From Mythology To Pop Culture: Myth, Representation, And The Historiography Of The Amazon Warrior Woman In Ancient Art And Modern Media, James William Poorman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In today’s global society, the mediums in which cultural iconography are portrayed are mostly film, photography, and other mass media. 2500 years ago, in classical Athens, pottery and sculpture dominated the social scene. . Regardless of societies, religions, cultures, etc., certain human traits seem to follow us through time. On the other hand, some things do change, i.e.: the way civilizations view other groups through cultural lenses, view their own culture through perceived gender norms, and how civilizations and cultures try to correlate taboos into the exotic or barbaric. Wonder Woman is a recreation, or reinvention, of an ancient Athenian …

Effects Of News And Threat Perceptions On Americans’ Covid-19 Precautionary Behaviors, Riva Tukachinsky Forster, Megan A. Vendemia
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
Our study examines the relationship between news exposure at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, personal threat beliefs, beliefs about others’ threat perceptions, and participation in precautionary actions. A survey of 377 U.S . adults revealed a significant main effect of news exposure on various precautionary behaviors (e.g., facial mask wear, physical distancing). Personal threat beliefs and beliefs about others’ threat perceptions serve as unique mechanisms mediating the effect of news on specific CDC-recommended and less socially desirable actions. These findings can guide news sources covering health crises in a socially responsible manner.

Training For The Algorithmic Machine, Stefka Hristova
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
In thinking about the ubiquity of algorithmic surveillance and the ways our presence in front of a camera has become engaged with the algorithmic logics of testing and replicating, this project summons Walter Benjamin’s seminal piece The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility with its three versions, which was published in the United States under the editorial direction of Theodore Adorno. More specifically, it highlights two of the many ways in which the first and second versions of Benjamin’s influential essay on technology and culture resonate with questions of photography and art in the context of …

Investigations at the Native American site complex of Stark Farms in Mississippi, USA, have yielded numerous examples of metal artifacts of European origin. Our study suggests that they derive from contact between the AD 1540–1541 winter encampment of the Spanish Hernando de Soto expedition and the local Indigenous polity. The artifacts display a wide range of modifications, uses, and depositional contexts congruent with hybrid practices. We argue that the early colonial setting of Stark Farms requires a different perspective on cultural mixing than is often applied in studies of European colonialism. This is highlighted by the strongly improvisational nature of …
Food And Cultural Politics: A Culinary Lens Into Teaching American Art And Culture, Evie Terrono
Food And Cultural Politics: A Culinary Lens Into Teaching American Art And Culture, Evie Terrono
Art History Pedagogy & Practice
Seeking to challenge students to think deeply and critically about American art and material culture and their broad socio-cultural implications in the past and present, I developed in 2017 a course that explored the interpretation of foodstuff and American foodways in American art, prints and commercial advertising, and material culture. This article analyzes the pedagogical objectives of the course in its integration of a multi-modal learning approach that reinforced connections between learning, experiencing, and critical interpretation. Capitalizing on the emergence of scholarship in food studies in American art and through other cross-disciplinary readings students analyzed food symbolism, racial and economic …
The One – Way (Agri)Cultural Mirror: A Case Study Of How Young Agriculturalists Understand And Experience Culture, Janiece M. Pigg
The One – Way (Agri)Cultural Mirror: A Case Study Of How Young Agriculturalists Understand And Experience Culture, Janiece M. Pigg
LSU Master's Theses
As the global economy continues to transform how society operates, cultural competence has become a buzzword in education, professional development, research, government, and healthcare (Gay, 1994; Gallus et al., 2014). Cross et al. (1989) developed the most accepted definition of cultural competence: “a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals and enable that system, agency, or those professionals to work effectively in cross-cultural situations” (p. 13).
Despite this, little to no research has been devoted to understanding cultural competence in agriculture. Thus, a need emerged to describe the cultural competence …

Bullying victimization is associated with poor health-related outcomes, including sleeping problems. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of bullying victimization on sleep difficulty, and the moderating effect of the number of close friends on this association, also exploring differences across genders. The study was based on a nationally-representative survey on adolescent health conducted in Brazilian schools, involving a total of 109,104 participants, enrolled at the 9th year in 2012. The measures used in the analysis included socio-demographic characteristics, bullying victimization, sleep difficulty, and number of close friends. In the multilevel models, reporting more peer victimization was associated with …

Notes On The Circulation Of Epistemic Images, Nina Samuel
Notes On The Circulation Of Epistemic Images, Nina Samuel
Artl@s Bulletin
Three cases of image circulation in the sciences, two from complex dynamics and one from microscopy, are discussed. The article deals with failed circulations, suspected errors, interdisciplinary communication, notebooks of scientists, the role of media shifts, mathematics and materiality, human perception, pictorial norms and conventions. It analyses how images circulate through different thought collectives and visual cultures. All three examples show different strategies of how images that break with visual traditions have been reintegrated into epistemic circulations and become “boundary objects” that are both robust and flexible.

How To Build A World Art: The Strategic Universalism Of Colour Reproductions And The Unesco Prize (1953-1968), Chiara Vitali
Artl@s Bulletin
What role did UNESCO play in the art world of the post-war era? This article makes use of published and archival sources in order to clarify the utopia of a “World Art” that shaped UNESCO and led to the “Archives of Colour Reproductions of Works of Art”, a project of worldwide collect and diffusion of images of “masterworks” inspired by Malraux’s “Museum without walls”. This case study focuses on one particular aspect of the project, the “UNESCO Prize”, conceived by the Brazilian art critic and Marxist intellectual Mario Pedrosa for the 1953 São Paulo Biennial.

The Use Of Structuralism And Poststructuralism In Library And Information Science, Amjid Khan, Muhammad Arshad, Pervaiz Ahmad
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The paper aims to explore the fundamental concepts of structuralism and post-structuralism as philosophical approaches, literary differences between structuralism and post-structuralism, and the implication of these two approaches in Library and Information Science (LIS). Several published literature was consulted to achieve the study objectives. It was found that structuralism and post-structuralism have a significant impact on the functioning of modern libraries and, therefore, their importance should be given consideration. Structuralism and post-structuralism as philosophical approaches provide insights into research and development in LIS. The study gives numerous recommendations for LIS professionals to adopt these two philosophical approaches in modern library …

Epic Black: Poetics In Protest In The Time Of Black Lives Matter, David Marcello De León
Epic Black: Poetics In Protest In The Time Of Black Lives Matter, David Marcello De León
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation examines certain book-length poetic works released between 2014 to 2016, corresponding to the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement formed in the wake of the killing of Trayvon Martin in 2013. I argue that these works emerge from the same political and poetic urgency that demanded a movement like BLM. Using Beyoncé’s Lemonade (2016) as an entrance, I focus on a genre/strategy that Farah Jasmine Griffin calls Epic Black, a poetics that uses the hypervisibility of Black bodies, the inescapable place that Black expression has in popular American culture, and the scale and scope of the Western …
A Domain-General Perspective On Deviancy: People’S Sensitivity To Deviancy And Its Social Consequences, Anton Gollwitzer
A Domain-General Perspective On Deviancy: People’S Sensitivity To Deviancy And Its Social Consequences, Anton Gollwitzer
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
In this dissertation, I propose that people’s sensitivity to deviancy is a domain-general phenomenon—an aspect of the individual experience that manifests across distinct domains. Supporting this possibility, across a multi-faceted approach (cross-cultural, developmental, nonconscious processes), I document that people’s responses to deviancy—their evaluative and affective responses to distortions in regularities and patterns—overlap across highly divergent domains (e.g., nonsocial stimuli, social actions, physical characteristics, nonvisual stimuli, visual stimuli). Additionally, in line with this broad conceptualization of deviancy, I find that people’s domain-general responding towards deviancy is largely negative in affect, emerges at a young age, exists cross-culturally, and may even causally …

Red Lives: Grassroots Radicalism And Visionary Organizing In The American Century, Mary Rebecca Reynolds
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Red Lives is a side-by-side social and intellectual biography of Claudia Jones, Emma Tenayuca, and Ah Quon McElrath, three working-class women who came-of-age during the Great Depression, and whose lifelong commitments to grassroots organizing and radical politics emerged from the Popular Front’s cross-class, multiracial coalitions and collective actions. All three joined the Communist Party as teenagers and first organized for groups representing youth, the unemployed, or workers, often on campaigns for race and gender equity, civil liberties, and democratic rights, in New York, Texas, and Hawai’i. They produced and published theoretical work that elaborated the underpinnings of their organizing strategies, …

Healing Of Violence And Violence Of Healing: Mark’S Hybrid Jesus In Mark 5:1-20, Pierre Célestin Musoni S.J.
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether, in Mark 5:1-20, the author of Mark portrayed Jesus as an assimilated Jew or a transformative resistant. After preliminary matters concerning methodology, nature and scope, and significance, the theoretical framework is established (chapter 1). I discussed the origin of postcolonialism as a field of study, its relationship to biblical studies, and the postcolonial readings of Mark’s Gospel. Then, the thesis focuses on the Roman empire and its arrival in 1st century Palestine (Chapter 2). In this chapter, the roman imperial Weltbildung becomes the focus of the analysis. Subjugated people responded to …

Raising Cross-Cultural Awareness Among The Undergraduates Through Intentional Design In A Culture Course In The Us—An Exploratory Mixed-Methods Experimental Design, Hua Wang
Dissertations
The cultivation of intercultural competence is a growing trend globally, and integration of intercultural competence into coursework was widely acknowledged as a valid strategy to achieve this goal. The purpose of this study is to examine (1) the effects of the intervention of connecting one’s own culture to affect students' cross-cultural awareness development in American colleges; and (2) students’ perceptions of their own cultural‐awareness changes. Data was collected through pre-and post-questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. This study also compared between-group participants’ posttest ratings on a cross-cultural awareness scale, as well as pre- and post-test ratings within each group. The quantitative and …

Comparing And Contrasting The Socialization And Culturalization Of Monocultural And Multicultral Students, Safeen F. Ahmad
Honors Projects in Modern Languages
Thiis Honors Thesis aims to analyze and study college individuals who are raised in other countries and brought up with multicultural backgrounds (relating to several cultural or ethnic groups) and compare them to a sample of students who are considered to be mono-cultural (relating to one or few ethnic groups). From these two samples my research is aimed at investigating how these two samples are able to socialize and adapt themselves in a university setting and how their experiences and social circles vary in terms of diversity and cultural intelligence. This study uses data from a sample (n=71) of individuals …
A Study Of Undergraduate Major On The Youth Electorate Within The Bryant Community, Jenna Birnbohm-Kaminski
A Study Of Undergraduate Major On The Youth Electorate Within The Bryant Community, Jenna Birnbohm-Kaminski
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
This thesis will carefully explore the relationship between undergraduate college major, and political participation and affiliation of young voters (ages 18-29). There has been a great deal of research in the field of voter behavior about this generation of young voters, and how they will impact the new electorate and overall political climate. An increasing commonality amongst young people is an undergraduate education of some kind. However, undergraduate students can choose their area of study, thus differentiating the exposure to information and experience of each student at a very impressionable time in their lives. A study of the political behavior …

Where Do We Go When We Go Off-The-Grid?, Andrey Tolstoy
Where Do We Go When We Go Off-The-Grid?, Andrey Tolstoy
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation examines how the idea of going off-the-grid has affected the epistemology of documentary film, particularly three of its variants: romantic ethnography, observational cinema, and the essay film. The grid is understood to be a graphic design that is fundamental to modern cultural techniques, especially those involving the organization of objects and data, administration and governance. The grid as an organizational principle has been a definitive feature of modernity, particularly in so-called “disciplinary societies,” where its use intensified as a system of social control during industrialization and increasing urbanization. The expansion of the grid has resulted in a certain …
