Visit To The Indian Nations: The Diary Of John Hambly, Daniel J. J. Ross
Visit To The Indian Nations: The Diary Of John Hambly, Daniel J. J. Ross
Florida Historical Quarterly
The early years of the second Spanish period in East Florida constituted a time for transition from British to Spanish administration, and for the establishment of relations between the new Spanish regime and its Indian and Georgian neighbors. These adjustments were carried out under the administration of Governor Vicente Manuel de Zéspedes. His successor, Juan Nepomuceno de Quesada, sought to create an intelligence system so as to learn about events and conditions in the South and among the Indians.
The Struggle For Free Trade In East Florida And The Cédula Of 1793, Janice Borton Miller
The Struggle For Free Trade In East Florida And The Cédula Of 1793, Janice Borton Miller
Florida Historical Quarterly
One of Spain's most critical weaknesses in her effort to hold on to her empire in America in the eighteenth century was her incapacity to produce supplies necessary for her colonists. The Industrial Revolution provided England with goods in universal demand, but Spain had few industrial machines. Nevertheless, she was convinced that control of the trade of her empire brought in the highest profits for both home and colonial markets and provided the stimulus the colonial economies needed for their prosperity.
The United States Navy Comes To Pensacola, George F. Pearce
The United States Navy Comes To Pensacola, George F. Pearce
Florida Historical Quarterly
The presence the navy has been a factor in the history of Pensacola almost since the moment that Florida became an American possession in 1821. The action by Congress in 1825 of selecting Pensacola as the location for a navy yard put Secretary of the Navy Samuel L. Southard, and ultimately the commissioners whom he appointed to determine the site for that establishment, in an unenviable position. Acting under pressure from Congress, the secretary ordered the commissioners to Pensacola before a study by the government to ascertain the most suitable location for a navy yard on the Gulf of Mexico …

Migration And Mortality: Social Death, Dispossession, And Survival In The Americas, Miranda Cady Hallett, Joseph Nevins, Jamie Longazel, Amelia Frank-Vitale, Alicia Yvonne Estrada, Abby C. Wheatley
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
This panel presents research from the new edited volume Migration and Mortality (edited by Longazel and Hallett, Temple University Press, 2021). Death threatens migrants physically during perilous border crossings between Central and North America, but many also experience legal, social, and economic mortality. Rooted in histories of colonialism and conquest, exclusionary policies and practices deliberately take aim at racialized, dispossessed people in transit. Once in the new land, migrants endure a web of systems across every facet of their world—work, home, healthcare, culture, justice—that strips them of their personhood, denies them resources, and creates additional obstacles that deprive them of …
Charles Gibson And Indian Territory's Periodical Press, Tereza M. Szeghi
Charles Gibson And Indian Territory's Periodical Press, Tereza M. Szeghi
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
I argue that Charles Gibson (Creek writer and journalist) offers an important but woefully understudied voice of resistance to the changes imposed upon the tribes of Indian Territory around the turn of the 20th century (such as forced allotment of tribal lands, dissolution of tribal governments, and Oklahoma statehood). In his regular column, “Rifle Shots,” Gibson offered a dynamic space in which to process and comment upon these changes. More specifically, while Gibson was quite outspoken in his critiques of the ways in which U.S. policies threatened Creeks’ sovereignty, culture, and well-being, his column also frequently contained reworkings of traditional …
A Structured Literacy Approach To Support Striving Readers In Secondary Grades: Meaningful Transactions Through Morphological Awareness And Fluency Building, Samantha Bart-Addison, Robert A. Griffin
A Structured Literacy Approach To Support Striving Readers In Secondary Grades: Meaningful Transactions Through Morphological Awareness And Fluency Building, Samantha Bart-Addison, Robert A. Griffin
Georgia Journal of Literacy
A high school English teacher and a university literacy professor provide secondary teachers with structured literacy strategies to support striving readers in the middle and high school grades. The authors present strategies that can be utilized with diverse texts across learning contexts. As a structured literacy approach, morphological awareness and prosodic fluency are emphasized to foster deeper, more meaningful transactions between students and texts. An example of a full structured literacy lesson is also provided that includes multiple strategies and is based on a gradual release model with guided and independent reading cycles. Applicable strategies for delivery of these skills …

A Taste Of Their Home: Lunar New Year Was The Occasion, But Bridge Building Was The Mission For Chinese Students, Kardelen Koldas
Colby Magazine
Inside Roberts Dining Hall one night in February, the first to arrive were already filling up their plates with signature Chinese dishes: vegetable egg rolls with plum sauce, sweet rice dumplings with red bean paste, and Sichuan spicy boiled fish. White and red parasols hung above the food. Red lanterns and fu (福) signs livened up the walls for good fortune, luck, and happiness. Chinese flags proudly stretched from one column to another.

Paddling The Green River, Stephen Collins
Colby Magazine
If you’ve followed the career of outdoor writer Heather Hansman ’05, you’ll recognize her gasping for air after dumping her raft-load of customers into a Class V rapid on the Gauley River, avoiding avalanches in deep backcountry powder in the Rockies and Cascades, or dodging toxic algae and scary big koi swimming in an urban lake in Seattle.

“Quietly Incomplete”: Academic Historians, Digital Archival Collections, And Historical Research In The Web Era, Donald Force, Bradley Wiles
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Since the early 1990s, archives institutions largely have approached digital archival collections with an “if we build it, they will come” mentality. But the extent and motivations of use for traditional and emerging patron groups are constantly evolving, and the factors or conditions that characterize use vary wildly in the web environment. As part of a broader study investigating how academic historians utilize and interact with digital archival collections, this paper details the findings of a pilot project involving a citation analysis, survey, and semi-structured interviews with academic historians from a medium-sized Carnegie Research 1 university. This limited exploratory study …

Personal-Activity Approach As The Basis Of The Method Of Teaching Foreign Languages, Gulsanam Abdullaevna Nematova
Personal-Activity Approach As The Basis Of The Method Of Teaching Foreign Languages, Gulsanam Abdullaevna Nematova
Central Asian Journal of Education
The personal-activity approach as the basis of the methodology of teaching foreign languages can be carried out using various forms and methods, have different prolongation, intensity, orientation. The pluralism of current methodological concepts is due to practical necessity: improving language and speech skills is a complex and lengthy process. However, none of the known methods can claim to be the best in terms of course preparation, so the search for new ways of working continues.

Communicative Competence And Autoremote Operations, Paraskevi Papaleonida
Communicative Competence And Autoremote Operations, Paraskevi Papaleonida
International Maritime Lecturers' Association (IMLA) 2021 Joint Conference With IMEC32, ICERS15 and INSLC21
This paper juxtaposes the communicative needs of the future with the good old concept of communicative competence. Communicative competence, as an STCW requirement for seafarers, is a key notion for Maritime English teaching. New operational functions and concepts are introduced, or existing ones are adapted, for the needs of autonomous and remotely operated (autoremote) vessels. The paper investigates the language requirements within the autoremote operation framework to check if these are covered by the yardstick (STCW) and the standardization tool (SMCP) used in Maritime English. The “remote navigator” needs to reach a good level of “remote situational awareness” through automated …

Systematic Review Of Pathways To Care In The U.S. For Black Individuals With Early Psychosis, Oladunni Oluwoye, Beshaun Davis, Franchesca S. Kuhney, Deidre M. Anglin
Publications and Research
The pathway to receiving specialty care for first episode psychosis (FEP) among Black youth in the US has received little attention despite documented challenges that negatively impact engagement in care and clinical outcomes. We conducted a systematic review of US-based research, reporting findings related to the pathway experiences of Black individuals with FEP and their family members. A systematic search of PubMed, PsycInfo, and Embase/Medline was performed with no date restrictions up to April 2021. Included studies had samples with at least 75% Black individuals and/or their family members or explicitly examined racial differences. Of the 80 abstracts screened, 28 …
