Autonomic Management Of Service Level Agreements In Cloud Computing, Stefan Edwin Karl Frey Jan 2021

Autonomic Management Of Service Level Agreements In Cloud Computing, Stefan Edwin Karl Frey

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Autonomic Management of Service Level Agreements in Cloud Computing Cloud computing has been one of the major trending topics of recent years in the Information Technology (IT) industry. In contrary to the previous IT service delivery models, where all the services and resources were hosted locally, the idea behind cloud computing is to deliver computing resources or services on-demand over a network on an easy pay-per-use business model. This paradigm change included almost all areas of the modern IT landscape, be it the storage and sharing of data for example with services like Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive or …

Emotional Body Language Synthesis For Humanoid Robots, Asimina Marmpena Jan 2021

Emotional Body Language Synthesis For Humanoid Robots, Asimina Marmpena

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

In the next decade, societies will witness a rise in service robots deployed in social environments, such as schools, homes, or shops, where they will operate as assistants, public relation agents, or companions. People are expected to willingly engage and collaborate with these robots to accomplish positive outcomes. To facilitate collaboration, robots need to comply with the behavioural and social norms used by humans in their daily interactions. One such behavioural norm is the expression of emotion through body language. Previous work on emotional body language synthesis for humanoid robots has been mainly focused on hand-coded design methods, often employing …

Dc And Impedance Sensors Based On Graphene For The Early Detection Of Alzheimer’S Protein Biomarkers, Carrie Jean Haslam Jan 2021

Dc And Impedance Sensors Based On Graphene For The Early Detection Of Alzheimer’S Protein Biomarkers, Carrie Jean Haslam

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disorder, responsible for 60-70% of all dementia incidences. Estimates suggest that there are over 47 million people affected by dementia, of which ~65% suffer from AD worldwide, costing the global healthcare system ~$1 trillion annually or over 1% of global GDP. As such, the prevention and management of AD has now become a public health priority. Here five distinctively different biosensing models are reported, explicitly developed for the ultrasensitive and label-free detection of selective biomarkers associated with AD, as well as cancer, using impedance/admittance spectroscopy. The approach based on 4-probe (using direct current …

On Trust Optimisation For Decentralised M2m Services, Besfort Shala Jan 2021

On Trust Optimisation For Decentralised M2m Services, Besfort Shala

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The service provision in traditional Machine-to-Machine Communication (M2M) ecosystems relies on commercial service providers. Their services are implemented using centralised infrastructures and focus on specific business processes. Recently, the role of end-users and their personal environments became interesting in terms of service provision. Intelligent devices located in the end-user's environment can be used to create M2M services. These services enhance the competition in the M2M marketplace and provide more service variety. The end-user integration creates a decentralised network of service providers, coming with benefits such as energy efficiency or platform independence. However, inexperienced end-users and missing authorities monitoring the service …

Partnership, Democracy, And Self-Rule In Jewish Law, Daniel J.H. Greenwood Jan 2021

Partnership, Democracy, And Self-Rule In Jewish Law, Daniel J.H. Greenwood

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Liberal political theory has long relied on a metaphor of contract: autonomous adults coming together to agree, by unanimous consent, on the basic structure of a just society. But contract is a strange metaphor with which to explain society. Contract law is based on a morality of strangers acting at arms-length. In contrast, decent societies and the governments they set for themselves must be based on a commitment of mutual responsibility. What makes us fellow citizens—fellows of any variety—is accepting that we are all in this together.

Security For Expense Statutes For Llcs And Limited Partnerships: Adding Value Or Simply Adding To The Owners’ Hopelessness?, Miriam R. Albert Jan 2021

Security For Expense Statutes For Llcs And Limited Partnerships: Adding Value Or Simply Adding To The Owners’ Hopelessness?, Miriam R. Albert

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Every state authorizes shareholder derivative litigation, and the vast majority extend this remedy to LLCs and limited partnerships. As the availability and incidence of derivative litigation has expanded over time, a number of procedural hurdles have evolved in an effort to limit nuisance or strike suits. The theory is that these strike suits are brought by small shareholders, and the need to post a bond may deter these shareholders from bringing these suits. As part of this effort, some states have enacted “security for expense” provisions, requiring owners to post a bond to cover the defendants’ expenses before they can …

A Global Pandemic Remedy To Vaccine Nationalism, Emily Michiko Morris, Orit Fischman-Afori, Miriam Marcowitz-Bitton Jan 2021

A Global Pandemic Remedy To Vaccine Nationalism, Emily Michiko Morris, Orit Fischman-Afori, Miriam Marcowitz-Bitton

Akron Law Faculty Publications

Recognizing the need for flexibility in times of emergency and building upon knowledge gained from existing international and domestic compulsory licensing laws, we propose a global, centralized scheme to provide access to vaccines during pandemics. In many ways our proposal mirrors some of the World Health Organization's (WHO) COVID-19 vaccine initiatives but consolidates and expands them into a much more efficacious form. Under the proposed model, the WHO's declaration of a pandemic would trigger a global procurement and distribution scheme for vaccines. The proposed scheme would be mandatory and would require that all countries operate as one buyer vis-a-vis vaccine …

The Global Benefits Of The Law & Economics Framework In Legal Education: Using Class Simulations To Support Law Student Learning (Second In Series), Patrick H. Gaughan Jan 2021

The Global Benefits Of The Law & Economics Framework In Legal Education: Using Class Simulations To Support Law Student Learning (Second In Series), Patrick H. Gaughan

Akron Law Faculty Publications

This is the second in a series of articles proposing that the globalization of markets necessitates the integration of the Law & Economics Framework into legal education. To this end, this article proposes using classroom simulations loosely based upon Garrett Hardin’s classic article, “The Tragedy of the Commons.” As proposed, the simple and flexible core simulation can easily be altered to address various types of issues while also serving as an engaging class introduction to the Law & Economics Framework. Importantly, law faculty can easily adapt the simulation to account for local sensibilities and be used without requiring a mastery …

Part 6: The Decline Of Local Journalism, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Local journalism is in peril. Newspapers all over the country are reducing coverage, cutting staff, abandoning physical newsrooms or shuttering operations altogether. The United States has lost fully one-fourth of its newspapers since 2004, including 70 dailies and more than 2,000 weeklies and other nondaily papers. Hampton Roads has not escaped these cutbacks. We discuss the future of local journalism in Hampton Roads.

CCPO Publications

U.S. landfalling tropical cyclone (TC) activity was projected for late 21st century conditions using a two-step dynamical downscaling framework. A regional atmospheric model, run for 27 seasons, generated tropical storm cases. Each storm case was re-simulated (up to 15 days) using the higher resolution GFDL hurricane model. Thirteen CMIP3 or CMIP5 modeled climate change projections were explored as scenarios. Robustness of projections was assessed using statistical significance tests and comparing the sign of changes derived from different models. The proportion of TCs (tropical storms and hurricanes) making U.S. landfall increases for the warming scenarios (by order 50% or more). For …

Teacher Perceptions Of Behavioral Programs Serving Emotionally Disabled Students, Joshua Weese Jan 2021

Teacher Perceptions Of Behavioral Programs Serving Emotionally Disabled Students, Joshua Weese

Doctor of Education Dissertations

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has undergone numerous revisions since 1965 when the first federal statute dealing with the education of students with disabilities was implemented. A revision completed in 1975 instituted the concept of least restrictive environment (LRE), which demands that all students with disabilities be exposed to the maximum amount possible with their regular education peers, regardless of disability. Full inclusion is the primary mode schools use to meet this requirement. Research has illustrated the positive effects of inclusion-style classrooms and LRE, both for regular and special education peers. However, contemporary research has begun to show …

What Teachers Say Versus What They Do: Examining The Relationship Of Teacher Dispositions And Teacher Behaviors As It Impacts Learning Environments, Carrie Mckeown

Doctor of Education Dissertations

When focusing on the teacher as the key variable in the classroom, professional dispositions are the greatest factor impacting student achievement (Diez & Raths, 2007; Haberman; 2004; Marzano; 2001). The intent of this study was to answer three questions: What professional dispositions impact student success in the learning environment as measured by North Carolina End-of-Grade Assessments (NCFE) data? What observed behaviors do effective practicing teachers demonstrate that stimulate student success as measured by NCFE data? To what extent do observed behaviors correlate between teacher self-professed dispositions and observations of an administrator? A key element was whether dispositions teachers indicated they …
