We Hold These Distruths To Be Self-Evident: How Legal History Could Save America From Itself, William Murphy
We Hold These Distruths To Be Self-Evident: How Legal History Could Save America From Itself, William Murphy
Journal of Global Awareness
This paper explores the threat of disinformation to American society. Focusing on social and cable news media as the primary disseminators of disinformation, it examines how the very design and nature of these two mediums promote and stimulate the intentional and viral spread of wholly inaccurate information as well as the significant and tangible negative consequences experienced across American society as a result. The paper subsequently proposes a legal solution to this dilemma in the form of a repeal of Section 230 paired with a reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine. The background, history, and effect of each are thoroughly discussed, …

Teaching And Assessing College Stem Courses Online During Covid-19: Evidence-Based Strategies And Recommendations, Santanu De, Georgina Arguello
FDLA Journal
Since the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, most schools, colleges, and universities worldwide underwent a paradigm shift by transitioning to digital teaching and learning modalities. This phenomenon was essential to mitigate the contagion; however, the academic institutions needed to quickly come up with ways to ensure that the quality and rigor of education were maintained, especially the active and experiential learning required by undergraduate and graduate courses in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This paper highlights key approaches reported or proposed to effectively conduct college-level, in-person STEM courses online owing to the pandemic. These would range from synchronous versus asynchronous pedagogies …

Philosophical Foundations Of African Women's Indigenous Knowledge For Food Security: Towards Narrative Feminist Pedagogy, Humphrey Jeremiah Ojwang, Wanjiku Mukabi Kabira, Penninah Amolo Ogada
FDLA Journal
This paper explores the pedagogical value of African Women’s Indigenous Knowledge or Food Security. The approach is narratological and takes into account oral testimonies and life-stories of women farmers in Homa Bay County, Kenya. The paper proposes African feminist epistemology as a viable approach in the pedagogy of food security and agricultural extension in rural Kenya. This is a paradigm shift which incorporates women farmers’ indigenous knowledge in formal agricultural education and extension programmes. The paradigm shift to African feminist epistemology is a response to a pedagogical anomaly where women’s indigenous knowledge has been relegated to the sidelines, with hegemonic …

Patient Placement Matters: A Systematic Review Of The Impact Of Multiple Patient Placement, Jacqueline Strinden
Patient Placement Matters: A Systematic Review Of The Impact Of Multiple Patient Placement, Jacqueline Strinden
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Abstract
Background
Inattention to the frequency of patient movement has been correlated with system-induced harm events, diminished favorable health outcomes, and reduction in patient and staff satisfaction. The incidence of adverse events increases significantly when multiple unnecessary lateral relocations result from secondary efforts to relieve hospital capacity constraints and improve efficiency.
Methods
A systematic review of literature was conducted to evaluate the impact of adverse events, patient and staff perceptions, and resource utilization on frequent patient placement events.
Results
Results of the analysis demonstrate that increased adverse events, negative patient and staff perceptions, increased workload, and resource utilization is significantly …

Single-Cell Rna Sequencing (Scrna-Seq) Exploratory Analyses To Investigate Aging-Dependent Changes And Regional Heterogeneity In Glial Cells, Valerie N. Doze
CSB and SJU Distinguished Thesis
My thesis project research consisted of single-cell RNA-sequencing and bioinformatics using R programming and Neuroscience Multi-omic Data Archive (NeMO) Analytics to examine the impact of aging, brain region, and other variables on the genotypes and phenotypes of oligodendrocytes (OLGs) and oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs). The overarching goal was to increase understanding of glial cell fate and function. After determining bioinformatical findings, follow-up wet-bench experiments were performed to validate results. RNA in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry were performed to confirm differential gene expression across cell types and brain regions. These experiments also revealed any changes in oligodendrocyte (OLG) development and maturation …

People with mental illnesses are at a significantly greater risk of police arrest than the general population. This pattern of arrests has been associated with a phenomenon referred to as the criminalization of mental illness. The influence of mental health and the criminal justice system will be discussed throughout this paper. The research discussed within this paper serves as a framework for the development of a co-occurring curriculum. The curriculum developed includes components related to the overall goal of criminal justice (reducing recidivism) while addressing mental health components within a therapeutic group setting. The focus of the curriculum attached is …

Commonalities Between Urban Mental Health And Rural Mental Health, Casey Bohlman
Commonalities Between Urban Mental Health And Rural Mental Health, Casey Bohlman
Counselor Education Capstones
During research into mental health, a common theme is the needs of urban and rural communities. There are entire journals dedicated to the mental health needs of these groups. Some common problems faced in both areas are access to mental health services as well as value systems that create barriers to accepting mental health services. The struggle to accept the help from very limited and often underfunded mental health services provides a perfect storm for rampant mental health and drug abuse problems. This is a review the current literature regarding the mental health services and barriers in these communities to …

Mental Health Concerns In Graduate Students: Implications And Effective Interventions, Brody Fanshaw
Counselor Education Capstones
Graduate school can be a stressful time for students. In addition to academic tasks, individuals in graduate programs frequently experience stress due to personal and professional obligations. The distressing nature of managing these priorities allows for an increase in mental health concerns, such as depression, anxiety, and suicidality. The reviewed literature finds that programs that have positive factors within their department, such as a positive environment and supportive advisement, allow for an opportunity to curb these concerns. The literature also notes the importance of universities preparing their students for these stressors during their time in their graduate program, in addition …

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a stress-based condition that a person develops after being exposed to an overwhelmingly traumatic event. Military troops frequently experience stress and trauma, making them highly susceptible to psychopathology. This paper evaluates nine clinical trials that used either magic mushrooms, marijuana, or MDMA as an adjunct to traditional psychotherapy to treat veterans who suffer from anxiety, depression, PTSD, suicidality, and other psychopathologies. Multiple scholarly journals and articles were read and analyzed, which show support for the therapeutic potential of psychedelic drugs in treating veterans with PTSD. After receiving psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, the research showed participants experienced a …

The genetic and developmental mechanisms involved in limb formation are relatively well documented, but how these mechanisms are modulated by changes in chondrocyte physiology to produce differences in limb bone length remains unclear. Here, we used high throughput RNA sequencing (RNAseq) to probe the developmental genetic basis of variation in limb bone length in Longshanks, a mouse model of experimental evolution. We find that increased tibia length in Longshanks is associated with altered expression of a few key endochondral ossification genes such as Npr3, Dlk1, Sox9, and Sfrp1, as well reduced expression of Fxyd2, a facultative subunit of the cell …

Mitigation of atmospheric emission of methane from leaky underground infrastructure is important for controlling the global anthropogenic greenhouse gas burden. Overexposure to methane may also cause occupational health problems in indoor/outdoor environments at the local scale. Subsurface soil conditions (e.g. soil heterogeneity) affect methane migration in soils while near-surface atmospheric boundary conditions (e.g. wind and temperature) affect off-site emissions across the soil-atmosphere interface. This study investigated the above-surface methane concentration boundary-layer development under different soil conditions (homogenous and layered) and atmospheric boundary controls (wind and temperature). A series of controlled bench-scale experiments was conducted using an open-loop boundary-layer wind tunnel …

A Case Of Unintentional Isopropanol Poisoning Via Transdermal Absorption Delayed By Weekly Hemodialysis, Andrew R. Chavez, Michael T. Sweeney, Peter Akpunonu
Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND Isopropanol toxicity is the most common reported toxic alcohol ingestion in the United States and is well known to emergency physicians. Most toxicities result from unintentional ingestion of rubbing alcohol; however, an under-recognized mechanism of unintentional toxicity is transdermal absorption. Additionally, hemodialysis effectively removes isopropanol and its metabolites from circulation, so that in patients receiving regular hemodialysis, the manifestation of toxicity can be delayed.
CASE REPORT A 67-year-old woman with end-stage renal disease secondary to insulin-dependent type II diabetes on once-weekly hemodialysis presented to the Emergency Department via the Emergency Medical Service with acute encephalopathy, severe hypoglycemia, and hypothermia. …

Pathology Research and Scholarship
Children with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) tend to present with higher white blood counts and larger spleens than adults with CML, suggesting that the biology of pediatric and adult CML may differ. To investigate whether pediatric and adult CML have unique molecular characteristics, we studied the transcriptomic signature of pediatric and adult CML CD34+ cells and healthy pediatric and adult CD34+ control cells. Using high-throughput RNA sequencing, we found 567 genes (207 up- and 360 downregulated) differentially expressed in pediatric CML CD34+ cells compared to pediatric healthy CD34+ cells. Directly comparing pediatric and adult CML CD34+ cells, 398 genes (258 …

Comparison Of Methods To Estimate Ruminal Degradation And Intestinal Digestibility Of Protein In Hydrolyzed Feather Meal With Or Without Blood, Kassidy Buse, D. L. Morris, H. L. Diaz, O. R. Drehmel, Paul J. Kononoff
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Hydrolyzed feather meal (HFM) is a feedstuff high in rumen undegraded protein (RUP) that can be used as an effective source of metabolizable protein for dairy cattle. Because the production process may vary, the rumen degradability and intestinal digestibility of HFM may also vary. Additionally, some processes may incorporate additional blood into the final product to result in feather meal with poultry blood. To determine the rumen degradability and intestinal digestibility of these products, several laboratory assays can be used; the common assays are the mobile bag (MOB), modified three-step (MTS), and Ross (ROS) assays. Although all 3 assays determine …

Polatuzumab Vedotin In Previously Untreated Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma, Hervé Tilly, Neha Mehta-Shah, Et Al
Open Access Publications
BACKGROUND: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is typically treated with rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (R-CHOP). However, only 60% of patients are cured with R-CHOP. Polatuzumab vedotin is an antibody-drug conjugate targeting CD79b, which is ubiquitously expressed on the surface of malignant B cells.
METHODS: We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, international phase 3 trial to evaluate a modified regimen of R-CHOP (pola-R-CHP), in which vincristine was replaced with polatuzumab vedotin, as compared with standard R-CHOP, in patients with previously untreated intermediate-risk or high-risk DLBCL. Patients 18 to 80 years of age were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to …
