A Simulation Model For Optimal Bidding Decisions, Rayan H. Assaad, Muaz O. Ahmed, Islam H. El-Adaway, Amr Elsayegh Jan 2021

A Simulation Model For Optimal Bidding Decisions, Rayan H. Assaad, Muaz O. Ahmed, Islam H. El-Adaway, Amr Elsayegh

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The lowest bid approach is the most used technique in the US construction procurement environment since competitive bidding is a legal requirement in the public sector. Despite that many research studies were directed to help contractors in taking different bidding decisions, there is still insufficient research efforts that equipped contractors with decision-support tools to decide on optimal bid values. Hence, this paper takes previous research works a step further by developing a simulation model that can be adopted to determine the bid decision that would result in winning more projects. To this end, a methodology composed of multiple steps was …

Implementation Of Dual System Hypothesis In Speech-Language Pathology, Kelsey Hyde Jan 2021

Implementation Of Dual System Hypothesis In Speech-Language Pathology, Kelsey Hyde

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Over the course of the past few decades, dual system hypothesis has become the prevailing model of bilingual language development. This replaced the previously accepted unitary system hypothesis after decades of debate and research. It has also had an impact on the understanding of bilingual literacy development in children. This qualitative study investigates how this hypothesis influences and informs the work of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who work with bilingual children. For this study, four bilingual SLPs who work with bilingual children in various settings were interviewed regarding their views and education on bilingual language development for the purpose of understanding …

The Memory Of Mythmaking: Transgenerational Trauma And Disability As A Collective Experience In Afrofuturist Storytelling, Jessica Tapley Jan 2021

The Memory Of Mythmaking: Transgenerational Trauma And Disability As A Collective Experience In Afrofuturist Storytelling, Jessica Tapley

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This project closely examines the relationship between transgenerational trauma, disability, and myth, particularly within Black speculative fiction, Afrofuturism, and Africanfuturism. Through the lenses of critical race theory, trauma theory, disability studies, and feminist theory, I will closely analyze how myth functions across five Black speculative fiction novels. I argue that disability appears as a common thread throughout each of these novels as a unique part of Black history and experience. Disability culture specifically offers community interdependence, a rejection of body and mind binaries, and a rejection of hierarchies in the pursuit of accessibility. I further demonstrate how myth centers racial …

Mindfulness Of What? Impact Of Awareness- And Acceptance-Focused Mindful Eating Techniques On Eating Outcomes, Jennifer Battles Jan 2021

Mindfulness Of What? Impact Of Awareness- And Acceptance-Focused Mindful Eating Techniques On Eating Outcomes, Jennifer Battles

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: Significant debate exists over the conceptualization of mindfulness even though mindfulness-based interventions are widely utilized to treat obesity and problematic eating behaviors. Little research has directly compared these theorized components of mindfulness in the context of eating. The purpose of the current study was to understand the relative importance of two components of mindfulness (i.e., awareness and acceptance) on laboratory eating outcomes. Methods: An experiment was conducted with 103 obese participants (Mage = 22.38, SD = 6.82; 64.1% female, 44.6% White, MBMI = 35.42, SD = 7.68) comparing two mindful eating inductions (i.e., awareness only and …

A Systematic Review Of The Efficacy Of Hydroxychloroquine In Covid-19 Patients, Soumy Maria Joseph Jan 2021

A Systematic Review Of The Efficacy Of Hydroxychloroquine In Covid-19 Patients, Soumy Maria Joseph

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Hydroxychloroquine is a highly effective and commonly used disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMRD) for the treatment of various autoimmune diseases. Recently this medication received lot of attention in the medical world as a potential treatment for COVID-19. The goal of this research is to perform a systematic review of literature to focus on the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine in COVID-19 patients and any evidence of adverse reactions. The database used to conduct this research was PubMed, using four keywords and phrases: effects, side effects, adverse events, and serious adverse events of hydroxychloroquine in COVID-19 patients. Out of the 15 articles selected for …

Aerothermal Uncertainty Quantification Of Deployable Entry Technologies Using Multi-Fidelity Modeling, Mario Santos, Serhat Hosder, Thomas K. West Jan 2021

Aerothermal Uncertainty Quantification Of Deployable Entry Technologies Using Multi-Fidelity Modeling, Mario Santos, Serhat Hosder, Thomas K. West

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The objective of this work was to investigate the use of a co-Kriging based multi-fidelity modeling approach with a Monte Carlo uncertainty quantification analyses of surface heating on hypersonic inflatable aerodynamic decelerator vehicles and adaptable, deployable entry placement technology vehicles in Mars entry. A previously developed co-Kriging based multi-fidelity modeling approach was used to model the laminar and turbulent convective and radiative heat fluxes along the vehicle. Monte Carlo analyses of surface heat load for nine different vehicle nose radii was performed for both vehicles, assuming the same thermal protection system is used for both vehicles. The maximum heat loads …

[Introduction To] Race, Removal, And The Right To Remain : Migration And The Making Of The United States / Samantha Seeley., Samantha Seeley Jan 2021

[Introduction To] Race, Removal, And The Right To Remain : Migration And The Making Of The United States / Samantha Seeley., Samantha Seeley

Bookshelf

This work explores the conflicts over migration at the center of the social, political, intellectual, and physical landscape of the early United States. Examining the voluntary and forced migrations of Indigenous, African American, and Anglo Americans in the decades immediately following the Revolution, Samantha Seeley argues that the United States took shape as a white republic through contentious negotiations over who could move and where, who could remain and how. Removal was not sweeping, top-down federal legislation. Instead, it was a battle fought on multiple fronts. It encompassed tribal leaders' attempts to expel white settlers from Native lands and African …

Role And Responsibilities Of Supervisors In The Sustainable Return To Work Of Workers Following A Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorder, Iuliana Nastasia, Marie-France Coutu, Romain Rives, Jessica Dubé, Sarah Gaspard, Audrey Quilicot Jan 2021

Role And Responsibilities Of Supervisors In The Sustainable Return To Work Of Workers Following A Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorder, Iuliana Nastasia, Marie-France Coutu, Romain Rives, Jessica Dubé, Sarah Gaspard, Audrey Quilicot

Études primaires

Purpose Supervisors play an important role during the return to work (RTW) of injured workers. Yet little research has been done on the actions associated with this role or the contexts in which they are taken. The purpose of this study was to develop courses of action to promote supervisors’ involvement in the process aimed at achieving sustainable RTW for workers following a work-related musculoskeletal disorder (MSD), and to verify their pertinence, feasibility, and applicability in practice. Methods A two-phase qualitative method was used. (1) Secondary content analysis of 46 interviews of 14 workers post-MSD and 32 other actors in …

Novel Adaptive Sampling Algorithm For Pod-Based Non-Intrusive Reduced Order Model, Jiachen Wang, Xiaosong Du, Joaquim R.R.A. Martins Jan 2021

Novel Adaptive Sampling Algorithm For Pod-Based Non-Intrusive Reduced Order Model, Jiachen Wang, Xiaosong Du, Joaquim R.R.A. Martins

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) based reduced-order model (ROM) has been an effective tool for flow field prediction in the engineering industry. The sample selection in the design space for POD basis construction affects the ROM performance sensitively. Adaptive sampling can significantly reduce the number of samples to achieve the required model accuracy. In this work, we propose a novel adaptive sampling algorithm, called conjunction sampling strategy, which is based on proven strategies. The conjunction sampling strategy is demonstrated on airfoil flow field prediction within the transonic regime. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed strategy by running 10 trials …

Remediation In Foreign Bribery Settlements: The Foundations Of A New Approach, Samuel J. Hickey Jan 2021

Remediation In Foreign Bribery Settlements: The Foundations Of A New Approach, Samuel J. Hickey

Chicago Journal of International Law

A handful of nations spearhead the global anti-corruption regime through the transnational enforcement of foreign bribery laws. These laws prohibit corporations with a connection to the enforcing nation from paying or offering bribes to the officials of a foreign nation. Enforcement agencies construe the extraterritorial application of these laws broadly, establishing their global prominence. The most notable example is the United States Department of Justice’s enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977 (FCPA). Enforcement agencies typically resolve investigations against corporations through deferred prosecution agreements and other consensual settlement mechanisms known generally as non-trial resolutions. Fines and penalties paid …
