Notes On U. S. Arsenals, Depots, And Martial Firearms Of The Second Seminole War, M. L. Brown

Florida Historical Quarterly

Escalating complaints to the United States War Department about ineffectual ordnance management by the Corps of Artillery, coupled with the rapid technological evolution of innovative small arms systems and radical manufacturing techniques, prompted Congress to pass the act of April 5, 1832, which resurrected an independent Ordnance Department. Elevated a grade in rank and appointed Chief of Ordnance on May 30 was Lieutenant Colonel George Bomford, USA (1780-1848).

German Tourists In Florida: A Two-Century Record, Earl R. Beck Dec 2021

German Tourists In Florida: A Two-Century Record, Earl R. Beck

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1981, 74,219 West German tourists landed in the airport in Miami. This figure, which represents over a ten per cent increase over 1980, does not take account of many Germans who came to Florida after landing elsewhere in the United States. Those thousands of Germans who visit Florida today are continuing the lively interest in this state which began more than two hundred years ago. But, strangely enough, the number of German accounts of Florida and its myriad lures has been quite small. Stranger still, while tourism has grown, German writing about Florida has declined, and some recent accounts …

Florida Legislative Committees: Their Growth Since 1822, Allen Morris

Florida Historical Quarterly

Nine of the thirteen members of Florida’s first Legislative Council had reached Pensacola to take the oath of office on July 22, 1822. Officers were elected the following day, and a committee of two was appointed to advise Governor William P. DuVal that the council was ready to proceed to business. On the same day that the governor’s message was received by the council, segments of it were referred to committees of four members “with authority to report by bill or otherwise” on matters relating to the judiciary and revenue. In immediate succession, other committees of three to five members …

Plantation Self-Sufficiency In Leon County, Florida: 1824-1860, Margaret T. Ordonez Dec 2021

Plantation Self-Sufficiency In Leon County, Florida: 1824-1860, Margaret T. Ordonez

Florida Historical Quarterly

Economic independence from the North was a desired goal of antebellum southern leaders of the nineteenth century. Southern Commercial Convention participants strongly supported such independence at their meetings held irregularly between 1837 and 1860. They proposed that Southerners should trade directly with Europe for manufactured goods in exchange for cotton and other products produced in the South. In Leon County, Florida, newly-settled planters had arranged for direct trade with Liverpool by 1831. Plantation supplies such as Negro clothes and blankets, bagging, iron, and salt from Liverpool sold at lower prices than similar goods from New York in 1835. Although the …

Wherever The Fight Is Thickest: General James Patton Anderson Of Florida, Larry Rayburn Dec 2021

Wherever The Fight Is Thickest: General James Patton Anderson Of Florida, Larry Rayburn

Florida Historical Quarterly

On the night of October 8, 1861, in the harbor of Pensacola Bay, long columns of gray clad soldiers marched slowly aboard steamers moored by the dock. Officers whispered orders, and the enlisted men spoke in hushed tones. Aside from their voices, only the rattle of canteens and the lapping of water against the steamers broke the silence of the autumn darkness.

Billy Graham In Florida, Lois Ferm Dec 2021

Billy Graham In Florida, Lois Ferm

Florida Historical Quarterly

Billy Graham who suffered periodic attacks of influenza when he was a young boy, first came to Florida because the doctors hoped that a warm climate would restore his health. However, in terms of his career in evangelism, his decision to move South seems almost providential, for as a student at the Florida Bible Institute in Tampa in the 1930s, he was exposed to a veritable “Who’s Who” of evangelical giants. As a high school student, Billy had accepted the claims of Jesus Christ on his life and had surrendered his life to Christ in a revival service held in …

Florida Seminoles And The Census Of 1900, Harry A. Kersey, Jr. Dec 2021

Florida Seminoles And The Census Of 1900, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

One of the most persistent problems confronting historians dealing with the Seminole Indians in Florida during the late-nineteenth century has been a paucity of reliable population data. In the first four decades of the modern tribal era, the years following cessation of the Third Seminole War in 1858, there was only one attempt at a comprehensive account of Florida Seminoles. That was a survey conducted in the winter of 1880-1881 by Clay MacCauley for the Smithsonian Institution, which yielded what has become the generally accepted base line population figures. He found 208 Seminoles residing in the state, the unhappy remnant …

Bernard Lintot: A Connecticut Yankee On The Mississippi, 1775-1805, Robin Fabel Dec 2021

Bernard Lintot: A Connecticut Yankee On The Mississippi, 1775-1805, Robin Fabel

Florida Historical Quarterly

Deciding where one’s allegiance lay and adhering to it in the era of the American Revolution was not always easy. Changing it was common but Bernard Lintot changed his an extraordinary number of times. He was successively a citizen of the colony of Connecticut, a loyalist inhabitant of British West Florida, a subject of the king of Spain, a citizen of the state of Connecticut, and finally a founding member of the United States Mississippi territory. He represented unusual continuity. His was one of the very few of the old families of Mississippi to establish itself there during the period …

Arturo O'Neill: First Governor Of West Florida During The Second Spanish Period, Eric Beerman Dec 2021

Arturo O'Neill: First Governor Of West Florida During The Second Spanish Period, Eric Beerman

Florida Historical Quarterly

An Irish lieutenant colonel in the Hibernia Regiment— Arturo O’Neill— gazed through the late afternoon haze that ninth day of March in 1781 and received his first look at Sigüenza Point on the western end of Santa Rosa Island at the entrance of Pensacola Bay. As the Spanish invasion fleet moved closer, Arturo O’Neill saw the hill behind Pensacola with British Fort George dominating the surrounding terrain. He no doubt felt a certain trepidation as the Spaniards would be making a nighttime assault on Sigüenza. However, this was not his baptism of fire and with veteran Hibernia troops around him, …

Personal Development Planning And Vertical Leadership Development In A Vuca World, Kevin Coopersmith Dec 2021

Personal Development Planning And Vertical Leadership Development In A Vuca World, Kevin Coopersmith

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

To explore how personal development can be utilized as a tool for leaders to adapt to our VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) world, a qualitative study was conducted on the narrative experiences of eight leaders who had successfully completed personal development plans. The emerging field of vertical leadership development, recognized as a unique developmental approach towards overcoming complexity and uncertainty, was connected to the key themes of personal development planning. Vertical leadership development and personal development planning were united across five conceptual themes: development and application of skills, self-awareness, self-efficacy, self-exploration, and continuous improvement. The experiences of the participants …

Prudence, Ethics And Anticipation In Visionary Leaders, Yanick Farmer Dec 2021

Prudence, Ethics And Anticipation In Visionary Leaders, Yanick Farmer

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

In ethics, prudence is an essential skill in making informed decisions. Although several studies in various fields have dealt with the notion, few empirical studies have addressed one of its inextricable aspects: anticipation. To gain a better understanding of the notion, this study questioned fifteen leaders whose peers consider to be “visionary” in their respective fields. The results of this qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews describe the fundamental aspects of anticipation according to three categories: reasoning and trend analysis, implementation and strategy, and personality and values.

A Leadership Role: Creating An Ethics Of Diversity, Joseph P. Hester Dec 2021

A Leadership Role: Creating An Ethics Of Diversity, Joseph P. Hester

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Although we desire peace and tranquility, harmony and social stability, life can be harsh and brutish. We also acknowledge exploiting the values of others for self- aggrandizement negates their sacred personhood. And although we dance on the summit of individual rights and liberties conceding their personal and private nature, we need to understand democracy is built on a collectivity of like-minded people, on a foundation of dialogic civility, communal accountability, and a moral sensibility that is pubic and open to criticism and adjustments.
