Teaching Students With Profound Intellectual And Multiple Disabilities, Tami Lynn Hardesty-Jaynes
Teaching Students With Profound Intellectual And Multiple Disabilities, Tami Lynn Hardesty-Jaynes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractIn the United States, students with disabilities are protected by federal and state law, with rigorous learning standards mandated for all students. Research on the education of students with severe disabilities has focused on students on the upper end of the severe disability spectrum, but few studies in the United States have addressed the education of students with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD). This qualitive, exploratory multiple case study focused on how teachers are providing appropriate and meaningful education to students with PIMD. Theoretical foundations were based on the work of Dewey and Vygotsky, who argued that appropriate education …

The usage of mobile network infrastructure to access internet resources for organizations is getting higher year by year in sub-Saharan Africa. However, there was an increase in malicious attacks on mobile networks and devices accessing mobile network infrastructure, targeting organizations’ private information. Grounded in Bandura’s social cognitive theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies security managers used to secure mobile network infrastructures from cyberattacks. Participants comprised four security managers in Kenya in two major cities who successfully implemented strategies to mitigate cyberattacks on the mobile network infrastructures. Data were gathered from video conference, face-to-face, semi-structured …
Predictors Of Depression Screening Among Cancer Patients In U.S. Ambulatory Settings, Joseph Oluyinka Fawole
Predictors Of Depression Screening Among Cancer Patients In U.S. Ambulatory Settings, Joseph Oluyinka Fawole
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression is a common mental health comorbidity in cancer diagnoses, affecting 8-24% of cancer patients. Despite the high prevalence of depression among cancer patients, it is often unrecognized and untreated, thereby representing an enormous psychological distress source among the cancer patient population. The purpose of this study was to explore and establish the factors that predict depression screening among cancer patients in the ambulatory care setting in the United States. The health belief model guided the study. Secondary data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey were analyzed to evaluate the predictors of depression screening in patients diagnosed with cancer. …
Social Influences On Citizens' Attitudes Toward The Police In A Public Assistance Role, Raymond Griego
Social Influences On Citizens' Attitudes Toward The Police In A Public Assistance Role, Raymond Griego
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Much research is based on the experience of participants in crime-related situations where they have contact with police. It is significant, however, that researchers have documented that 70 to 80% of calls requesting police service are not related to criminal activity. Despite this little is known about how police interaction with citizens in noncriminal and nonemergency situations impacts public perception of law enforcement. The aim of this phenomenological study was to explore the thoughts and perceptions of individuals who experienced a noncriminal police-citizen interaction as a result of receiving nonemergency assistance from the police. The conceptual framework for this study …
Analyzing Regional Impact Of Caregiving On Obesity Prevalence Among U.S. Adults, Myra Callis Johnston
Analyzing Regional Impact Of Caregiving On Obesity Prevalence Among U.S. Adults, Myra Callis Johnston
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Historically, sparse research efforts have focused on informal caregiving as a possible risk factor for developing chronic illnesses across the United States. Identifying additional subgroups at higher risk of becoming obese could provide insights into where public health practitioners, the health care community, and policy makers can direct limited resources through a more targeted approach. The theoretical foundation for the current project was the social cognitive theory. In this secondary correlational analysis using the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data set, the relationship between …
Differences In Students' First-Year Composition Grades Based On First-Year Composition Instructors' Employment Status, Karen Mariana Lynn
Differences In Students' First-Year Composition Grades Based On First-Year Composition Instructors' Employment Status, Karen Mariana Lynn
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this study was the trend of decrease in first-time-in-college (FTIC) degree-seeking student cohort fall-to-fall (FTF) retention rates at a community college located in a southern state. Reversing the trend of decrease in FTIC FTF retention rates requires determining factors that may have influenced the trend. Researchers have found instructor employment status and gateway course success may influence student achievement and therefore can affect student retention. At the research site, most FTIC students take first-year-composition (FYC), the gateway English course for most community colleges, from adjuncts. The purpose and research question of the study were to determine …
Relationship Between Social Media Screen Time, Sedentariness, And Bmi Among Young Adults, Helen Golod
Relationship Between Social Media Screen Time, Sedentariness, And Bmi Among Young Adults, Helen Golod
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity has quickly become an epidemic that affects adults and youth not only in the United States, but also increasingly elsewhere in the global community. Research suggests that most children and adolescents spend a significant amount of time indulging in screen-based leisure, especially on social media. Such behavior may also be linked to sedentary lifestyle, which can impact an individual’s body mass index (BMI). There is a lack of understanding concerning how sedentary behavior moderates the relationship between screen time spent on different types of social media and BMI among young adults in the United States. To address this research …

What Educators In Mexico And In The United States Need To Know And Acknowledge To Attend To The Educational Needs Of Transnational Students, Edmund T. Hamann, Víctor Zúñiga
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This chapter from the edited volume "The Students We Share" explains to both US and Mexican audiences that a persistent number and proportion of K-12 students continue to circulate between both countries and thus that it is a challenge for both countries' education systems—including teacher preparation, curriculum, assessment, etc.—to see how students' knowledge and experience from the other system is both salient to their new schooling in a new country and valuable for how it will contribute to their future means for negotiating adulthood.
The Impact Of Assertiveness And Religiosity On The Expression Of Dissent Among U.S. Immigrant Nigerian Workers, Peter Osiabia Azorji
The Impact Of Assertiveness And Religiosity On The Expression Of Dissent Among U.S. Immigrant Nigerian Workers, Peter Osiabia Azorji
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractScholars have studied dissent in general, but few have focused on the impact of cultural contexts and characteristics on dissent. Literature on the influence of cultural factors on expression of disagreement in organizations, by immigrant Nigerian workers in the US has not received adequate attention. There is therefore a compelling need to bridge this gap. This quantitative nonexperimental correlation study examined the impact of assertiveness and religiosity (variables that may be influenced by culture), on expression of minority dissent among Nigerian immigrant workers in the United States. The inquiry was based on two theoretical models: Bourhis et al.âs interactive acculturation …

Latina Female Superintendents Securing Positions In Small Rural School Districts, Irma Castillo, Velma D. Menchaca, Veronica Lopez-Estrada
Organization and School Leadership Faculty Publications
Underrepresentation of women in the position of school superintendent has been identified as an equity issue in the field of education. National demographics show that approximately 73% of school superintendents are male as compared to only 27% female. Of these female superintendents, Latina and nonwhite female superintendents make up a small percentage of this group (Kominiak, 2016) and scarce in the literature. This research study revealed that Latina superintendents were attracted to small rural districts with a familial environment with high levels of parental and community involvement. They shared the perspective that small rural communities seemed to be more receptive …

Psychology Faculty Research
Background
Although the link between body dissatisfaction and eating disorder (ED) pathology is well-established in general female samples, less is known about contextual body image (CBI) among female athletes. CBI refers to female athletes’ body image concerns in two contexts: sport and daily life. The Contextual Body Image Questionnaire for Athletes (CBIQA) measures four dimensions of body image (Appearance, Thin-Fat Self-Evaluation, Thin-Fat Others’ Evaluation, and Muscularity) in both contexts. In a sample of female collegiate athletes, this study sought to A) investigate the psychometric properties of the CBIQA, B) examine the cross-sectional relation of CBI with ED pathology and negative …

The webinar is a two-hour educational program that covers topics related to what sexual harassment is, risk assessment …
Decreasing 30-Day Readmission Rates In Patients With Heart Failure, Nancy Rizzuto
Decreasing 30-Day Readmission Rates In Patients With Heart Failure, Nancy Rizzuto
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Abstract: Heart Failure is one of the leading causes of hospital readmissions. Heart Failure affects approximately 6.2 million adults in the United States and costs the nation an estimated $30.7 billion each year (Farmarkis, 2017). Prevalence is projected to increase 25% by 2030 (Savarese, 2017). Approximately 50% of patients who are discharged are readmitted within 6 months and 24% within 30 days (Desai & Stevenson, 2012). About half the population with heart failure dies within 5 years of diagnosis (CDC, 2016). Despite advances in the treatment of heart failure, patient optimization remains a challenge for health care providers. The initiation …
Reducing Early Hospital Readmission Rates After Bariatric Surgery, Payal Sharma
Reducing Early Hospital Readmission Rates After Bariatric Surgery, Payal Sharma
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
The prevalence of 30-day readmission after bariatric surgery is 0.6% to 11.3%, with a single hospital readmission nearly tripling the average 180-day cost of the surgery. Given that nearly 50% of early readmissions are preventable, close postoperative follow-up may allow for early identification of high-risk patients and preventative interventions.
This 7-month quality improvement project augmented clinical follow up post-bariatric surgery by incorporating a 7-10 day post-discharge call by an RD following a routine 1-3 day post-discharge call by an APP. Impact on readmission rate was examined. 166 participants included men and women ≥18 years of age, status post primary bariatric …
Preventing Recurrent Falls In Elderly Home Bound Health Plan Members, Debra Sylvester
Preventing Recurrent Falls In Elderly Home Bound Health Plan Members, Debra Sylvester
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Falls have become a major public health concern. As the population ages, the prevalence of falls among older adults continues to increase, as does mortality and morbidity. Evidence-based assessment and intervention tools are widely available, though in practice, providers experience challenges utilizing them. Homebound older adults are at particular risk since they have mobility and transportation barriers that prevent access to community fall screening and primary care sites. This project focused on the provision of fall assessment, interventions, and coordination of fall-prevention services for community-dwelling, homebound older adults covered by a managed health plan. A standardized fall assessment and intervention …

There is growing interest in the application of nature-based solutions to adapt to climate change and promote resilience, yet barriers exist to their implementation. These include a perceived lack of evidence of their functioning in comparison to conventional solutions and an inability for existing design, policy, and assessment processes to capture the multiple benefits of these solutions. Positing this as a challenge of operationalizing and measuring resilience, we argue that the concept of resilience needs to be given concrete meaning in applied management contexts. Starting with shoreline vulnerability as a policy problem and natural and nature-based shoreline features as a …

Versatile methods to organize proteins in space are required to enable complex biomaterials, engineered biomolecular scaffolds, cell-free biology, and hybrid nanoscale systems. Here, we demonstrate how the tailored encapsulation of proteins in DNA-based voxels can be combined with programmable assembly that directs these voxels into biologically functional protein arrays with prescribed and ordered two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) organizations. We apply the presented concept to ferritin, an iron storage protein, and its iron-free analog, apoferritin, in order to form single-layers, double-layers, as well as several types of 3D protein lattices. Our study demonstrates that internal voxel design and intervoxel encoding …

The mechanisms regulating myelin repair in the adult central nervous system (CNS) are unclear. Here, we identify DNA hydroxymethylation, catalyzed by the Ten-Eleven- Translocation (TET) enzyme TET1, as necessary for myelin repair in young adults and defective in old mice. Constitutive and inducible oligodendrocyte lineage-specific ablation of Tet1 (but not of Tet2), recapitulate this age-related decline in repair of demyelinated lesions. DNA hydroxymethylation and transcriptomic analyses identify TET1-target in adult oligodendrocytes, as genes regulating neuro-glial communication, including the solute carrier (Slc) gene family. Among them, we show that the expression levels of the Na+/K+/Cl− transporter, SLC12A2, are …

We report the formation of nanobubbles on graphene with a radius of the order of 1 nm, using ultralow energy implantation of noble gas ions (He, Ne, Ar) into graphene grown on a Pt(111) surface. We show that the universal scaling of the aspect ratio, which has previously been established for larger bubbles, breaks down when the bubble radius approaches 1 nm, resulting in much larger aspect ratios. Moreover, we observe that the bubble stability and aspect ratio depend on the substrate onto which the graphene is grown (bubbles are stable for Pt but not for Cu) and trapped element. …

Ecosystems across the United States are changing in complex and unpredictable ways and analysis of these changes requires coordinated, long-term research. This paper is a product of a synthesis effort of the U.S. National Science Foundation funded Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) network addressing the LTER core research area of “populations and communities.” This analysis revealed that each LTER site had at least one compelling “story” about what their site would look like in 50–100 yr. As the stories were prepared, themes emerged, and the stories were group into papers along five themes: state change, connectivity, resilience, time lags, and cascading …

Originalism From The Soft Southern Strategy To The New Right: The Constitutional Politics Of Sam Ervin Jr, Logan E. Sawyer Iii
Scholarly Works
Although originalism’s emergence as an important theory of constitutional interpretation is usually attributed to efforts by the Reagan administration, the role the theory played in the South’s determined resistance to civil rights legislation in the 1960s actually helped create the Reagan coalition in the first place.
