Public And Counterpublics: Rereading The Case Of Riverside Through Critical Pragmatism. A Response To "Community Insurgency: Constituency, Choice, And The Common Good", Kathleen Knight-Abowitz
Democracy & Education
An article of empirically informed philosophical analysis of charter schooling that features local histories, voices of stakeholders, and an optimistic view on the democratic potential of charter school policies, the original piece presents a compelling, if extreme, case of charter school formation. In this response, I offer an alternative theoretical framing to the case. I argue that the scholarship of constitutional scholars is much less relevant as an interpretive lens on the case than more critical, contemporary pragmatist thinkers. I hope to show in this response how Deweyan political philosophy might have been used throughout the argument to produce a …

Community Insurgency: Constituency, School Choice, And The Common Good, Andrew Pendola, Bryan Mann, David T. Marshall, Jason Bryant
Democracy & Education
This study explores the ways in which the democratic notion of "the people" may be enacted in the school choice arena. Through an investigation of a charter school movement in a rural and segregated district in the Deep South, we explore themes of the constituent paradox that enabled the community to move beyond individual interests towards an expression of the common good. It is argued that for "the people" to be invoked via the democratic claim, they must identify more deeply than the institutions of their representation and recognize an expanded form of individualism defined through participation over consumption.
Ballet And The Emotional Refocusing Of Shakespeare, Olivia Montine
Ballet And The Emotional Refocusing Of Shakespeare, Olivia Montine
Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research
William Shakespeare's works are most well-known on the stage in the form of a play. When the words at the heart of the story are removed and replaced with choreographed movement, it allows the audience to experience the stories, characters, and plots in a more emotionally focused manner. Ballet interpretations of some of Shakespeare's most famous works are often taken on by world-renowned ballet companies, such as The Royal Ballet in London and The New York City Ballet. Companies and choreographers around the world are able to bring new light and depth to the emotional sides of these stories, giving …

In Defense Of The “Moor”: Race, Racism, And Violence In Othello And O, Kyle Gaydo
Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research
Though some scholars have begun to doubt Shakespeare's position as a staple of the Western literary canon, reevaluating his writings in light of current events creates a clearer picture regarding such a status. Othello presents itself as a highly relevant example to confront such issues. As the BLM protests have highlighted historical inequities among Black people, reassessing this play demonstrates deep similarities between early modern and contemporary conceptions of race and racism: that they are based on geography and skin color. Analyzing Othello shows a play reflecting Britain's anxieties regarding their place in the world as a burgeoning hegemonic power. …

BACKGROUND: Genomics-driven discoveries of microbial species have provided extraordinary insights into the biodiversity of human microbiota. In addition, a significant portion of genetic variation between microbiota exists at the subspecies, or strain, level. High-resolution genomics to investigate species- and strain-level diversity and mechanistic studies, however, rely on the availability of individual microbes from a complex microbial consortia. High-throughput approaches are needed to acquire and identify the significant species- and strain-level diversity present in the oral, skin, and gut microbiome. Here, we describe and validate a streamlined workflow for cultivating dominant bacterial species and strains from the skin, oral, and gut …

Transformative Constitutions And Constitutionalism : A New Theory And School Of Jurisprudence From The Global South?, Willy Mutunga
The Transnational Human Rights Review
The article seeks to interrogate, historicize, and problematize what transformative constitutions and their attendant constitutionalism/jurisprudence are. Some of the critical elements of transformative constitutions are analyzed as well as the development of the jurisprudence that is emerging from these constitutions. In the quest for an answer to the question posed, which is the title of the article, Kenya is used as a case-study. Kenya has had a transformative constitution since it was promulgated on 27 August 2010. Its core elements/pillars of transformation are highlighted in this article. Kenya’s experience with the implementation of this Constitution, particularly with regard to the …

No information is currently available on the profile of producers and production process of dry-aged beef in Brazil, to the best of the authors’ knowledge. We surveyed 37 Brazilian companies that were producing dry-aged beef in 2020 to investigate this market. The absolute and relative frequency of responses was calculated to obtain the sum, average, minimum, and maximum values. From the respondents, dry-aged beef was first produced in 2009, and most producers are located in big cities. Most respondents control and monitor chamber temperature; however, humidity and air velocity only are monitored. The aging period (mostly between 22 to 60 …

Hospitality Faculty Research
Social media has had a strong presence in many people’s lives over the last decade. In addition, social media platforms have allowed people to share opinions, provide advice on numerous factors, including where to visit, as well as to stay connected and maintain friendships. The hospitality and tourism industry, however, can make effective use of these powerful tools for marketing purposes, collaboration and information sharing, and service offerings. Reviewing social media followers’ behaviors and interests offers a wealth of information and valuable data for a variety of tourism organizations. This case study focuses on an analysis of the social networks …

Population Growth In Mountain West Cities And Suburbs, 2010-2020, Dielle T. Telada, William E. Brown Jr.
Cities & Metros
COVID-19 altered population growth trends within large cities and the relative growth of cities and suburbs within the nation’s largest metropolitan areas. Brookings senior fellow William H. Frey suggests “that most big cities with populations exceeding 250,000 experienced lower population growth in the year the pandemic began than in the previous year.” This Fact Sheet examines annual growth rates within selected Mountain West metros and suburbs from 2010 and 2020.

Spanish Enrollment And Choice In A Rural Secondary Educational Context, Philip Jess Lehman
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to determine what motivates secondary students to enroll or not in rural high school Spanish classes. Mostly white American graduates from a rural Midwest high school, in the context of a largely white rural town were contacted to determine participation interest in this study. Graduates that chose to participate were asked to complete a reflective video journal and participate in a semi-structured interview. Attribute coding, in vivo coding, and holistic coding were conducted on the reflective journals and semi-structured interviews. Participants detailed numerous variables that were investigated and determined to be involved …

Climate Variability In The Woodbush Granite Grasslands Of South Africa: Effects On Grassland Diversity, M. Muller, F. Siebert, A. Linstädter, D. I. Thompson, S. J. Siebert
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
South African old-growth grasslands are hyper-diverse ecosystems which evolved under naturally occurring rainfall variability. It is predicted that future precipitation patterns will become more variable, which could lead to increased frequencies of extreme and prolonged drought events. This study aimed to investigate the effects of climate variability on plant diversity of the fragmented pristine, mistbelt grasslands of the Woodbush Granite Grasslands (WGG) at Haenertsburg, South Africa. It has been reported that species composition has changed substantially in this area, as disturbance-tolerant species enter these systems or existing competitor species become more dominant. A Temporal Beta-diversity Index (TBI) was used to …

Examining Interviewers’ Ratings Of Respondents’ Health: Does Location In The Survey Matter For Interviewers’ Evaluations Of Respondents?, Dana Garbarski, Nora Cate Schaeffer, Jennifer Dykema
Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Interviewers’ ratings of survey respondents’ health (IRH) are a promising measure of health to include in surveys as a complementary measure to self-rated health. However, our understanding of the factors contributing to IRH remains incomplete. This is the first study to examine whether and how it matters when in the interview interviewers evaluate respondents’ health in a face-to-face survey, in an experiment embedded in the UK Innovation Panel Study. We find that interviewers are more likely to rate the respondent’s health as “excellent” when IRH is rated at the end of the interview compared to the beginning. Drawing from the …

Tallahassee Through The Storebooks, 1843-1863: Antebellum Cotton Prosperity, Clifton Paisley
Florida Historical Quarterly
Few things stirred more interest than the planting, harvesting and marketing of cotton in mid-nineteenth-century Tallahassee. In April 1849, cotton was in the ground and prospects looked bright despite a severe freeze on April 15. There was some apprehension that the unexpected cold had badly damaged and perhaps had destroyed the young plants, but these fears were quickly allayed. The freeze was even more severe in the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, and the damage in those areas indicated a likely increase in cotton prices from the seven or eight cents a pound of recent years. In addition to cotton, …

Towards The Decarbonization Of The Power Sector – A Comparison Of China, The Eu And The Us Based On Historical Data, Michel Noussan, Manfred Hafner, Loyle Campbell, Xinqing Lu, Pier Paolo Raimondi, Erpu Zhu
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This work compares the different decarbonization strategies of the power sector in China, the European Union and the United States, by considering the historical evolution of electricity generation and the current situation. Such a comparison is gaining a broader significance when evaluated with an additional level of geographic detail, by comparing European countries, Chinese provinces, and US states. The differences among these geographies highlight the challenges and opportunities of pushing towards low-carbon technologies, by making clear that regional decarbonization will need to address very different local contexts. Moreover, multiple policy and planning levels are involved, and those mechanisms are different …
Algal Biodiversity Survey Of The Middle Chattahoochee River Using Dna Metabarcoding, Amanda Howell
Algal Biodiversity Survey Of The Middle Chattahoochee River Using Dna Metabarcoding, Amanda Howell
Theses and Dissertations
Aquatic plants play vital roles in water systems by providing ecological services, and one group that is understudied is algae. Algae play a crucial role in water systems as bioindicators and primary producers. They can be challenging to identify with the naked eye, so researchers have been using DNA metabarcoding, where DNA belonging to specific taxa can be isolated and identified from water samples. The objective of this study was to conduct an algal biodiversity survey on the middle Chattahoochee River system in Georgia. Water samples (1L) were filtered and sent to RTL Genomics for sequencing and processing; the data …

The "Earthrise" photograph, taken on the 1968 Apollo 8 mission, became one of the most significant images of the 20th Century. It triggered a profound shift in environmental awareness and the potential for human unity-inspiring the first Earth Day in 1970. Taking inspiration from these events 50 years later, we initiated

In the field of management science and business administration, the case method is gaining ground in research as well as in teaching. Case studies support on the one hand exploratory re-search and on the other hand problem-based teaching. However, we find that case research and case teaching remain unchained in management study programs and propose to close this gap. We identify an untapped potential of boosting the case method by integrating case-based re-search and teaching into a discovery and learning journey of applied science. We suggest em-bedding the ‘Integrated Case Method’ (ICM) in the ecosystem of universities to the end …

Some Thoughts on Hannon's Journey
Hannon's periple is considered, by some authors, as the birth certificate of the written history of the Marne. This observation is due to the almost total lack of written documents on the ancient Marne. Indeed, apart from the Libyan or Amazigh inscriptions and some indirect indications scattered throughout the ancient Greco-Latin and Egyptian works, we do not find any written documents on the ancient Marne. It is therefore very important to be interested in the document of Hannon's periple. However, this document raised and continues to raise several questions and interpretations that we will try …

How to achieve genuine success in agricultural modernization efforts in the savannah region in northern Togo. For about half a century now, the savannah region in northern Togo, has been subject to important and multiform development strategies, laid either by the government, or by the NGOs, or international organization, but with no significant effect on the agricultural systems of production and the standard of living of the population. The authors of the present essay propose here some actions that can efficiently help to the success of …

Ifni: A Small Town, from Fishing to Illegal Immigration
A Spanish enclave until 1969, Sidi Ifni has long played the role of a strategic military base for the Spanish North African colonies (42,000 men in 1950). The only accompanying Spanish economic activity revolved around fishing. The departure of the Spanish caused a real economic downturn followed by a voluntary emigration of the population of Ifni to the Iberian Peninsula and / or to the Canary Islands. This massive emigration and the regression of the fishing activity caused, in the socio-economic absence of …
