Food Insecurity, Climate Change And Role Of Physicians, Joe Bhagratie, Bashyam Iyengar
Food Insecurity, Climate Change And Role Of Physicians, Joe Bhagratie, Bashyam Iyengar
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Food insecurity is a growing concern both locally and globally. Food insecurity has a number of causative factors. The food delivery system is laden with many inequities and fragilities. We will outline a framework of the food delivery system and the areas where inequities exist.
Climate change is an equally expansive topic. Changes to our climate have a myriad of impacts on our food delivery systems and in turn can exacerbate our already tenuous delivery system. Continued impacts on our environment creates even more imbalance and can subsequently exacerbate food inequities further.
The role climate change has is significant when …

The Importance Of Cultural Context In Rural Education: Historical And Modern Perspectives, Devynn C. Campbell-Halfaker, Margo A. Gregor
The Importance Of Cultural Context In Rural Education: Historical And Modern Perspectives, Devynn C. Campbell-Halfaker, Margo A. Gregor
Psychology from the Margins
This paper presents a review of the historical context and the prominent debates about rural education that occurred from 1900-1940 and connects current trends in rural education to this history. Outmigration of rural youth and the decline of rural populations spurred the development of the Country Life Commission (Danbom, 1979) which sought to address this problem through rural education reform. Outmigration of rural youth continues to be a concern for rural communities, and the continued and important role of modern education in this phenomenon is discussed. Additionally, the current paper offers a review of other historic concerns regarding rural education …
Is High-Speed Rail Green? Evidence From A Quasi-Natural Experiment In China, Ling Nie, Zhongxiang Zhang
Is High-Speed Rail Green? Evidence From A Quasi-Natural Experiment In China, Ling Nie, Zhongxiang Zhang
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Existing studies have investigated the environmental dividends of substituting high-speed rail for other energy-intensive vehicles from an engineering standpoint, but they have yet to explore the economic effects of high-speed rail and the associated carbon emission reduction benefits. To fill the research gap, we use panel data from 285 Chinese cities between 2004 and 2014, and employ a difference-in-difference model to empirically examine the impact of high-speed rail opening on CO2 emissions. Our results show that the opening of high-speed rail reduces local carbon emissions significantly. This finding is robust and is unaffected by outliers, control group selection, time trends, …

Teacher Perceptions Of The Curricular Viability Of Missouri Learning Standards As Correlated To Student Outcomes On End-Of-Course Assessments, Kevin G. Lowery
Teacher Perceptions Of The Curricular Viability Of Missouri Learning Standards As Correlated To Student Outcomes On End-Of-Course Assessments, Kevin G. Lowery
Dissertations
Approved by the Missouri State Board of Education in 2016, the Missouri Learning Standards “define the knowledge and skills students need in each grade-level and course” (Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education [MODESE], 2021g, About the Missouri Learning Standards section). State-mandated end-of-course assessments, such as the English II end-of-course assessment, are directly aligned to the Missouri Learning Standards and are administered in courses that have content associated with the standards (MODESE, 2021c). The purpose of this correlational study was to determine if significant relationships existed between teachers’ perceptions of the guaranteed and viable nature of Missouri Learning Standards and …

The Individual Water Insecurity Experiences (Iwise) Scale: Reliability, Equivalence And Validity Of An Individual-Level Measure Of Water Security, Sera L. Young, Hilary J. Bethancourt, Zacchary R. Ritter, Edward A. Frongillo Jr.
Faculty Publications
Objective: The lack of a validated and cross-culturally equivalent scale for measuring individual-level water insecurity has prevented identification of those most vulnerable to it. Therefore, we developed the 12-item Individual Water InSecurity Experiences (IWISE) Scale to comparably measure individual experiences with access, use, and stability (reliability) of water. Here, we examine the reliability, cross-country equivalence, and cross-country and within-country validity of the scale in a cross-sectional sample.
Methods: IWISE items were implemented by the Gallup World Poll among nationally representative samples of 43 970 adults (15 y) in 31 low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Internal consistency was assessed …

The Best Practices Of Port Sustainable Development: A Case Study In Korea, Saeyeon Roh, Vinh V. Thai, Hyunmi Jang, Gi Tae Yeo
Plymouth Business School
This paper aims to examine the main practices that shape sustainable port development in the context of Korean ports and generalize a typology of port–stakeholder decision framework for sustainable port development. First, the main practices of sustainable port development were examined through a comprehensive literature review and a holistic conceptual framework underpinned by sustainable development and stakeholder management theories. Semi-structured interviews were then conducted with 67 port managers in Korea. Lastly, FAHP was performed based on inputs from 18 port managers to analyze the priorities of the proposed sustainable port development practices. It was found that all proposed practices should …

Professional Responsibility, Legal Malpractice, Cybersecurity, And Cyber-Insurance In The Covid-19 Era, Ethan S. Burger
St. Mary's Journal on Legal Malpractice & Ethics
In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, law firms conformed their activities to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and state health authority guidelines by immediately reducing the size of gatherings, encouraging social distancing, and mandating the use of protective gear. These changes necessitated the expansion of law firm remote operations, made possible by the increased adoption of technological tools to coordinate workflow and administrative tasks, communicate with clients, and engage with judicial and governmental bodies.
Law firms’ increased use of these technological tools for carrying out legal and administrative activities has implications …

To be fully prepared to work within an increasingly diverse society, CSD students need to learn more about oppression, racism, equity and inclusion in addition to learning about cultural differences. In this article, a model of Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) developed as an integral part of a CSD graduate education curriculum is presented. Rooted in theoretical models including Critical Race Theory and Critical Disability Theory, the AOP curriculum includes eight modules, with each module defining relevant language, introducing concrete action step strategies, and giving students opportunities to practice these steps. Topics include forms of bias, systemic racism, oppression, cultural competence and …

Writing Here, Writing Now; Making Sense Of It All: Examining Cultural And Historical Context In The Introductory Creative Writing Class, Oindrila Mukherjee
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
Writers are a product of their environment. The time and place in which they live inevitably impact what they write, why they write, and how they write. I assign a brief reflection essay in my Introduction to Creative Writing class which asks students to consider social, historical, and cultural factors that influence the poetry, fiction, or nonfiction they write, either directly or indirectly. It encourages students to identify patterns in their writing, and to reflect on what it means to live in a specific part of the world at a specific time in history. This makes them more aware of …
The Orientation Of Professionally Teaching Of Foreign Languages In Pedagogical Higher Education Institutions, Gulchexra Xudoyberdiyeva
The Orientation Of Professionally Teaching Of Foreign Languages In Pedagogical Higher Education Institutions, Gulchexra Xudoyberdiyeva
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
This article is about the effectiveness of using descriptive methods in English classes and professional-oriented teaching foreign language at a non-language university. It analyses the peculiarities of descriptive method, comparative-historical method and the role of linguodidactics in teaching foreign language at a non-linguistic university. The introduction of the concept of competence in the educational process eliminates the gap between the theoretical knowledge that has hitherto been used in teaching practice and its practical application, that is, when the student has theoretical knowledge, it is difficult to use it in problematic situations. So, Great attention is paid to the teaching of …

Integrative Approach In The Efl Classes, Tursinoy Ravshanova, Nazira Isanova
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
In the article it was given about a learning process on an integrative basis, integrative-educational activities and integrated didactic approaches. This approach does not neglect, either, the home languages of the learners, especially when they explicitly taught. One can therefore have two (or even three or four) languages that are being “tackled” simultaneously. Despite the great potential and effectiveness of the integrative skills approach many teachers, especially in EFL contexts still implement the segregated skills teaching by presenting one skill separately from the others. In many EFL programs, courses on speaking are isolated from writing or listening learning activities are …
Multiracial Individuals And Educational Testing, Karen Alexander
Multiracial Individuals And Educational Testing, Karen Alexander
The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal
A literature review focused on quantitative measures and methods regarding multiracial individuals and educational testing revealed that multiracial individuals are uniquely different than monoracial individuals in terms of their racial identity and these unique identities interact with test scores. Until recently, this uniqueness has been ignored by institutions and within the field of educational testing. The uniqueness of multiracial identity should be taken into consideration when using test measures to make decisions for selection and when comparing group outcomes. The review provides a brief picture regarding the history of categorization of multiracial individuals and current research which connects the multiracial …

Extensive networks of large plots have the potential to transform knowledge of avian community dynamics through time and across geographical space. In the Neotropics, the global hotspot of avian diversity, only six 100-ha plots, all located in lowland forests of Amazonia, the Guianan shield and Panama, have been inventoried sufficiently. We review the most important lessons learned about Neotropical forest bird communities from those big bird plots and explore opportunities for creating a more extensive network of additional plots to address questions in ecology and conservation, following the model of the existing ForestGEO network of tree plots. Scholarly impact of …
No Honor In Genocide: A Case Study Of Street Renaming And Community Organizing In The Wake Of National Decolonization Efforts, Margo Hill
Journal of Hate Studies
The United States hosts countless streets, structures, and cities named after colonial and military leaders. Although many of these white historical figures, like Robert E. Lee, were revered in their own eras, modern history now acknowledges their involvement in immoral acts such as slavery and genocide. As they recognize that individuals responsible for such traumatic events should no longer be honored, the citizens of many towns and cities across the nation are attempting to rename their public properties. These efforts, however, rarely prove straightforward; the process of renaming a single road, for example, requires a thorough understanding of city ordinances …

Kung Flu And Roof Koreans: Asian/Americans As The Hated Other And Proxies Of Hating In The White Imaginary, Julia R. Decook, Mi Hyun Yoon
Journal of Hate Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic brought about not only political, social, and economic disaster globally, but also rising hate and the exacerbation of social inequity. As the pandemic spread beyond China, hate crimes against Asians skyrocketed in the United States and internationally. Amidst growing xenophobia and a global health crisis, 2020 also marked worldwide Black Lives Matter protests. Memes that featured “Roof Koreans” started being shared during the protests, along with the already racist memes about COVID-19 that targeted Asians. In this essay, we critically analyze memes from the spring and summer of 2020 to examine how Asian/Americans are not only positioned …

“It’S Not Really Hate Crime” – Reframing Hate Crime As Not Police Business” – Police Narratives Of Resistance And Denial, Timothy Bryan, Lorretta Trickett
Journal of Hate Studies
Within a global pandemic and increased questioning of police utility and legitimacy around racism and violence against women and girls (VAWG), this article examines the gap between police policy and practices on hate crime. Based on research with police forces in Canada and the UK, it demonstrates how police officers view hate crime through a policing rather than victim-centred mandate. Without reframing hate crime as a public and community safety issue, hate crime policies and procedures designed to ‘take hate crime seriously’ are unlikely to do just that. Real ‘commitment’ is needed to tackle hate crime as part of the …
Mentalités And The Search For Total History In The Works Of Annalistes, Foucault, And Microhistory, Jason U. Rose
Mentalités And The Search For Total History In The Works Of Annalistes, Foucault, And Microhistory, Jason U. Rose
The Hilltop Review
In this brief essay, the links between the Annales, the works of Michael Foucault, and microhistory are analyzed through the theoretical lens of histoire des mentalités (mentalités). Common threads that link these approaches include the willingness of using outside fields of analysis as well as the willingness to work with vagueness in search of those who Foucault calls, “lost people.” Relatedly, each of these groups and individuals are willing to analyze all aspects of the historical record to fully understand the minds, cultures, and histories of past people. The key to recognizing the relationship of these approaches involve knowing and …

Any question about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s style of rule can be answered by examining both Russia’s past as well as the informal governmental conventions that have historically prevailed. The purpose of this article is to juxtapose the theses of two essential academics: the late historian Richard Pipes’s verdict on Russian autocracy in Russian Conservatism and Its Critics: A Study in Political Culture (2005) and the concept of sistema, authored by political sociologist Alena Ledeneva in Can Russia Modernise? Sistema, Power Networks and Informal Governance (2013). “Why can’t Russia democratize?” is an enduring question. This article will provide a thorough …

Immigration Detention As An Obstacle To Decarceration, Pedro Gerson
Immigration Detention As An Obstacle To Decarceration, Pedro Gerson
San Diego Law Review
Criminal legal reform and measures to reduce carceral populations have received increasing media and public policy attention nationwide. These efforts have mainly ignored a parallel development: the consistent rise in the use of immigration detention over the last decade. This Article bridges that gap by arguing that ongoing efforts to decarcerate states and localities may be foiled by immigration detention. This argument relies on three different descriptive claims. First, much scholarly work has shown the extent to which vested interests have hampered criminal legal reform; these same interests could look to immigration detention as an alternative protection. Second, the extent …

Noncompetes In A Downsizing World, Charles A. Sullivan
San Diego Law Review
As the nation confronts multiple federal and state attacks on employee noncompetition agreements (“NCAs”), one issue has remained relatively obscure: may an employer that terminates a worker for reasons not related to performance nevertheless enforce an NCA? A scattering of cases mostly holds no, and the recent Restatement of Employment Law’s agreement with those decisions is likely to be very influential for the great majority of jurisdictions that have not yet addressed the question but may be forced to in light of massive COVID-related layoffs.
This Article supports the Restatement’s proposed rule, while exploring the fascinating doctrinal and policy issues …
