Insidious Interlocking Of Gender And Caste: Consequences Of Challenging Endogamy, Mayurakshi Mitra
Insidious Interlocking Of Gender And Caste: Consequences Of Challenging Endogamy, Mayurakshi Mitra
Journal of International Women's Studies
The Caste system in the Indian subcontinent is characterized by hierarchy or gradations according to occupational status. The evaluative standard that places a caste higher than others or lower compared to the rest is rooted in the Hindu Dharmashashtras. The high and the low are opposed to each other because of their associations with notions of purity and impurity in terms of the nature of their occupations. Since each caste is regarded as a closed group, special emphasis is placed on eating, physical contact, and marriage. Out of these three, the institution of marriage plays a significant role in the …

Inflammation is a hallmark of aging and accelerated aging syndromes such as Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS). In this study, we present evidence of increased expression of the components of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway in HGPS skin fibroblasts, an outcome that was associated with morphological changes of the nuclei of the cells. Lymphoblasts from HGPS patients also showed increased basal levels of NLRP3 and caspase 1. Consistent with these results, the expression of caspase 1 and Nlrp3, but not of the other inflammasome receptors was higher in the heart and liver of Zmpste24
A Comprehensive Antiracist Framework For Slhs Education: A Sample Curriculum Related To Arab American Populations, Reem Khamis-Dakwar
A Comprehensive Antiracist Framework For Slhs Education: A Sample Curriculum Related To Arab American Populations, Reem Khamis-Dakwar
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students in higher education programs in Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences (SLHS) experience structural racism, entering a majority white profession, while confronting social inequalities in their personal and professional communities. A vision of an antiracist decolonized antiracist curriculum enhances the integration of BIPOC students in academic programs in the field, while also facilitating the preparation of non-BIPOC students to meet the needs of a growing and diverse community of individuals with communication disorders. Such a curriculum must be comprehensively designed to include pedagogy, community-based, and research based educational activities, and to adequately prepare …

The Power Of Faculty: Transformative Agents Of Change For The Profession, Lekeitha R. Morris, Monica L. Bellon-Harn
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
The lack of racial diversity in the profession is problematic for the families we aim to serve. The goal of this paper is to address some of the ways in which CSD departments can contribute to increasing the number of speech-language pathologists and audiologists of color. This manuscript proposes that faculty are a source of fundamental change and progress toward anti-racism in CSD profession. We will (a) describe strategies for creating equity within the course syllabi, content and classroom interactions (b) offer suggestions on next steps beyond the classroom and (c) highlight ways to maximize success through departmental initiatives.

Artistic Vision Of The World In The Rome Thinking Of Chingiz Aytmatov, Zulfiya Pardaeva
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
This article examines the artistic vision of the world in the romantic thinking of Chingiz Aytmatov. his novel triad "And the day lasts longer than a cent ury", "Slough", "The brand of Cassandra" is connected and imbued with one thought - "if humanity does not learn to live in peace, it will perish." It is in these philosophical conclusions that the artistic thinking of the writer-prophet is hidden, who prophesied to all people, to humanity: The laws of human relations do not lend themselves to mathematical calculations, and in this sense the Earth rotates like a carousel of bloody dramas …

Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
This article is about the effectiveness of using descriptive methods in English classes and professional-oriented teaching foreign language at a non-language university. It analyses the peculiarities of descriptive method, comparative-historical method and the role of linguodidactics in teaching foreign language at a non-linguistic university. The introduction of the concept of competence in the educational process eliminates the gap between the theoretical knowledge that has hitherto been used in teaching practice and its practical application, that is, when the student has theoretical knowledge, it is difficult to use it in problematic situations. So, Great attention is paid to the teaching of …

Lexical Interference As The Interaction Of Language Systems In A Bilingual Environment, Muborak Turayeva
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
The work considers the development of the theory of language contacts, in particular, provisions concerning interference as a cause of linguistic variation. The results obtained deepen the existing ideas about the peculiarities of the implementation of linguistic units of English origin and the conditions for their use in the Uzbek language, as well as create prerequisites for further study of the problems of the relationship of languages. In this work, we adhere to the position taken by U. Weinreich, understanding by interference any change in the language system under the influence of another language and, therefore, including lexical borrowings here. …

“Yellow Perils,” Revived: Exploring Racialized Asian/American Affect And Materiality Through Hate Discourse Over The Covid-19 Pandemic, Keisuke Kimura
Journal of Hate Studies
The goal of this essay is to explore what kind of hate is produced against Asian bodies in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic. By centering Asian/American affect and materiality – marginalized voices, narratives, and feelings of Asian/Americans as affective-performative texts, this essay attends to critique the historical continuum of racial discrimination against Asian/Americans (i.e., yellow peril) and advocate for social justice, equality, and inclusion in the U.S. Overall, I argue that Asian/American bodies are both physiologically and ideologically desensitized, dehumanized, and weaponized as the revival of yellow perils over the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, this essay highlights the possibility of adding …

Kung Flu And Roof Koreans: Asian/Americans As The Hated Other And Proxies Of Hating In The White Imaginary, Julia R. Decook, Mi Hyun Yoon
Journal of Hate Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic brought about not only political, social, and economic disaster globally, but also rising hate and the exacerbation of social inequity. As the pandemic spread beyond China, hate crimes against Asians skyrocketed in the United States and internationally. Amidst growing xenophobia and a global health crisis, 2020 also marked worldwide Black Lives Matter protests. Memes that featured “Roof Koreans” started being shared during the protests, along with the already racist memes about COVID-19 that targeted Asians. In this essay, we critically analyze memes from the spring and summer of 2020 to examine how Asian/Americans are not only positioned …

Wireless Transmissions: Early Russian Radio And Modernist Poetics, Ana Berdinskikh
Wireless Transmissions: Early Russian Radio And Modernist Poetics, Ana Berdinskikh
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation examines the first era of mass wireless communication in Russia, and the ways in which emerging media technologies shaped and intersected with cultural production in the early twentieth century. In this project, I study a series of authors and artists who participated in a growing technological discourse, as they wrote, debated and conceived of methods to achieve “direct” and “instantaneous” communication that exceeded the capabilities of written text. Through their poems, fiction, lithographs and collages, these artists explored the role that wireless telegraphy and radio played in shaping conceptions of spatial and temporal limitations, and how these devices …
