The Association Between Post-Stroke Delirium And Mortality Among Stroke Patients In Long-Term Facilities, Nuo Xu
All ETDs from UAB
Delirium is a common neurobehavioral complication following a stroke. Patients who have post-stroke delirium (PSD) are more likely to have severe prognoses, such as physical function decline, high mortality and an increased need for long-term care. Nursing home residents as one of the fragile and special populations sharing the attributes of old age, and high prevalence of chronic diseases and limited mobility. However, there only a few studies have investigated the association between PSD and mortality among individuals admitted to a long-term care facility. This retrospective cohort study aimed to examine the association between PSD and mortality among the participants …

Inconsistent Use Of Resistance Exercise Names In Research Articles: A Brief Note, James L. Nuzzo
Inconsistent Use Of Resistance Exercise Names In Research Articles: A Brief Note, James L. Nuzzo
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Academic fields require standard nomenclature to communicate concepts effectively. Previous research has documented resistance training exercises are named inconsistently. This inconsistent use has been observed among fitness professionals and within resistance training textbooks. The purpose of the current note was to explore inconsistent use of resistance training exercise names in scientific articles. Keyword searches were performed in PubMed to identify articles that referred to 4 different resistance training exercises. The search was limited to titles and abstracts of articles published between 1960 and 2020. For exercise 1, "shoulder press," "overhead press," and "military press" were searched. For exercise 2, "arm …
Effects Of An Educational Intervention On Students’ Knowledge And Attitude Towards Working With Older Adults, Johnna L. Kelley
Effects Of An Educational Intervention On Students’ Knowledge And Attitude Towards Working With Older Adults, Johnna L. Kelley
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Many individuals report reservations about working with an older adult population. A potential factor that may influence this is openness to experience. Additionally, research shows that educational interventions are effective in increasing individuals’ level of knowledge on various topics including older adults and aging. This increased level of knowledge contributes to a higher level of willingness to work with an older adult population. In order to support and extend the existing literature on this topic, we examined the effect of a short-term education session on undergraduate students’ willingness to work with older adults in a variety of positions and settings. …
Can Nurses Predict Transitions Of Care In Assisted Living?, Emma M. Blair
Can Nurses Predict Transitions Of Care In Assisted Living?, Emma M. Blair
Honors Theses and Capstones
The older adult population is rising exponentially due to medical advances and the aging of the Baby Boomer Population (Wister, 2005). Many of these older adults are choosing to live in assisted living facilities due to the increased independence and decreased cost of living compared to nursing homes (Grabowski, Stevenson, & Cornell, 2012). Since nurses are the primary directors of care for those in assisted living, the question was asked if they can predict a resident’s length of stay based on their knowledge and clinical judgement. A prospective study was performed at an assisted living facility in Oakland, California to …

Property Law For The Ages, Michael C. Pollack, Lior Jacob Strahilevitz
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Within the next forty years, the number of Americans over age sixty-five is projected to nearly double. This seismic demographic shift will necessitate a reckoning in several areas of law and policy, but property law is especially unprepared. Built primarily for young and middle-aged white men, the common law of property has been critiqued for decades for the ways in which it oppresses or simply leaves behind people based on their race, sex, Native heritage, and more. This Article contributes a new focus on property law’s treatment of people based on their advanced age. Burdened by higher relocation costs, more …

Identifying Occupational Therapy’S Role In The Interprofessional Team For Combating Barriers To Correct Medication Adherence For Older Adults, Megan Berginski, Bryce Graves, Christopher Hernandez
Critically Appraised Topics
Occupational therapy is crucial to the interprofessional team, with a focus on client-centered interventions, a holistic approach to health promotion and prevention and a comprehensive overlook on quality of life. The focus of occupational therapy is to collaborate with clients to find meaningful engagement in occupations to promote participation. The occupational therapist’s perspective on the person holistically marks their contribution to the interprofessional team in order to meet the needs to provide for the client, their families, and their community (Doll & Earland, 2020). Other than occupational therapists, the interdisciplinary team may consist of nurses, pharmacists and caregivers. Nurses are …
The Relationship Between Digit Ratio (2d:4d) And Muscular Fitness: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Brooke Pasanen
The Relationship Between Digit Ratio (2d:4d) And Muscular Fitness: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Brooke Pasanen
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Digit ratio (2D:4D), a marker of prenatal testosterone exposure, is a weak negative correlate of sports/athletic/fitness performance. While numerous studies have examined the relationship between 2D:4D and physical fitness, there has never been a comprehensive study that has synthesized studies examining relationships between 2D:4D and muscular fitness. Objectives: To systematically review and meta-analyze the relationship between 2D:4D and muscular fitness measured as handgrip strength (HGS). Methods: This study systematically searched five electronic databases, reference lists, topical systematic reviews/meta-analyses, and personal libraries in November 2020. Peer-reviewed, cross-sectional studies that reported Pearson’s correlation coefficients between objectively measured 2D:4D and HGS were …
Age Differences In Deliberate Ignorance., Ralph Hertwig, Jan K. Woike, Jürgen Schupp
Age Differences In Deliberate Ignorance., Ralph Hertwig, Jan K. Woike, Jürgen Schupp
School of Psychology
People sometimes choose to remain ignorant, even when information comes at low marginal costs and promises high utility. To investigate whether older adults enlist deliberate ignorance more than younger adults, potentially as an emotion-regulation tool, we presented a representative sample of 1,910 residents of Germany with 13 scenarios in which knowledge could result in substantial gains or losses. The strongest correlate of deliberate ignorance was indeed age. Openness to experience was negatively correlated with deliberate ignorance; risk preference did not and neuroticism did not consistently predict it. Findings suggest a possible positivity effect in the decision to access new but …

Promising Little Things To Strengthen Social Connections, Caitlin Coyle, Setarreh Massihzadegan
Center for Social and Demographic Research on Aging Publications
Unlike “best practices”, promising practices only require the successful implementation of a program or activity and some level of information that suggests a positive outcome for participants. One key advantage of using promising practices is that they can be adapted and there is flexibility in implementation styles and environments. As well, starting with a promising practice can help solve community problems, and save the trouble of reinventing the wheel. If someone has already found an effective way to resolve an issue or advance the cause, it makes sense to use it. The intention of this document is to alert those …
Il-1r1 Deficiency Impairs Liver Regeneration After 2/3 Partial Hepatectomy In Aged Mice, Deming Li, Ze Wang, Chunyan Zhang, Cunshuan Xu
Il-1r1 Deficiency Impairs Liver Regeneration After 2/3 Partial Hepatectomy In Aged Mice, Deming Li, Ze Wang, Chunyan Zhang, Cunshuan Xu
Turkish Journal of Biology
Inflammation has a dual effect: it can protect the body and destroy tissue and cell as well. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the role of IL-1R1 in liver regeneration (LR) after partial hepatectomy (PH) in aged mice. The wild-type (WT, n = 36) and the IL-1R1 knockout (KO, n = 36) 24-month-old C57BL/6J mice underwent two-thirds PH; 33 WT mice underwent sham operation. Liver coefficient was calculated by liver/body weight. The mRNA and protein expressions of genes were evaluated by quantitative realtime polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blotting methods, respectively. Compared with WT mice, liver coefficient …
How Women Who Have Recidivated Describe Their Readiness For Employment After Release From Prison, Simba Kathleen Fox
How Women Who Have Recidivated Describe Their Readiness For Employment After Release From Prison, Simba Kathleen Fox
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Since the 1980s, the population of women prisoners incarcerated in the state of California had significantly increased by 500% more than that of the male prisoners. The United States had more incarcerated women than any other country. Along with this alarming rise in female incarceration, recidivism rates were also higher among female inmates. This problem has negatively affected women in California; whereas 57% of the women released from prison were rearrested within three to seven years. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research study was to investigate how 18 women who had recidivated with the same or a different criminal …

The Importance Of Understanding Functionality In Home- And Community-Based Care And The Impact On Costs As America Ages, Shannon Stanley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The United States is on a trajectory to reach 20% of citizens aged 65 and over by 2030. This hyper-aging population affects the costs of healthcare, but it is not adequately represented in current U.S. models. Studies indicate other hyper-aged nations have experienced this increase and implemented long-term care measures to counter the increase in aging populations and costs with system responsiveness. This study examined the role of Medicaid home -and community- based service (HCBS) contributions in states that have the fastest-aging populations. Using the established framework and data collected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, the study looked …

Psychosocial Factors And Physical Health In Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients, Olulana Bamiro
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The research problem identified was poor physical health in older adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The problem is important because poor physical health yields unsuccessful aging. The current research aimed to identify psychosocial factors that improve self-evaluated physical health in the study population as a proxy to overall health; the research questions helped identify these factors. The first research question assessed the association between health locus of control and self-evaluated physical health. The second research question evaluated the association between family support and self-evaluated physical health. A final research question assessed the association between health locus of control, …
Efficacy Of The Combination Of Mirabegron And Solifenacin Compared To Standard Of Care Of Monotherapy In Controlling Urinary Incontinence Symptoms In Adults Diagnosed With Overactive Bladder, Krista Trinidad
Capstone Showcase
Introduction: Overactive bladder is a condition where the bladder muscles contract before the bladder is full, causing the urge to urinate. People with overactive bladder, or urge incontinence, have intense urges to urinate as a result of various disorders or injuries, including detrusor overactivity, neurologic disorder or spinal cord injury. The standard first- line medication for overactive bladder is solifenacin, and mirabegron serves as an alternative option. Solifenacin is an anticholinergic medication that is associated with a wide range of undesirable side effects. Therefore, this review analyzes the use of a combination of mirabegron and solifenacin, compared to monotherapy with …

Caregiver Knowledge And Perceptions Of Dementia-Specific Nutritional Approaches, Danielle Freitag
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Dementia is a syndrome that affects millions worldwide. The syndrome can cause great distress not only for the diagnosed individual but also for the family and friends who provide care. It is known that many caregivers for people with dementia face difficulties in planning and preparing meals, feeding, and making nutritional decisions for their loved ones. Several diets have been shown to assist with dementia-related symptoms pre and post diagnosis. However, what is unknown is whether caregivers are aware of the benefits of these diets and what the barriers are to implementing them into their nutrition regime. This study surveyed …
The Effects Of Increasing Positively Charged Metal Ions Within Synovial Fluid, Kandisi Anyabwile
The Effects Of Increasing Positively Charged Metal Ions Within Synovial Fluid, Kandisi Anyabwile
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that affects 10% of men and 13% of women over age of 60. It is the degradation of the cartilage between two bones; obesity, age, overuse, or injury are major contributors to the development of this disease. The joint is incapsulated by the synovial sac filled with a viscous solution that aids in lubrication referred to as synovial fluid. If the synovial sac is ruptured due to injury, positive ions (K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Fe3+) may affect viscoelastic properties within the sac. The purpose of this …
Effects Of Weather, Parental Behavioral Plasticity, And Life History Traits On Offspring Growth, Development, And Energy Expenditure In Songbirds, Adam Elliot Mitchell
Effects Of Weather, Parental Behavioral Plasticity, And Life History Traits On Offspring Growth, Development, And Energy Expenditure In Songbirds, Adam Elliot Mitchell
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Weather creates energetic and survival challenges for organisms that can influence demography. Harsh weather often causes increased energy expenditure in adults, but how weather affects other life stages is less well understood. Juveniles are especially vulnerable because they must use energy to survive weather effects and maintain growth and development while having poorly developed thermoregulatory capabilities. Juveniles that spend energy overcoming harsh weather can have delayed growth and maturation, which can negatively affect competitive abilities, survival, and lifetime fitness. Understanding weather effects on offspring is particularly challenging in altricial species because parents have evolved strategies to ameliorate such effects. However, …

The Effects Of Music Therapy On Older Adults With Dementia: A Systematic Review, Sydney Swogger, Kahli Throckmorton
The Effects Of Music Therapy On Older Adults With Dementia: A Systematic Review, Sydney Swogger, Kahli Throckmorton
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Older adults with dementia experience difficulties throughout the progression of the disease, including decreased quality of life and mental health (Weise et al., 2018). Nonpharmacological interventions, such as music therapy and music listening, may be one solution to affect mental health outcomes in this population. The two authors seek to answer the following PICOT formatted question: In older adults, ages 65 and older, with dementia, how does music therapy, compared with treatment as usual, affect depression and anxiety? Twenty primary sources, published from 2014 to 2019, were reviewed and critically appraised. The sources were diverse with regards to country of …
Can Nostalgia Defend Against Stereotype Threat?, Justin Leroy Thibault-Anderson
Can Nostalgia Defend Against Stereotype Threat?, Justin Leroy Thibault-Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Stereotype threat causes individuals to perform worse on tasks when they are made aware of a task-relevant negative stereotype for a group to which they belong. Prior research has demonstrated that this effect has been alleviated by using a number of methods including changing test context or bolstering the stereotyped group. One method of bolstering the threatened group is through a self-affirmation of preferred character traits. Nostalgia is a sentimental longing for the past, which has been shown to provide many benefits to an individual, both personally and socially. Research has shown that when told to recall a nostalgic memory, …

Stripped Of Funds, Stripped Of Rights: A Critique Of Guardianship As A Remedy For Elder Financial Harm, Rebekah Diller, Leslie Salzman
Articles
There is a growing consensus in the United States and abroad recognizing the right to “legal capacity”—the right to make legally binding decisions for oneself—as a basic human right. Despite this recognition, adult guardianship—the state court procedure by which a person is declared incapacitated and stripped of decision-making rights—remains a widely used tool, particularly for older adults who have suffered financial exploitation or loss. For this population, guardianship is considered an unpleasant yet necessary remedy to address their financial harms. But what if the cure does not really work as intended, while other, less intrusive means could prevent and redress …
