Critically Imagining A Decolonised Vision In Australian Poetry, Cassandra Julie O'Loughlin
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
Postmodern ecocriticism, given its broad range of perspectives, offers an agreeable platform for articulating a new, advanced and inclusive framework for a decolonising theorisation of literature and the environment. This article seeks to identify Australian Western decolonising poetry that sits in harmony with Indigenous aural and literary versions of communicative engagement with Country. The concept of human embeddedness in ecological relationships and biological processes as part of a complex matrix of interdependent things is embraced. In particular this article focuses on inclusivity and interconnectedness of all life forms to illustrate aesthetic and conceptual interfaces between Aboriginal Australia and Western poetics. …

The Dancing Between Two Worlds Project: Background, Methodology And Learning To Approach Community In Place, Anindita Banerjee, Shaun Mcleod, Gretel Taylor, Patrick L. West
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
This article recounts the history to date of the Dancing Between Two Worlds (DBTW) project, which was initiated by a team of artist-scholars at Deakin University in 2018. DBTW’s brief was to engage the Indian community living in the western fringes of Melbourne in a project on civic belonging, cross-cultural artistic identity, and the performance of outer-suburban Indian diaspora. Working with the creative and community energies that are activated at the intersection of the creative arts and demographically inflected place, the Deakin researchers collaborated with local artists with an Indian background on a major performance in late 2019: …
Landscape Theology: Exploring The Outfields Of The Telemarkian Dream Song, Thomas Arentzen
Landscape Theology: Exploring The Outfields Of The Telemarkian Dream Song, Thomas Arentzen
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
The article explores the Norwegian ‘national ballad’ Draumkvæde (the Dream Song) in Maren Ramskeid’s version. This work has traditionally been interpreted as a folklore adaptation of medieval visionary literature such as the Vision of Tundale, related to Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. The ballad, however, lacks demons and devils and infernal torture – it is even almost completely devoid of human beings. Instead it tells of a corporeal encounter with an imagined natural landscape. This dreamscape of the song is intimately intertwined with the local terrain of the singer. Maren Ramskeid engaged her own landscape in Telemark, the …

Given the challenges in collecting up-to-date, comparable data on migrant populations the potential of digital trace data to study migration and migrants has sparked considerable interest among researchers and policy makers. In this paper we assess the reliability of one such data source that is heavily used within the research community: geolocated tweets. We assess strategies used in previous work to identify migrants based on their geolocation histories. We apply these approaches to infer the travel history of a set of Twitter users who regularly posted geolocated tweets between July 2012 and June 2015. In a second step we hand-code …

The Impact Of Gay Social Networking Applications On Dating In The Deaf Gay Community, Brian Cheslik, S. Jordan Wright
Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications
Dating between Deaf gay men who are American Sign Language (ASL) users and hearing gay men who use spoken language has historically been a challenge, creating a binary in Deaf-hearing relationships. The dating game has been revolutionized by the creation of geo-social networking (GSN) apps, where people communicate through the medium of written English and digital photographs. Furthermore, GSN apps have created a network for meeting other men who identify as Deaf and gay, as well as revealing the existence of a sexual fetish for Deaf partners. The main research question driving this investigation is: What are the impacts of …

Popular location-based games (LBGs) such as Pokemon GO have been downloaded hundreds of millions of times and have been shown to have a positive impact on mild exercise and social well-being of their players. Several currently popular LBGs introduce a gamified implementation of territorial conflict, where players are divided into teams that battle for the ownership of geographically distributed points of interest. We investigate how social factors and territoriality influence playing intensity in the context of Pok´emon GO. Using reasoning from social identity theory, we propose a structural model connecting territoriality, sociality and playing intensity. To test the model, we …
The Grid As Organizing Principle Of Space, Information, Time, And Display, Sam Sherman
The Grid As Organizing Principle Of Space, Information, Time, And Display, Sam Sherman
Theses and Dissertations
Over the past several centuries, the grid has colonized nearly every aspect of human life. This text traces the development of the grid in technology and art, and links the grid’s proliferation to the rise of modern governance. The grid has become the primary tool by which government exerts social control via the production of spectacle. As such, artists have increasingly recognized the grid as a central problematic to confront rather than reiterate. Within this context, I consider two of my videos: Today’s News (2020) and Tiles (2020).

The >494 Ma Lillevik Ophiolite Fragment (Gratangseidet Igneous Complex) Near Narvik, Scandinavian Caledonides, Trond Slagstad, Mark Anderson, Kerstin Saalmann, Graham Hagen-Peter
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
One of several irregular, plagioclase-phyric felsic veins in the Lillevik ophiolite fragment (Gratangseidet Igneous Complex) in Narvik, northern Norway, yielded a U–Pb zircon age of 494 ± 5 Ma. The veins cut deformed, compositionally layered, light REE-depleted gabbros that arguably constituted part of the now-dismembered ophiolite stratigraphy. The felsic veins were themselves deformed, probably during Silurian Scandian deformation, but the cross-cutting relationships suggest that they post-date initial deformation of the ophiolitic rocks. The felsic veins are strongly depleted in heavy REE and have moderately juvenile Lu–Hf zircon compositions, with εHf494 between 6.2 and 9.9. By analogy with felsic rocks in …

The Nabataean Façade Monuments Of Petra, Jordan: An Assessment Of The Façade Monuments And Their Geological Environment., Josie M. Newbold
Theses and Dissertations
The Nabataean people controlled the Petra region of modern-day Jordan from sometime before 300 BCE until the Roman Annexation of the Nabataean kingdom in 106 CE. The Nabataeans are known for the monumental façades carved into the sandstone cliffs surrounding their capital city. The first survey of the façade monuments was undertaken by Brünnow and Domaszewski in 1904. They created a typology that has only been slightly modified by subsequent authors including Judith McKenzie (1990). This typology does not account for all of the variations in façade types in Petra, thus creating a need for a new typology proposed in …
