Worldwide, there are millions of people who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, a bone disease that increases the risk of fracture due to low bone mineral density and deterioration of bone architecture. In the US alone, there are approximately ten million men and women diagnosed with osteoporosis and this number is still growing. Diagnosis is made by measuring bone mineral density. Medications used for the treatment of osteoporosis are bisphosphonates, denosumab, raloxifene, and teriparatide. Recently, romosozumab has been added as well. In recent years, a number of advances have been made in the field of diagnostic methods and the diverse …

From Boring To Board Game: The Effect Of A Serious Game On Key Learning Outcomes, Kendal L. Booker, Anita W. Mitchell
From Boring To Board Game: The Effect Of A Serious Game On Key Learning Outcomes, Kendal L. Booker, Anita W. Mitchell
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Serious games incorporate learning objectives in the context of competitive games with rules. These types of games have been incorporated in education as well as therapeutic contexts. This study examined the effectiveness of a modification of the game “Snakes and Ladders,” for reviewing and learning qualitative research concepts. Using the Game-based Evaluation Model (GEM), the researchers also measured learning indicators such as interest and enjoyment, perceived competence, effort and importance, and value/usefulness. Thirty-eight Master of Occupational Therapy students completed a 25-question multiple choice pretest to measure knowledge of qualitative research concepts before playing the game. A 25-question multiple choice posttest …
Developing A Conceptual Framework For Occupational Therapy Fellowship Programs: A Qualitative Content Analysis Study, Marcelo A. Silva
Developing A Conceptual Framework For Occupational Therapy Fellowship Programs: A Qualitative Content Analysis Study, Marcelo A. Silva
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Today’s health care environment calls for quality-care, the efficiency of services, a decrease in waste, and an increase in desired outcomes. This necessitates that occupational therapy (OT) practitioners engage in continuous professional development activities (i.e., continuing education, post-professional training) and lifelong learning to enhance their critical thinking and clinical reasoning. One way that OT practitioners can advance their clinical practice skills is through participating in OT fellowship programs, which are post-professional training programs aimed to advance one’s knowledge and skills in focused areas of practice. Using theory to guide practice is also essential for OT practitioners as they make evidence-based …

The Effect Of Visual Feedback On Lumbar Spinal Mobility In Subjects With Low Back Pain, Alexandra Adams, Averi Donaldson, Katherine Hildebrandt, Philemon Miller
Clinical Sciences: Graduate Physical Therapy Capstone Projects (2008-2021)
Purpose: This study was designed to determine if visual feedback via a laser pointer would enhance quality of lumbar mobility exercise in quadruped. A secondary aim of this study was to compare mobility assessed using the valid and reliable Modified-Modified Schober Test (MMST) to mobility measured indirectly using the laser pointer.
Subjects: 69
Methods: Adult participants with no low back pain (LBP) in the previous year or back surgery were randomly assigned to one of three groups for two sessions: Control (blindfolded during both), Intervention A (blindfolded then visual feedback), or Intervention B (visual feedback then blindfolded). Baseline standing lumbar …
Staff Education On Medication Screening Tool For Nursing Home Residents, Jinkee Sarah Beltran
Staff Education On Medication Screening Tool For Nursing Home Residents, Jinkee Sarah Beltran
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) among nursing home residents continues to be high. Researchers have demonstrated that the use of a medication screening tool identifying PIMs can improve medication safety among older adults. Screening tools, such as the Beers criteria and the Screening Tool for Older Persons’ Prescriptions (STOPP), are evidence-based guidelines that use several validated criteria to identify PIMs in older adults’ medication regimens. While the use of these tools is standard in the acute care setting, limited studies have been conducted regarding their use in the nursing home setting. The purpose of this project was to …
Content Analysis Of Ethics Curriculum Requirements In Undergraduate Social Work Programs, Debra Evonne Thrower
Content Analysis Of Ethics Curriculum Requirements In Undergraduate Social Work Programs, Debra Evonne Thrower
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Due to recent mandates of the 2015 Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Educational Policies and Accreditation Standards, social work ethics education has received considerable attention. These standards have increased the focus on ethical education requirements in bachelor’s and master’s curricula. However, research regarding approaches that undergraduate institutions use to implement the required content remains limited. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine ethics education requirements in the syllabi from practice courses at CSWE-accredited undergraduate social work programs. Common morality theory and curriculum theory were theoretical frameworks that guided examination of the phenomenon. Data were collected from 51 …
From Social Alienation To Physical Health Concerns: Depression And Alcohol Proneness As Disconnection Pathways, Benjamin F. Shepherd, Paula M. Brochu
From Social Alienation To Physical Health Concerns: Depression And Alcohol Proneness As Disconnection Pathways, Benjamin F. Shepherd, Paula M. Brochu
Archives of Assessment Psychology
It is well established that social isolation is a robust predictor of poor health outcomes, both mental and physical, yet little is known about whether and how personality characteristics related to social isolation (e.g., social alienation) affect health. Grounded in relational-cultural theory, the present study examined depression and alcohol proneness as parallel mechanisms underlying the association between social alienation and physical health concerns. As hypothesized, social alienation was positively associated with depression and alcohol proneness, and depression and alcohol proneness were both positively associated with health concerns. Notably, social alienation was indirectly associated with health concerns through depression for both …
Satisfaction Of Telehealth For The 55+ Population, Cynthia Schweizer
Satisfaction Of Telehealth For The 55+ Population, Cynthia Schweizer
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
There is a primary care need for the 55+-year-old population related to the increasing aging population, physician shortages, and, more recently, Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) to implement Telehealth care. The Telehealth project will include the 55+ population to provide more participants for the project at an internal medicine clinic. Telehealth's contribution and interventions will affect causal factors such as moderating or mediating factors of health problems. Some of those factors include insufficient primary care coverage due to decreasing numbers of primary care providers (PCP), the increasing older population, complex health issues that come with aging, the need for frequent follow-up …

A Multi-Client Simulation To Improve Communication, Prioritization, And Clinical Judgment Among Nursing Students, Adam K. Combs
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Hospital administrators have noted a lack of clinical judgment in novice nurses, which can result in negative client outcomes. This paper describes the implementation of a multi-client simulation experience with the purpose of determining if the experience improved communication, prioritization, and clinical judgment.
Method: A descriptive, pretest postest study, using the National League for Nursing (NLN) Jeffries Simulation Theory, examined the perceived competence of 37 senior level Associate Degree Nursing students.
Intervention: The participants rated their perceived competence on the Perceived Competence Scale and were scored on the ISBAR Interprofessional Communication Rubric (IICR) and the Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric …

Prescription Labels: Get To Know Them, Karen Adams
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Low health literacy is a problem for millions of Americans resulting in increased use of healthcare resources resulting in poor health outcomes. The older adult population is continuing to grow and is the largest user of healthcare. Use of pharmaceutical regimens to manage chronic illnesses is the most commonly used treatment modality. Unfortunately, people with low health literacy may have trouble understanding and following their providers instructions. It can be difficult to read directions on over the counter and prescription medication bottles. Community-based health educational programs benefit the maintenance of older adult health. The purpose of this project was to …
Where Are The Children? An Autoethnography Of Deception In Dementia In An Acute Hospital, G Hodge
Where Are The Children? An Autoethnography Of Deception In Dementia In An Acute Hospital, G Hodge
School of Nursing and Midwifery
An acute hospital environment is a confusing place for many patients requiring admission, especially when they are presenting as acutely unwell. This can be particularly difficult for people living with dementia. As cognition changes it is not uncommon for people living with dementia to have difficulties with their ability to orientate to time, place and person. These disorientating moments can lead to personal distress, and at times behavioural changes. As well as being distressing for the person living with dementia, it can also be emotionally and ethically challenging for acute hospital staff; including nurses. One area found to be particularly …

The Role Of Economic Factors Affecting Thai Older Persons’ Life Satisfaction., Daria Turavinina
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
An aging population is one of the significant demographic issues affecting the world. As Thailand is moving closer to being considered a super-aged society, major policy reforms must be made to prepare for this transition. Economic factors have long been established as one of the factors contributing to elderly life satisfaction. As the aging population is becoming an ever-increasing and more relevant phenomenon, policymakers' goals are shifting to accommodate the sociopolitical changes that will come with the demographic developments. This independent study examines a sample of n=4716 Thai elderly. The statistical techniques used in this study are Linear Regression and …

Supporting Families Of Patients With Dementia At End-Of-Life In Hospital, Felicity Moon, Fiona Mcdermott, David Kissane
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Introduction: There are barriers to implementing person-and family-centred end-of-life care for people with dementia in hospitals. Nursing care for people with dementia is enhanced through family involvement. However, families report unmet needs during admissions contributing to distress and dissatisfaction. Furthermore, little is known about families’ needs during end-of-life care for people with dementia in hospital.
Aim: This study examined perceptions of interpersonal care during end-of-life for patients with dementia.
Methods: This research used a qualitative approach framed through a social constructionist and complex systems theoretical frameworks. Hospital clinicians (n = 20) and bereaved family members (n = 12) of deceased …

Mental State Of Demoralisation Across Diverse Clinical Settings: A Systematic Review, Meta-Analysis And Proposal For Its Use As A ‘Specifier’ In Mental Illness, Lucy L. Gan, Susanna Gong, David W. Kissane
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Objective: Demoralisation is a state of poor coping characterised by low morale, hopelessness, subjective incompetence, and loss of meaning and purpose in life. While studied extensively in oncology and palliative care, there has been recent exploration in broader medical and mental health settings. The aim was to investigate the prevalence of demoralisation and associated sociodemographic and psychological factors across these clinical settings.
Method: Six electronic databases were used to locate articles from January 2014 to March 2020. A pre-publication update of non-oncology populations was completed in September 2021. The review has been reported following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews …
Rheological Analysis Of The Mechanical Properties Of Murine Lungs Over The Lifespan, Olajumoke Olufunke Harrison
Rheological Analysis Of The Mechanical Properties Of Murine Lungs Over The Lifespan, Olajumoke Olufunke Harrison
Theses and Dissertations
To study the effects of aging in murine lungs, we characterized C57Bl6j mice from neonatal to 24-month-old mice. Samples were divided into two groups: Young Mice (YM) and Middle Age/Old Age Mice (MOM). The YM group included the neonatal and 6-10week. The MOM group included 7- and 22–24-month-old mice. Rheological testing was performed using a TA Instruments DHR-2 Rheometer to collect the mechanics of each mice sample. Utilizing a 20-mm parallel plate fixture, a gap of 0.8-1.0-mm, and a temperature setting of 25C, we conducted a frequency sweep. Samples were the decellularized over a four-day process then lyophilized for mass …
Socio-Ecological Predictors Of Social Connection Among Older Adults, Georganna Amateau
Socio-Ecological Predictors Of Social Connection Among Older Adults, Georganna Amateau
Theses and Dissertations
Decades of research has established an unequivocal link between states of social connection and health status. Lack of social connection, whether construed as social isolation or loneliness, negatively influences health and is highly associated with cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, fall risk, and premature death. Despite extensive research on social isolation and loneliness, evidence relative to the broader construct of social connection suffers. Few studies inform practice standards for community-based organizations. This study aimed to develop a multidimensional, continuous composite variable of social connection and use the composite variable to examine predictors with a socio-ecological lens.

Feeling The Squeeze: The Association Between Multigeneration Caregiving And Informal Caregivers’ Health, Christine L. Patterson
Feeling The Squeeze: The Association Between Multigeneration Caregiving And Informal Caregivers’ Health, Christine L. Patterson
Theses and Dissertations
While U.S. public policy and research has focused on the health needs of the aging population, less attention has been given to the consequences informal caregivers face caring for this generation. With the segment of the population aged 65 years or older growing rapidly, it is important to understand the factors that place informal caregivers at risk for poor health outcomes and health behaviors. Since multigeneration caregivers balance more personal, work, and caregiving demands than single-generation informal caregivers of older adults, they may be at higher risk for poor health outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine the …

Reliability And Validity Of Three Clinical Methods To Measure Lower Extremity Muscle Power, Mattie E. Pontiff, Li Li, Noelle G. Moreau
Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications
Background: Lower extremity muscle power is critical for daily activities and athletic performance in clinical populations. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of 3 clinically feasible methods to measure lower extremity muscle power during a leg press. Methods: Ten of 26 subjects performed 2 sessions of 5 submaximal leg presses separated by 3-7 days in this repeated-measures cross-sectional design; the remaining performed 1 test session. Power was calculated independently for each method [simple video, linear position transducer, and accelerometer] and compared to the reference force plate. Test-retest reliability was evaluated using intraclass correlation …
