Probiotic Use During Antibiotic Therapy: Strengthening Provider Practices, Dana Williams Jan 2021

Probiotic Use During Antibiotic Therapy: Strengthening Provider Practices, Dana Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Antibiotics are some of the most commonly prescribed medications. However, their use is associated with many side effects, one of which is Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea (AAD). AAD is a common yet underreported side effect of antibiotic therapy that often leads to interrupted or premature discontinuation of antibiotic treatment that may result in a possible increase in long-term complications and other health implications related to AAD. The use of probiotics to prevent AAD and their general positive impact on gut and overall health are well-studied and documented. Providers are generally aware of the recommended best practice regarding probiotic prescribing to prevent AAD. …

Global Trade-Enabling Law, Panagiotis Delimatsis Jan 2021

Global Trade-Enabling Law, Panagiotis Delimatsis

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

Trade regulation may never have been in more flux than it is nowadays. Apart from the emergence of ‘megaregionals’ (more recently, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership – RCEP, or the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-pacific Partnership–CPTPP) and the difficulties in pursuing the objectives of the Doha Development Agenda, the increased heterogeneity of interests within the World Trade Organization (WTO) puts into question its ability to achieve its central objective of free(r) trade. While internally rethinking the future of the WTO, it seems opportune to discuss, and factor in the realities of everyday global trade. To this end, this Article argues that …

The Trump Administration's Critique Of The World Trade Organisation And Its Implications For The International Trading System, Dr. Kenneth Holland Jan 2021

The Trump Administration's Critique Of The World Trade Organisation And Its Implications For The International Trading System, Dr. Kenneth Holland

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

The crisis in which the World Trade Organization is in could be best understood as the product of the rise of China and the incredible power rivalry that it has sparked with the United States. The WTO was founded in 1995, at a time when the United States was the world’s sole superpower, and expectations were high that democracy was in the ascendancy. By 2013, however, with the ascension of Xi Jinping to the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, it was clear that China was growing increasingly authoritarian and illiberal. From Washington’s point of view, the WTO, with its …

Patriot Games: India And China: Brinkmanship In The Realm Of Apps, Neeraj Rajan Sabitha, Petros C. Mavroidis Jan 2021

Patriot Games: India And China: Brinkmanship In The Realm Of Apps, Neeraj Rajan Sabitha, Petros C. Mavroidis

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

India recently decided to ban a slew of applications (“apps”), mostly Chinese, accessed on mobile phones and other internet-based devices citing privacy and security concerns arising from the surreptitious mining and profiling of user data that is collected by these apps. It found these activities to be prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the state and public order. China responded that it suspected India’s decision to ban these apps to have violated the obligations that India had committed to under the framework of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Through this paper, we explore …

Interpreting The 'National Treatment' Obligation Under Gats, Anushree Malaviya Jan 2021

Interpreting The 'National Treatment' Obligation Under Gats, Anushree Malaviya

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

The General Agreement on Trade and Services 1994 (GATS) strikes a balance between liberalizing the trade in services among the Members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), while granting a considerable margin of discretion to the Members in the manner in which they choose to discharge their obligations. One of the most crucial obligations contained therein is that of National Treatment – which prohibits discrimination between foreign and domestic services. The bare text of the provision has however created more confusion rather than given clarity – particularly in light of the advent of new technology not envisaged at the time …

CMSI China Maritime Reports

China established Sansha City in 2012 to administer the bulk of its territorial and maritime claims in the South China Sea. Sansha is headquartered on Woody Island. The city’s jurisdiction includes the Paracel Islands, Zhongsha Islands, and Spratly Islands and most of the waters within China’s “ninedash line.” Sansha is responsible for exercising administrative control, implementing military-civil fusion, and carrying out the day-to-day work of rights defense, stability maintenance, environmental protection, and resource development. Since 2012, each level of the Chinese party-state system has worked to develop Sansha, improving the city’s physical infrastructure and transportation, communications, corporate ecosystem, party-state institutions, …

Dangerous Women/Women In Danger: Gendered Impacts Of The September 11th Attacks, Louise Cainkar Jan 2021

Dangerous Women/Women In Danger: Gendered Impacts Of The September 11th Attacks, Louise Cainkar

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

VERBAL AND PHYSICAL EXPRESSIONS of public animosity toward Arab and Muslim Americans surged in the United States in the first months after the attacks on September 11, 2001 (9/11), and then quelled to highly varying degrees afterward, depending on place (Levin 2017). This pattern was unlike punitive government actions, which continued nationwide at high levels for years (see Cainkar 2009). My ethnographic and sociological study of the impacts of 9/11 on Muslim Arabs in metropolitan Chicago, involving field research conducted between 2002 and 2005 and in-depth interviews with 102 Arab Muslims (45 percent of whom were women), found that women …

Debating Diya: Indirect Rule And The Transformation Of Islamic Law In British Colonial Northern Nigeria, Rabiat Akande Jan 2021

Debating Diya: Indirect Rule And The Transformation Of Islamic Law In British Colonial Northern Nigeria, Rabiat Akande

All Papers

Leading academic authority on British imperial governance, Dame Margery Perham famously made the above remark on the workings of indirect rule in Northern Nigeria—the colonial state resulting from the 1903 British conquest of the West African Sokoto Caliphate. First emerging on the heels of the 1857 mutiny in British India, British colonial indirect rule had a long and checkered history predating its arrival in Nigeria. The dominant understanding of the Indian rebellion was that of a revolt against empire’s anglicizing project with the consequence that it spurred the colonial state to turn to governing colonial populations through native institutions within …

The purpose of this study was to document member perceptions of an online community-based program that rapidly transitioned from an in-person format during the COVID-19 pandemic. To accomplish this, a sample of 24 adults living with brain injury who are members of the community program completed a survey, and a subsample of 11 of these participants were interviewed. Both quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed using a mixed-methods approach. Results from both methods coalesced around similar themes that indicated the importance of the program in increasing members’ quality of life. Survey results indicated that the majority of members prefer in-person …

Nurses’ Perceptions Of Caring For Patients In The Prone Position, Brianna Jean Judkins Jan 2021

Nurses’ Perceptions Of Caring For Patients In The Prone Position, Brianna Jean Judkins

Honors Theses and Capstones

Introduction: Prone positioning has been used for decades to supplement the treatment of patients diagnosed with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). The effects it has on improving lung aeration, reducing compression, and increasing alveolar recruitment, have become evident through continued research. As a result of the H1N1 and COVID-19 pandemics, proning has become a popular and effective adjunct to treatment. Despite its increased use, there continues to be minimal research regarding nurses’ perceptions of the maneuver and patient care. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to understand the perceptions of nurses caring for patients in the prone position. Identifying …

Roles Of Non-Frankia Bacteria In Root Nodule Formation And Function In Alnus Sp., Kelsey Christine Mercurio Jan 2021

Roles Of Non-Frankia Bacteria In Root Nodule Formation And Function In Alnus Sp., Kelsey Christine Mercurio

Honors Theses and Capstones

Plant roots are home to a wide variety of beneficial microbes; understanding and optimizing plant-microbe interactions may be critical to enhance global food security in a sustainable, equitable way. With the help of their nitrogen-fixing bacterial partner, Frankia, actinorhizal plants form symbiotic root nodules and play important roles in agroforestry and land reclamation. However, Frankia does not live alone in nodules, and the other microbial residents may contribute to nodule formation and function. We collected root nodules from alder trees (Alnus sp.) in 2018 and 2019, then isolated DNA and individual bacterial strains to characterize the nodule microbial …

Sars-Cov-2: An Investigation On Mutagenicity And Its Effects On Infectivity And Mortality, Tyler Elliott Silverwood

Honors Theses and Capstones

SARS-CoV-2, the etiological agent of the COVID-19 pandemic, has rapidly become a worldwide public health concern. Classified as a betacoronavirus, it is the third human coronavirus (HCoV) to emerge in the 21st century that causes severe disease, alongside SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. The genome consists of open reading frames encoding accessory proteins and four structural proteins, including the spike protein which is a key determinant of host cell tropism. Mutations within the genome, particularly the spike gene, have been linked in-vitro to increased binding affinity to the human receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2), increased fitness in human hosts, and immune evasion. …

Examining University Stakeholders' Perception Of The Implementation Of Internationalization In Higher Education Institutions In The Uae, Mohammed Madi Yousif

Dissertations

The globalization of economies and societies worldwide, has brought massive transformations in the field of higher education, creating a context to include an ‘international’ dimension in higher education institutions (HEIs). Global learning is essential in the development of cognitive skills, as well as for increased success among academics, hence institutional stakeholders such as administrators, faculty, and students are key participants in initiatives to internationalize academia. The current study examines the perspectives of institutional stakeholders (top administrators, faculty, and students) concerning the process and implementation of internationalization of higher education in the UAE, revealing its potential benefits and challenges. In a …

Family, School And Community Educational Partnerships: Development Of A Comprehensive Program For The United Arab Emirates, Sherin M. Abu Shamon

Dissertations

Family, school and community educational partnerships (FSCEPs) contribute significantly to the development and growth of students. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), this has not received due consideration. This study aimed to evaluate current FSCEPs practices and develop a comprehensive, culturally appropriate program for the UAE. A three-phase mixed method design was used: exploratory sequential design phase, developmental phase using the Delphi Method, and a pilot to test the proposed model. Structured and semi-structured interviews, observation and case study surveys were used to investigate current FSCEPs implementation; barriers and opportunities influencing practices and partnerships, and recommendations from participants. Data was …

The Great Southern Buy-Back: The Colony Of Western Australia And The Great Southern Railway 1880-1897, Thomas Goode

Theses

This thesis examines the circumstances surrounding the building of the Great Southern Railway as a land-grant railway in the colony of Western Australia in the 1880s and its purchase by the government in 1896. In the early 1880s the steamship companies bringing mail and passengers from overseas and the eastern colonies, preferred Albany to Fremantle, adding an uncomfortable three to four day journey to the capital Perth. To overcome this difficulty, the government proposed to build a railway from Albany to the existing network at Beverley. This railway was to be funded by grants of land to the private company …

How The Catholic Church’S Trinitarian-Christocentric Theology Of Communion Might Inform The Way In Which Spouses Are Formed For The Apostolate Of Family Life, Joshua Bitting Jan 2021

How The Catholic Church’S Trinitarian-Christocentric Theology Of Communion Might Inform The Way In Which Spouses Are Formed For The Apostolate Of Family Life, Joshua Bitting

Theses

This project explores the nature and mission of the Christian family viewed theologically as a domestic Church. Drawing upon the Catholic Church’s robust Trinitarian and Christocentric communio theology, it is the aim of this endeavour to demonstrate how a robust Trinitarian anthropology, complemented by a culture-first approach, may pave the way for an ongoing marriage catechumenate that will equip spouses to embrace and put into effect the universal call to holiness and mission expressly called for by the Second Vatican Council and contemporary popes.

The first part of the project will articulate the biblical, historical, and theological foundations upon which …
