Some research (e.g., Dobao, 2012; Shehadeh, 2011; Wigglesworth & Storch, 2009; Storch, 2005) suggests that collaborative L2 writing results in higher quality L2 writing production than individual writing. Similarly, collaborative L2 writing has also been found to bring about more L2 learning opportunities for learners (e.g., Dobao & Blum, 2013; Dobao, 2012; Wigglesworth & Storch, 2012; Brooks & Swain, 2009). However, much is still unknown about how CW promotes higher quality L2 writing and other L2 learning opportunities. The purpose of the current study was to examine second language collaborative writing in an under-researched EFL context to determine (1) whether …

Exploring Associations Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Emotion Regulation, And Problem Behaviors Among Adolescents In Residential Treatment, Kiersten Alicia Hawes Jan 2021

Exploring Associations Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Emotion Regulation, And Problem Behaviors Among Adolescents In Residential Treatment, Kiersten Alicia Hawes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The high prevalence of conditions among adolescents such as anxiety, depression, substance use and suicide has become a global concern. Given the growing rates of internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems at the onset of adolescence, researchers have begun to find interest in identifying associations that account for dysfunctional patterns and problem behaviors. Findings suggest that these negative psychological and behavioral outcomes could be linked to exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) like abuse, neglect, violence, and household dysfunction. The present study investigated associations between ACEs, difficulties in emotion regulation, and problem behaviors among a sample of 43 adolescents age 11-17 …

Reclaiming The Revolutionaries: African American Organizing During The Interwar Period In Memphis, Tennessee, Matthew Isaacs Jan 2021

Reclaiming The Revolutionaries: African American Organizing During The Interwar Period In Memphis, Tennessee, Matthew Isaacs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The global black freedom struggle of the early twentieth century took many turns, while building momentum into the post-World War II era. Along the way, an interracial coterie of activists and disparate organizations rallied around a mass movement for black advancement. They enlarged avenues of resistance and developed strategies for cooperative alliances that laid the groundwork for future organizations and activists, often in areas that remain understudied. This dissertation examines one of those locations, Memphis, Tennessee, and its engagement with the global black freedom struggle during the interwar period. Due to a convergence of local, national, and international forces, the …

The Empirical Relationship Between Cds Premiums, Bond Yields, And Stock Prices During The 2007-2008 Financial Crisis: Causality, Co-Movement And Price Discovery, Yi Lu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation provides a comprehensive study of the credit-default swaps (CDS). In the short-run, we review and synthesize literature across disciplines and offer a theoretical framework of the empirical relationship between CDS premiums, bond yields, and stock prices. Theoretically, the credit risk captured by CDS and bond spreads should be equal, since both CDS and bond spreads are the risk premiums associated with corporations risky instruments. However, data reveal a significant difference between the two spreads. Stock prices, as well, should impact CDS and bond spreads. In a panel time-series framework with daily data of 96 corporations from North America, …

In the first essay, hedonic regression on transaction data is the favored method to measure the impact of adverse environmental characteristics. However, this method only weakly identifies the direct causal relationship of unfavorable factors on house prices. The paper found a weak negative impact of 23% on the house price index in the early stage between treatment and control zip code using a robust two-way fixed effects estimation. The diagnostic of the two-way fixed effects estimators found no issues with negative weights, but the sites exhibit a wide range of heterogeneous treatment effects. In the second essay, we found empirically …

Detection And Explanation Of Distributed Denial Of Service (Ddos) Attack Through Interpretable Machine Learning, Saikat Das

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) is a network-based attack where the aim of the attacker is to overwhelm the victim server. The attacker floods the server by sending enormous amount of network packets in a distributed manner beyond the servers capacity and thus causing the disruption of its normal service. In this dissertation, we focus to build intelligent detectors that can learn by themselves with less human interactions and detect DDoS attacks accurately. Machine learning (ML) has promising outcomes throughout the technologies including cybersecurity and provides us with intelligence when applied on Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs). In addition, from the …

Explanation Techniques Using Markov Logic Networks, Khan Mohammad Al Farabi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Explaining the results of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML) algorithms is crucial given the rapid growth and potential applicability of these methods in critical domains including healthcare, defense, autonomous driving, etc. While AI/ML approaches yield highly accurate results in many challenging tasks such as natural language understanding, visual recognition, game playing, etc., the underlying principles behind such results are not easily understood. Thus, the trust in AI/ML methods for critical application domains is significantly lacking. While there has been progress in explaining classifiers, there are two significant drawbacks. First, current explanation approaches assume independence in the data instances …

Waveform And Geodynamic Modeling Of Seismicity Associated With The Charlevoix Seismic Zone, Oluwaseun Idowu Fadugba

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The Charlevoix seismic zone (CSZ) is the most seismically active region in eastern Canada. It is located within the Late Proterozoic-Early Cambrian St. Lawrence rift zone in southeastern Quebec. The location was also the site of a Devonian impact crater. The CSZ poses a high seismic risks due to its seismicity compared to the other seismic zones in the area and its proximity to densely populated cities (e.g., Quebec City, Ottawa, and Montreal). It is also responsible for much of the seismic hazard in New England. Previous studies in the CSZ observed a maximum compressive stress orientation of N86, which …

Entrepreneurial Developments In The Life And Works Of Johann Sperger (17501812), Joel Scott Schnackel Jan 2021

Entrepreneurial Developments In The Life And Works Of Johann Sperger (17501812), Joel Scott Schnackel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Adolf Meiers Konzertante Musik fr Kontraba in der Wiener Klassik shows how the contrabass player and composer Johann Matthias Sperger (17501812) participated in both the public and private arenas of high society, toured as a soloist, and played in the leading Kapelle orchestras. His mastery of his instrument, which earned him the reputation of being one of the greatest soloists on the Viennese contrabass, has to this day overshadowed his reputation as a composer. This dissertation builds upon Meiers work, concentrating on Sperger as an entrepreneurial composer-performer who over time developed the skills of what today we would call strategic …

The Effect Of Pre- And Postnatal Diet Exposure On Gut Morphology, Function And Inflammation, Suman Sharma Jan 2021

The Effect Of Pre- And Postnatal Diet Exposure On Gut Morphology, Function And Inflammation, Suman Sharma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Consumption of high fat diet and obesity have been shown to increase risk of intestinal inflammation. Interestingly, early life exposure to a high fat diet (HFD), during gestation and lactation, also increases the risk of these inflammatory gut conditions in the offspring even in adulthood. Therefore, we hypothesized that using a rationally designed diet containing high amounts of fermentable fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, components that are known to improve gut inflammation, and providing this diet at weaning will improve inflammatory conditions later in life. Healthy (8 male and 8 female) C57BL/6 mice were used. 6 pairs were given HF …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Language learners identity construction and language learning through narratives (Norton 2010; Johnson 2015) and multimodal technologies (Lam 2006; White 2007) have been found to be effective ways to facilitate ESL learning. Additionally, Multimodal pedagogies and narrative practices in the language classroom facilitate L2 learning, investment in language learning, and learners identity and agency construction (Crandall 2018; Johnson & Kendrick, 2017). Further, racism and linguicism are aspects of language learners lives that affect their language learning trajectories (Corona & Block, 2020; Dovchin, 2019). Few studies, however, examine how multimodal narrative practices in L2 classrooms can foster learners investment in language learning …

Prompting Self-Explanations During The Learning Of Probability: Content-Specific Versus Generic Versus Generic With A Form Of Guidance, Genghu Shi Jan 2021

Prompting Self-Explanations During The Learning Of Probability: Content-Specific Versus Generic Versus Generic With A Form Of Guidance, Genghu Shi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Learners often cannot apply (transfer) the knowledge they learned from instructional settings into a new context. Therefore, their knowledge is likely inert. Research shows that learners must be actively involved in learning construction activities to enable knowledge transfer to occur. Self-explanation is one such constructive cognitive activity that involves explaining learning materials (expository texts, worked examples) to oneself with attempts to make sense of new information. It has been shown to support deep comprehension and knowledge transfer. However, self-explanations usually cannot be spontaneously generated by learners, but need to be elicited by prompts. The prompts can range from generic type …

Triangulating The Webs Of Environment Influences, Bacteria, And Antibiotics., Prabin Shrestha Jan 2021

Triangulating The Webs Of Environment Influences, Bacteria, And Antibiotics., Prabin Shrestha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The importance of maintaining a healthy microbiome is being recognized increasingly. Our research in the gut microbiome and environmental pollutants suggests that pollutants like particulate matter (PM2.5) and nanometals can induce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and decrease the microbiome stability. Additionally, the abusive use of antibiotics in the past has led to great changes in the microbiome and caused the rise of many antibiotic-resistant strains.Developing a new antibiotic is costly and time-consuming. Methods to improve the existing drugs should be cost-effective. A narrow-spectrum antibiotic that targets only the problematic pathogens should prevent microbiome disruption and reduce the rise of antibiotic …

Environment, Brain, And Behavior: Neuroendocrine Mechanisms Underlying Seasonal Rhythms In Stress, Immunity, And The Gut Microbiota In Siberian Hamsters (Phodopus Sungorus), Elyan Shor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The daily axial rotation of the Earth and its annual orbit around the sun both result in recurring fluctuations in geophysical cycles, thus creating cyclic changes in environmental factors. Organisms that can anticipate these environmental changes and adapt appropriately may maximize their survival and fitness. Such adaptations manifest themselves as biological rhythms: rhythmic shifts in physiology and behavior that match rhythmic shifts in environmental conditions. Among the most predictable environmental cues in temperate regions is the annual progression of changes in day length, and the capacity to measure and respond to seasonal changes in the light cycle is termed photoperiodism. …

Parametric And Non-Parametric Approaches To Factorial Data Analysis., Prabin Shrestha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Factorial design is one of the best ways to screen different factors in a system of study. It allows the study of the main effects and their interactions at the same time. We used the 2k-factorial design to screen different factors that affect the bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics. Through simulation studies, we examined the sensitivity and specificity of four different approaches to analyze the factorial data under different scenarios. The parametric ANOVA showed higher sensitivity and specificity for normally distributed data, but it failed largely for non-normal data. Rank-ANOVA had very high sensitivity and specificity for both normal and non-normal …
