Negotiating Housing Precarity : Displacement And Homing Of Migrant-Tenants Under Urban Redevelopment In Hong Kong, Ka Wai Wu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Urban displacement, one of the key issues of socio-spatial injustices, is often portrayed as a process of class restructuring and eliminating sense of place. Problematising the conventional understanding of local space as a static entity, this research foregrounds the experience of displacement of migrant-tenants living in the area of To Kwa Wan, a district in Hong Kong which still serves as the lowest rental market in the city as it is gradually subsumed into intensified private and government-initiated urban redevelopment in the last decade.
Drawing on the literature on displacement, mobility studies and critical home studies, this research explores how …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Alkenones are biomarkers produced solely by algae in the order Isochrysidales that have been used to reconstruct sea surface temperature (SST) since the 1980s. However, alkenone-based SST reconstructions in the northern high latitude oceans show significant bias towards warmer temperatures in core-tops, diverge from other SST proxies in down core records, and are often accompanied by anomalously high relative abundance of the C37 tetra-unsaturated methyl alkenone (%C37:4). Elevated %C37:4 is widely interpreted as an indicator of low sea surface salinity from polar water masses, but its biological source has thus far remained elusive. Here we identify a lineage of Isochrysidales …

Development And Validation Of A Neural Network For The Automated Detection Of Horn Flies On Cattle, Eric T. Psota, E. K. Luc, G. M. Pighetti, L. G. Schneider, R. T. Trout Fryxell, J. W. Keele, L. A. Kuehn
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
When the number of horn flies that blood feed on cattle exceeds the economic threshold, they can adversely affect the health and wellbeing of their hosts. Excessive horn fly burdens also lead to reduced weight gain and, consequently, diminished profits for livestock producers. Effective management and treatment require reliable surveillance methods for estimating the degree of horn fly burden (i.e., counting the number of flies on cattle). Traditionally, these estimates are obtained through human visual estimation, either in-person or by counting images on a photo; however, these methods are costly both in terms of time and labor and are prone …
Are Universities Promoting Networking Opportunities In Online Mba Programs, And Should They Be?, Timothy Veach
Are Universities Promoting Networking Opportunities In Online Mba Programs, And Should They Be?, Timothy Veach
Faculty Publications - College of Business
This study explores promotion of peer/professional networking opportunities in online MBA programs as compared with on-campus MBA programs through content analysis of the landing pages of 152 accredited MBA programs. Results of statistical analysis suggest that online MBA program marketers are not promoting peer/professional networking and relying heavily on promotion of program flexibility and value. This prompts a discussion of whether online MBA program marketers should promote networking more aggressively, whether the meaning of networking as applied to today’s business world needs to be revisited, or both.

Impact Of Using Drones In Emergency Medicine: What Does The Future Hold?, Anna M. Johnson, Christopher J. Cunningham, Evan Arnold, Wayne D. Rosamond, Jessica K. Zègre-Hemsey
Emergency Medicine Articles
The use of unmanned aerial vehicles or "drones" has expanded in the last decade, as their technology has become more sophisticated, and costs have decreased. They are now used routinely in farming, environmental surveillance, public safety, commercial product delivery, recreation, and other applications. Health-related applications are only recently becoming more widely explored and accepted. The use of drone technology in emergency medicine is especially promising given the need for a rapid response to enhance patient outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to describe some of the main current and expanding applications of drone technology in emergency medicine and to …

Digitization Of Ecological History In The Driftless Area Of Minnesota, St. Mary's University Of Minnesota-Geospatial Services, Winona State University-Library Special Collections
Ecological History StoryMaps
The Winona County Historical Society (WCHS) and Winona State University (WSU) collaborated on applying for a Heritage Partnership grant to produce shared resources with the goal to educate the Winona community about the local ecological history of the area. The grant provided the opportunity to hire St. Mary's University of Minnesota - GeoSpatial Services to reconstruct a map fo the vegetative communities in the city of Winona based on a 1855 land survey and other available data. An 1862 transcription of the 1855 of the land survey was found in the WCHS Laird Norton Archive, which was the starting point …

Public Transit Infrastructure And Heat Perceptions In Hot And Dry Climates, Yuliya Dzyuban, David M. Hondula, Paul J. Coseo, Charles L. Redman
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Many cities aim to progress toward their sustainability and public health goals by increasing use of their public transit systems. However, without adequate protective infrastructure that provides thermally comfortable conditions for public transit riders, it can be challenging to reach these goals in hot climates. We took micrometeorological measurements and surveyed riders about their perceptions of heat and heat-coping behaviors at bus stops with a variety of design attributes in Phoenix, AZ, USA, during the summer of 2018. We identified the design attributes and coping behaviors that made riders feel cooler. We observed that current infrastructure standards and material choices …

Becoming An Andegraund Poet: Elena Shvarts And The Literary Environment Of The Late Soviet Era, Laura Little
Becoming An Andegraund Poet: Elena Shvarts And The Literary Environment Of The Late Soviet Era, Laura Little
Slavic Studies Faculty Publications
My dissertation focuses on Elena Shvarts (1948-2010), a Russian-language poet of the “unofficial” culture that flourished alongside state-sponsored arts in the post-war USSR. I ask how Shvarts became a leading talent of her generation in 1960s-1970s Leningrad, producing a substantial and sophisticated body of work without access to traditional print audiences. Studying Shvarts’s strategies for self-realization enhances our understanding of the forces that shaped late Soviet literature and the cultural field of dissidence from within and without. I trace her formation and rise to recognition, interweaving discussions of the political, literary, and social environment of her youth and early adulthood …

Stay-At-Home Order And Spatial Disparities In Covid-19 Pandemic In New York City, Youqin Huang, Rui Li
Stay-At-Home Order And Spatial Disparities In Covid-19 Pandemic In New York City, Youqin Huang, Rui Li
Understanding and eliminating minority health disparities in a 21st-century pandemic: A White Paper Collection
Much of the world has adopted unprecedented lockdown policies as the key method to address the spread of COVID-19; yet their effect on pandemic outcomes remain largely unknown. This research determines how mobility restriction policies and public transit system shape intra-city health disparities in this pandemic, using New York City as a case study. With a spatial method and multiple sources of data, this research demonstrates the effectiveness of the stay-at-home order. On average, people spent about 20% more time at home in 2020 than in the same period in 2019. Census tracts with people spending more time at home …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Visual literacy, or the ability to make sense of and produce images, is an essential but long underrated skill in science. Career scientists and engineers decode and encode information in pictorial form using visual literacy skills regularly. This research will explore first the purpose of science education in the United States and how its reforms have been influenced by career scientists. It will explore if visual literacy skills are aligned with these purposes. This research will then investigate the benefits of incorporating visual literacy in science education to this end. Finally, this research will outline research-based instructional strategies for integrating …
Teacher Perceptions & Practice Of Technology Integration Before And After Picrat Matrix Professional Development Intervention, Donald H. Heberer Jr.
Teacher Perceptions & Practice Of Technology Integration Before And After Picrat Matrix Professional Development Intervention, Donald H. Heberer Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Professional development provides support and training to teachers using new technologies. Several educational technology models, guidelines, and frameworks have provided educators a guide to effective technology integration. Building upon previous models like the SAMR model (Puentedura, 2013), the TPCK model (Misrah and & Koehler, 2005), and the RAT model (Hughes, 1998), a new model called the PICRAT matrix (Kimmons, 2018) has emerged. PICRAT accounts for both the student’s interaction with educational technology and the teacher's use of technology in instructional practice. The purpose of this study was to examine teacher perceptions and instructional practice on educational technology before and after …
A Case Study Of Administrator, Teacher, And Parent Perceptions And Usage Of Infinite Campus At The Secondary Level, Michael Kenneth Larson
A Case Study Of Administrator, Teacher, And Parent Perceptions And Usage Of Infinite Campus At The Secondary Level, Michael Kenneth Larson
Theses and Dissertations
Research has shown that parent involvement has been associated with positive academic outcomes, including but not limited to, increased academic performance, lower rates of retention/failure, increased self-regulatory behavior, higher social functioning, and reduced special education placements (Anderson & Minke, 2007; Scharton, 2019).
The use of on-line data management systems has proliferated over the course of the past decade. Throughout the 1990s, computer technology rapidly expanded in United States public schools. Between 1996-1997, U.S. school districts had added 500,000 computers for administrative use (Darby & Hughes, 2005). The passage of No Child Left behind (NCLB) and Race to the Top bolstered …
Preparing Preservice Teachers To Facilitate Courageous Conversations: A Case Study Of Social Studies Teacher Educators' Perceptions And Practices, Ariel N. Henry
Theses and Dissertations
Scholars and associations committed to powerful social studies education have long advocated for students to explore controversial issues so they grow into informed, ethical, and participating citizens. Yet, teachers avoid undertaking this work due to a lack of training, confidence, or experience in facilitating courageous conversations about tough issues. Teachers may fear facing complaints and retribution. They may worry about how to defuse classroom tensions and manage strong emotions. While scholarship on teaching controversy has primarily focused on preservice and in-service teachers’ views and experiences, research examining teacher educators’ perceptions and practices has been limited. The purpose of this qualitative …
A Case Study On The Implementation Of Disciplinary Literacy With Multimodal Design In Social Studies, John J. Castaldo
A Case Study On The Implementation Of Disciplinary Literacy With Multimodal Design In Social Studies, John J. Castaldo
Theses and Dissertations
Social studies education provides education researchers with a less common opportunity to discover multimodal instructional methods for disciplinary literacy. During a 12-week period in 2021, four social studies teachers with at least one history course in a large suburban Mercer County, New Jersey school district participated in a case study to showcase how disciplinary literacy can be implemented using multimodal design. Given the existing lack of research on instructional literacy design for secondary grades, this study provides researchers and practitioners with multiple perspectives on how to maximize teaching practices in underrepresented areas of education. Significantly, social studies teachers will thus …
