Implications From Uranium-Series Disequilibria In A Bi-Lithologic Melt With Varying Lithospheric Caps, Juliet Messer
Implications From Uranium-Series Disequilibria In A Bi-Lithologic Melt With Varying Lithospheric Caps, Juliet Messer
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Both spreading rates and local magma supply to mid-ocean ridges affect crustal construction styles and ridge morphology, alternately leading to either asymmetrical (detachment faulting) or symmetrical faulting styles. Uranium-series isotopic disequilibria in mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) may provide insight into how melt supply variations relate to ridges’ accretion styles, a processes that are not well understood. I use Reactive Porous Flow (RPF) equilibrium and disequilibrium modeling to simulate U-series disequilibria at mid-ocean ridge (MOR) generated by melt supply variations at both asymmetrical and symmetrical ridge segments.
Guided by my modeling, I predict that enhanced melt contributions from enriched pyroxenitic mantle …
Reducing Surgical Site Infections Through Combination Skin Preparation: A Benchmark Study, Jennifer Schacherer
Reducing Surgical Site Infections Through Combination Skin Preparation: A Benchmark Study, Jennifer Schacherer
MSN Capstone Projects
Reducing surgical site infections allows for a tremendous reduction in healthcare costs, reduces length of hospital stay, decreases hospital readmissions, and promotes patient safety. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that surgical site infections have a 3% mortality rate and 75% of all surgical site infection-related deaths are directly attributable to the surgical site infection (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2020). With millions of surgeries being performed every year, the reduction of surgical site infections enhances patient safety and ensures the protection of the public. Currently, no standard protocol exists for skin preparation beyond the parameters …

BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli is a major neonatal pathogen and the leading cause of early-onset sepsis in preterm newborns. Maternal E. coli strains are transmitted to the newborn causing invasive neonatal disease. However, there is a lack of data regarding the phenotypic and genotypic characterization of E. coli strains colonizing pregnant women during labor.
METHODS: This prospective study performed at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center (OUHSC) from March 2014 to December 2015, aimed to investigate the colonization rate, and the phylogeny, antibiotic resistance traits, and invasive properties of E. coli strains colonizing the cervix of fifty pregnant women diagnosed with …
Classrooms Into Courtrooms, Naomi M. Mann
Classrooms Into Courtrooms, Naomi M. Mann
Faculty Scholarship
The federal Department of Education’s (DOE) 2020 Title IX Rule fundamentally transformed the relationship between postsecondary schools (schools) and students. While courts have long warned against turning classrooms into courtrooms, the 2020 Rule nonetheless imposed a mandatory quasi-criminal courtroom procedure for Title IX sexual harassment investigatory proceedings in schools. This transformation is a reflection of the larger trend of importing criminal law norms and due process protections into Title IX school proceedings. It is especially regressive at a time where calls for long-overdue criminal justice reform are reaching a boiling point across the nation. Its effects are especially troubling because …

Ambiguity, Rinoi Imada
Ambiguity, Rinoi Imada
Theses
Ambiguity explores the sense of ambiguous identity through conceptual investigations of glass and language structure. This body of work and thesis refer to my personal experience and scholarly research to observe transformation and transition of identity. My thesis considers glass as a phenomenal substance through its transformative materiality; my body of work reflects materiality of glass as an ephemeral identity of humanity. Utilizing glass as a transformative material, my body of work is the result of experimental art practices which are observations of photography, fusing glass techniques, live and site-specific gestures, and hotshop glass techniques.

Inflection points, kinks, and jumps identify places where the relationship between dependent and independent variables switches in some important way. Although these switch points are often mentioned in management research, their presence in the data is either ignored, or postulated ad hoc by testing arbitrarily specified functional forms (e.g., U or inverted U-shaped relationships). This is problematic if we want accurate tests for our theories. To address this issue, we provide an integrative framework for the identification of nonlinearities. Our approach constitutes a precursor step that researchers will want to conduct before deciding which estimation model may be most appropriate. …

The Arkansas Code And Georgia V. Public.Resource.Org, Daniel Bell
Arkansas Law Notes
The United States Supreme Court decided Georgia v. Public.Resource.Org, Inc. (“PRO”) in late April, 2020, a case with major implications for those who rely on the Arkansas statutes. The case addressed whether extra materials Georgia includes in its official statutes, the annotations, can be copyrighted, or if they are in the public domain and can be freely distributed without permission. The case pitted two important competing interests against each other: the ability of citizens to freely access the official versions of laws of their state, versus the interests of a third-party publisher in being compensated for its work. Arkansas produces …

BACKGROUND: Games for health are a promising approach to health promotion. Their success depends on achieving both experiential (game) and instrumental (health) objectives. There is little to guide game for health (G4H) designers in integrating the science of behavior change with the art of game design.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to extend the Behaviour Change Wheel program planning model to develop Challenges for Healthy Aging: Leveraging Limits for Engaging Networked Game-Based Exercise (CHALLENGE), a G4H centered on increasing physical activity in insufficiently active older women.
METHODS: We present and apply the G4H Mechanics, Experiences, and Change (MECHA) …
Exploring Non-Invasive Features For Continuous Glucose Monitoring, Brian Allen Bogue Jimenez
Exploring Non-Invasive Features For Continuous Glucose Monitoring, Brian Allen Bogue Jimenez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Glucose monitoring technologies allow users to monitor glycemic fluctuations (e.g., current glucose levels in their blood, also known as glycemia). This is particularly important for individuals who suffer from diabetes mellitus (DM), commonly referred to as diabetes. Traditional self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) devices require the user to prick their finger and extract a blood drop to measure the blood glucose based on chemical reactions with the blood. Unlike traditional glucometer devices, non-invasive continuous glucose monitoring (NICGM) devices aim to solve these issues by consistently monitoring users’ blood glucose levels (BGL) and without invasively acquiring a sample. This Master Thesis aims …

Modeling And Optimization Of Spinning Parameters On Selectivity Of Polysulfone Hollow Fiber Membrane For Co2/Ch4 Separation, Intan Zaurah Mat Darus, Shahab Khademi, Musa Mailah, Lau Woei Jye, Alireza Khademi
Makara Journal of Technology
Hollow fiber membrane (HFM) and related technologies have recently become highly in demand and widely used in most industries and other areas recently. HFM could be used in different functions, from water and gas treatment to blood and medical applications. The paper describes the modeling of the effects of the spinning condition of a nonporous HFM on the membrane’s characteristics with the use of an automated hollow fiber fabrication system. An integrated, systematic experimental strategy based on the design of experiments was used to elaborate the effects of each parameter on selectivity. To obtain and sustain a satisfactory, significant selectivity …

This study used the finite difference method to develop a numerical model for pollutant transport phenomenon simulation. Mathematically, the phenomenon is often described by the advection–diffusion differential equation, which is obtained from a combination of the continuity equation and Fick’s first law. The Forward Time Central Space (FTCS) scheme is one of the explicit finite difference methods and is used in this study to solve the model due to its simplicity in solving a differential equation. Yet, this method is currently unstable, which results in oscillations in the model. Thus, a numerical filter (Hansen) is added to the FTCS method …

In October 1956, Dr. Deborah Coggins, health officer for Madison, Jefferson, and Taylor counties, sat down to lunch in Madison, Florida, with a public health nurse to discuss a matter of mutual official concern. Because of their busy schedules the lunch hour was the only mutually available time for the meeting. But since the doctor was white and the nurse black, the business luncheon led to the dismissal of the doctor by indignant commissioners of the three counties. Her “breach of social tradition” had been so serious, according to the commissioners, that it rendered her unfit to continue in the …

Race Relations And Florida Gubernatorial Politics Since The Brown Decision, David R. Colburn
Florida Historical Quarterly
The United States Supreme Court, on May 17, 1954, delivered its famous Brown decision which forbade separate public school systems for black and white children. Reaction throughout most of the South was swift, and among public officials it ranged from hostility and bitterness to mild anger. Georgia’s Governor Herman Talmadge was perhaps the most outspoken in his opposition to the decree: “The United States Supreme Court by its decision today has reduced our Constitution to a mere scrap of paper.” Mississippi’s Senator James Eastland was scarcely less vitriolic: “The South will not abide by nor obey this legislative decision by …

Slave Unrest In Florida, Ray Granade
Slave Unrest In Florida, Ray Granade
Florida Historical Quarterly
White Floridian, like other Southerners in the years before the Civil War, usually spoke of slave revolts in low, fearful voices. While their words indicated concern for the security of the group, their interest was essentially a personal one. They wondered how really safe they and their families were in the constant presence of vast numbers of servile blacks. Yet slave unrest involved more than insurrection. Murders, burglary, arson, rape, trespass were all crimes that an individual slave might commit even though he was not involved in an organized revolt. Floridians recognized these threats to their lives and property, yet …

A Processing-Structure-Properties-Performance (PSPP) map simply summarizes knowledge on the behavior of a given materials system. This is a helpful tool that may successfully serve as a standard means of communication on the physical and chemical mechanisms that regulate the performance of a materials system, as well as guidance on the sort of data necessary to correctly characterize that materials system as a whole. This article provides a literature review of how stainless-steel properties are affected by different treatment techniques in addition to a step-by-step methodology for creating a map for any materials system and then uses data regarding these methods …
