Employee Well-Being As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Perceived High-Performance Work Systems And Employee Outcomes, Albi Alika Jun 2021

Employee Well-Being As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Perceived High-Performance Work Systems And Employee Outcomes, Albi Alika

Theses and Dissertations

This study builds upon the strategic human resource management literature to further understand the effect of high-performance work systems on employee outcomes. Despite the increasing interest in examining the relationship between high-performance work systems and employee attitudes and behaviors, the mechanisms of how these HR practices affect employees are not fully clear. As such, the current study sheds more light into this area of the HR literature by examining the mediating role of employee well-being between perceived high-performance work systems and three important worker outcomes: work effort, turnover intention, and counterproductive work behavior. The model is tested by using a …

Destabilizing Gender And Genre: Queering The Body In Libertarias And Land And Freedom, Kathryn Everly Jun 2021

Destabilizing Gender And Genre: Queering The Body In Libertarias And Land And Freedom, Kathryn Everly

Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

Libertarias (1996) and Land and Freedom (1995) explore the complex situation

of women militia during the Spanish Civil War. A queer reading of the female

body in these films highlights wartime female masculinity (Halberstam) and

female solidarity. In renegotiating worn expectations of sexuality and gender,

the films question and ultimately redefine the wartime docudrama genre. The

queering of gender and genre leads to alternative versions of history that upend

the very idea of historical accuracy. The female bodies in the films transgress

entrenched binary gender norms, thus creating a uniquely queer representation

of female solidarity in the docudrama genre.

Writing Gender In Early Modern Chinese Women's Tanci Fiction, Li Guo Jun 2021

Writing Gender In Early Modern Chinese Women's Tanci Fiction, Li Guo

Comparative Cultural Studies

Women’s tanci, or “plucking rhymes,” are chantefable narratives written by upper-class educated women from seventeenth-century to early twentieth-century China. Writing Gender in Early Modern Chinese Women’s Tanci Fiction offers a timely study on early modern Chinese women’s representations of gender, nation, and political activism in their tanci works before and after the Taiping Rebellion (1850 to 1864), as well as their depictions of warfare and social unrest.

Women tanci authors’ redefinition of female exemplarity within the Confucian orthodox discourses of virtue, talent, chastity, and political integrity could be bourgeoning expressions of female exceptionalism and could have foreshadowed protofeminist ideals …

Translating New Words: The Effect Of Neologism On Translation, Anas Kh. Jun 2021

Translating New Words: The Effect Of Neologism On Translation, Anas Kh.

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

Neologisms are the translator's biggest problem. New objects, ideas, emotional words, scientific terms, slang and dialects are continually created or coming into the mainstream of language. While transferring words, each language acquires 3000 new words, annually (Usevičs, 2012).

The problem of translating new words is one of the hardest tasks facing translators; one cannot find such words in ordinary dictionaries even the newest specialized ones only after a while.

This paper draws the attention of translators and learners to the increasing number of such new words. Thus, neologism in English causes the dilemma of finding an Arabic equivalent.

For this …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Background

Previous work in HEK-293 cells demonstrated the importance of amino acid-induced mTORC1 translocation to the lysosomal surface for stimulating mTORC1 kinase activity and protein synthesis. This study tested the conservation of this amino acid sensing mechanism in human skeletal muscle by treating subjects with chloroquine—a lysosomotropic agent that induces in vitro and in vivo lysosome dysfunction.

Methods

mTORC1 signaling and muscle protein synthesis (MPS) were determined in vivo in a randomized controlled trial of 14 subjects (10 M, 4 F; 26 ± 4 year) that ingested 10 g of essential amino acids (EAA) after receiving 750 mg of chloroquine …

Health Care Disparities Around The Globe, Brianna N. Hodak, Renee Nicholson Jun 2021

Health Care Disparities Around The Globe, Brianna N. Hodak, Renee Nicholson

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

In Honduras, there are only 0.8 physicians for every 1,000 citizens, creating a nearly insurmountable barrier on the ability to access health care for the impoverished lower and middle classes. Various health care models that a country adopts directly affects the quality of life of its citizens, including access to care and clean water, advocacy of preventative methods, and life expectancy. By analyzing models, such as the “Out-of-Pocket”, Beveridge, and Bismarck models, one can see that there are positive and negative aspects in every system. It can also be seen that the American Healthcare system is also in dire need …

Reading Your Face: Do I Know Enough To Interpret How You Feel?, Youlim Kim Jun 2021

Reading Your Face: Do I Know Enough To Interpret How You Feel?, Youlim Kim

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined how individuals’ self-construal impacted their recognition accuracy and confidence in interpretation. Previous findings suggest that individuals with independent self-construal perceive the individual as a causal agent of emotion; however, individuals with interdependent self-construal believe that emotional expression is used to communicate with others. Hence, interdependent people perceive the situation as a causal agent of emotion expression. The present study assessed if self-construal influences people’s needs for contextual information when making emotional judgments. Participants (N = 242) were randomly assigned to either an independence-primed or interdependence-primed condition. Within the priming condition, participants additionally looked at 4 pictures …

Backward Glances: The Cultural And Industrial Uses Of Nostalgia In 2010s Hollywood Cinema, Matthew Cooper Jun 2021

Backward Glances: The Cultural And Industrial Uses Of Nostalgia In 2010s Hollywood Cinema, Matthew Cooper

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

Over the course of the 2010s, one identifiable trend in Hollywood cinema was the significant presence of nostalgia films. These films stage idealized recollections of the past, appealing to affective longing for its perceived comforts and stability. This thesis utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to present a historical narrative of recent Hollywood cinema and its intersection with broader American culture and society. I argue that the most recent cinematic “nostalgia wave” is attributable to the broad, epochal conditions of modernity and late modernity, specific historical events and trends of the 2010s, and Hollywood-specific technological and industrial discontinuities. In an attempt to …

A Systematic Literature Review Of Sexual Harassment Studies With Text Mining, Amir Karami, Melek Yildiz Spinel, Nicole White, Kayla Ford, Suzanne Swan

Faculty Publications

Sexual harassment has been the topic of thousands of research articles in the 20th and 21st centuries. Several review papers have been developed to synthesize the literature about sexual harassment. While traditional literature review studies provide valuable insights, these studies have some limitations including analyzing a limited number of papers, being time-consuming and labor-intensive, focusing on a few topics, and lacking temporal trend analysis. To address these limitations, this paper employs both computational and qualitative approaches to identify major research topics, explore temporal trends of sexual harassment topics over the past few decades, and point to future possible directions in …

Brahma, Sukhdev Singh Jun 2021

Brahma, Sukhdev Singh

Journal of International Women's Studies

The poem ‘Brahma’, not Brahmā who is a god entrusted with the charge of creation, refers to creative element in general. A mahāvākya, or the great saying, “Aham Brahmāsmi!”, or I am Brahma, or the creative element, from the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad, a Hindu scripture, deems, especially, the male human as the creator. The practical creative element with which males have been endowed is recognized as vīrya, or semen, throughout the Indian tradition. Since males are placed on par with the creator, who has been recognized above as god Brahmā, due to semen, the semen becomes an asset whose wasteful expenditure …

Moving Beyond Controversy: A Cross-Cultural Genre And Gender Study Of Rigoberta’S Testimonio I, Rigoberta Menchú And Malala’S Memoir I Am Malala, Asmaa Mansour

Journal of International Women's Studies

The two women Nobel Prize winners Rigoberta Menchú and Malala Yousafzai and their “bestselling” books have stirred numerous controversies over the past few years. The credibility of both writers is questioned and their books have not achieved much fame in their own countries (Guatemala and Pakistan, respectively) compared to Western countries. Rigoberta is blamed for representing “all” indigenous people, and Malala is accused of misrepresenting Islam and enhancing the West’s stereotypical assumptions about Muslim women as oppressed. While Rigoberta is accused of attacking the Guatemalan government, Malala is accused of inviting the “Western saviors” to come to post-9/11 Pakistan and …

Reframing Gender Complementarity: Dance And Women’S Empowerment In Post-Genocide Rwanda, Carine Plancke Jun 2021

Reframing Gender Complementarity: Dance And Women’S Empowerment In Post-Genocide Rwanda, Carine Plancke

Journal of International Women's Studies

Post-genocide politics in Rwanda aim to construct a new, modern and developed nation. Gender equality is one of the issues highlighted to this end. However, in order to defend current reforms, politicians and feminist lobbyists generally refer to women’s traditional position as wives and mothers, embedded in the sacred value attributed to fertility. This article explores Rwandan dance to examine the evolution of views on feminine specificity and gender complementarity within the socio-political context of the promotion of gender equality. Through examining a government-supported youth troupe, founded by Tutsi returnee students, and contrasting it with a female drum troupe, which …

After escaping the assassination of the Umayyad royal family in Damascus, a member of this family, Abd al-Rahman I, fled to the Iberian Peninsula to establish a new Umayyad Empire (756-1492 AD). Famous for its pluralistic polity, unparalleled scholarship, artistic prowess, and more, this empire rightfully established itself as a powerful political force. Many scholars emphasize the unique convivencia, or coexistence, that characterized Islamic Spain during these centuries while others thoroughly question this reality, concerned that it ignores the cultural strain that is inevitable in such a diverse society. In this essay, we find ourselves balancing a middle position, recognizing …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and their antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes can spread by hitchhiking in human guts. International travel can exacerbate this public health threat when travelers acquire AMR genes endemic to their destinations and bring them back to their home countries. Prior studies have demonstrated travel-related acquisition of specific opportunistic pathogens and AMR genes, but the extent and magnitude of travel's effects on the gut resistome remain largely unknown.

METHODS: Using whole metagenomic shotgun sequencing, functional metagenomics, and Dirichlet multinomial mixture models, we investigated the abundance, diversity, function, resistome architecture, and context of AMR genes in the fecal microbiomes of …

Social And Cultural Issues: The Digital Divide In The Gobi Desert: Spatiality, The National Identity Collapse, And A Language Gap, Undrahbuyan Basaanjav

Online Journal of Space Communication

No research has been conducted to examine how people in the countryside of Mongolia use the Internet and what social and cultural influences the Internet bring to these people. This study focuses on the geographical and cultural aspects of the digital divide in the Gobi desert of Mongolia. In this paper, I argue that the Internet brings a sense of mobility to people in remote Mongolia, which lets them move through social spaces. In the Gobi Desert the Internet has begun to break the geo-spatial notion of local vs. global. People in the Gobi Desert already use instant and mobile …

Who Do You See?: Representing Diverse Communities Through Inclusive Children’S Book Collections, Alicia G. Vaandering, James Rosenzweig

Public Services Faculty Presentations

In the early 1990s, Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop described books as windows that act either as sliding glass doors allowing readers to step into new worlds or as mirrors reflecting readers’ own perspectives and experiences. This presentation highlights the importance of offering both types of books to young readers and shares tools and resources that librarians can use to build more diverse collections capable of meeting the needs of the community. Determining how representative a collection is can be a daunting, time-intensive, and challenging task. This presentation endeavors to make that task more manageable by sharing the presenters’ experiences in …

"Erase Me": Gary Numan's 1978-80 Recordings, John Bruni Jun 2021

"Erase Me": Gary Numan's 1978-80 Recordings, John Bruni

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

This article considers the music of Gary Numan as a test case for questioning the traditional idea of individual artistic genius. Although Numan was diagnosed as autistic later in life, he claims that he exhibited signs of autistic behavior at the age of 14, which suggests that his music can reflect a different way of perceiving the world that is characteristic of autistic people. While arguing against the notion that autism distinctly influences art, the article considers the limitations of evaluating Numan’s work in the context of a humanist aesthetic that posits universal assumptions, based on an individual self, about …

Considering The State And Status Of Internationalization In Western Higher Education, Brian Culp Jun 2021

Considering The State And Status Of Internationalization In Western Higher Education, Brian Culp

Faculty Articles

While internationalization is among the top strategic priorities of universities and colleges globally, research into the expanse of internationalization in the kinesiology discipline is not well researched. Given this gap, critical consideration of the state and status of the phenomenon is needed. Knowing more about what is being done in the name of internationalization within kinesiology and reflecting on how those actions and outcomes are aligned, or not, with key theoretical guidance is necessary in order to plan for improvement accordingly. For these reasons, this paper first provides a primer on internationalization in higher education, including how the phenomenon has …

Black Girl Magic: The (Re)Imagining Of Hermione Granger: An Analysis And Autoethnography, Kandice Rose

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Hermione Granger was introduced to the world in the 1990s, with J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone. Described only as having "brown eyes, frizzy hair, and very clever", with no reference to her race or skin tone, it was long assumed and accepted that Hermione Granger was White. However, with the emergence of a Black Hermione Granger within fanfiction, fanart, and other fanwork, as well as the casting Afro-British actress Noma Dumezweni in the stage play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" other iterations of the character have come to the forefront. In a survey and various virtual …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Translanguaging By Colombian Migrants In North Carolina, Scott Lamanna Jun 2021

A Qualitative Analysis Of Translanguaging By Colombian Migrants In North Carolina, Scott Lamanna

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

This study examines the usefulness of the theoretical construct of translanguaging in analyzing the linguistic production of twenty-four Colombians (originally from Bogotá) residing in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. Translanguaging maintains that bilinguals and multilinguals have a single linguistic repertoire consisting of features traditionally associated with different named languages (English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, etc.), and that they freely select from among these features according to their communicative needs in specific contexts. In terms of named languages, participants utilized varying amounts of English during sociolinguistic interviews conducted primarily in Spanish by the investigator. The study presents a qualitative analysis …

Blue Loops, Rebecca Senn Jun 2021

Blue Loops, Rebecca Senn

Masters Theses

I started threading wires between objects in an attempt at connecting the fragments of my life, winding forms into spiraling webs of meaning. Bluebirds, cartoon toys, Jewish kitsch, 90’s teen angst, immaterial feeling. Wires are squeezed with plaster and smothered in paint, tightly wound, mummified, squeezed to death, or post-death, suspended in an oxygenless void, as if time stopped and all at once we could feel the simultaneity of things — the star hurtling through space, a swimmer falling into water, raindrops sliding off a pair of glasses. I spin wires, squeeze them with wet plaster, mummify them, until they …
