Peer Effects And Recidivism: The Role Of Race And Age, Kegon Teng Kok Tan, Mariyana Zapryanova
Economics: Faculty Publications
Recidivism rates are a growing concern due to the high cost of imprisonment and the high rate of ex-prisoners returning back to prison. One policy-relevant and potentially important determinant of recidivism is the composition of peer inmates. In this paper, we study the role of peer effects within a correctional facility using data on almost 80,000 individuals serving time in Georgia. We exploit randomness in peer-composition over time within prisons to identify effects of peers on recidivism rates. We find no evidence of peer effects for property or drug-related crimes in the general prison population. However, we find strong peer …

Cyclic Voltammetric Simulations On Batteries With Porous Electrodes, Xue-Fan Cai, Sheng Sun
Journal of Electrochemistry
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are among the most widely used energy storage devices. Whole-cell modeling and simulations of LIBs can optimize the design of batteries with lower costs and higher speeds. The Pseudo-Two-Dimensional (P2D) electrochemical model is among the most famous whole-cell models and widely applied in LIB simulations. P2D model consists of a series of kinetic equations to model Li+/Li diffusion in working/counter electrodes and electrolytes, which are filled in the porous electrodes and separator, and reactions at the interface of electrolyte and active particles. The traditional applications of P2D model, however, are limited to the cases where …

A New Conatus For The New World: Dewey’S Response To Perfectionist Conceptions Of Democratic Education, Jasmin Özel, Dave Beisecker, Joe Ervin
Philosophy Faculty Research
We argue for a reconsideration of the claim that Spinoza’s perfectionist conception of education was ushering in a form of radical humanism distinctly favorable to democratic ideals. With the rise of democratic societies and the corresponding need to constitute educational institutions within those societies, a more thoroughgoing commitment to democratic social ideals arose, first and foremost in American educational thought. This commitment can be seen especially in Dewey’s philosophy of education. Specifically, Dewey and Spinoza had strikingly distinct conceptions of the overall aims of schooling. While Spinoza takes the aim of education to be the perfection of a student’s original …
Computational Methods For Comparative Analyses Of Discourses, Zachary Stine
Computational Methods For Comparative Analyses Of Discourses, Zachary Stine
Theses and Dissertations
An underexplored aspect of the abundant linguistic data available for computational analysis is the potential for conducting large-scale comparative analyses between different discourses as a more rigorous complement to existing methods. A significant obstacle in comparative studies is the requirement that a researcher distinguish between discursive distinctions that are superficial and those that reflect deeper, structural relationships between the discourses being compared. In this dissertation, I describe two methodologies for comparing discourses in terms of their underlying structures, drawing on distributional semantic models and information theory. These methodologies are explored within three case studies in which the discourses of several …

Carbon-Based Nanostructured Materials For Energy And Water Purification Applications, Daniel Nde
Theses and Dissertations
High demand of energy consumption and a decline in available water sources are two critical issues our growing world is facing today. There are urgent needs to develop efficient ways to convert and store renewable energy and to remove contaminants from wastewater to obtain clean water. To solve the energy issue, hydrogen production from water splitting using renewable energy is one of the solutions, which calls for highly efficient water-splitting electrocatalysts. To solve the clean water issue, filtration membranes using graphene-based nanostructures have received increased attention. In the first project of this work, we use two approaches to synthesize the …

Evaluating The Use Of The L1 In A French Language Classroom, Joyce Esther Hiaumiti Guidi
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have explored how different balances of first language (L1) and target language (TL) use in a foreign language classroom impact students' fluency and proficiency in TL acquisition. Research has shown that the use of the L1 in a foreign language classroom is done in order to determine the most effective way to raise the proficiency of second language learners to the level that is expected within their classrooms (Lee & Muncie, 2006). The use of the L1 is not something that is uncommon, even in the highest levels of foreign language instruction, although some believe it could inhibit learner …

Development Of Radiochemical Quality Control Methods For Ra-223 And Th-227 Radiotherapies, Abigail Hasson
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Introduction. Radiolabeled molecules for use in disease detection and targeted treatment are a mainstay of patient management. The majority of radiopharmaceuticals deployed to date undergo a single radioactive transition (decay) to reach a stable ground state. Complex emitters, which produce a series of daughter radionuclides, are emerging as novel radiopharmaceuticals, and there is a need for the proper validation of content and purity using common quality control instrumentation. Hypothesis. There is a need for proper characterization of complex emitters for more accurate quality control on readily available equipment. Here, we demonstrate the novel characterization of Th-227 and Ra-223 using a …

Locally Dependent Natural Image Priors For Non-Blind And Blind Image Deconvolution., Kaustav Nandy Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Degradation of photographic images is a common phenomenon that can occur due to several reasons. Astronomical images may be degraded due to atmospheric factors or telescope optics. Photographs taken using standard digital cameras may be blurred due to lack of focus, due to motion of the subject, due to low resolution, or due to camera shake during relatively long exposures. Often one wishes to correct for the effect of such degradation and recover the original image, and this has been a long-standing research problem in digital imaging. Effective solutions depend critically on the context of the problem and the type …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
To contribute meaningfully to a session entitled “Deforestation” with a proposed paper title of “Trees in Pastoral Zones; Landuse Standards in the 21st Century” necessitates I carefully define the scope of my contribution. My paper will draw on my experiences as an ecologist working in the pastoral lands of New Zealand in roles that have led me to delve increasingly into what constitutes sustainability (of people, land and economy) for a tiny multicultural nation maturing amidst the remnants of a unique Gondwanaland ecosystem. As New Zealand’s Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment (PCE) I now examine a very wide range …
