Global Syndromes Induced By Changes In Solutes Of The World’S Large Rivers, Jiang Wu, Nan Xu, Yichu Wang, Wei Zhang, Alistair G.L. Borthwick, Jinren Ni

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

AbstractSolute-induced river syndromes have grown in intensity in recent years. Here we investigate seven such river syndromes (salinization, mineralization, desalinization, acidification, alkalization, hardening, and softening) associated with global trends in major solutes (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, SO42−, Cl−, HCO3−) and dissolved silica in the world’s large rivers (basin areas ≥ 1000 km2). A comprehensive dataset from 600 gauge stations in 149 large rivers reveals nine binary patterns of co-varying trends in runoff and solute concentration. Solute-induced river syndromes are associated with remarkable increases in total dissolved solids (68%), chloride (81%), sodium (86%) and sulfate (142%) fluxes from rivers to oceans …

Goldenwind At Semeval-2021 Task 5: Orthrus – An Ensemble Approach To Identify Toxicity, M Palomino, D Grad, J Bedwell

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Many new developments to detect and mitigate toxicity are currently being evaluated. Weare particularly interested in the correlation between toxicity and the emotions expressed inonline posts. While toxicity may be disguisedby amending the wording of posts, emotionswill not. Therefore, we describe here an ensemble method to identify toxicity and classify the emotions expressed on a corpus ofannotated posts published by Task 5 of SemEval 2021—our analysis shows that the majority of such posts express anger, sadness andfear. Our method to identify toxicity combinesa lexicon-based approach, which on its ownachieves an F1 score of 61.07%, with a supervised learning approach, which …

The Challenges Of Engaging Island Communities: Lessons On Renewable Energy From A Review Of 17 Case Studies, Gina Kallis, Phedeas Stephanides, Etienne Bailey, Patrick Devine-Wright, Konstantinos Chalvatis, Ian Bailey

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Islands have attracted growing attention as sites of renewable energy generation, both for generating commercial low-carbon energy and to improve local energy conditions. However, significant challenges exist in achieving fair distribution in the benefits and costs of developments located on or around islands and in engaging local communities on proposals for installations. A broad literature exists on the merits of different community engagement techniques but important gaps remain in understandings of the particular challenges of engaging with island communities on energy issues. Based on a thematic literature review, this article examines general principles and considerations for community engagement on energy …

Implementation Of The ‘Take Stock’ Hot Debrief Tool In The Ed: A Quality Improvement Project, Max Sugarman, Blair Graham, Sarah Langston, Pam Nelmes, John Matthews

Peninsula Medical School

Hot debriefing (HoD) describes a structured team-based discussion which may be initiated following a significant event. Benefits may include improved teamwork, staff well-being and identification of learning opportunities. Existing literature indicates that while staff value HoD following significant events, it is infrequently undertaken in practice. Internationally, several frameworks for HoD have been developed, although none are widely adopted for use in the ED. A quality improvement project was conducted to introduce HoD into a single UK ED in North West England, between January and March 2019. Following stakeholder consultation, the 9-item ‘TAKE STOCK’ tool was developed. Implementation of the tool …

Memories about the spatial environment, such as the locations of foraging patches, are expected to affect how individuals move around the landscape. However, individuals differ in the ability to remember spatial locations (spatial cognitive ability) and evidence is growing that these inter-individual differences influence a range of fitness proxies. Yet empirical evaluations directly linking inter-individual variation in spatial cognitive ability and the development and structure of movement paths are lacking. We assessed the performance of young pheasants ( Phasianus colchicus ) on a spatial cognition task before releasing them into a novel, rural landscape and tracking their movements. We quantified …

Feedback Mechanisms Stabilise Degraded Turf Algal Systems At A Co2 Seep Site, Ben P. Harvey, Ro Allen, Sylvain Agostini, Linn J. Hoffmann, Koetsu Kon, Tina C. Summerfield, Shigeki Wada, Jason M. Hall-Spencer Jan 2021

Feedback Mechanisms Stabilise Degraded Turf Algal Systems At A Co2 Seep Site, Ben P. Harvey, Ro Allen, Sylvain Agostini, Linn J. Hoffmann, Koetsu Kon, Tina C. Summerfield, Shigeki Wada, Jason M. Hall-Spencer

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

AbstractHuman activities are rapidly changing the structure and function of coastal marine ecosystems. Large-scale replacement of kelp forests and coral reefs with turf algal mats is resulting in homogenous habitats that have less ecological and human value. Ocean acidification has strong potential to substantially favour turf algae growth, which led us to examine the mechanisms that stabilise turf algal states. Here we show that ocean acidification promotes turf algae over corals and macroalgae, mediating new habitat conditions that create stabilising feedback loops (altered physicochemical environment and microbial community, and an inhibition of recruitment) capable of locking turf systems in place. …

Measuring Individual And Group Flow In Collaborative Improvisational Dance, Klara Łucznik, Jon May Jan 2021

Measuring Individual And Group Flow In Collaborative Improvisational Dance, Klara Łucznik, Jon May

School of Psychology

This study investigated flow experience during group collaborations of creative dance improvisation, where group flow was defined as periods when most members of a group reported a flow experience. Sixteen dancers took part in the experimental sessions, performing improvisational tasks in groups of four. We chose two different types of dance task, hypothesising that dancers’ external focus upon the group's shared surroundings and awareness of others might facilitate group flow experience; while an internal focus upon one's own mental imagery might inhibit it. A novel, video-stimulated recall method to assess flow experience was used to track time patterns and shared …

Good Enough For Governance? Audit And Marine Biodiversity Offsetting In Australia, Holly J. Niner, Samuel Randalls Jan 2021

Good Enough For Governance? Audit And Marine Biodiversity Offsetting In Australia, Holly J. Niner, Samuel Randalls

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Biodiversity offsetting is often presented as a way to manage competing demands of environmental protection and economic development. It is premised on the transparent demonstration of how aims of no net loss of biodiversity (NNL) or similar are met in practice. This is complicated in marine systems where ecological predictions are commonly highly uncertain, knowledge of ecological restoration is low and administrative governance is complex. Drawing on a case study of marine biodiversity offsetting in Australia, this paper shows how these uncertainties pose practical challenges for both producers and consumers of marine biodiversity offsets, needing to progress with decision-making while …

A Novel Method Based On Long Short Term Memory Network And Discrete-Time Zeroing Neural Algorithm For Upper-Limb Continuous Estimation Using Semg Signals, Yuanyuan Chai, Keping Liu, Chunxu Li, Zhongbo Sun, Long Jin, Tian Shi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this paper, a novel closed-loop model based on surface electromyography (sEMG) comprised a long short term memory (LSTM) network and discrete-time zeroing neural algorithm called zeroing neural network (ZNN), which is developed to estimate joint angles and angular velocities of human upper limb with joint damping. The dynamic model of human upper limb with joint damping is set up as the initial equation. Then, the LSTM network is proposed as an open-loop model which described the input-output relationship between the sEMG signals and joint motion intention. Besides, a novel closed-loop model is built via ZNN for eliminating the predicted …

Tephra Deposition And Bonding With Reactive Oxides Enhances Burial Of Organic Carbon In The Bering Sea, Jack Longman, Thomas M. Gernon, Martin R. Palmer, Hayley R. Manners Jan 2021

Tephra Deposition And Bonding With Reactive Oxides Enhances Burial Of Organic Carbon In The Bering Sea, Jack Longman, Thomas M. Gernon, Martin R. Palmer, Hayley R. Manners

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Preservation of organic carbon (OC) in marine sediments exerts a major control on the cycling of carbon in the Earth system. In these marine environments, OC preservation may be enhanced by diagenetic reactions in locations where deposition of fragmental volcanic material called tephra occurs. While the mechanisms by which this process occurs are well understood, site-specific studies of this process are limited. Here, we report a study of sediments from the Bering Sea (IODP Site U1339D) to investigate the effects of marine tephra deposition on carbon cycling during the Pleistocene and Holocene. Our results suggest that tephra layers are loci …

A Sph Model With Open Relaxation Boundary For Wave Generation And Absorption, G Zhu, J Hughes, S Zheng, D Greaves Jan 2021

A Sph Model With Open Relaxation Boundary For Wave Generation And Absorption, G Zhu, J Hughes, S Zheng, D Greaves

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this paper, a numerical wave tank with open relaxation boundaryfor wave simulation is presented under the framework of weakly compressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). The open relaxationboundary consists of open boundaries and relaxation particles. A relaxation function is applied for the relaxation particles which are placed between the inflow/outflow zone and the fluid domain. Open particles lie inthe inflow/outflow regions to avoid kernel truncation. The open particlesand relaxation particles can be created and deleted depending on the fluidmotion around the open boundaries, and the properties of these particlescan be obtained from theoretical resolution or by extrapolating withinthe domain. The …

The Use Of Cyber Ranges In The Maritime Context: Assessing Maritime-Cyber Risks, Raising Awareness, And Providing Training, Kimberly Tam, Kemedi Moara-Nkwe, Kevin D. Jones

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

A good defensive strategy against evolving cyber threats and cybercrimes is to raise awareness and use that awareness to prepare technical mitigation and human defense strategies. A prime way to do this is through training. While there are already many sectors employing this strategy (e.g., space, smart buildings, business IT), the maritime sector has yet to take advantage of the available cyber-range technology to assess cyber risks and create appropriate training to meet those risks. Cyber security training can come in 2 forms; the first is so security professionals can raise their awareness on the latest and most urgent issues …

An Online Museum Of Stories: Literary Travel Writing For Cultural Tourism Development, C Mansfield, J Potočnik Topler Jan 2021

An Online Museum Of Stories: Literary Travel Writing For Cultural Tourism Development, C Mansfield, J Potočnik Topler

Plymouth Business School

With rising tourism interest in cultural heritage, destination management organisations, museums and other cultural institutions are seeking methods of unlocking the intangible cultural heritage of local residents and sharing that before it is lost. This is specific knowledge of the uses and practices of disappearing spaces in towns, of plants and their uses as foodstuffs, and in clothing and of work practices that were more in-tune with local, sustainable production. This contribution outlines new methods for building the ethnographic museum as a museum of stories, and proposes a model that explores narrative through literary travel writing for a new public.

Exploring Anatomy Coursework And Perceptions Of Occupational Therapy Students: A Survey Study, Ashleigh Giles, William Conrad, Dianna Lunsford, Kristin A. Valdes

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Occupational therapy practitioners utilize their knowledge of human anatomy to understand underlying anatomical dysfunction and how it impacts occupational performance. However, anatomy is not a required standalone course within occupational therapy curricula. This may leave students at a disadvantage throughout occupational therapy programs, fieldwork, and as practitioners. The primary purpose of this study was to explore graduate level occupational therapy students’ previous anatomy undergraduate coursework, student perceived preparedness of anatomical knowledge, and their performance in a mandatory Analysis of Human Movement course within our university’s occupational therapy graduate programs. The secondary purpose was to determine student interest in a standalone …

Occupational Therapy Students’ Experiences Of Team-Based Learning: A Multi-Year Study, Bhing-Leet Tan, I-Ling Yeh, Phyllis Liang

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Many health sciences disciplines have adopted team-based learning (TBL) as part of their education pedagogy, with studies showing increased classroom participation and learner satisfaction. However, it will be beneficial to explore the learning experiences of occupational therapy students in TBL using a mixed methods approach. In an undergraduate occupational therapy program, students undertook three clinical modules using TBL in years two and three. This study explored their perceptions and experiences of TBL. This was a mixed methods prospective cohort study, during which two cohorts of students from Academic Year (AY) 2016 and AY2017 completed the Team-Based Learning Student Assessment Instrument …

Developing A Conceptual Framework For Occupational Therapy Fellowship Programs: A Qualitative Content Analysis Study, Marcelo A. Silva Jan 2021

Developing A Conceptual Framework For Occupational Therapy Fellowship Programs: A Qualitative Content Analysis Study, Marcelo A. Silva

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Today’s health care environment calls for quality-care, the efficiency of services, a decrease in waste, and an increase in desired outcomes. This necessitates that occupational therapy (OT) practitioners engage in continuous professional development activities (i.e., continuing education, post-professional training) and lifelong learning to enhance their critical thinking and clinical reasoning. One way that OT practitioners can advance their clinical practice skills is through participating in OT fellowship programs, which are post-professional training programs aimed to advance one’s knowledge and skills in focused areas of practice. Using theory to guide practice is also essential for OT practitioners as they make evidence-based …
