Toxicology has been an active research field for many decades, with academic, industrial and government involvement. Modern omics and computational approaches are changing the field, from merely disease-specific observational models into target-specific predictive models. Traditionally, toxicology has strong links with other fields such as biology, chemistry, pharmacology and medicine. With the rise of synthetic and new engineered materials, alongside ongoing prioritisation needs in chemical risk assessment for existing chemicals, early predictive evaluations are becoming of utmost importance to both scientific and regulatory purposes. ELIXIR is an intergovernmental organisation that brings together life science resources from across Europe. To coordinate the …

Slums in the city-: Disorder or Deviance? The Case of Anza (Agadir)

For populations of rural origin, the shantytown appears to meet the absolute need for shelter and its development reflects the insufficient income of these households, even if the price of cottages increases. In many cases, it is clearly an acute identity crisis among the population.

The Protection Of Foreign Investments In Disputed Maritime Areas Of The South China Sea, Anh Nguyen Oct 2021

The Protection Of Foreign Investments In Disputed Maritime Areas Of The South China Sea, Anh Nguyen

Indonesian Journal of International Law

This study used a legal framework developed by a recent scholarship to examine the protection of foreign investments in disputed maritime areas. The framework classifies these areas and establishes the jurisdictional challenges faced by investment tribunals in such constellations. For instance, there are high-profile foreign investments in the South China Sea (SCS) with significant threats of increasing escalation between SCS states. Therefore, this study aimed to examine investment protection in disputed waters of SCS using this framework. Since BITs of SCS states include maritime areas beyond the territorial sea in their territories, there is need to abide to international law. …

Efek Aglomerasi Di Indonesia : Komparasi Jawa Dan Luar Jawa, Eggie Dwi Ananda Chaniago, Muhammad Hanri Oct 2021

Efek Aglomerasi Di Indonesia : Komparasi Jawa Dan Luar Jawa, Eggie Dwi Ananda Chaniago, Muhammad Hanri

Jurnal Kebijakan Ekonomi

Population density and average city’s wages in Java are higher than outside Java. The literature shows that population density can increase the productivity of firms and workers, thereby increasing the level of wages in cities. In urban economics, agglomeration economies are defined as the benefits that come when firms and people locate near one another together in cities and industrial clusters. This study estimates the agglomeration effect in Java and outside Java cities by analyzing the relationship between population density and urban characteristics with wage levels. Previous studies have shown that population density is positively correlated to wage levels at …

Association Between Aqueous Atrazine And Pediatric Cancer In Nebraska, Jagadeesh Puvvula, Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt, Balkiss S. Ouattara, Alan S. Kolok, Jesse E. Bell, Eleanor G. Rogan

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Agrichemicals, chemicals used to maximize crop and animal production, can lead to water quality concerns when these chemicals run off into surface and groundwater after precipitation events. In Nebraska, one such chemical is atrazine, a suspected carcinogen. This study evaluated the association between atrazine in surface and groundwater, in relation to the incidence of pediatric cancer in Nebraska watersheds over 30 years (1 January 1987 to 31 December 2016). The watersheds were grouped into four categories based on the average atrazine concentration over the study period, using quantile classification. The associations between atrazine (ground/surface) and pediatric cancer after adjusting for …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is widely recognised as pivotal in soil function, exerting im-portant controls on soil structure, moisture retention, nutrient cycling and biodiversity, which in turn underpins a range of provisioning, supporting and regulatory ecosystem services. SOC stocks in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA) are threatened by changes in land practice and climatic factors, which destabilises the soil system and resilience to continued climate change. Here, we provide a review of the role of SOC in overall soil health and the challenges and opportunities associated with main-taining and building SOC stocks in SSA. As an exemplar national case, we focus on …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Strengthening research capacity (RC) amongst health professionals has both organisational and individual benefits. It can increase the quality of research and support the transfer of evidence into practice and policy. However there is little evidence on what works to develop and strengthen RC. This paper contributes to the evidence base by reporting findings from an evaluation of a programme that aimed to build capacity to use and do research amongst NHS and local authority organisations and their staff in a large english research partnership organisation. Methods: The evaluation used multiple qualitative methods including semi-structured interviews, focus groups and workshops …

Expanding The Reliable Paleomagnetic Constraints On Configurations Of Pre-Pangean Supercontinents, Zheng Gong Oct 2021

Expanding The Reliable Paleomagnetic Constraints On Configurations Of Pre-Pangean Supercontinents, Zheng Gong

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Supercontinents embody perhaps the longest cyclic process on our planet, profoundly influencing the evolution of Earth’s biosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere on timescales of hundred-million years or more. Yet, the configurations of pre-Pangean supercontinents, Rodinia, Nuna, and/or Kenorland, as well as their transition processes remain the subjects of debate, hampering the understanding of the interactions between the global tectonics and Earth’s evolution in deep time. Compared to other approaches, paleomagnetism is the only quantitative method to reconstruct pre-Pangean supercontinents in an absolute paleogeographic framework. However, a recent summary of global paleomagnetic data of Precambrian age reveals two problems. First is that …

On The Role Of Stability In Animal Morphology And Neural Control, Neelima Sharma Oct 2021

On The Role Of Stability In Animal Morphology And Neural Control, Neelima Sharma

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Mechanical stability is vital for the fitness and survival of animals and is a crucial aspect of robot design and control. Stability depends on multiple factors, including the body's intrinsic mechanical response and feedback control. But feedback control is more fragile than the body's innate mechanical response or open-loop control strategies because of sensory noise and time-delays in feedback. This thesis examines the overarching hypothesis that stability demands have played a crucial role in how animal form and function arise through natural selection and motor learning. In two examples, finger contact and overall body stability, we investigated the relationship between …

Skill Downgrading Among Refugees And Economic Immigrants In Germany: Evidence From The Syrian Refugee Crisis, Plamen Nikolov, Leila Salarpour, David Titus Oct 2021

Skill Downgrading Among Refugees And Economic Immigrants In Germany: Evidence From The Syrian Refugee Crisis, Plamen Nikolov, Leila Salarpour, David Titus

Economics Faculty Scholarship

Upon arrival to a new country, many immigrants face job downgrading, a phenomenon describing workers being in jobs below the ones they have based on the skills they possess. Moreover, in the presence of downgrading immigrants receiving lower wage returns to the same skills compared to natives. The level of downgrading could depend on the immigrant type and numerous other factors. This study examines the determinants of skill downgrading among two types of immigrants – refugees and economic immigrants – in the German labor markets between 1984 and 2018. We find that refugees downgrade more than economic immigrants, and this …

Explaining Florida Man, Ira P. Robbins Oct 2021

Explaining Florida Man, Ira P. Robbins

Florida State University Law Review

"Tlorida Man" is a popular cultural phenomenon in which journalists report on Floridians' unusual (and often criminal) behavior, and readers relish in and share the stories, largely on social media. A meme based on Florida Man news stories emerged in 2013 and continues to capture people's attention nationwide. Florida Man is one of the latest unique trends to come from the Sunshine State and contributes to Florida's reputation as a quirky place. Explanations for Florida Man center on Florida's Public Records Law, which is known as one of the most expansive open records laws in the country. All states and …

Investigating Epikarst Recharge Dynamics Under Agricultural Landuse Using Hydrometeorological And Isotopic Tracers, Austin Shane Deering Oct 2021

Investigating Epikarst Recharge Dynamics Under Agricultural Landuse Using Hydrometeorological And Isotopic Tracers, Austin Shane Deering

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Epikarst systems have complex recharge – discharge processes in telogenetic karst systems, including highly variable storage, flowpaths, and mixing dynamics. This research aimed to characterize the epikarst zone using hydrogen and oxygen isotopic tracers of these processes within south-central Kentucky’s Crumps Cave system located in the Pennyroyal Sinkhole Plain. Data and statistical analyses were applied to highresolution rainfall (RF), lysimeter (10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm depths), and an epikarst Waterfall 1 (WF1) isotope data collected on a weekly basis between 2011-2018. These data were coupled with WF1 discharge measurements and weather station data collected at Crumps Cave Preserve during …

An Adaptive Hazard Planning And Mitigation Framework For Responding To Urban Contamination In Karst Aquifer Systems, James Edward Troxell Oct 2021

An Adaptive Hazard Planning And Mitigation Framework For Responding To Urban Contamination In Karst Aquifer Systems, James Edward Troxell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Environmental hazards in karst regions are damaging and often go unnoticed until an issue has escalated to a point of affecting life or property. The field of emergency and environmental contamination response lacks planning or preparedness focused on remediating groundwater contamination in karst systems. A lack of preplanning before an incident can lead to confusion, delayed response, and the inability to remediate the contaminant. Due to the rapid movement of contaminants through urban karst groundwater aquifers, an efficient response plan that leverages localized data in a GIS should be developed and maintained in order to adequately respond. The objective of …

Exploring And Exploiting The Dynamics Of Networks In Complex Applied Research Projects: A Reflection On Learning In Action, Paul Coughlan, David Coghlan, Clare Rigg, Denise O'Leary

Books/Book Chapters

Since 1984, the European Union (EU) has supported research and development activities covering almost all scientific disciplines through a series of multi-annual Framework Programmes. The current programme is Horizon 2020. Common across the key indicators of research project performance have been actions by companies, including introduce and test innovations new to the company or the market. Initiatives to achieve these objectives require researchers to generate transdisciplinary knowledge in partnership with practitioners as co-researchers. This paper reflects on the authors’ experience of engaging in five EU-funded complex applied research projects over 20 years. The paper locates the process of the five …

Sexual Exploitation Of Indigenous Andean Women In Peru: President Fujimori’S Impact In The 1990s And The Current Cultural Implications, Carolyn Garner

Undergraduate Research (Journal)

The sexual exploitation of indigenous Andean women in Peru has been researched extensively over the past several decades. Peru received heightened international attention when the so-called “poverty alleviation” programs in the 1990s revealed that hundreds of thousands of indigenous women were forcibly sterilized. Today, groups around the globe fight for the rights of indigenous women in Peru for problems that have remained relatively unchanged in the past halfcentury. While there is extensive historical research as well as considerable resources describing current issues Andean women face, little work draws these two topics together. Through a substantive literary review, this project draws …
