A Molecular And Morphological Guide To The Pilose Crayfishes Of Western North America, Nicole G. Principe, Kurt T. Ash, Mark A. Davis, Rachel M. Egly, Eric R. Larson
Western North American Naturalist
The Snake River pilose crayfish Pacifastacus connectens and pilose crayfish Pacifastacus gambelii are sister species endemic to western North America that require increased conservation attention due to apparent range declines. We report results of molecular analyses that sought to clarify where P. connectens and P. gambelii occur relative to each other as well as morphological analyses that sought to help nonspecialists reliably identify these species in the field. We conducted our analyses on voucher specimens recently collected from across the presumed native ranges of both pilose crayfish species. We sequenced the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene of these …

Virus Propagation And System Simulation Based On Cellular Automata Model, Lijuan Zhang, Fuchang Wang, Zhengang Li
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: A susceptible-latent-infected-cured-immune virus spreading model is established according to the characteristics of epidemic transmission and the actual urban spatial map model. Individuals in the environment are regarded as agents, and the spreading mechanism is established according to the principle of cellular. The effects of different strategies and different characteristics of virus spreading on epidemic have been studied. The role and effect of important factors on epidemic prevention and control method are discussed, and the model is validated taking Shijiazhuang epidemic as an example . The results show that the number of initial latent, the infectivity of disease, vaccination proportion …

Keystone Or Cornerstone? A Rejoinder To Verlyn Flieger On The Alleged “Conflicting Sides” Of Tolkien’S Singular Self, Donald T. Williams
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
In “The Arch and the Keystone,” Mythlore 38:1 (Fall/Winter 2019), 5-17, Tolkien scholar Verlyn Flieger argues that the conflicts and contradictions she sees in Tolkien’s essays and fiction do not call for harmonization but rather should be embraced for what they are: “two opposing and conflicting sides of one person, whose contention makes him who he is as well as what he is, the keystone that creates the arch” of The Lord of the Rings (16) out of the friction of the two sides. Her argument has the virtue of helping us to take both darkness and light in the …

Mirrors To The Underworld: Reflective Portals Between Life And Death In The Harry Potter Series, Thea Juneau
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
This article argues that reflective surfaces throughout all seven Harry Potter novels symbolize thresholds between discrete worlds. By displaying Harry’s dead parents on ‘the other side’ of the Mirror of Erised, the text draws on the Myth of Narcissus and various other mythological death-mirrors to create the impression of an inverse afterlife realm where the dead live again, supporting the central themes of death and grief in the series. By drawing upon Lori M. Campbell’s theory of object ‘porters,’ the article shows how the gradual transformation of this framework through more abstract reflections (eyes, creatures, lakes) reveals a deep symbolic …

A Holiday By The Sea: In Search Of Cair Paravel, Reggie Weems
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
The Antrim Coast of Northern Ireland is traditionally recognized as an influence on the fictional, imaginative writing of C.S. Lewis. In particular, Dunluce Castle has often been acknowledged as a possible model for Cair Paravel in The Chronicles of Narnia. But Lewis’s own description of the geography of Cair Paravel in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, coupled with several letters he wrote, suggests the possibility of another, earlier and more influential model for the Narnian capitol castle; that of the Bishop’s Palace and Mussenden Temple at Downhill Demesne, adjacent to Castlerock, Northern Ireland.

Invasive species are increasingly present in our ecosystems and pose a threat to the health of forest ecosystems. Practitioners are tasked with locating these invasive species and finding ways to mitigate their spread and impacts, often through costly field surveys. Meanwhile, researchers are developing remote sensing products to detect the changes in vegetation health and structure that are caused by invasive species, which could aid in early detection and monitoring efforts. Although both groups are working towards similar goals and field data are essential for validating RS products, these groups often work independently. In this paper, we, a group of …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Over the last decades a wealth of information on tropical forage genetic resources has been collated and is accessible to users ranging from farmers, development practitioners and researchers to decision makers and academia, e.g. through online tools such as Tropical Forages: An interactive selection tool (www.tropicalforages.info). However, while genetic diversity is being conserved by international gene banks, adoption of improved tropical forages is still far from reaching its full potential. Major bottlenecks in our view include lack of awareness of available forage genetic resources, confirmation of adaptation in a wide range of bio-physical, socio-economic, political and cultural contexts …

Exploring The Information Base Needed For Sustainable Management Of Rangeland Resources For Improved Livelihoods, K. I. Johnsen, M. Niamir-Fuller, A. Bensada, A. Waters-Bayer
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Pastoralism is one of the most sustainable production systems worldwide and plays a major role in safeguarding ecosystem services and biodiversity in rangelands. The unique biological and cultural diversity of rangelands contributes to goods, services and knowledge that benefit humans also beyond the herding communities.
Yet data currently available on grassland, forestry, agriculture and livestock are inadequate for informing policymaking on rangeland-based livestock systems. A review of global environmental assessments, online databases, peer-reviewed literature and international project documents showed that available information seldom disaggregates rangelands from other ecosystems or pastoralists from other rural dwellers. Few peer-reviewed publications address pastoral and …

Lessons From The Pandemic: Engaging Wicked Problems With Transdisciplinary Deliberation, Miles C. Coleman, Susana C. Santos, Joy M. Cypher, Claude Krummenacher, Robert Fleming
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Some crises, such as those brought on or exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, are wicked problems—large, complex problems with no immediate answer. As such, they make rich centerpieces for learning with respect to public deliberation and issue-based dialogue. This essay reflects on an experimental, transdisciplinary health and science communication course entitled Comprehending COVID-19. The course represents a collaborative effort among 14 faculty representing 10 different academic departments to create a resource for teaching students how to deliberate the pandemic, despite its attending, oversaturated, fake-news-infused, infodemic. We offer transdisciplinary deliberation as a pedagogical framework to expand communication repertoires in ways useful …

Unpacking Privilege In Pandemic Pedagogy: Social Media Debates On Power Dynamics Of Online Education, Roy Schwartzman
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
As one of the world’s major social media hubs dedicated to online education during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Facebook mega-group Pandemic Pedagogy provides a panoramic perspective of the key concerns educators and students face amid a public health crisis that forces redefinition of what constitutes effective education. After several months of instruction under pandemic conditions, two central themes emerged as the most extensively discussed and the most intensively contested: (1) rigor versus accommodation in calibrating standards for students, and (2) ways to improve engagement during classes conducted through videoconferencing, especially via Zoom. Both themes reveal deeply embedded systems of privilege …

Desertification Of Iran In The Early Twenty-First Century: Assessment Using Climate And Vegetation Indices, Dameneh H Eskandari, Hamid Gholami, Matt W. Telfer, Jesús Rodrigo Comino, Adrian L. Collins, John D. Jansen
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
AbstractRemote sensing of specific climatic and biogeographical parameters is an effective means of evaluating the large-scale desertification status of drylands affected by negative human impacts. Here, we identify and analyze desertification trends in Iran for the period 2001–2015 via a combination of three indices for vegetation (NPP—net primary production, NDVI—normalized difference vegetation index, LAI—leaf area index) and two climate indices (LST—land surface temperature, P—precipitation). We combine these indices to identify and map areas of Iran that are susceptible to land degradation. We then apply a simple linear regression method, the Mann–Kendall non-parametric test, and the Theil–Sen estimator to identify long-term …

Desire And The Work It Does: Alterity And Exogamy In A Kotiria Origin Myth From The Northwest Amazon Of Brazil, Janet M. Chernela
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
In terms of the pan-Amazonian social paradigm that transforms affines into kin and assimilates them into the consanguineal unit, Eastern Tukanoans must be regarded as exceptional. This paper explores a foundation myth that allows us to better understand relations of self and Other, incest and exogamy, and violence and amity among the Eastern Tukanoan-speaking Kotiria. The narrative provides a heretofore-absent foundation for Tukanoan affinity, revealing complications and nuance in Kotiria notions of alterity and the generative role of Desire in its transformation. It is a synthesis not from nature, but from poesis; not from trust, but from theft; not from …

Land use conversion is generally accompanied by large changes in soil organic carbon (SOC). SOC influences soil erodibility through its broad control on aggregate stability, soil structure and infiltration capacity. However, soil erodibility is also influenced by soil properties, clay mineralogy and other human activities. This study aimed to evaluate soil organic carbon as proxy of soil erosion risk in the Nyumba ya Mungu (NYM) catchment in Northern Tanzania. Soil organic carbon (SOC) was measured by an AgroCares scanner from which the soil organic matter (SOM) was derived using the conversional van Bemmelen factor of 1.72. A regression analysis performed …

The majority of residential and commercial buildings use appliances powered with fossil fuels for space and/or water heating. Collectively, these appliances—most of which run on natural gas—emit substantial quantities of a variety of harmful air pollutants, including particulate matter, nitrogen oxides (“NOx”), and carbon dioxide. Fossil-fuel appliances in the U.S. emitted over 425,000 tons of NOx in 2017—almost three times the amount attributable to gas-fired power plants in that year. And fossil-fuel combustion in residential and commercial buildings accounted for almost 10% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2019—only slightly less than gas power plants. Yet while the U.S. …
