The Radius Of The Umbrella Cloud Helps Characterize Large Explosive Volcanic Eruptions, Robert Constantinescu, Aurelian Hopulele-Gligor, Charles Connor, Costanza Bonadonna, Laura Connor, Jan Lindsay, Sylvain Charbonnier, Alain C.M. Volentik

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Eruption source parameters (in particular erupted volume and column height) are used by volcanologists to inform volcanic hazard assessments and to classify explosive volcanic eruptions. Estimations of source parameters are associated with large uncertainties due to various factors, including complex tephra sedimentation patterns from gravitationally spreading umbrella clouds. We modify an advection-diffusion model to investigate this effect. Using this model, source parameters for the climactic phase of the 2450 BP eruption of Pululagua, Ecuador, are different with respect to previous estimates (erupted mass: 1.5–5 × 1011 kg, umbrella cloud radius: 10–14 km, plume height: 20–30 km). We suggest large …

While Pacific salmon are economically and culturally important worldwide, Alaska, USA is one of the few remaining places on earth where sustainable management of salmon is possible, even in the face of wide-ranging threats, including overharvesting and the impacts of climate change. A continuing challenge that we face is to understand the ecological processes that result in sustainable salmon populations and report that science to stakeholders in a way that promotes decision-making to avoid the destruction of salmon populations that has occurred in most areas of the lower 48 states. To address this challenge, our studies in the southern Kenai …

Ethical Product Havens In The Global Diamond Trade: Using The Wayback Machine To Evaluate Ethical Market Outcomes, Trina Hamilton, Seth Cavello Jan 2021

Ethical Product Havens In The Global Diamond Trade: Using The Wayback Machine To Evaluate Ethical Market Outcomes, Trina Hamilton, Seth Cavello

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Who benefits from ethical product markets? While most ethical products (e.g. fair trade and eco-certified products) are intended to benefit marginalized communities and vulnerable ecosystems, the reality is that the geographic preferences exhibited by so-called ethical markets may, in fact, reinforce global inequities rather than remedy them. It can be difficult to evaluate the outcomes of ethical product markets, however, because we are often limited to data from a small number of industries with widely used standards and certifications. This research pilots a new methodology, using an online archive—the Wayback Machine, to evaluate shifts in countries' ethical market share, focusing …

Molybdenum Isotopes Unmask Slab Dehydration And Melting Beneath The Mariana Arc, Hong-Yan Li, Rui-Peng Zhao, Jie Li, Yoshihiko Tamura, Christopher Spencer, Robert J. Stern, Jeffrey G. Ryan, Yi-Gang Xu Jan 2021

Molybdenum Isotopes Unmask Slab Dehydration And Melting Beneath The Mariana Arc, Hong-Yan Li, Rui-Peng Zhao, Jie Li, Yoshihiko Tamura, Christopher Spencer, Robert J. Stern, Jeffrey G. Ryan, Yi-Gang Xu

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

How serpentinites in the forearc mantle and subducted lithosphere become involved in enriching the subarc mantle source of arc magmas is controversial. Here we report molybdenum isotopes for primitive submarine lavas and serpentinites from active volcanoes and serpentinite mud volcanoes in the Mariana arc. These data, in combination with radiogenic isotopes and elemental ratios, allow development of a model whereby shallow, partially serpentinized and subducted forearc mantle transfers fluid and melt from the subducted slab into the subarc mantle. These entrained forearc mantle fragments are further metasomatized by slab fluids/melts derived from the dehydration of serpentinites in the subducted lithospheric …

The Right To Benefit From Big Data As A Public Resource, Mary D. Fan Jan 2021

The Right To Benefit From Big Data As A Public Resource, Mary D. Fan

Articles

The information that we reveal from interactions online and with electronic devices has massive value—for both private profit and public benefit, such as improving health, safety, and even commute times. Who owns the lucrative big data that we generate through the everyday necessity of interacting with technology? Calls for legal regulation regarding how companies use our data have spurred laws and proposals framed by the predominant lens of individual privacy and the right to control and delete data about oneself. By focusing on individual control over droplets of personal data, the major consumer privacy regimes overlook the important question of …

Advisors Or Enablers? Bringing Professional Service Providers Into The Guiding Principles’ Fold, Anita Ramasastry Jan 2021

Advisors Or Enablers? Bringing Professional Service Providers Into The Guiding Principles’ Fold, Anita Ramasastry

Articles

After a decade, different businesses adhere to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). Some key commercial entities, however, remain largely outside of the UNGPs universe, including professional service providers (PSPs) who are retained by businesses to provide  expert advice and services. These advisors include lawyers, management consultants, architects and others. Some may have specialized units that provide advice on the UNGPs when retained solely for that purpose. But when asked to provide general commercial legal advice, to design a building, or restructure a business, such advisors do not typically appear to apply the UNGPs, to identify …

Christian Worship In Nagaland, Jane Elizabeth Laremore Jan 2021

Christian Worship In Nagaland, Jane Elizabeth Laremore

Masters Theses

Christianity has historically suppressed Naga traditional music and culture, and yet Christian music plays an important role in the construction of Naga identity. A brief history and overview of Christian music in Nagaland including, hymn singing, contemporary Christian music, and revival songs demonstrates how the unique social, cultural and political context of Nagaland has created a generational divide in worship style preferences and the birth of the revival song genre. Snapshots of the life and work of Naga composers further illustrate these themes and provide insight into the incorporation of Naga folk music in Christian worship. While advocates make strong …

The Moxon Tennyson : A Landmark In Victorian Illustration, Simon Cooke Jan 2021

The Moxon Tennyson : A Landmark In Victorian Illustration, Simon Cooke

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

A new perspective on a book that transformed Victorian illustration into a stand-alone art.

Edward Moxon’s 1857 edition of Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s Poems dramatically redefined the relationship between images and words in print. Cooke’s study, the first book to address the subject in over 120 years, presents a sweeping analysis of the illustrators and the complex and challenging ways in which they interpreted Tennyson’s poetry. This book considers the volume’s historical context, examining in detail the roles of publisher, engravers, and binding designer, as well as the material difficulties of printing its fine illustrations, which recreate the effects of painting. …

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

A constellation of essays that reanimates the work of this pivotal twentieth-century American poet for a new century.

This volume is the first to reconsider Roethke’s work in terms of the expanded critical approaches to literature that have emerged since his death in 1963. Editor William Barillas and over forty contributors, including highly respected literary scholars, critics, and writers such as Peter Balakian, Camille Paglia, Jay Parini, and David Wojahn, collectively make a case for Roethke’s poetry as a complete, unified, and evolving body of work. The accessible essays employ a number of approaches, including formalism, ecocriticism, reader-response, and feminist …

Radical Rattlers: A Narrative Of Latino Students At St. Mary’S University In The 1960’S, Edgar Velazquez Reynald Jan 2021

Radical Rattlers: A Narrative Of Latino Students At St. Mary’S University In The 1960’S, Edgar Velazquez Reynald

Capstone Projects

In the 1960s, St. Mary’s University saw an increase in Latino enrollment and a shift in student political attitudes from confidence in established politics in the early 1960s to radical activism at the end of the decade. The transition occurred as students engaged with the Civil Rights movement and then the Chicano movement. St. Mary’s distanced itself from radical forms of protest, as best exemplified by the formation off campus of the Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO) off campus, arguably the lynchpin of the Chicano movement in San Antonio. Attempting a reconciliation, St. Mary’s declared the 1969-1970 school year The …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Graphite from different sources has significant influence on the properties of graphene oxide (GO) and reactivity of GO towards further modification with other nanoparticles. However, such effect has not yet been properly explored. This study aims to investigate the characteristics and antimicrobial property of GO decorated with silver nanoparticles (known as Ag-GO composite) where the GO is synthesized via modified Hummer’s method from various graphite feedstock, namely natural graphite flake (NGF), natural graphite powder (NGP), and synthetic graphite powder (SGP). The Ag-GO nanocomposite was then synthesized using chemical reduction methods. Antimicrobial properties of the Ag-GO were tested using the standard …

Protective And Risk Factors Associated With Posttraumatic Growth And Psychopathological Symptoms Following Trauma, Jessica Henninger Jan 2021

Protective And Risk Factors Associated With Posttraumatic Growth And Psychopathological Symptoms Following Trauma, Jessica Henninger

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Most people experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetimes, yet only a small proportion of individuals develop posttraumatic stress disorder. Many studies have examined risk factors associated with psychopathological symptoms in individuals with trauma, but few have examined protective factors associated with posttraumatic growth, and even fewer have examined risk and protective factors concurrently. Factors that contribute to discrepancies between individuals who experience pathology and those who experience growth are unclear Recent studies suggest that mild stressful life events in childhood may impact the way in which an individual experiences later stress via a strengthening or “steeling” effect. …

A Model For Defunding: An Evidence-Based Statute For Behavioral Health Crisis Response, Taleed El-Sabawi, Jennifer J. Carroll

Faculty Publications

Too many Black persons and other persons of color are dying at the hands of law enforcement, leading many to call for the defunding of police. These deaths were directly caused by excessive use of force by police officers, but were also driven by upstream and institutional factors that include structural racism, institutional bias, and a historic culture of racialized violence. Public outcry against racial inequities has increased as the authority of police departments has expanded to include not only the authority to respond to and investigate criminal activity, but also to respond to calls regarding behavioral health issues and …

Holding On To Who They Are: Pathways For Variations In Response To Toxic Workplace Behavior Among U.S. Intelligence Officers, Greta Creech Jan 2021

Holding On To Who They Are: Pathways For Variations In Response To Toxic Workplace Behavior Among U.S. Intelligence Officers, Greta Creech

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The U.S. intelligence community is a critical mission industry responsible for protecting lives and safety in ways that impact the global security environment. Research on the deleterious impact of toxic workplace behavior on other critical mission fields, such as health care and the U.S. military, is robust. However, intelligence scholars publishing within the unclassified arena have been silent on the phenomenon, how personnel respond to it, and how it may impact the intelligence function. This lack of scholarship has afforded an opportunity to understand what constitutes toxic behavior in the intelligence environment and how it may affect U.S. national security …
