Moving On Up: Vertical Distribution Shifts In Rocky Reef Fish Species During Climate-Driven Decline In Dissolved Oxygen From 1995 To 2009, Erin L. Meyer-Gutbrod, Li Kui, Mary Nishimoto, Linda Snook, Milton Love Sep 2021

Moving On Up: Vertical Distribution Shifts In Rocky Reef Fish Species During Climate-Driven Decline In Dissolved Oxygen From 1995 To 2009, Erin L. Meyer-Gutbrod, Li Kui, Mary Nishimoto, Linda Snook, Milton Love

Faculty Publications

Anthropogenic climate change has resulted in warming temperatures and reduced oxygen concentrations in the global oceans. Much remains unknown on the impacts of reduced oxygen concentrations on the biology and distribution of marine fishes. In the Southern California Channel Islands, visual fish surveys were conducted frequently in a manned submersible at three rocky reefs between 1995 and 2009. This area is characterized by a steep bathymetric gradient, with the surveyed sites Anacapa Passage, Footprint and Piggy Bank corresponding to depths near 50, 150 and 300 m. Poisson models were developed for each fish species observed consistently in this network of …

How To Implement Drones And Machine Learning To Reduce Time, Costs, And Dangers Associated With Landmine Detection, Jasper Baur, Gabriel Steinberg, Alex Nikulin Ph.D., Kenneth Chiu Ph.D., Timothy De Smet Ph.D. Sep 2021

How To Implement Drones And Machine Learning To Reduce Time, Costs, And Dangers Associated With Landmine Detection, Jasper Baur, Gabriel Steinberg, Alex Nikulin Ph.D., Kenneth Chiu Ph.D., Timothy De Smet Ph.D.

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Two rapidly emerging technologies revolutionizing scientific problem solving are unpiloted aerial systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones, and deep learning algorithms.1 Our study combines these two technologies to provide a powerful auxiliary tool for scatterable landmine detection. These munitions are traditionally challenging for clearance operations due to their wide area of impact upon deployment, small size, and random minefield orientation. Our past work focused on developing a reliable UAS capable of detecting and identifying individual elements of PFM-1 minefields to rapidly assess wide areas for landmine contamination, minefield orientation, and possible minefield overlap. In our most recent proof-of-concept …

Massive And Rapid Predominantly Volcanic Co2 Emission During The End-Permian Mass Extinction, Ying Cui, Mingsong Li, Elsbeth E. Van Soelen, Francien Peterse, Wolfram M. Kürschner Sep 2021

Massive And Rapid Predominantly Volcanic Co2 Emission During The End-Permian Mass Extinction, Ying Cui, Mingsong Li, Elsbeth E. Van Soelen, Francien Peterse, Wolfram M. Kürschner

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The end-Permian mass extinction event (∼252 Mya) is associated with one of the largest global carbon cycle perturbations in the Phanerozoic and is thought to be triggered by the Siberian Traps volcanism. Sizable carbon isotope excursions (CIEs) have been found at numerous sites around the world, suggesting massive quantities of 13C-depleted CO2 input into the ocean and atmosphere system. The exact magnitude and cause of the CIEs, the pace of CO2 emission, and the total quantity of CO2, however, remain poorly known. Here, we quantify the CO2 emission in an Earth system model based on new compound-specific carbon isotope …

From Design To Denial- An Environmental Histroy Of The United States Chemical Weapons Program, William Nelson Connelly Iii Sep 2021

From Design To Denial- An Environmental Histroy Of The United States Chemical Weapons Program, William Nelson Connelly Iii

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

In 1993, the affluent Washington D.C. neighborhood of Spring Valley was unaware of what lurked beneath their carefully manicured lawns and million-dollar homes. Contractors hired by a resident to build an inground pool suddenly found themselves short of breath and half the crew had to be rushed to the hospital suffering respiratory distress, internal blistering of the lungs, and vision problems. The symptoms they exhibited matched all the characteristics of the World War I era blister agent lewisite. This thesis is an environmental study of chemical weapons that aims to contribute to the overall history of these weapons and their …

A Collaborative Approach To Cultural Resource Risk Assessment, Preservation, And Prioritization: A Case Study From Sauvie Island, Oregon, Phillip James Daily Sep 2021

A Collaborative Approach To Cultural Resource Risk Assessment, Preservation, And Prioritization: A Case Study From Sauvie Island, Oregon, Phillip James Daily

Dissertations and Theses

New and increasing threats to cultural heritage resources have pushed archaeologists, land managers, and Indigenous peoples to develop strategies to identify at-risk resources, determine condition, vulnerabilities, and value of said resources, and then provide mitigation and preservation prioritizations and recommendations for the future. One such strategy is the risk assessment approach. Typically, to guide ongoing and future management of vulnerable cultural resources, risk assessments consider preexisting archaeological data, alongside geomorphological and hydrological landform characteristics, to prioritize sites for preservation. While such assessments have been conducted around the globe, they have not been widely applied on the Lower Columbia of Oregon …

Finding The “Heart” In The Green: Conducting A Bibliometric Analysis To Emphasize The Need For Connecting Emotions With Biophilic Urban Planning, Christopher Tirri, Hunter Swanson, Mahbubur Meenar Sep 2021

Finding The “Heart” In The Green: Conducting A Bibliometric Analysis To Emphasize The Need For Connecting Emotions With Biophilic Urban Planning, Christopher Tirri, Hunter Swanson, Mahbubur Meenar

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

Although there is a robust body of literature exploring the relationship between biophilic urban planning (BUP) and public health and well-being, there is a dearth of scholarship on the emotional components of BUP. It is crucial to understand these sentiment-related elements, so planners can assign “human value” to green spaces as a strategy for emphasizing the need to thoughtfully implement and properly maintain them in urban environments. Furthermore, humans’ emotional experiences with green spaces may also reveal hidden or unexpected functions of those spaces. To confirm this lack of emphasis on emotions in BUP, we used Scopus to conduct a …

Becoming A Place Of Unrest : Environmental Crisis And Ecophenomenological Praxis, Robert Booth Sep 2021

Becoming A Place Of Unrest : Environmental Crisis And Ecophenomenological Praxis, Robert Booth

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

The key to mitigating the environmental crisis isn’t just based on science; it depends upon a profound philosophical revision of how we think about and behave in relation to the world.

Our ongoing failure to interrupt the environmental crisis in a meaningful way stems, in part, from how we perceive the environment—what Robert Booth calls the "more-than-human world.” Anthropocentric presumptions of this world, inherited from natural science, have led us to better scientific knowledge about environmental problems and more science-based—yet inadequate—practical “solutions.” That’s not enough, Booth argues. Rather, he asserts that we must critically and self-reflexively revise how we perceive …

Lone Star Wars: Lngs, Communities, And Globalization Versus Local Resistance In The Laguna Madre Region Of Coastal South Texas, Terence Garrett, Arthur Sementelli Sep 2021

Lone Star Wars: Lngs, Communities, And Globalization Versus Local Resistance In The Laguna Madre Region Of Coastal South Texas, Terence Garrett, Arthur Sementelli

Political Science Faculty Publications

Purpose: to theoretically contextualize the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) issue using Bauman and Debord. More generally, this research provides a theoretical and qualitative context to understand the LNG issue in discussions of environmental management, globalization, and local government.

Design/methodology/approach: this article uses Boje’s narrative case study approach to analyze the politics around localized resistance movements to LNG production in the Rio Grande Valley. Specifically, the study examines data collected from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), personal interviews, and public declarations (newspapers, blogs, social media) to create an historiographical account of LNGs in the RGV to analyze the Laguna Madre …

Otoliths Of South-Western Australian Fish: A Photographic Catalogue, Chris Dowling, Kim Smith, Elaine Lek, Joshua Brown Sep 2021

Otoliths Of South-Western Australian Fish: A Photographic Catalogue, Chris Dowling, Kim Smith, Elaine Lek, Joshua Brown

Fisheries Research Reports

Due to the species-specific nature of otoliths and given they are often the only part of the fish preserved when fish die, otolith catalogues can be used in numerous applications, such as diet studies in fish eating animals, including pinnipeds, fish and sea birds; archaeological purposes such as reconstructing indigenous people’s diets from otoliths found in middens or evolutionary history of fish species by comparing fossilized otoliths. Given the unique mixture of subtropical and temperate fish, including many endemic species that occur off the southwest corner of WA having a catalogue for this area is extremely important for people working …

Laws: Prospects Of Regulation, Sam M. Arkin Sep 2021

Laws: Prospects Of Regulation, Sam M. Arkin

Glatfelter Gazette

Lethally Autonomous Weapons Systems are a new emerging technology within the international arena, yet prospects of regulation have scarcely been discussed. This means that this technology, if further developed without regulation, could cause significant casualties and violations of International Humanitarian Law. While this hasn't happened yet, it is important to have these discussions now because later may be too late. This technology is developing fast and is going relatively unnoticed or not understood by many.
