Slowing The Spread Of Covid-19: Review Of “Social Distancing” Interventions Deployed By Public Transit In The United States And Canada, Camille Kamga, Penny Eickemeyer

Publications and Research

This paper presents a review of social distancing measures deployed by transit agencies in the United States and Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic and discusses how specific operators across the two countries have implemented changes. Challenges and impacts on their operations are also provided.

Social distancing is one of the community mitigation measures traditionally implemented during influenza pandemics and the novel coronavirus pandemic. Research has shown that social distancing is effective in containing the spread of disease. This is applicable to the current situation with the novel coronavirus, given the lack of effective vaccines and treatments in the United States …

Clinical Geography: A Proposal To Embrace Space, Place And Wellbeing Through Person-Centered Practice, Jessica M. Finlay, Graham D. Rowles

Graduate Center for Gerontology Faculty Publications

This essay envisions how geography can operationalize nuanced understandings of space and place to enrich the lives of individuals across the lifespan. We propose a focused integration of geography into person-centered practice: a clinical geography dedicated to working directly with people to promote optimal physical and mental health outcomes and wellbeing. Our proposal integrates spatial modifications to facilitate access and utility, behavioral interventions to maximize effectiveness in using space, and therapeutic engagement to nurture a deeper sense of ‘being in place’ that enhances wellbeing and quality of life. This focus is timely given societal instability and precariousness resulting from incongruous …

A Geopolitical Analysis Of The Construction Of Informal Structures In Iraq After 2003, Haider Abdullah Abbas, Nice Full Kidney

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The existence of informal structures in the state is a definite and urgent necessity as complementary and supportive to the official institutions within the entity of the state, as it is the supervisory body that works to monitor government performance and thus evaluate its work. The state is indispensable for the presence of professional unions, civil society institutions and political parties operating within the political arena, as it represents a front for democracy. In the modern state, this is in the event that these institutions were operating according to formal well-studied work systems and methodologies and were driven by a …

The main purpose is to associate the available scholarship on the electronic and digital collections in the Web of Science indexed documents. There was a lack of computable quantities on the electronic collections. We used the bibliometric analysis and 2002 published documents were found. The results indicated that the top topic of published documents as electronic books or e-books and library, article as a type, English as the top language, top publications in 2016, and Huang YM was the …

New Aspects On Using Artificial Intelligence To Shape The Future Of Entrepreneurs, Saad Darwish, Abdulsalam Darwish, Venus Bunagan Mar 2021

New Aspects On Using Artificial Intelligence To Shape The Future Of Entrepreneurs, Saad Darwish, Abdulsalam Darwish, Venus Bunagan

Information Sciences Letters

One way for enterprises to be successful in today’s challenging market is to be agile and be flexible to handle market changes. Using a conceptual and operational framework for improving the enterprise and keeping their desired situation, is always required. In this paper, a service oriented decision support system-based framework is proposed. The framework seeks for service oriented architecture (SOA) governance and suggests the initial architecture of the enterprise to support agility and optimality. Also, for the stability purpose a structure including service platforms, analyzers and decision support systems are employed to analyze the enterprise and make better decisions.

Entropic Dynamics Of Networks, Felipe Xavier Costa, Pedro Pessoa Mar 2021

Entropic Dynamics Of Networks, Felipe Xavier Costa, Pedro Pessoa

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

Here we present the entropic dynamics formalism for networks. That is, a framework for the dynamics of graphs meant to represent a network derived from the principle of maximum entropy and the rate of transition is obtained taking into account the natural information geometry of probability distributions. We apply this framework to the Gibbs distribution of random graphs obtained with constraints on the node connectivity. The information geometry for this graph ensemble is calculated and the dynamical process is obtained as a diffusion equation. We compare the steady state of this dynamics to degree distributions found on real-world networks.

John Westcott’S Plan For Public Education In Florida, 1844, Nita Katharine Pyburn

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1843 the Legislative Council of Florida passed two acts pertaining to education ; one providing that “the sheriff of the several counties . . . be Commissioners of school’lands in their respective counties.” Each was to rent or lease the land and retain ten percent as commission. The remainder of the proceeds was to be paid to the county treasurer at the beginning of the year. The county court was to appropriate the fun.ds thus accruing “to the education of the poor children of the County in which such land was situated.“l In 1844 another act was passed which …

Taylor County History And Civil War Deserters, W. T. Cash

Florida Historical Quarterly

When Florida seceded from the Union, Taylor county was four years old, it having been created from Madison county on December 23, 1856. As a functioning political unit its age was at least six months less, for the members of its first board of county commissioners were not qualified until March 27, 1857, and its first judge of probate, one of whose duties was to preside at board meetings, was not commissioned until July 4, following.

Early Education In Tallahassee And The West Florida Seminary Now Florida State University, Part I, William G. Dodd

Florida Historical Quarterly

The school problems of early Tallahassee, after a long process of trial and error, were finally solved by the establishment, on January 1, 1857, of the West Florida Seminary. Though the Seminary was nominally a State institution, actually for many years nearly all of its students were from Tallahassee and vicinity, and it was to all intents and purposes a Tallahassee school. With its location in the town, citizens were at last assured of a permanent means of educating their sons, and a little later, their daughters also. Until this fortunate event, Tallahassee, like the other towns of the Territory …

Perhaps Charles Mallory, as he worked at his carpenter’s bench somewhere in New England, dreamed that some day he might have a son to work beside him or to follow him at the same bench; and later, now a building superintendent and contractor in the island of Trinidad off the coast of South America, he may have dreamed again that the little Stephen playing about his shop or office, might become a great man. But if so, the reality far surpassed his dreams-for the boy became a member of the foremost legislative body of the world, and later was one …

Going Beyond The Blue: The Utility Of Emergency Medical Services Data In Understanding Violent Crime, Julie Hibdon, Cody E. Telep, Jessica Huff Mar 2021

Going Beyond The Blue: The Utility Of Emergency Medical Services Data In Understanding Violent Crime, Julie Hibdon, Cody E. Telep, Jessica Huff

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

National victimization data suggest less than 50% of violent crime incidents are reported to the police. Official reports of crime to police, however, are often the only type of data used for the analysis of violence problems, the identification of geographic concentrations of violent crime, and the selection of targets for police and prevention resources. Yet, the question remains, are estimates of violent crime prevalence and location distorted from a unilateral reliance on police data? Here, we examine whether emergency medical service (EMS) data collected by the fire department are spatially concentrated in the same way as police data and …

Ice Thickness Estimates Of Lemon Creek Glacier, Alaska, From Active-Source Seismic Imaging, Stephen A. Veitch, Marianne Karplus, Galen Kaip, Lucia F. Gonzalez, Jason M. Amundson, Timothy C. Bartholomaus Mar 2021

Ice Thickness Estimates Of Lemon Creek Glacier, Alaska, From Active-Source Seismic Imaging, Stephen A. Veitch, Marianne Karplus, Galen Kaip, Lucia F. Gonzalez, Jason M. Amundson, Timothy C. Bartholomaus

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Lemon Creek Glacier, a temperate valley glacier in the Juneau Icefield of Southeast Alaska, is the site of long running (>60 years) glaciological studies. However, the most recent published estimates of its thickness and subglacial topography come from two ∼50 years old sources that are not in agreement and do not account for the effects of years of negative mass balance. We collected a 1-km long active-source seismic line on the upper section of the glacier parallel and near to the centerline of the glacier, roughly straddling the equilibrium-line altitude. We used these data to perform joint reflection-refraction velocity …

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, decreased volumes of stroke admissions and mechanical thrombectomy were reported. The study's objective was to examine whether subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions demonstrated similar declines.

METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, retrospective, observational study across 6 continents, 37 countries and 140 comprehensive stroke centres. Patients with the diagnosis of SAH, aneurysmal SAH, ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions and COVID-19 were identified by prospective aneurysm databases or by International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, codes. The 3-month cumulative volume, monthly volumes for SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling procedures were compared for the period …

Defining And Addressing The Intersection Of Sports, Media, And Social Activism, Kaylee Layne Crafton

Honors Theses

Athletes have used their sports platforms and the elevated statuses of fame to share their political views and seek change for centuries. However, our society is now at a time in which athlete activism seems to be at its peak due to constant societal shifts and the quick, widespread dissemination of news through various forms of media. This study sought to answer one primary question: When can athletes share their views about racial equality and social justice? For Americans, the “when” in which athletes can speak up is often a divisive issue. This study analyzed how major sports leagues and …

Running waters contribute substantially to global carbon fluxes through decomposition of terrestrial plant litter by aquatic microorganisms and detritivores. Diversity of this litter may influence instream decomposition globally in ways that are not yet understood. We investigated latitudinal differences in decomposition of litter mixtures of low and high functional diversity in 40 streams on 6 continents and spanning 113° of latitude. Despite important variability in our dataset, we found latitudinal differences in the effect of litter functional diversity on decomposition, which we explained as evolutionary adaptations of litter-consuming detritivores to resource availability. Specifically, a balanced diet effect appears to operate …

French Fixed Expressions: Language Initiation In Writing Skill Of Lower Intermediate Level For French As Foreign Language Learners, Tri Eko Agustiningrum

Language mastery is based on complex language knowledge and skills. To achieve a high level of proficiency in one language, it is not enough to know many words and know how to apply grammar rules, but it is also important to understand and use specific expressions in that language. The use of expressions allows people to express themselves figuratively more naturally in the target language. Native speakers generally prefer to use expressions rather than producing new lexical combinations. For example, if a native French speaker says "He runs away very quickly", he will tend to use a common phrase such …

The Ancient world was divided into three parts, Europe, Asia Minor and Libya (the present-day Maghreb). The Maghreb of the ancient world is geographically situated in an area which recieived cultural and linguistic influence form all over the world. Accordingly, the conception of identity is affected by socio-cultural historical events. Thus, history is a major component of identity formation.

Denying a part of pre-Islamic history bears on the totality of the artistic and philosophical production that existed in the North of Africa which means a total erasure of a historical period. Such segmentation divides Maghrebins into two distinct origins, the …

The relationship between the central authority with southern Morocco during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: ASSA as a case study between 1830 and 1934

Morocco has witnessed dangerous and obvious transformations in the relationship between the tribes and the Moroccan regime or the so-called “Makhzen”. These relations were also influenced by the continuous existence of the foreign occupation regimes (France and Portugal). These changes affect the vision of the local leaders since the occupation made tribalism lose all its components and itsinheritance. As a result, nervousness, nomadism, and raiding lost its power. This article attempts to deal with the topic …
