A Patient-Facing Dashboard To Promote Shingrix™ Vaccination In A Continuing Care Retirement Community: A Quality Improvement Project, Emily S. Stewart Jan 2021

A Patient-Facing Dashboard To Promote Shingrix™ Vaccination In A Continuing Care Retirement Community: A Quality Improvement Project, Emily S. Stewart

DNP Scholarly Projects

BACKGROUND: Shingles is considered one of the most significant vaccine-preventable diseases of older adults based on its morbidity and public health burden, which increase drastically with age. Adult vaccine awareness and promotion programs are undervalued in the U.S.; in particular, educational programs targeting older adults are needed. Older adults have increasing rates of adoption of health information technology (HIT) to seek guidance and support for their medical needs. Leveraging HIT in the form of clinical dashboards is an option for providing reliable, safe and cost-effective vaccine education to older adults at high risk of vaccine-preventable disease.

METHODS: The specific aims …

Lost circulation and problems related to drilling present a major challenge for the drilling industry. Each year, billions are spent to treat these problems. There is not a single solution to lost circulation because of the complexity and kind of formations susceptible to this issue. Lost circulation treatment data for the Shuaiba formation (induced fractured formation) were gathered from drilled wells in Southern Iraq (over 2000). Treatments have been grouped according to the volume of mud loss as complete, severe, and partial loss remedies. Detailed costs and probabilities calculations were conducted. The costs of three types of loss treatments (partial, …

Will Carbon Dioxide Injection In Shale Reservoirs Produce From The Shale Matrix, Natural Fractures, Or Hydraulic Fractures?, Sherif Fakher, Youssef Elgahawy, Hesham Abdelaal, Abdulmohsin Imqam

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in shale reservoirs has been recently shown to increase oil recovery significantly from this unconventional oil and gas source. One of the most studied EOR methods in shale reservoirs is gas injection, with a focus on carbon Dioxide (CO2) mainly due to the ability to both enhance oil recovery and store the CO2 in the formation. Even though several shale plays have reported an increase in oil recovery using CO2 injection, in some cases this method failed severely. This research attempts to investigate the ability of the CO2 to mobilize crude …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Polymer rheology can have either a positive or a negative effect on polymer flooding performance under varied circumstances. Many researchers have studied the effect of polymer rheology in a vertical well, but no field scale studies have been conducted to investigate whether polymer rheology is beneficial to polymer flooding in heavy oil reservoirs developed by horizontal wells. In this paper, we conducted a numerical simulation study to examine the effect of HPAM polymer rheology on a polymer flooding pilot, which is the first-ever project conducted on a heavy oil reservoir from Alaska North Slope (ANS) developed by horizontal wells. Three …

Combined Oxidative Phosphorylation Deficiency 23 (COXPD23) caused by mutations in GTPBP3 gene is a rare mitochondrial disease, and this disorder identified from the Chinese population has not been described thus far. Here, we report a case series of three patients with COXPD23 caused by GTPBP3 mutations, from a severe to a mild phenotype. The main clinical features of these patients include lactic acidosis, myocardial damage, and neurologic symptoms. Whole genome sequencing and targeted panels of candidate human mitochondrial genome revealed that patient 1 was a compound heterozygote with novel mutations c.413C > T (p. A138V) and c.509_510del (p. E170Gfs∗42) in GTPBP3 …

Foucault’S Keystone: Confessions Of The Flesh, Bernard E. Harcourt Jan 2021

Foucault’S Keystone: Confessions Of The Flesh, Bernard E. Harcourt

Faculty Scholarship

The fourth and final volume of The History of Sexuality offers the keystone to Michel Foucault’s critique of Western neoliberal societies. Confessions of the Flesh provides the heretofore missing link that ties Foucault’s late writings on subjectivity to his earlier critique of power. Foucault identifies in Augustine’s treatment of marital sexual relations the moment of birth of the modern legal actor and of the legalization of social relations. With the appearance of the modern legal subject, Foucault’s critique of modern Western societies is complete: it is now possible to see how the later emergence of an all-knowing homo oeconomicus strips …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Facial appearance changes with the movements of bony segments in orthognathic surgery of patients with craniomaxillofacial (CMF) deformities. Conventional bio-mechanical methods, such as finite element modeling (FEM), for simulating such changes, are labor intensive and computationally expensive, preventing them from being used in clinical settings. To overcome these limitations, we propose a deep learning framework to predict post-operative facial changes. Specifically, FC-Net, a facial appearance change simulation network, is developed to predict the point displacement vectors associated with a facial point cloud. FC-Net learns the point displacements of a pre-operative facial point cloud from the bony movement vectors between pre-operative …

The Future Of Disclosure: Esg, Common Ownership, And Systematic Risk, John C. Coffee Jr. Jan 2021

The Future Of Disclosure: Esg, Common Ownership, And Systematic Risk, John C. Coffee Jr.

Faculty Scholarship

The U.S. securities markets have recently undergone (or are undergoing) three fundamental transitions: (1) institutionalization (with the result that institutional investors now dominate both trading and stock ownership); (2) extraordinary ownership concentration (with the consequence that the three largest U.S. institutional investors now hold 20% and vote 25% of the shares in S&P 500 companies); and (3) the introduction of ESG disclosures (which process has been driven in the U.S. by pressure from large institutional investors). In light of these transitions, how should disclosure policy change? Do institutions and retail investors have the same or different disclosure needs? Why are …

Distributional Arguments, In Reverse, Alex Raskolnikov Jan 2021

Distributional Arguments, In Reverse, Alex Raskolnikov

Faculty Scholarship

This Article contends that the government should consider – rather than ignore – distributional consequences both in the design of legal rules and during legal transitions. This does not mean that the distributional effect of every legal rule should be measured and taken into account in the rule’s design. But if the likely distributional effects are unintended, large, and objectionable, if the efficiency of the legal rule is doubtful, if the compensating tax-and-transfer adjustment is not forthcoming (or has not occurred), policymakers should take distribution into account. One way of doing so is to choose among several alternative legal rules …

Joint Co2 Mole Fraction And Flux Analysis Confirms Missing Processes In Casa Terrestrial Carbon Uptake Over North America, Sha Feng, Thomas Lauvaux, Christopher A. Williams, Kenneth J. Davis, Yu Zhou, Ian Baker, Zachary R. Barkley, Daniel Wesloh Jan 2021

Joint Co2 Mole Fraction And Flux Analysis Confirms Missing Processes In Casa Terrestrial Carbon Uptake Over North America, Sha Feng, Thomas Lauvaux, Christopher A. Williams, Kenneth J. Davis, Yu Zhou, Ian Baker, Zachary R. Barkley, Daniel Wesloh

Geography

Terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs) play a key role in the detection and attribution of carbon cycle processes at local to global scales and in projections of the coupled carbon-climate system. TBM evaluation commonly involves direct comparison to eddy-covariance flux measurements. We use atmospheric CO2 mole fraction ([CO2]) measured in situ from aircraft and tower, in addition to flux-measurements from summer 2016 to evaluate the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford-Approach (CASA) TBM. WRF-Chem is used to simulate [CO2] using biogenic CO2 fluxes from a CASA parameter-based ensemble and CarbonTracker version 2017 (CT2017) in addition to transport and CO2 boundary condition ensembles. The resulting “super ensemble” …

An Investigation Of Unsteady Thermal Exchange Processes In Geothermal Heat Exchangers, Ganesh Ravi Shanker Jan 2021

An Investigation Of Unsteady Thermal Exchange Processes In Geothermal Heat Exchangers, Ganesh Ravi Shanker

Doctoral Dissertations

“Geothermal heat exchangers, has become one of the highly recognized non conventional heat exchangers as they utilize renewable energy source earth to initiate the thermal energy transfer. However, these heat exchangers suffer from a expensive installation cost due to their conservative design model, thereby facilitating the need to identify and improve the design. In this dissertation, three gaps, which identifies improvement over conservative design were investigated, to assess the heat exchanger performance. In the first approach, borehole thermal and geometrical properties were investigated keeping the outlet leg of the heat exchanger as adiabatic, which neglects the thermal short-circuiting between the …

Modeling For Off-Chip High-Speed Designs, Siqi Bai Jan 2021

Modeling For Off-Chip High-Speed Designs, Siqi Bai

Doctoral Dissertations

”Signal integrity (SI) and power integrity (PI) are essential for datacenter application. A typical datacenter rack consists of a switch on the top of the rack, servers, and storage units. Three SI/PI related problems for datacenter application are analyzed in this research.

The first topic is analysis on power via induced Quasi-quarter-wavelength resonance to reduce crosstalk. Using an analytical model and 3D full-wave simulation models, a physical explanation for the unexpected resonance in the differential signal pairs is proposed. Considering the difficulty in changing the pin map of the IC-package, several PCB layouts to eliminate the power via induced quasi-quarter-wavelength …

Adaptive Dynamic Programming Methods For Tracking Current Control Of Switched Reluctance Motor Drive, Hamad Alharkan Jan 2021

Adaptive Dynamic Programming Methods For Tracking Current Control Of Switched Reluctance Motor Drive, Hamad Alharkan

Doctoral Dissertations

“This research investigates the application of adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) methods for the current control of switched reluctance motors (SRM). Since the traditional current controllers have large current ripples that increase torque ripples and acoustic noise, optimal tracking controllers using reinforcement learning (RL) approaches are introduced as an alternative adaptive technique for SRM drives. The proposed optimal tracking controllers can minimize current ripples and cope with uncertainties within the inductance profile of the SRM. The work is composed of three papers. In the first paper, a novel Q-learning scheduling method for the current controller of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) …

Political Systems And Revolution: The Cases Of Egypt And Tunisia, Ibrahim S.I Rabaia Jan 2021

Political Systems And Revolution: The Cases Of Egypt And Tunisia, Ibrahim S.I Rabaia

Student Works (2020-2029)

Revolution in MENA is a long-term process needing a long time to correct the structural failures of the existing political systems. In other words, revolutions were created to change the status quo, pave the way to a breakthrough in the political system, and open the political sphere by introducing a more inclusive and dynamic process for entering these systems. The mismatch between inputs and outcomes in the Egyptian and Tunisian political systems produced failures in dealing with the political, economic, and social demands of the revolutionary powers in both countries. Such a failure increased the chances of success for the …

Faculty Journal Articles

In this paper, I outline the colonial structure of international law, and examine the short decline or suppression of its coloniality in the so-called ‘era of decolonisation’, then illustrate its resurgence in the modern neo-colonial order. PIL has split into two separate systems. One includes, and is justified by, the heroic tales of human rights and ‘Humanity’s Law’. The other is the actualised system of International Economic Law (IEL), an order driven by the need of the over-developed states to plunder the under-developed states’ resources and labour, to subsidise the luxury to which we have grown accustomed. One purports to …

Frequency-Selective Metasurface Integrated Uncooled Microbolometers, Mahmoud Almasri, Edward C. Kinzel Jan 2021

Frequency-Selective Metasurface Integrated Uncooled Microbolometers, Mahmoud Almasri, Edward C. Kinzel

Patents

A metasurface integrated microbolometer having a sensing layer (e.g., SixGeyOI-x-y ). The presence of the metasurface provides selectivity with respect to wavelength, polarization and angle-of-incidence. The presence of the metasurface into the microbolometer affects conversion of electromagnetic to thermal energy, thermal response, electrical integration of the micro bolometer, and the tradeoff between resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistance, thereby allowing the ability to obtain a sensing with high temperature coefficient of resistance with lower resistivity values than that of films without the metasurface. The presence of the metasurface removes the need for a Fabry-Perot cavity.

The Democracy Principle In State Constitutions, Jessica Bulman-Pozen, Miriam Seifter Jan 2021

The Democracy Principle In State Constitutions, Jessica Bulman-Pozen, Miriam Seifter

Faculty Scholarship

In recent years, antidemocratic behavior has rippled across the nation. Lame-duck state legislatures have stripped popularly elected governors of their powers; extreme partisan gerrymanders have warped representative institutions; state officials have nullified popularly adopted initiatives. The federal constitution offers few resources to address these problems, and ballot-box solutions cannot work when antidemocratic actions undermine elections themselves. Commentators increasingly decry the rule of the many by the few.

This Article argues that a vital response has been neglected. State constitutions embody a deep commitment to democracy. Unlike the federal constitution, they were drafted – and have been repeatedly rewritten and amended …

Communities develop social languages in which utterances take on culturally specific situated meanings. As physics students interact in their classroom, they can learn the broader physics community’s social language by co-constructing meanings with their instructors. We provide an exposition of a systematic and productive use of idiosyncratic, socially acquired language in two classroom communities that we consider to be subcultures of the broader community of physicists. We perform a discourse analysis on twelve quantum mechanics students, two instructors, and the course text related to statements about basis and change of basis within a spin-½ probability problem. We classify the utterances’ …
