College of Natural and Applied Sciences

The hydrologic sciences and water resources management have long depended on a combination of in situ measurements and remotely sensed data for research and regulatory purposes. In situ measurements are constrained in their spatial distribution by both logistics and costs. Satellite- and manned aircraft-based remote sensing provide spatially broad data, but often of a coarse resolution. Furthermore, all these data collection methods are often limited in their ability to respond to specific short-term events when the data and imagery could inform real-time assessment and decision-making, especially during and immediately after natural disasters. Researchers and regulators are increasingly using unmanned aerial …

(Non)Parallel Developmental Mechanisms In Vertebrate Appendage Reduction And Loss, Samantha Swank, Thomas Sanger, Yoel E. Stuart Nov 2021

(Non)Parallel Developmental Mechanisms In Vertebrate Appendage Reduction And Loss, Samantha Swank, Thomas Sanger, Yoel E. Stuart

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Appendages have been reduced or lost hundreds of times during vertebrate evolution. This phenotypic convergence may be underlain by shared or different molecular mechanisms in distantly related vertebrate clades. To investigate, we reviewed the developmental and evolutionary literature of appendage reduction and loss in more than a dozen vertebrate genera from fish to mammals. We found that appendage reduction and loss was nearly always driven by modified gene expression as opposed to changes in coding sequences. Moreover, expression of the same genes was repeatedly modified across vertebrate taxa. However, the specific mechanisms by which expression was modified were rarely shared. …

Ict And Economic Empowerment: Analysing How Youth In Tanzania Use Social Media To Facilitate Income-Generation Activities, David J. Manyerere Nov 2021

Ict And Economic Empowerment: Analysing How Youth In Tanzania Use Social Media To Facilitate Income-Generation Activities, David J. Manyerere

Business Management Review

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has globally played a significant role in facilitating communication that assists various socio-economic undertakings. It presents an opportunity, especially to the youth in Africa, to utilise social media (SM) and contribute to attaining Sustainable Development Goals No 1 and No. 8, such as eradicating poverty and creating decent work. However, this may only happen if SM platforms are utilised appropriately. Hence, this article examined the uptake of ICT in the form of SM in facilitating Income Generating Activities (IGAs) undertaken by youth in Dar es Salaam Tanzania for self-economic empowerment. A total of 46 respondents …

Endogenous Spatial Production Networks: Quantitative Implications For Trade & Productivity, Piyush Panigrahi Nov 2021

Endogenous Spatial Production Networks: Quantitative Implications For Trade & Productivity, Piyush Panigrahi

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Larger Indian firms selling inputs to other firms tend to have more customers, tend to be used more intensively by their customers, and tend to have larger customers. Motivated by these regularities, I propose a novel empirical model of trade featuring endogenous formation of input-output linkages between spatially distant firms. The empirical model consists of (a) a theoretical framework that accommodates first order features of firm-to-firm network data, (b) a maximum likelihood framework for structural estimation that is uninhibited by the scale of data, and (c) a procedure for counterfactual analysis that speaks to the effects of micro- and macro- …

Where Does Sustainability Stand In Underground Tourism? A Literature Review, Piera Buonincontri, Roberto Micera, María Murillo-Romero, Tommasina Pianese Nov 2021

Where Does Sustainability Stand In Underground Tourism? A Literature Review, Piera Buonincontri, Roberto Micera, María Murillo-Romero, Tommasina Pianese

KIP Articles

Underground sites have become an attractive tourist destination for an increasing number of visitors. This flow of visitors has made sustainability a major issue, that is, the way in which tourism development ensures economic benefits for host communities and respects local identity without compromising the environmental resources. Many studies have explored sustainable tourism in the Underground Built Heritage (UBH), but privilege the analysis of a single perspective, that is, economic sustainability, e.g., potentialities of cultural routes, or environmental sustainability, such as the impact of visitors on the cave climate. However, some attention has been paid to the social implications of …

Challenges For Estimating The Global Prevalence Of Micronutrient Deficiencies And Related Disease Burden: A Case Study Of The Global Burden Of Disease Study, Sonja Y. Hess, Alexander C. Mclain, Edward A. Frongillo Jr., Ashkan Afshin, Nicholas J. Kassebaum, Saskia J. Osendarp, Reed Atkin, Rahul Rawat, Kenneth H. Brown

Faculty Publications

Information on the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies is needed to determine related disease burden; underpin evidence-based advocacy; and design, deliver, and monitor safe, effective interventions. Assessing the global prevalence of deficiency requires a valid micronutrient status biomarker with an appropriate cutoff to define deficiency and relevant data from representative surveys across multiple locations and years. The Global Burden of Disease Study includes prevalence estimates for iodine, iron, zinc, and vitamin A deficiencies, for which recommended biomarkers and appropriate deficiency cutoffs exist. Because representative survey data are lacking, only retinol concentration is used to model vitamin A deficiency, and proxy indicators …

30-Year Record Of Himalaya Mass-Wasting Reveals Landscape Perturbations By Extreme Events, Joshua N. Jones, Sarah J. Boulton, Martin Stokes, Georgina L. Bennett, Michael R.Z. Whitworth Nov 2021

30-Year Record Of Himalaya Mass-Wasting Reveals Landscape Perturbations By Extreme Events, Joshua N. Jones, Sarah J. Boulton, Martin Stokes, Georgina L. Bennett, Michael R.Z. Whitworth

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In mountainous environments, quantifying the drivers of mass-wasting is fundamental for understanding landscape evolution and improving hazard management. Here, we quantify the magnitudes of mass-wasting caused by the Asia Summer Monsoon, extreme rainfall, and earthquakes in the Nepal Himalaya. Using a newly compiled 30-year mass-wasting inventory, we establish empirical relationships between monsoon-triggered mass-wasting and monsoon precipitation, before quantifying how other mass-wasting drivers perturb this relationship. We find that perturbations up to 5 times greater than that expected from the monsoon alone are caused by rainfall events with 5-to-30-year return periods and short-term (< 2 year) earthquake-induced landscape preconditioning. In 2015, the landscape preconditioning is strongly controlled by the topographic signature of the Gorkha earthquake, whereby high Peak Ground Accelerations coincident with high excess topography (rock volume above a landscape threshold angle) amplifies landscape damage. Furthermore, earlier earthquakes in 1934, 1988 and 2011 are not found to influence 2015 mass-wasting.

Empowering The Human-Nature Bond, Lightning Talk (7 Min), Valeria Widjaja

GIS Day

What is land? Is it dirt, the Earth, property, a resource? But rarely we ask who is land? When we change the question, it changes the way we think about land. It transforms the way we make decisions about how we might protect land. Through the Deshkan Ziibi Conservation Impact Bond, this story map explores how Carolinian Canada, Chippewas of the Thames First Nations, VERGE Capital, Ivey Business School, Thames Talbot Land Trust, and 3M are striving to heal the landscape. Overall, this story map visualizes both the human-nature and human-human relationships being facilitated by the bond. Learn the about …

« Squilli Di Gloria Nel Sole Di Napoli »: Le Pavillon L’Albania Nella Civiltà Mediterranea De La Prima Mostra Triennale Delle Terre Italiane D’Oltremare À Naples (1940), Alessandro Gallicchio

Artl@s Bulletin

L’Accent Sur Le Local : Modernisme Et Régionalisme Dans L’Art Grec De L’Entre-Deux-Guerres, Christina Dimakopoulou

Artl@s Bulletin

In 1919 a group of Greek modernist artists under the name “Groupe Tekhni” was presented to the Parisian public through a collective exhibition aiming at proving the synchronized status and the international scope of Greek contemporary art. Against all the ambitions, the exhibition did not meet the expectations of French critics who were searching vainly in the work of Greek artists for a certain accent local, typical of the region of oriental Mediterranean. This paper investigates the way in which the concept of accent local, proposed by the French critics, was interpreted in the Greek art of the …

Disclosing The Ultimate Mediterranean Cubist Village. Place, Identity And Politics In Eduardo Viana’S Olhão Landscapes, Joana Cunha Leal Nov 2021

Disclosing The Ultimate Mediterranean Cubist Village. Place, Identity And Politics In Eduardo Viana’S Olhão Landscapes, Joana Cunha Leal

Artl@s Bulletin

This article studies the early 1920s Olhão views painted by Eduardo Viana (1881–1967). It analyzes Viana’s turn to Algarvian-Mediterranean landscapes, while considering the emergence of Olhão as the Portuguese “cubist village” rendered just before its regionalization by the fascist cultural industry. I contend that Viana’s vistas stem from his cosmopolitan profile and earlier avant-garde experiences, suggesting also that Olhão’s Mediterranean “cubist”-built environment offered Viana the prospect of a denationalized geography. The relationship between identity, place and politics will therefore be discussed.

L'Invention Artistique De La Méditerranée: Quelques Repères, Rossella Froissart Nov 2021

L'Invention Artistique De La Méditerranée: Quelques Repères, Rossella Froissart

Artl@s Bulletin

Demographic Change In The North Atlanta Metro Area, Zachary Lloyd Nov 2021

Demographic Change In The North Atlanta Metro Area, Zachary Lloyd

Symposium of Student Scholars

The northern Atlanta suburbs are perhaps the premiere destination for migrants, both domestic and international, into the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. Filled with activities, good schools, and endless dining options, these communities are not only relatively safe to raise a family in, but also offer plenty to do for married couples and retirees. The counties of Gwinnett and Cobb, along with the northern portion of Fulton County (known as North Fulton) are the traditional northside suburban destinations, but growth there has slowed because much of the land is now densely developed. Predictably, the suburbs have extended northward through the counties of …

Derek Romanek (Uli Ingram), Department of Geography and Anthropology, Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, GA, 30144

The Atlanta region is one of the fastest growing regions in the United States of America. With a growing population there is an increase in the demand for resources including food. Food security is a global issue and does not only effect developing nations. To improve sustainability the United Nations came up with 17 Sustainable Development goals. To better understand what we can do to improve sustainability and meet the …

Measuring The Capacity To Combat Illicit Tobacco Trade In 160 Countries, Valerie Gilbert T. Ulep, Monica Paula Lavares, Ariza Francisco

Ateneo School of Government Publications

Background

Illicit trade of tobacco negatively affects countries’ tobacco control efforts. It leads to lower tobacco prices and makes tobacco products more accessible to vulnerable populations. In this study, we constructed an illicit tobacco trade index, which measures the structural and institutional capabilities of 160 countries in addressing illicit tobacco trade. We collected the most recent and best available data on general governance, tobacco control policies, and trade and customs practices.

Results

Singapore, New Zealand, Finland and Sweden lead countries with the most favorable illicit tobacco trade score. We observed a positive relationship between illicit tobacco trade scores and Gross …

Spatial-Temporal Modeling Of Agricultural Water Surface Features In Northeastern Arkansas., Daniel Dewayne Shults Nov 2021

Spatial-Temporal Modeling Of Agricultural Water Surface Features In Northeastern Arkansas., Daniel Dewayne Shults

Student Theses and Dissertations

The Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer (MRVA) has been the primary source of irrigation water in Northeastern Arkansas since the early 1900s. Over time the MRVA water level has declined due to over-pumping of farm wells and water restrictive geology. The aquifer is expected to continue declining but with water conservation strategies in place, this vital resource could be preserved for future farmers. This thesis investigated using remotely sensed data to assess landforms associated with agricultural water conservation across Northeastern Arkansas. The remotely sensed data proved to be useful at creating temporal assessments of pre-existing irrigation reservoirs, identifying new irrigation …

The Grand Strategic Thought Of Colin S. Gray, Lukas Milevski Nov 2021

The Grand Strategic Thought Of Colin S. Gray, Lukas Milevski

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Colin S. Gray distinguished himself from other scholars in the field of strategic studies with his belief that grand strategy is indispensable, complex, and inherently agential. This article identifies key themes, continuities, conceptual relationships, and potential discontinuities from his decades of grand strategic thought. Gray’s statement that “all strategy is grand strategy” remains highly relevant today, emphasizing the importance of agential context in military environments—a point often neglected in strategic practice.

Sherman And His Historians: An End To The Outsized Destroyer Myth?, Mitchell G. Klingenberg

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

For years, scholars have viewed the career of William Tecumseh Sherman in light of an antiquated destroyer myth and neglected his memoirs, which were written as a military textbook. This essay reviews Sherman’s legacy and literature, both of which contributed to the advancement of modern military thought. His experiences may serve as a prescriptive text to servicemembers, providing critical lessons on military warfare and philosophy still relevant today.

The Air Littoral: Another Look, Maximilian K. Bremer, Kelly A. Grieco Nov 2021

The Air Littoral: Another Look, Maximilian K. Bremer, Kelly A. Grieco

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Assessing threats to the air littoral, the airspace between ground forces and high-end fighters and bombers, requires a paradigm change in American military thinking about verticality. This article explores the consequences of domain convergence, specifically for the Army and Air Force’s different concepts of control. It will assist US military and policy practitioners in conceptualizing the air littoral and in thinking more vertically about the air and land domains and the challenges of domain convergence.
