Secondary Educator Experiences Using Social Media To Influence Students’ Empowerment Skills, Jacqueline Mary Roehl
Secondary Educator Experiences Using Social Media To Influence Students’ Empowerment Skills, Jacqueline Mary Roehl
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social media is a sociopolitical phenomenon with the potential to impact people’s psychological empowerment. The problem is that little is known about the experiences of secondary educators who teach students to use social media in empowering ways for social change. The purpose of this study was to explore secondary educator experiences using social media to influence students’ psychological empowerment skills to understand diverse opinions about community issues and proactively work for social change. This study’s conceptual framework was connectivist theory that learning occurs through online connections and the psychological empowerment principle that people feel in more control when they understand …
Predictors Of Obesity Among Young Adults In The State Of Maryland, Kala Shahi
Predictors Of Obesity Among Young Adults In The State Of Maryland, Kala Shahi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractObesity has become a global wellness concern for young adults. In the past, there were very few studies conducted on predictors of obesity among young adults, even though there have been several studies on the potential predictors of obesity on the general population. The social ecological model was used to guide this quantitative cross-sectional study to identify the possible predictors of obesity among young adults. The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System was used to analyze the potential predictors of obesity among young adults between the ages 18 – 34 years old in Montgomery County, Frederick County, and Princess Georges County, …
Supporting The Teaching Of Executive Functioning Skills Using Social Cognitive Theory In Arts Classrooms, Kathleen H. Adolt-Silva
Supporting The Teaching Of Executive Functioning Skills Using Social Cognitive Theory In Arts Classrooms, Kathleen H. Adolt-Silva
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many arts educators in Pennsylvania public charter schools do not teach executive functioning (EF) skills to students with learning disabilities (LDs) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The purpose of this study was to investigate how these art teachers describe their own EF instructional practices and what support they need to improve those practices. The conceptual framework that grounded this study was Bandura’s social cognitive theory, which asserts that learning occurs in a social context with a reciprocal relationship between students, their teachers, and the environment. Research questions were used to explore art teachers’ perceptions of teaching EF skills and …
The Preparedness Of Suffolk County’S Emergency Managers For Drinking Water Disruptions, Richard Rotanz
The Preparedness Of Suffolk County’S Emergency Managers For Drinking Water Disruptions, Richard Rotanz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractFor many years, a chronic issue within Suffolk County, New York, one of the most populated counties in the country, is the deterioration of its drinking water along with its polluted beaches, lakes, and rivers, which are imperative for tourism and the fishing industry. However, little is known regarding the awareness of, and the preparedness towards, any disruptions of drinking water by the community of emergency managers. Narrowing this gap of knowledge was the purpose of this study. The research question examined the knowledge of, the attitudes, and the preparedness levels of the emergency management community of Suffolk County involving …
The Use Of Vocational Services By Formerly Incarcerated Citizens Who Obtained Employment, Marianne Gonta
The Use Of Vocational Services By Formerly Incarcerated Citizens Who Obtained Employment, Marianne Gonta
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Almost 2.3 million people are incarcerated in correctional facilities across the United States. More than 95% of this population will be released to return to society at some time. People returning from prison can be at a disadvantage as they compete for work. They might be challenged by known barriers to employment, like restrictions on work opportunities and powerful stigma, resulting in a social problem. While some correctional facilities provide vocational services, 75% or more of citizens returning to U.S. communities from prison cannot obtain sustainable wage employment. Yet, it appears there is little research illuminating the pathways used by …
Graduates’ Perception Of History Education In Jamaican High Schools, Patricia Cecile Edwards
Graduates’ Perception Of History Education In Jamaican High Schools, Patricia Cecile Edwards
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractResearchers have shown that history education is valuable, but it is not a popular subject of choice among secondary and postsecondary students in several parts of the world. In Jamaica, fewer students have taken the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination in history education in the decade beginning in 2010 than in the decade before. The threefold purpose of this basic qualitative study was to investigate the perception of graduates of Jamaican high schools about what influenced their decision when they selected or deselected history education at the CSEC examination level, what career decision making factors they perceived influenced their …

Young Adults’ Community Trust And Participation In A Community Service Center In Indonesia, Adhytiawarman Gautama Putra
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the field of national security, Indonesia has community service centers known as the community police communication forum, or FKPM, an informal institution formed by community members to assist the police in implementing community policing (CP). FKPM can be found in various regions of Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to obtain the opinions of young adult members about FKPM regarding their trust and participation in FKPM activities. Fifteen active FKPM members participated in telephone interviews. The results showed that the young adults in this study believed in FKPM but lacked information about FKPM programs and activities in their …
Improving The Educational Experience Of Trauma-Impacted Students: Identifying Emerging Best Practices For Teaching Low-Socioeconomic Status Urban Students, Regina Lane
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative action research concentrates on examining the best practices for teachers in trauma-informed practices by producing an implementation guide to train the trainer. The theoretical framework utilized to help inform the development of this research was Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory (1989) in relation to human development for identifying the emerging best practices with being trauma informed. The scope of this research focuses on low-socioeconomic status (SES) urban youth, so cultural sensitivity is naturally always a component of a complete train-the-trainer, trauma-informed teaching program. I identified the emerging best practices in two ways: (a) by gathering and summarizing supporting sources …
A Qualitative Study Of The Lao American College Experience, Jerry Sithiphone
A Qualitative Study Of The Lao American College Experience, Jerry Sithiphone
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The majority of the Lao American population arrived in the United States after the end of the “American War in Southeast Asia” in 1975 as political refugees. Nevertheless, as Asian Americans, Lao Americans are also stereotyped to be the “model minority” and therefore do not face the same educational and socioeconomical challenges like other communities of color. However, Lao Americans are not the model minority and face numerous obstacles as the community is overlooked and history is forgotten by mainstream America. The lack of scholarly literature on Lao Americans highlights not only the general misunderstanding of the community, but also …
Human Capital Formation And Return Migration Within Mong Communities In Rural/Semi-Rural Northern California, Chong Yang
Human Capital Formation And Return Migration Within Mong Communities In Rural/Semi-Rural Northern California, Chong Yang
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This research uses computational grounded theory to explore the human capital formation and stay/return migration experiences of well-educated Mong adults living in various rural/semi-rural Northern California localities within Butte, Yuba, and Sutter Counties. Rural vitality is dependent on the return of these well-educated rural-raised adults. Out-migration of rurality’s best and brightest contributes towards a brain drain and the hallowing out of rurality’s human capital. Findings of this research is conveyed using two research articles examining two different points on the continuum of rural vitality. The first article examines 19 Mong adults’ educational experiences within their rural communities and college education. …

Who Gets ‘To Guru’? Scientist Ted Speakers And The Role Of Collective Identity In Peer Evaluation Of Audience Diversification, Brian P. Reschke, Taeya M. Howell
Faculty Publications
As producers diversify to additional audiences, they invite scrutiny of themselves and the products they provide, both by external evaluators as well as peer producers. We argue that in certain conditions, audience diversification may suggest producers represent their producer group, prompting special scrutiny by peers. In these cases, peer evaluation of diversification depends on the correspondence between the identity of the diversifying producer and the collective identity of the producer group, such that peers sanction non-prototypical producers and support exemplary producers. We develop and test hypotheses in the context of science, examining how appeals to the general public—giving a TED …
The Case For Ağrı Dağı/Masis As Biblical Mt. Ararat, Randall W. Younker
The Case For Ağrı Dağı/Masis As Biblical Mt. Ararat, Randall W. Younker
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
While there have been several proposals for the location of the ark of Noah’s landing place, the two most widely accepted have been Mt. Judi and Ağrı Dağı/Masis.1 Of these two, Mt. Judi has received the greater support among scholars. One of the main arguments in support of Mt. Judi is that it is the older tradition (3rd century B.C.), while the tradition that Ağrı Dağı/Masis is the Biblical Mt. Ararat is said to have originated late—only in the 12th century A.D. or there about. In this paper we will make the case that the tradition for Ağrı Dağı/ Masis …

Applied Environmental Research
Forest fires triggered by various natural and anthropogenic drivers are increasing and threatening forest ecosystems across the globe. In Nepal, the high value Tropical Mixed Broad-leaved Forests are prone to fire caused by both natural and anthropogenic drivers. Thus, understanding fire drivers and their effect is important for the sustainable forest fire management. However, the preceding studies on forest specific fire drivers and their effect are limited. This research has identified the fire drivers and assessed their effect to fire occurrences in the Tropical Mixed Broad-leaved Forests of Nawalparasi District, Nepal. Fire drivers were identified and prioritized by participatory approaches. …

For Richer Or Poorer: Incentivizing Meaningful Investments In Qualified Opportunity Zones, Monica L. Keo
For Richer Or Poorer: Incentivizing Meaningful Investments In Qualified Opportunity Zones, Monica L. Keo
Seattle University Law Review
The wealth disparity in the United States is nothing new. Many have proposed wealth taxes and higher tax rates for large corporations to address income inequality; however, these proposals have been criticized as tax programs that are difficult to administer. Congress passed the Tax Cut and Jobs Act (TCJA) in 2017 and created a new investment vehicle known as the Qualified Opportunity Zone (QOZ). The QOZ program incentivizes private investors to invest their capital gains in exchange for a reduction in capital gains tax. The underlying idea of the QOZ program is to utilize a new tool designed to spur …
Bioenergy And Minigrids For Sustainable Human Development, Andrew Allee
Bioenergy And Minigrids For Sustainable Human Development, Andrew Allee
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Human-caused climate change and deep disparities in human development imperil a prosperous and just future for our planet and the people who live on it. Transforming our society to mitigate global warming offers an opportunity to rebuild energy systems to the benefit of those who are harmed by global inequality today. I examine this opportunity through the lens of two sustainable energy technologies: bioenergy and miniature electricity grids (minigrids).
Bioenergy requires land to produce biomass and is inextricably connected to the surrounding environment, agricultural livelihoods, and food system. I apply data science tools to study aspects of land use and …
Special Interests In Prosecutor Elections, Carissa Byrne Hessick, Nathan Pinnell
Special Interests In Prosecutor Elections, Carissa Byrne Hessick, Nathan Pinnell
Faculty Publications
While much has been written about money in politics generally, little attention has been paid to money in prosecutor elections specifically. This Symposium Article aims to identify the special interests at play in prosecutor elections. Using an original nationwide dataset of campaign contributions in prosecutor elections, it also seeks to provide insight into the extent of special interests' financial power in those elections.
In accomplishing these two tasks, this Article grapples with the incongruence between ordinary theories of special interests and the office of prosecutor. Most theories have been developed to describe and explain how special interests seek to influence …

These elements are developed simultaneously and with calculated balance.
This method was first …
Teaching Italian Romanticism Through Philately And Choral Works, Ilona Klein
Teaching Italian Romanticism Through Philately And Choral Works, Ilona Klein
Faculty Publications
Philately and choral works can be excellent integrative pedagogical tools when teaching Italian Romanticism at the undergraduate level. In the classroom, postage stamps provide an historical narrative for students and can help clarify the political, artistic and cultural mood of the time. The intrinsic symbolism of stamps represents the way a nation wants to be seen by the rest of the world. Instrumental and choral music, in their infinite combination of tones, combine sound with sung words, creating an artistic subtext that reveals the complexity and variety of human aesthetic expression. For the current generation of students accustomed to visual …

Social media is an increasingly popular forum for medical education. Many educators, including those in infectious diseases, are now creating and sharing unique and educational patient cases online. Unfortunately, some educators unknowingly threaten patient privacy and open themselves to legal liability. Further, the use of published figures or tables creates risk of copyright infringement. As more and more infectious diseases physicians engage in social media, it is imperative to create best practices to protect both patients and physicians. This summary will define the legal requirements of patient de-identification as well as other practical recommendations as they relate to use of …

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can become complicated by secondary invasive fungal infections (IFIs), stemming primarily from severe lung damage and immunologic deficits associated with the virus or immunomodulatory therapy. Other risk factors include poorly controlled diabetes, structural lung disease and/or other comorbidities, and fungal colonization. Opportunistic IFI following severe respiratory viral illness has been increasingly recognized, most notably with severe influenza. There have been many reports of fungal infections associated with COVID-19, initially predominated by pulmonary aspergillosis, but with recent emergence of mucormycosis, candidiasis, and endemic mycoses. These infections can be challenging to diagnose and are associated with poor outcomes. …

Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare, under-recognized disease that affects respiratory ciliary function, resulting in chronic oto-sino-pulmonary disease. The PCD clinical phenotype overlaps with other common respiratory conditions and no single diagnostic test detects all forms of PCD. In 2018, PCD experts collaborated with the American Thoracic Society (ATS) to create a clinical diagnostic guideline for patients across North America, specifically considering the local resources and limitations for PCD diagnosis in the United States and Canada. Nasal nitric oxide (nNO) testing is recommended for first-line testing in patients ≥5 years old with a compatible clinical phenotype; however, all low …
