Media Competency And Media Literacy Education (Mle) Among Tribal Religious/Seminarians (Trs), Justin Tirkey
Media Competency And Media Literacy Education (Mle) Among Tribal Religious/Seminarians (Trs), Justin Tirkey
Dissertations (1934 -)
The media and technological advances have enormously transformed our lives, including the lives and training of Tribal religious/seminarians in India. The emerging media landscape in the 21st century has also expanded the notion of literacy from reading and writing to being competent in accessing media, becoming creative and critical consumers, and judicious participants in media as responsible and compassionate citizens. This requires inclusion of MLE curriculum for the TRS in their early stage of religious formation. The current quantitative study explored the media competency (media habits, attitude, purpose, and participation) the relationship, and difference among TRS. For this purpose, survey …

Given the current unprecedented multiple pandemics of COVID-19, anti-Black and anti-Asian violence, and white supremacy, we—a group of graduate students and a faculty member who hold diverse identities across disciplines, race, gender, nationality, and additional categories—came together to focus on qualitative research as an ontological, epistemological, and axiological space toward community and culture change. Specifically, we took up scholarly personal narrative, which centers postmodernism and focuses on the reality that “we see what we believe; we observe what we narrate; we transform what we reframe. ”What emerged were radical interrelated understandings of privilege, guilt, and the importance of kinship. As …
The Bmslss: Measurement Invariance And Latent Mean Differences Across Black And White Early Adolescents, Kimberly Gibson Sitter
The Bmslss: Measurement Invariance And Latent Mean Differences Across Black And White Early Adolescents, Kimberly Gibson Sitter
Theses and Dissertations
The Brief Measure of Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale (BMSLSS; Seligson, Huebner, & Valois, 2003) is a widely used brief self-report measure of child and adolescent Life Satisfaction (LS). Although acceptable reliability and validity have been demonstrated for the BMSLSS across various youth samples, few cross-cultural comparisons have been performed. Specifically, no studies to date have examined measurement invariance of the BMSLSS across diverse samples of racial groups in the US. The current study explored measurement invariance across Black and White middle school students (N = 1484) from four schools in a southeastern U.S. state through use of multi-group confirmatory factor …
Postcolonial Narrative And The Dialogic ImaginatioN: An Analysis Of Early Francophone West African Fiction And Cinema, Seydina Mouhamed Diouf
Postcolonial Narrative And The Dialogic ImaginatioN: An Analysis Of Early Francophone West African Fiction And Cinema, Seydina Mouhamed Diouf
Theses and Dissertations
Francophone West Africa, in the aftermath of colonization, found itself at a crossroads between the necessity to address the problems of neo-colonialism while affirming its cultural identity and the need to embrace a universal message. That dilemma is not shared by literary critics who regard the work of early generation writers merely as an “empire writing back.” In the many classifications of West African literature, the emphasis is oftentimes put either on the importance of a counter-discourse that also rejects Western aesthetics or on the effects of post-independence disillusionment. This study argues that early francophone West African literary productions took …

Developing A Science Curriculum With The Focus On Belonging, Megan Custer
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Custer, M. (2021). Developing a Science Curriculum with the Focus on Belonging The development of the year-long curriculum in this project is centered around the need for students to feel a true sense of belonging within their school and classroom. The project was developed using the learnings and literature of Gloria Ladson-Billings, Carol Goodenow, Nira Yuval-Davis, and many others who speak to the needs of students in having space and time for self-discovery within learning, and also feeling like an integral part of their own learning within the classroom. The specification to science curriculum within this project comes from the …
How Can Music Most Effectively Be Used In The English Learner Classroom, Robert Ryden
How Can Music Most Effectively Be Used In The English Learner Classroom, Robert Ryden
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Music is an omnipresent part of everyday life. Whether it’s in the background or the foreground, music is everywhere. This capstone project aims to deliver the best answer to the question: How can music most effectively be used in the EL classroom? Effectively using music in the EL classroom involves understanding how to thoughtfully select the right music for the right situation, how to use music to build community and social skills among students, and how music can be used to positively impact the language learning process. Through this project, educators are also given the opportunity to participate in a …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Tearful crying is a ubiquitous and likely uniquely human phenomenon. Scholars have argued that emotional tears serve an attachment function: Tears are thought to act as a social glue by evoking social support intentions. Initial experimental studies supported this proposition across several methodologies, but these were conducted almost exclusively on participants from North America and Europe, resulting in limited generalizability. This project examined the tears-social support intentions effect and possible mediating and moderating variables in a fully pre-registered study across 7007 participants (24,886 ratings) and 41 countries spanning all populated continents. Participants were presented with four pictures out of 100 …
I’M More Than A Farmer’S Wife, Stevie Munz
I’M More Than A Farmer’S Wife, Stevie Munz
The Qualitative Report
Women have always contributed to family farming operations; however, their labor was largely positioned as “women’s work” and ignored as contributing to the economics of the farming enterprise. Through examining the stories of farmers’ wives, this essay examined how the gender division of work and the ideology of domesticity silenced women’s contributions to family farming operations. Through oral history interviews and thematic analysis, this research project presents stories from two farmers’ wives (Annie and Belle) from western Illinois. The resultant analysis reveals that Annie and Belle labored on their family farming operations for most of their lives.
Live The Local: Exploring The Relationship Between Local News Media And Cities Undergoing Downtown Revitalization, Allison Wise
Live The Local: Exploring The Relationship Between Local News Media And Cities Undergoing Downtown Revitalization, Allison Wise
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The rise in suburban development has caused many downtowns across the United States to lose residents, businesses, attractions and community engagement. City officials and planners work to create policies, designs and urban development that help to revitalize downtowns. However, how do we bring people into our downtowns to live, work and play? That is where local news coverage can have an impact. The question arises: What can city officials, event organizers, business leaders do to foster a vibrant downtown? News outlets (e.g., television, print, digital) and their corresponding social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, can act as " …

Antecedents Of Members’ Trust Propensity And Its Impact On Self- Disclosure Intention In Mobile-Based Online Dating Apps, Bao Q. Duong, Jaeung Lee, Emmanuel Wusuhon Yanibo Ayaburi, Sung Simon Jin
Information Systems Faculty Publications
To examine users’ intention to disclose detailed information on Mobile-Based Online Dating Apps (MBODAs), we adapted Privacy Calculus Theory (PCT) to develop our research model. We posited perceived members’ trust propensity as a central factor connecting its antecedents with users’ information self-disclosure intention. We examine a) the impact of users’ perceived benefit, perceived risk, electronic word of mouth (eWOM), and prior experience on members’ perceived trust propensity, and b) the impact of perceived members’ trust propensity toward users’ information self-disclosure intention. Analysis of MBODA users’ responses indicates that perceived benefit has a positive effect on perceived members’ trust propensity, while …
Food And The Irish Short Story Imagination, Anke Klitzing
Food And The Irish Short Story Imagination, Anke Klitzing
Articles
Short fiction is a format heartily embraced by the Irish literary imagination since the nineteenth century. This paper takes a gastrocritical approach to investigate the role of food in selected stories from the recently published anthology The Art of the Glimpse (2020). It shows that through the years, food and foodways have been valuable tools for Irish writers, providing setting and context, themes and symbols, plot points, conflicts, characterisation, as well as the quintessential epiphanies.

A Comparative Thematic Analysis Of Newspaper Articles In France After The Bataclan And In The United States Of America After Pulse, Simon Rousset
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This project interrogates unequal power relations that underlie newspaper representation of terrorism and reinforced Orientalism discourse following the 13 November 2015 mass murders in Saint-Denis and Paris, France, and following the 12 June 2016 mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, United States of America (U.S.A.). It was not surprising to bear witness to the ways national media took hold of these major socio-political events. These events, and the stories that have been published about them, are interpreted through the prism of terrorism, moral panic, and Orientalism, in the sense that the media tend to transcribe the shock of the attacks as …

Alternative Approaches To Protect Sensory Inner Ear Tissue Against Cisplatin-Induced Ototoxicity, Nicole K. Febles
Alternative Approaches To Protect Sensory Inner Ear Tissue Against Cisplatin-Induced Ototoxicity, Nicole K. Febles
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder often involving permanent damage and loss to the inner ear’s mechano-sensory hair cells and spiral ganglion neuron fibers. Significant causes of SNHL are ototoxic drugs, environmental factors, loud noises, and continuous wear with age. A successful but ototoxic chemotherapeutic known as Cisplatin often damages auditory hair cells via mitochondria dysfunction, DNA fragmentation, and cellular death through apoptosis. Despite the high prevalence of SNHL, there currently is no FDA-approved prevention or cure. Thus, auditory and cancer researchers have investigated various individual otoprotective agent preventions with limited success. This dissertation used a novel …
What Can Asian Eyelids Teach Us About User Experience Design? A Culturally Reflexive Framework For Ux/I Design, Jennifer Sano-Franchini
What Can Asian Eyelids Teach Us About User Experience Design? A Culturally Reflexive Framework For Ux/I Design, Jennifer Sano-Franchini
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
The proliferation of web applications in recent years has brought about conversations among technology designers about user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design’s role in propagating and reaffirming cultural bias, and in facilitating race-based discrimination. At times, such conversations have demonstrated how taking stock of racialized and cultural bias during the design process can challenge widely held design assumptions. For example, in 2015, Nextdoor, a neighborhood-based social network, was reported to have facilitated racial profiling when users began posting to the application’s Crime and Safety section reports of “suspicious” persons on the basis of racialized appearance, as opposed to …
Achieving Cultural Community Through Rhetorical Means: A Study Of Culture In The Bologna Process Documentation, Diane Martinez
Achieving Cultural Community Through Rhetorical Means: A Study Of Culture In The Bologna Process Documentation, Diane Martinez
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
An interesting point to consider when studying the Bologna Process, Europe’s contemporary initiative to reform the higher education systems among the 47 member countries, is how culture is represented in the official Process documentation. The official documentation contains layered definitions of culture that become problematic when determining the progress or the success or failure of this reform effort. For example, in the Sorbonne Joint Declaration (1998), the originating document of the Bologna Process, education ministers emphasized a large, overarching, definition of culture—a European culture—when they wrote that the Bologna Process is an opportunity “where national identities and common interests can …

Cultural Polysemy: Exploring Cultural Codes Through Digital And Non-Digital Practices, Anirban Ray
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
Culture is a coherent entity we use for describing our cooperative interests with others in political, social, and historical contexts. Culture is functional in that it is defined through individual and collective articulations in time and space. Its representations occur through macro categories of nations, race, habits, practices, and values as embodied in the following models: contexting (Hall, 1976); value orientation (Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck, 1961); cultural dimension (Hofstede, 1996); Seven-Dimensions of culture (Trompenaars & Hampden-Turner, 1997); Seven Value Types (Schwartz, 1999). Culture also gets defined in terms of its situatedness based on specificity of contexts and practices: social constructionist approach …
Operationalizing Culture With Design Cards In Cross-Cultural Design: Translating Critical Knowledge Into Provocative Insights, Huatong Sun
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
Operationalizing culture is “one of the most fundamental issues cross-cultural researchers face” (Matsumoto & Jones, 2009, p. 324), as stated in The Handbook of Social Research Ethics. Inconsiderate research design could “ignore the large degree of individual differences that exist in human behavior” (p. 325) and eventually “vindicate” cultural stereotypes the researchers mean to avoid.
In the field of cross-cultural design, a big challenge is how to inform and guide the design process with a sophisticated understanding of culture. This design challenge is a contextualized problem of operationalizing culture in practice. Insensitive design recommendations could end up strengthening the cultural …

Towards A Contingent Intercultural Methodology: The 2012 QuéBec Student Strikes And The Rhetorics Of Universality, Nathan Franklin
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
In the following article, I argue that speculative realism offers intercultural researchers heuristics to observe intercultural spaces without having to pay exclusive attention to the relationships present within those spaces. In other words, intercultural spaces can be considered independent of the researcher’s mind, because they are co-created by intercultural researchers (Cummings, 2014, p. 129). Following Gabriel (2014), perspectives on intercultural spaces are just as real as the spaces themselves. It is intellectually unproductive, however, to compile a list of all possible perspectives on an intercultural space to know what it truly is, which is what the local only approach to …
Female Characters In The Novel “Death Of A Hero” By Richard Aldington, Shakhnoza Chorieva
Female Characters In The Novel “Death Of A Hero” By Richard Aldington, Shakhnoza Chorieva
Philology Matters
The literary process in the first half of the twentieth century acquires new styles, new techniques, it combines modernism and realism. For literary works, fantastic absurdity becomes characteristic, as a new experimental form. If in the nineteenth century, literary works described clear objective subjects, for example, love, evil, family and social relations, then in the updated literature of the twentieth century, abstract psychological methods are used primarily to describe a particular thing. The First World War became the cardinal theme of the art in the first half of the twentieth century, determined the personal destinies and formed the artistic personality …
A Conceptual Framework Of Cultural Competence: A Case Study Of A Japanese Multinational In A Cross-National Context, Kanji Kitamura
A Conceptual Framework Of Cultural Competence: A Case Study Of A Japanese Multinational In A Cross-National Context, Kanji Kitamura
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article proposes a diagrammatic framework[1]to address the theoretical concept of cultural competence. Bridging prevalent concepts available in literature, it posits a simple yet versatile multi-level framework with two extremes to capture a spectrum of cultural specificities. Through a case study on a Japanese automobile conglomerate partly with European management, it concludes that cultural competence can be shown on a linear scale in the systematic framework. The findings advance the concept of cultural competence and the proposed model may be used as a foothold for future research possibly in any combination of cultures. This study is not to …
Psychometrics Of A Measure Of Sexual Assault Coping Self-Efficacy: A Comparison Of Across Age Groups, Thomas Pankau
Psychometrics Of A Measure Of Sexual Assault Coping Self-Efficacy: A Comparison Of Across Age Groups, Thomas Pankau
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
Sexual assault affects people of all ages and is associated with poorer psychosocial outcomes including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Coping self-efficacy (CSE) refers to how capable an individual feels they are able to handle stressors, including sexual assault, and it is a strong predictor of psychosocial outcomes. This dissertation assessed the psychometrics of the Sexual Assault Coping Self-Efficacy Measure (SACSEM), an instrument developed to measure sexual assault CSE across different age groups. Since the majority of research has focused on CSE following sexual assault in adults, I examined CSE across groups of adolescents, emerging adults, and adults (N = …

Metadiscourse In Book Reviews In English And Brazilian Portuguese: A Corpus-Based Analysis, Luciana Junqueiria, Viviana Cortes
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
Book reviews play different roles in academia. They are used in the selection of what books to read and purchase (Carvalho, 2001) and as a vehicle for publication and visibility, especially for graduate students and novice scholars (Hyland, 2000; Motta-Roth, 2001). Scholars and graduate students must do a great amount of reading in order to stay up to date in any given field, as scientific knowledge has become more and more widespread. This task is undeniably challenging given the amount of time and resources needed for such updating (Carvalho, 2002; Suárez & Moreno, 2008). Academics need to be selective about …
