Health Services and Informatics Research

BACKGROUND: Sexting is an increasingly common phenomenon among adolescents and young adults. Some studies have investigated the role of personality traits in different sexting behaviors within mainstream personality taxonomies like Big Five and HEXACO. However, very few studies have investigated the role of maladaptive personality factors in sexting. Therefore, the present study investigated the relationship between Dark Triad Personality Traits and experimental (i.e., sharing own sexts), risky (i.e., sexting under substance use and with strangers), and aggravated sexting (i.e., non-consensual sexting and sexting under pressure) across 11 countries.

METHODS: An online survey was completed by 6093 participants (Mage = 20.35; …

The Masochian Woman: A Fantasy Of Male Desire?, Jennifer Komorowski Ms. Mar 2021

The Masochian Woman: A Fantasy Of Male Desire?, Jennifer Komorowski Ms.

Middle Voices

The Masochian woman is a figure who stages what is at stake for women when desire and the law come together. This requires an examination of the conflict that exists between the idea that women’s masochism is the fantasy of men and the truth about who wields power in the masochistic theatre. Thus, the inquiry into women’s masochism means following Jacques Lacan’s conception of women’s masochism in Anxiety, which describes it as holding a “completely different meaning, a fairly ironic meaning, and a completely different scope” from the pervert’s masochism or moral masochism (Lacan, 2016, p.190). Beginning with a critical …

Immortal Celebrities: Tourism In Hollywood Cemeteries, Marta Soligo

Far West Popular Culture Association Annual Conference

This research is a critical study of tourism at four cemeteries in the Los Angeles area between 2013 and 2019. We examined these venues through the lens of celebrity tourism, since they are known as “Hollywood memorial parks,” hosting the graves of some of the most famous stars in the world. Through a qualitative study, we aimed to understand how the relationship between these venues and the entertainment industry works as a “pull factor” for tourists. Firstly, we identified the motivations behind the increasing number of tourists who add Los Angeles cemeteries to their must-see list. Although scholars often define …

Ugandan Adolescents' Attitudes Toward, And Shared Activities With, Same And Other-Gender Peers And Friends, Flora Farago, J. Xu, Natalie D. Eggum-Wilkens, Linlin Zhang, Danming An, Eunjung Kim, Emily Adams

Faculty Publications

Ugandan adolescents (n = 202, 54% girls; Mage = 14.26) answered closed- and open-ended questions about the gender composition of friends and attitudes about, and activities with, same- and other-gender peers and friends. Adolescents’ friendships were somewhat gender segregated, although other-gender friendships were present. Positive attitudes about same- and other-gender peers and friends were prevalent. Girls and boys displayed similar attitudes about same- and other-gender peers, with the exception of boys reporting more positive attitudes toward boys. Adolescents enjoyed the following aspects of same- and other-gender friendships: talking about problems, receiving help, sharing items and activities, receiving advice …

Perceptions And Practices In Language Teaching: A Survey Of Experts In Literary And Cultural Studies, Justin P. White, Andrew J. Demil, Geraldine Blattner

Dimensions

This study serves as a follow-up to VanPatten’s (2015a) demographic report including the makeup of many university language departments. The present study investigates what some literary and cultural studies experts self-report regarding their training in SLA/language pedagogy, term familiarity, perceptions of Communicative Language Teaching, and classroom practices. Participants included 38 university-level US Spanish and French professors with expertise in literary and cultural studies. Findings revealed a lack of familiarity with some SLA and language teaching constructs, feedback types, and the role of explicit grammar and mechanical drills. As such, we discuss the ramifications of these findings.

This Way Or That? Par Ici Ou Par Là?”: Language In The Theme Park, Florian Freitag Mar 2021

This Way Or That? Par Ici Ou Par Là?”: Language In The Theme Park, Florian Freitag

Visions in Leisure and Business

Language and its multiple forms and functions in the theme park have only received scant attention in cultural and media studies-oriented theme park scholarship. In both written and oral form, however, language not only constitutes an integral part of the pluri- or multimedial mix that makes the theme park a hybrid, composite, or meta-medium, but also offers visitors a large variety of information on safety, park operations, and theming. Using examples from parks in both the U.S. and Europe and drawing on such theoretical concepts as paratextuality and "linguistic landscapes," this essay suggests a tripartite approach to studying the complex …

Thermoplastics can be used as a replacement or alternative for a variety of medical and commercial products. The addition of halloysite nanotubes further enhance the strength and functionality of the composite. The aim of this project was to evaluate the capability polylactic acid (PLA) to be enhance with halloysite nanotubes and other additives. We created a nanocomposite that offered similar stabilization to titanium surgical plates but with the added benefit of bone generation through recruitment and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. Varying amounts of PLA and polycaprolactone were combined with growth factor doped halloysite nanotubes or silicon nitrate then extruded …

Perceptions Of Health Insurers Towards Pay-For-Performance As A Cost Control Model For Hospital Services, Mandlenkosi Moyo Mar 2021

Perceptions Of Health Insurers Towards Pay-For-Performance As A Cost Control Model For Hospital Services, Mandlenkosi Moyo

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Hospital costs are the most significant portion of health-related costs incurred by non-profit health insurers registered as medical schemes in South Africa. Medical schemes continue to use retrospective reimbursement models for hospitals despite general acknowledgment that these models do not limit hospital costs and utilization. Although medical schemes are interested in implementing alternative reimbursement models, such as pay-for-performance (P4P), they are uncertain about which P4P models they can use to reduce hospital costs, resulting in their inability to make critical changes to their costs from traditional fee-for-service models. This qualitative exploratory multiple case study used 17 open-ended case interviews to …

A Mentoring Model: A Leadership Style For Seventh-Day Adventists In Southern Asia, J. L. Samir

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in India has been commissioned by God to be a witness to the 1.3 billion people in India of whom 80% are from a Hindu background. After a hundred years, the Southern Asian Division has a membership of 1.5 million people. There are many reasons to celebrate the success of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in India, particularly the success of the Adventist school system and the health care provided by the health institutions. However, the organization that is responsible for leading South Asians to Jesus Christ may not be able to celebrate the same success as …

Identifying And Explaining The Role Of The Teacher And The Child In The Guided Play Process: A Qualitative Content Analysis, Saber Abdolmalaki, Noushin Nouri, Faezeh Asadi

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

Effective implementation of guided play requires teachers who, with a proper understanding of their role and that of children, know how to begin and interact during the play. Such teachers, while paying attention to and supporting learning goals, also provide children with a process of enjoyable playing experience. The goal of the current study was to identify and explain the role of the teacher and the child in the guided play process of teaching-learning. The research method was inductive qualitative content analysis in which guided play research studies in the field of children’s education from 2000 to 2020 were identified …

Virtual Games Meet Physical Playground: Exploring And Measuring Motivations For Live Esports Event Attendance, Haozhou Pu Mar 2021

Virtual Games Meet Physical Playground: Exploring And Measuring Motivations For Live Esports Event Attendance, Haozhou Pu

Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

The spectacular rise of esports and its live events have drawn increasing interests from sport and leisure studies. Little information, however, is known on motives behind spectators’ attendance of esports events. Based on a mixed-method design consisting of data collected in cross-cultural settings, we developed and validated an eight-factor measurement scale related to the motives of attending live esports events. In this study, we contend that esports event creates a space where virtual and physical experience are mutually constituted. While motives found in traditional sports and event research are present in the current study, motives unique to esports events are …

Is Green The New Red? Marxism, Ecology, And Contemporary Architectural Theory, Curtis Swope Mar 2021

Is Green The New Red? Marxism, Ecology, And Contemporary Architectural Theory, Curtis Swope

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

This essay examines the role of Marxist concepts in recent architectural theories of ecology using two architecture firms, Estudio Teddy Cruz and Sauerbruch Hutton (SH), as case studies. In their writings, Cruz and SH mobilize the critique of capital, a dialectical materialist understanding of history, and the Frankfurt School’s critique of functionalist culture for the theorization of sustainable design. Their work has two vital ramifications for current sustainability discourses in two different fields which this essay seeks to bridge. For Marxist theorists concerned about ecology but averse to Western Marxism because of its supposed idealism, Cruz and SH show anew …

Engaging In “Dangerous Discussions”: Fostering Cultural Competence Through The Analysis Of Depictions Of College Life In Popular Films., Elena M. Venegas, Lakia M. Scott, Karon N. Lecompte, Mia Moody-Ramirez, Yongpen Zhu

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

This qualitative case study utilized critical media literacy to guide the analysis of the depiction of racially and ethnically diverse college students in contemporary popular films. Participants in this study were racially and ethnically diverse undergraduate students enrolled at a private, predominantly White institution in the United States. Three primary themes emerged from this study. First, students of color were more apt to recognize stereotypical portrayals of people of color in the films, whereas White students’ responses were more attuned with color-blind racial ideology (CBRI). Second, media-centered discussions provided an outlet for students of color to share their personal experiences …

Addressing Social Isolation And Loneliness In Older Adults: A Person-Centered Approach, Samantha K. Koyama Mar 2021

Addressing Social Isolation And Loneliness In Older Adults: A Person-Centered Approach, Samantha K. Koyama

Social Sciences

The older adult population in the US is drastically increasing, but the country is not adequately prepared to handle all of the growing needs that come with this demographic change. A large reason for this being the general population’s lack of understanding of the various experiences that older adults go through. This paper aims to provide a thorough review of existing literature on the subject of social isolation and loneliness, especially as it pertains to the older adult experience. I also highlight the role the COVID-19 pandemic has played in exacerbating such issues. I discuss the difference between social isolation …

Creative Placemaking In Singapore: A Critical Reflection, Su Fern Hoe Mar 2021

Creative Placemaking In Singapore: A Critical Reflection, Su Fern Hoe

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

All across the globe, there has been increasing recognition of the transformative power of creative placemaking to revive the economic and cultural life of cities. Singapore is no exception. Since 2008, the Singapore government has been engaged in a concerted effort to placemake Singapore into a culturally-vibrant cityscape with “heart and soul”. However, despite its increasing global popularity, what constitutes creative placemaking and its processes remain vague and tenuous. Notably, scant critical attention has also been paid on how Singapore has tried to adopt this global buzzword, and its impact on the localised dynamics of urban spaces and arts practices.

Evaluating The Impact Of Culture On Customer Satisfaction For Fms Projects, Yaquari A. Adams Ii Mar 2021

Evaluating The Impact Of Culture On Customer Satisfaction For Fms Projects, Yaquari A. Adams Ii

Theses and Dissertations

The cost, time, and quality pillars of the iron triangle in project management are often considered the most important factors for managers to consider when striving to achieve project success. However, recent literature suggests customer satisfaction and end-user benefit are the most important elements to prioritize during project development. This research analyzes the Air Force Security Assistance Center Construction Division and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) joint construction operations in relation to two Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) knowledge areas, project stakeholder management and project risk management. Project stakeholder management is addressed by identifying the relationship between cultural competency and …
