Connections During Times Of Change: The Interplay Between Gratitude Communication, Well-Being And Resilience, Aubrey Carlene Moore
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
This pilot study investigates the relationships between gratitude communication, well-being, and resilience in times of change. The 2019 coronavirus, COVID-19, brought on a global pandemic that continues to impact people’s lives daily. However, due to continuous changes, lockdowns, social distancing, mask mandates and more, people have found other ways to stay connected in lieu of face to face communication. This study aims to understand better how people are moving forward during these challenging, ever-changing times. Using an online survey and previously established measures including the Gratitude Questionnaire (GQ-6), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and the 14-item Resilience Scale (RS-14), …
Overcoming Loneliness: First-Generation Slavic Immigrants' Experience With Loneliness In The Inland Northwest, Charles C. Crook
Overcoming Loneliness: First-Generation Slavic Immigrants' Experience With Loneliness In The Inland Northwest, Charles C. Crook
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
The plight of loneliness has caused devastation to many social and cultural groups’ well-being. Scholars have analyzed and documented its adverse health such as suicide (Stravynski and Boyer 2001), Alzheimer’s disease (Wilson et al. 2007), depression (Erzen and Çikrikci 2018), immune system complications (Hawkley and Cacioppo 2003), and cardiovascular complications (Hawley and Cacioppo 2003). Some compare its health impacts to smoking 15 cigarettes a day (Health Resources and Services Administration 2019), while others emphasize how loneliness compels people to internet addiction (Ayas and Horzum 2013) and alcohol abuse (Åkerlind and Hörnquist 1992). Among the most susceptible populations to loneliness are …

The Italian Model To Fight Covid-19: Regional Cooperation, Regulatory Inflation, And The Cost Of One-Size-Fits-All Lockdown Measures, Fernanda Giorgia Nicola Dr.
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
What has come to be known worldwide as the Italian model to fight COVID-19 was a series of governmental measures undertaken in early 2020 to reduce the contagion of a deadly virus ravaging the northern regions of Italy—especially Lombardy, Veneto, and Piedmont. These measures included quarantine or lockdown throughout the Italian territory, together with the revamping of hospitals, followed by economic recovery packages to address the standstill of the national economy. This Article focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of the Italian model. By highlighting the initial missteps, we can understand how this turned into a productive national and regional …

Neuromuscular Activation During Balance Testing In Young, Middle-Aged, And Older Adults, Miranda Lea Ripplinger
Neuromuscular Activation During Balance Testing In Young, Middle-Aged, And Older Adults, Miranda Lea Ripplinger
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Aging results in structural changes that inhibit functional balance with daily activities. The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship of neuromuscular activation of the upper leg to balance and fall risk in the adult population. Eighteen males (32.44yrs ± 14.06) and 32 females (41.88yrs ± 18.07) completed strength and balance assessments with surface electromyography. Results indicated a significant age effect on the Clinical Test of Sensory Integration and Balance score (p = 0.019), and a significant gender effect on knee flexion torque (p < 0.001) and knee extension torque (p < 0.001). Linear regression determined a significant association between reduced muscle coactivation, gender, and age to predict Fall Risk Sway Velocity Index scores (p = 0.010, R2 = .218). Middle-aged adults had worse balance scores, and females demonstrated weaker muscular strength; reduced neuromuscular coactivation, age, and gender predicted 21.8% of the variability in Fall Risk scores.

Barriers And Strategies To Optimize Diabetes Management In Emerging Adults With Type 1 Diabetes, Bailee Catherine Sawyer
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Emerging adults aged 18 – 30 years with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) make unique lifestyle choices that can create complications for disease management. The objective of this study was to identify barriers and strategies for management of T1DM in young adults (YA). A non-experimental, causal-comparative, observational cross-sectional study using both quantitative and qualitative methods was utilized for the study. In May 2020, YA with T1DM (n = 115; mean age diagnosed 14 ± 7.23) aged 18 – 30 years (64% in age group 25 – 30 years) were recruited to complete the Managing Diabetes in Young Adults Survey. Participant self-reported …

Altering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Cpr) Education For Allied Health Care Providers Based On Self-Reported Experiences With Recertification, Kassiann Deen Landin
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Health care providers (nurses, athletic trainers, and emergency medical services [EMS] personnel) are expected to perform high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) regardless of their confidence. Also, regardless the design of CPR recertification courses, it is expected that health care providers perform high-quality CPR. The first goal of the study pertained to self-efficacy. This research investigated health care professionals reports of self-efficacy of CPR performance with the current CPR guidelines for a specific amount of time as well as over athletic equipment. Secondly, this research explored differences in recertification expectations and educational approaches between professions. Ninety-nine health care professionals (36 nurses, 36 …

Loyalty Reward Programs By Brands Partnering With Sports Teams: Do Fans Prefer Team-Related Benefits?, Clara Loquier, Vassilis Dalakas
AMTP Proceedings 2021
This study used a sample of French consumers that included highly identified fans of French soccer club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), low-identification fans, and non-fans, to examine their responses to loyalty reward benefits for different brands. The reward benefits were either tied to the team (e.g., team-related experiences) or not (e.g., vouchers for the brand). Results showed that highly identified fans found the team-related benefits more desirable than the low-identification fans and non-fans. Also, highly identified fans found several of the team-related benefits more desirable than the benefits not relating to the team. The findings provide useful managerial insight regarding the …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Appalachian region is a rural swath of mountainous terrain home to a historically distinct culture. The region’s population suffers from a multitude of health issues and disparities. Notably, the region also experiences a major healthcare provider shortage despite the fact that states, like West Virginia, produce per capita, a high volume of physicians. Appalachia, and particularly West Virginia, also suffers from a number of educational disparities, which culminates into low numbers of college graduates within the population. There is a plethora of research that has explored the first-generation college student, students from rural and Appalachian backgrounds, first-generation and rural …
