The Case Of The Dishonest Scrivener: Gouverneur Morris And The Creation Of The Federalist Constitution, William M. Treanor Jan 2021

The Case Of The Dishonest Scrivener: Gouverneur Morris And The Creation Of The Federalist Constitution, William M. Treanor

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

At the end of the Constitutional Convention, the delegates appointed the Committee of Style and Arrangement to bring together the textual provisions that the Convention had previously agreed to and to prepare a final constitution. Pennsylvania delegate Gouverneur Morris drafted the document for the Committee, and, with few revisions and little debate, the Convention adopted Morris’s draft. For more than two hundred years, questions have been raised as to whether Morris covertly altered the text in order to advance his constitutional vision, but modern legal scholars and historians studying the Convention have either ignored the issue or concluded that Morris …

Equilibrium And Kinetic Study On The Biosorption Of Trypan Blue From Aqueous Solutions Using Avocado Seed Powder, Tamer T. El-Idreesy, Omar Khoshala, Amin Firouzi, Hany A. Elazab

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This research aims to investigate the removal of trypan blue dye from aqueous solutions by employing ground avocado seeds powder, a low-cost biowaste adsorbent (biosorbent), under various experimental conditions. The effect of contact time, initial dye concentration, and adsorbent dose on dye removal were studied. The experimental kinetic data were fitted to pseudo-first order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Results imply that adsorption of trypan blue on the avocado seed adsorbent nicely followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Equilibrium isotherms were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, where Langmuir isotherm described the isotherm data with a high-correlation coefficient (R2=0.9948) closer to unity, …

Predicting Question Deletion And Assessing Question Quality In Social Q&A Sites Using Weakly Supervised Deep Neural Networks, Souvick Ghosh Jan 2021

Predicting Question Deletion And Assessing Question Quality In Social Q&A Sites Using Weakly Supervised Deep Neural Networks, Souvick Ghosh

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Community question answering (CQA) sites, which use the power of collective knowledge, have emerged as popular destinations for complex and personalized questions that require human-human interactions and multiple rounds of clarifications between the asker and the answerer. In this paper, we undertook a threefold task: First, we developed a deep neural network model to automatically predict the questions that are likely to be deleted by the moderators. Second, we hypothesized that there exists a relationship between the question quality and its probability of being deleted by the forum moderators. We developed a deep model using deleted questions and used it …

Herbicide Screening In Industrial Hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.) Production, Joseph Eric Mettler Jan 2021

Herbicide Screening In Industrial Hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.) Production, Joseph Eric Mettler

Plant Sciences

Lack of labeled herbicides for industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) production in the U.S. accentuates urgency to identify herbicides for weed control. Weed competition reduced seed yield by 25 to 32%. Pre- and post-emergence herbicide experiments were conducted to evaluate hemp tolerance to herbicides and support efforts for herbicide registrations. For post-emergence herbicides, hemp response to clopyralid (105 g ae ha-1) and bromoxynil (280 g ae ha-1) exhibited the lowest phytotoxicity, up to 38%, with no reduction of yield compared with the hand-weeded check. Pre-emergence herbicides were more viable options because pendimethalin (1120 g ai ha-1), trifluralin (840 g ai …

Groundhog Law, Richard Delgado Jan 2021

Groundhog Law, Richard Delgado

Articles

An unexpected question from a conference participant sends Rodrigo in search of the professor's counsel. A young stranger from another discipline had asked him why law seems never to advance and posited that the reason may be that, lone among disciplines, law is uninterested in advancing human knowledge. The questioner even raised the possibility that law may not belong on a university campus along with departments such as Physics, English, and History, and might well consider relocating to community colleges where it would find a disciplinary home along with courses on welding, automobile mechanics, and high-speed cooking.

Rodrigo, who at …

Beyond Bail, Jenny E. Carroll Jan 2021

Beyond Bail, Jenny E. Carroll

Articles

From the proliferation of community bail funds to the implementation of new risk assessment tools to the limitation and even eradication of monetary bail, reform movements have altered the landscape of pretrial detention. Yet, reform movements have paid little attention to the emerging reality of a post-monetary-bail world. With monetary bail an unavailable or disfavored option, courts have come to rely increasingly on nonmonetary conditions of release. These nonmonetary conditions can be problematic for many of the same reasons that monetary bail is problematic and can inject additional bias into the pretrial system.

In theory, nonmonetary conditions offer increased opportunities …

By A Thread: Adapting And Understanding The Literary Past Through Contemporary Costume, Sherry Bollero Jan 2021

By A Thread: Adapting And Understanding The Literary Past Through Contemporary Costume, Sherry Bollero

Theses and Dissertations

For over four hundred years, Shakespeare’s plays have been adapted from text to the visual realizations on the stage and later the screen. Scholarship has attended to the playscript and the performance, but it has largely neglected the position of the costume as a bridge between the literary past and contemporary adaptation. This project contends that costumes as adaptations themselves play a significant role in contemporary constructions of the literary past. In particular, the project attends to the contribution of costumes in the visualization of Shakespeare’s histories on screen. To explore this topic, the project considers several aspects. Specifically, the …

Narratological Limitations Of Telling Trauma: A Case Study Of Lorena Bobbitt And Sexual Assault, Brittney Christy Jan 2021

Narratological Limitations Of Telling Trauma: A Case Study Of Lorena Bobbitt And Sexual Assault, Brittney Christy

Theses and Dissertations

There are many barriers that women face when they tell their stories of sexual assault, namely—that they will not be believed. A number of factors hinder believability, many of them related to the broader relationship that narrative plays in our lives. Narrative expectation, cultivated by the texts we consume, shapes what we find believable or “tellable” in the words of scholar Amy Shuman. Difficult narratives are often rendered “untellable” because they contain unfamiliar patterns or because they fall outside recognizable frameworks of understanding. Sexual assault narratives are rendered untellable for many reasons, including social misunderstanding of the problem and the …

Unmanned Aircraft, or drones, represent a modern-day frontier, one that is, as yet, neither fully explored nor fully developed. The state of North Dakota has moved into the frontier and is deeply involved in its exploration and development. The state has invested tens of millions of dollars in the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) industry, an investment that has helped to attract tens of millions of additional dollars from military sources and from private business firms. The University of North Dakota’s John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, long-recognized as among the leading aviation schools in the nation, is at the …

Eating Disorder Symptoms On Female Collegiate-Level Athletes And Non-Athletes, Kennedy Victoria Kidd Jan 2021

Eating Disorder Symptoms On Female Collegiate-Level Athletes And Non-Athletes, Kennedy Victoria Kidd

Theses and Dissertations

In previous research, it found that the risk of developing an eating disorder (ED) is much higher in females compared to males (Dunca, Ziobrowski & Nicol, 2017; Raevuori, Keski-Rahkonen, & Hoek, 2014; Lewinsohn, Seeley, Moerk, & Striegel-Moore, 2002). Similarly, research has shown that the prevalence of EDs is much higher in female athletes compared to male athletes (Johnson, Powers, & Dick, 1999). Despite the risk of developing an ED being higher in females, research has not provided a strong understanding of the prevalence of EDs comparing female student-athletes and female student non-athletes. There is research that shows that athletes may …

An Exploration Of Sexual Consent, Sexual Non-Consent, And Nonverbal Sexual Consent Communication Behaviors, Amongst Community Stakeholders., Brent Stewart

Theses and Dissertations

Sexual Consent is a central concept in the field sexual violence and sexual violence prevention (Beres, 2007). However, despite disproportional rates of sexual violence amongst LGBT+ community, currently our understanding sexual consent and its practice is primarily focused on heterosexual encounters of traditional college aged students (CDC, 2017, Muehlenhard, Humphreys, Jozkowski & Peterson, 2016). The current study utilized the Delphi method to develop a better understanding of sexual consent, sexual non-consent, and nonverbal sexual consent communication behaviors among two distinct groups: sexual researchers and men who have sex with men (MSM). Thirty-five panelists (13 researchers 22 MSM) completed one- three …

Teacher Perceptions Of Parent-Teacher Communications And Practice, Misty Rose Tomchuk Jan 2021

Teacher Perceptions Of Parent-Teacher Communications And Practice, Misty Rose Tomchuk

Theses and Dissertations

It has been established in prior research that parent involvement and school-family partnerships have the potential to positively impact student achievement; however, creating and maintaining positive and productive parent-teacher communication can be difficult. Since teachers function as the link between school and the home, there is an increased need to study the perspectives and experiences of teachers. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between teacher perceptions of parent-teacher relationships, teacher conversation competence, and teacher communication frequency with parents.

This study involved an online survey distributed to 234 participants via Amazon Mechanical Turk. The following results were …
