adhd, Elia F. Soto, Lauren N. Irwin, Elizabeth S.M. Chan, Jamie A. Spiegel, Michael J. Kofler Jan 2021

Executive Functions And Writing Skills In Children With And Without Adhd, Elia F. Soto, Lauren N. Irwin, Elizabeth S.M. Chan, Jamie A. Spiegel, Michael J. Kofler

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Pediatric attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been associated with impairments in executive functioning and academic writing skills. However, our understanding of the extent to which these children’s writing difficulties are related to their underdeveloped executive functions—and whether this relation is attributable to specific executive functions—is limited. Method: A clinically-evaluated and carefullyphenotyped sample of 91 children ages 8–13 (M = 10.60, SD = 1.25; 37 girls) were administered multiple, counterbalanced tests of the three core executive functions (working memory, inhibitory control, set shifting), assessed for ADHD symptoms via multiple-informant reports, and completed standardized, norm-referenced testing of three core writing skills (written expression, …

Tele-Forensic Interviewing Can Be A Reasonable Alternative To Face-To-Face Interviewing Of Child Witnesses., Jason J. Dickinson, Nicole E. Lytle, Debra Ann Poole

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Objective: Tele-forensic interviews have the potential to aid investigations when children live far from interviewers, there is a risk of disease transmission, or when expertise is not locally available. However, it is unknown whether tele-forensic interviewing is an effective alternative to face-to-face interviewing, particularly for children most prone to suggestibility and lapses of attention. Hypotheses: Previous studies suggested that school-age children would provide similar amounts of information across interview modes but provided no basis for predicting how misinformation impacts accuracy across modes or how 4- and 5-year-olds would react to tele-forensic interviewing. Method: Children (4–8 years, N = 261, Mage …

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

The purpose of the study was to understand the perspective of kinesthetic learners in an online learning environment. A Microsoft Forms survey was created and distributed to the sample population using the university electronic mailing list. If self-identified as kinesthetic learners, subjects were asked to participate in a semi-structured focus group. Twenty-six subjects responded to the survey, with 73% (n=19) identifying as kinesthetic learners. Quantitative results showed subjects felt most confident in content comprehension but less confident in clinical application. Qualitative data collection led to emergence of the following four themes—advantages, disadvantages, accommodations to e-learning, and external factors. …

Clinical And Professional Reasoning Development In Level Ii Fieldwork: Occupational Therapy Assistant Students’ Perception, Marie-Christine Potvin, Jeanne M. Coviello, Eden Rothacker, Caitlin Taylor, Taryn Pettigrew, Mary Beth Thomas, Laronda Lockhart-Keene

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Occupational therapy academic programs are tasked with preparing occupational therapy assistant (OTA) students to develop and use clinical and professional reasoning in practice. A component of this academic education, Level II fieldwork (FW), develops clinical and professional reasoning by allowing students to practice this skill. Although numerous studies have investigated this topic in occupational therapy students, only one small study has previously investigated this in OTA students during Level II FW. Thus, we designed a mixed methods study of OTA students during Level II FW (n = 58) to confirm and expand our knowledge of learning experiences that develop …

Characterization Of Unintentionally Released Nanometric Particles In Various Workplaces, Maximilien Debia, Cyril Catto, Alan Fleck, Jean-Philippe Masse, Gilles L'Espérance, Brigitte Roberge

The Application Of International Tax Treaties To Digital Services Taxes, Katherine E. Karnosh Jan 2021

The Application Of International Tax Treaties To Digital Services Taxes, Katherine E. Karnosh

Chicago Journal of International Law

As digital services and electronic commerce have become more prevalent aspects of the global economy, there have been concerns over how tax systems will adapt to this change. International tax treaties in particular seem to be outdated and unprepared for the digital economy. Many international tax treaties provide that businesses are to be taxed on their income only in jurisdictions where they have a sufficient physical presence. By establishing their European headquarters and digital servers in countries with low corporate income tax rates (such as Ireland) and then using those headquarters to provide digital services to the rest of Europe, …

Wilderness Law In The Anthropocene: Purism Or Pragmatism, Phillipa C. Mccormack, Benjamin J. Richardson, David Takacs, Kees Bastmeijer

Faculty Scholarship

Wilderness is vanishing. Despite explicit legislative protection of wilderness values for over half a century, rapid environmental degradation worldwide in recent decades has severely diminished the extent and quality of terrestrial and marine wilderness to the point where we must reassess the fundamental premises and future of wilderness law. With increased human demands on the natural world, and with climate breakdown looming, the very notion of “wilderness” itself may one day be considered meaningless or irrelevant. We examine legal developments in the United States, Australia, and Europe to critically evaluate the state of wilderness law. In this Anthropocene era, when …

Differential Etiology: Inferring Specific Causation In The Law From Group Data In Science, Joseph Sanders, David L. Faigman, Peter B. Imrey, Philip Dawid

In every toxic-tort case, the plaintiff must prove that the defendant exposed the plaintiff to something that caused an injury. The causal proof is in two parts: proof of general causation and proof of specific causation. General causation addresses the question of whether the exposure can cause injury in anyone. In the area of toxic torts, the evidence available to answer this question comes in the form of groupbasedstudies in the fields of toxicology, epidemiology, and genetics—studies that search for the effects of causes. Proof of general causation, however, is not enough. Because court cases focus on the individual, the …

The second Essay focuses on challenges to including immigrants, Asian Americans, and Latinos in the 2020 Census. Together, the Essays critique …

Race, School Policing, And Public Health, Thalia Gonzalez Jan 2021

Race, School Policing, And Public Health, Thalia Gonzalez

Faculty Scholarship

The ever-growing list of names of Black victims who have died at the hands ofpolice has emboldened a new public narrative that frames police violence—and other more commonplace, though less lethal, disparate policing practices—as a public health crisis rooted in this country’s history of racism and anti-Blackness. This public narrative in turn has spawned a diverse set of responsive actions in both the public and private sectors directed at addressing the effects of individual and structural racism on health. Yet missing from this linkage between police violence and racialized health disparities is any focus on the educational system, despite the …

Abstract

Purpose: We describe the first-in-human dose-escalation trial for ALRN-6924, a stabilized, cell-permeating peptide that disrupts p53 inhibition by MDM2 and MDMX to induce cell cycle arrest or apoptosis in TP53 wild-type tumors.

Methods: Two schedules were evaluated for safety, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and anti-tumor effects in patients with solid tumors or lymphomas: In arm A, patients received ALRN-6924 by intravenous infusion once-weekly for 3 weeks every 28 days; arm B, was twice-weekly for 2 weeks every 21 days.

Results: Seventy-one patients were enrolled: 41 in arm A (0.16-4.4 mg/kg), 30 in arm B (0.32-2.7 mg/kg). ALRN-6924 showed dose-dependent pharmacokinetics and …
