When Words Fail: Why Ai-Driven Context Beats Word Error Rate For Safety-Critical Air Traffic Control, Muhammad Maaz
When Words Fail: Why Ai-Driven Context Beats Word Error Rate For Safety-Critical Air Traffic Control, Muhammad Maaz
Theses and Dissertations
Accurate speech-to-text transcription is critical for Air Traffic Control (ATC) to en- sure safety and operational efficiency. However, existing Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems struggle with domain-specific phraseology, high noise levels, and real-time constraints. This work explores domain adaptation strategies of OpenAI’s Whisper ASR model, applying Transfer Learning and Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) on ATC benchmark and a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) corpus. Experimental results show that fine- tuning significantly reduces Word Error Rate (WER) from 55.2% to 6.8%, yet WER alone fails to capture safety-critical transcription errors. To address WER’s limitations, we introduce the Contextual Error Rate (CER), a novel …

Diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder, cocaine type (i.e., cocaine use disorder), outlined in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, imply that the disorder arises, at least in part, from the maladaptive allocation of behavior to drug use. To date, however, the neural circuits involved in the allocation of behavior have not been systematically evaluated. Herein, a chemogenetics approach (i.e., designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREADDs)) was utilized in combination with a concurrent choice self-administration experimental paradigm to evaluate the role of the mesolimbic neurocircuit in the allocation of behavior. Pharmacological activation …

The power system is gradually transitioning into low inertia due to integrating substantial intermittency quantity of converter-based renewable energy sources, such as wind and photovoltaic power, into the current power grid network. This integration presents significant inertia and frequency control challenges to the network as a result of a decrease in the percentage of synchronous generators. Moreover, faster frequency deviations are posed by the mismatch between the supply and demand during contingencies, which creates difficulties in preserving the frequency stability of the power system. This research explores the impacts of renewable energy sources (RESs) on grid inertia and frequency management …

Occupational and Environmental Medicine Journal of Indonesia
Background: About 10-15% of medical examinations of workers at upstream oil and gas companies are not conducted properly. In some cases, workers die at worksites. Many doctors carrying out the assessment lack the competency to assess occupational risks. In this study, we developed a scoring system for ‘fitness for work’ assessment, which can be used by trained doctors.
Methods: Diagnostic testing was done with comparing the results of the determination screening fitness for work using a scoring system with the determine fitness for work results by Occupational Medicine Specialist as a gold standard in the same group. The entire 607 …
